Your neglecting to address a lot of factors, opting instead to repeat yourself Value, country you are in, experience levels, what you are looking to achieve are all factors that need to be considered I started carving with beaver craft, it’s actually fine but cheap There’s a mid ground you are ignoring

What kind of wood do you recommend? For a beginner?

V, I enjoy relief carving. I use various hardwoods as my canvases. There are a few non oily domestic and an exotic species are “paintable” and offer incredible grains, I’m working with Mesquite quite a bit, because the grain is so incredible. Heck, a nice slab of mesquite sanded to 220 grit, then coated with shellac is a work of art before I carve anything. After carving, I mostly use acrylic paint pens and ink to color carved objects and enhance background grain. I do use acrylic paints with brushes as well, but not as much. After allowing paint / ink to dry… I typically apply another coating of shellac, then apply a paste wax, lightly buffing. Looks good but I worry about “lack of protection”. Most of my pieces are in the 12” x 24” x 1” size range. The carved and background sections need sealing / protection, and the paint needs protection as well. I have applied polyurethane, poly acrylic, and lacquer over stained and painted surfaces. I am not good at it. Dust nibs and contaminates are always lurking about, and why I don’t do much mixed media (resin / wood art) anymore. I don’t use any “OIL” products for my Art. Water based paints and alcohol based products (shellac) are my primary “go to” material. I am seeking advice for a clear top coat that will protect the piece from paint rubbing off, etc… if possible. The word “varnish” is very broad and opinions abound. Best
