Van, as always great advice especially about sharpening tools. I haven't found anyone at a carving club that isn't willing to show members how to use each knife or gouge and how to sharpen the tools and keep them sharp.
I have a few chisels made with my own hands from files, or from wood drills . In one of my videos I show how to make a chisel from a wood drill. Very easy to make. I have been carving with them for years and I am satisfied.
I've been carving wood for a couple years now, I'm lucky that I have two locals who carve and we have a meet up once a week, we don't carve but we bring what we're working on, its funny how we each prefer different tool to basically accomplish the same things. I have acquired quite a few chisels/gouges, I seem to use the same couple tools but recently started using the v-tool a lot more, need to pick up some more sizes so thanks for the video.
5 years Blacksmith Hobbiest and plan many gouges chisels and carving knifes. I did 4 handles loaded with Badger State Blades, which is definitely the best I've experienced, and my handle fits my medium/large hands, and I'm older. I need the fit. "Good to my hand,"as you said . I'm one also noticing myself holding my breath but a very interesting hobby.
Thank you Van for sharing. Tools are always in question. What to buy and where to buy them. I have been noticing that a lot of carving tools are not in stock. Thank you again Van.
I like the calm way the instructions are delivered 😊

What kind of wood do you recommend? For a beginner?
Basswood is great! Soft and easy to work with! It's still my favorite wood to carve!
