This is very helpful. I am new to using a bandsaw & your instruction on how to cut out a pattern is an excellent demonstration of how to increase one’s knowledge to advance as a carver. Thanks.
Hi Blake, Before I ask my question I want to congratulate you on you teaching techniques. The first video I saw about ten months ago was very hard to follow given your camera angle. All the rest have been some of the best I have ever seen. Clear camera angles, the preview of the tools, your explanations and I guess I should also mention your amazing talent. My question is somewhat related to this video. When you carve on a triangle, like your Santa Carving, I know that grain runs up and down. Does it matter which way the grain is curved? Should I cut on the diagonal that has the grain curving away from the corner I want to carve or the other way. Thanks, Rod
I have hot glued but the tape keeps you from heating up The glue gun and then carving off the hard glue when finished. I think I like the tape method better, but both works!
Nice video! I've always used blue painter's tape or masking tape. Clear, what a concept! Where did you get the Ryan Olson pattern? I've seen quite a few people mention it lately.

I think there is strength in having the grain run away from the corner. Thanks so much for the kind comments on the video!
Also meant to ask but forgot on my first comment. What size of bandsaw blade are you using?
I usually use a 3/16" 4 tooth skip tooth blade. That allows you to cut in the fine detail without a lot of issues.
Great instruction! You ever hot glue the pieces back on?
I have hot glued but the tape keeps you from heating up
The glue gun and then carving off the hard glue when finished. I think I like the tape method better, but both works!
Now I see why people BUY the blanks! 😂
What width blade do you have on your bandsaw? You can turn corners easily, I think I need to reduce mine.
I believe it is a 3/16" skip tooth blade. Definitely good to turn corners.

Check out the video on Helvie’s Facebook page. You will find his video there and a chance to get the pattern.
What size, model bandsaw do you use?
I use a 14" 28-400 Delta I purchased from Lowes. I highly recommend it for doing your cutouts.
Great videos Blake! What size of blade do you use in your bandsaw for cut outs?
3/16" 4tpi skip tooth
