@G Ren Finally I find someone who agrees Black Panther is a good movie, everyone thinks it's overrated and while yeah it kinda is, it's not a bad Marvel movie, it's actually pretty great.

    • @tonyc9988
      @tonyc9988 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

G Ren The same “professional critics” who made Boss Baby the best animated feature, I presume.
Killmonger is not a great villain because his motivations make no sense and even contradicts with one another.
      - At first it would seem that he is angry because of his father’s death, but no, when he meets his farther, he’s like “everybody dies, eventually”, which means this is not about his father but something greater.
      - We later finds out that it is about killing the white in power, liberating the black people, and since the movie doesn’t show how the black are being oppressed, meaning that this will be based on the viewer’s knowledge of the world, but the white in power nowadays are actually doing their best to give black people the rights they deserve.
      - Killmonger also stabs Zuri the moment he finds out that’s uncle James, so it is not about liberating people, it’s just that he hates those who oppose his farther’s point of view, but when T’challa reveals himself to be alive and the Dora turned on him, he was like “what’s up!”, all smiling and stuff, turns out he simply enjoys bullying random people, black or white if they do not obey him, in fact, he’s been like this since the beginning.
      - So he’s not angry and he does not act like someone who is fighting for a noble cause, that means he’s a cocky bastard who wants to rule the world, and how can you call that a great villain?
Do correct me if I’m wrong, personal opinions matter, just because someone’s not a professional doesn’t mean they’re not allowed to give their thoughts, you were basically saying that normal people have no rights to complain about the products they bought.

Villains are the most interesting when they stick around and become more layered and in depth over time. Mcu has a bad habit of killing them off after one film.

    • @iloveutubesince3207
      @iloveutubesince3207 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

Not necessarily. Plenty of villains do overstay their welcome and their motives become repetitive and lame. Stryker and Magneto from the X-Men movie saga are the most obvious examples. There is also the case where a popular villain becomes so ubiquitous that other villains are set aside to give the spotlight to said villain. Joker from DC Comics tends to be used in that way.

The characters needed similar motives but opposing methods of achieving their goals, T'challa wanted to see Wakanda help others by giving aid, and Killmonger wanted to help others by killing their oppressers.
T'challa should have had some kind of temptation to overcome, a temptation that was on a personal level not just wanting to right the wrongs(while I think that is still good) of his people
Meanwhile Killmonger would be raw and indulgent in all of his desires, wanting to and craving the destruction of those around him while at the same time seeming cool, and exploding at certain points as he let his desires consume his character

The villain was another “same powers as the hero” trope in the mcu, and black panther himself was very very meh unlike his appearance in Civil War which was phenomenal

The contrasting hero-villain dichotomy that gets this tension right was Bruce Wayne and Ra's al Ghul from Batman Begins. They were virtually friends, and some of the film's most satisfying scenes came from their conversations. Both of their motivations made complete sense, allowing ample opportunity for compare/contrast, and Neeson's understated performance was immaculate. He spoke quietly when he wanted to, and f'ed you up when he didn't. That seems like what this movie was going for and failed at.

And in the face of this, the conflict of the film is dialogue between a representation of the diaspora, and a representation of the mother country, not with white people. Besides which, if they actually did rehash and showed say police brutality, or jim crowe or something else, wouldn't you argue wokeness too? So what are you saying, that, in the marvel universe which-unlike the DC universe-is supposed to reflect the real world, that actual historical events shouldn't even be mentioned because they make you uncomfortable? Again the dialogue was between Black people and Africans. Whatever assertion of wokeness is coming from your own conscience.

I didn't connect with him at all. Sure he was upset about his father's death and he did make good points about African Americans, but he didn't really care about his people or his rich culture. He killed his girlfriend like nothing. He only wanted to use Wakandan weapons to take control of the world, spread his hatred and bitterness. That gets revealed before his demise. So many people were woke, but forgot that he was a mass murderer that likely took away the same things that he lost all around the world, but black lives matter more.

Multiple times, Killmonger talked about killing the “oppressors”. That only means one thing in present society. This was about white people.
It’d have been nice to see why he hates white people. We’re only shown why he hates Wakanda, and even then, he doesn’t hate them for killing his dad. He only hates them for not helping “oppressed” people, which is never shown. Like I said, you need your own wokeness to fill in the gaps.

The point of the movie and everything in it went completely over your head.
    1. MBJ didnt underact, he was suppose to act emotionless. Because Killmonger is suppose to be a ruthless character devoid of any emotion except anger. That's the reason why it comes across like he is. This was suppose to be expanded upon by showing you how many people he was willing to kill just to get to Wakanda, including his own "girlfriend."
    2. Killmonger DID play a bigger role into the MCU. His message and motivation made T'Challa realize that the past that his father created was a corrupt one and it plays a big role into the development of T'Challas character. Which leads to T'Challa trying to right a wrong by opening up his countries resources to the rest of the world. And aids the Avengers multiple times during the fight with Thanos and his army.
    3. His motivation was driven by anger. He's suppose to act irrational out of rage. Him doing the exact opposite of what you're saying is rational is the entire point. Killmonger believes he should he should have been the King of Wakanda, or atleast apart of it. And also believes he suffered because he wasnt apart of it. So therefore wants to get back at the world by making them suffer the same way he did.
These concepts arent that hard to understand. You basically have to look at the irrational view rationally, because if you try to make sense of it based on an unbiased opinion, you lose sight of why someone would look at something biasedly. It seems as tho you've looked at this movie too critically and missed all the points that the movie was even trying to make.

Whilst I respect your opinion, I disagree with this some points made on this video. I’ll respond to each points why.
The acting - I personally the acting is a subjective choice of whether you like it or not. Some people enjoy that style of acting whereas some don’t which is fine.
Relationship - This point I do somewhat agree with you because I do believe Killmonger should’ve lived. However it remains to be seen what happens in the sequels. But one thing I feel you ignore is T’Challa’s arc in the movie. He begins the movie being thrusted the role of King which he does not feel he’s ready for. And he’s someone who views his father as the perfect king and he believes he can never reach the levels of his father. However Killmonger is a representation of the flaws of T’Challa’s father. Killmonger is proof to T’Challa that perhaps his father is not this perfect king and the fact that Killmonger is essentially created by T’Challa’s father is what changes T’Challa. The movie is essentially T’Challa challenging Wakanda’s past because Wakanda’s past caused Killmonger to be the way he is. And it allowed T’Challa to see that his father was only human and made mistakes, so T’Challa will learn from them.
Motivations - I feel you miss out that Killmonger experienced the death of his father at a very young age. It’s mentioned in the movie I believe that he’s had this anger within him ever since his father died. And you have to imagine, someone at a very young age who sees his father death won’t be able to comprehend what just happened. It’s not like at that moment he was thinking “oh this is Wakanda’s fault”. He would be blaming the world and the universe for taking his father away from him. And because he’s been instilled with this anger since such a young age, his mindset has not changed so in a way, he is still that same young boy. And in terms of what he wants to do with Wakanda, once again it’s mentioned in the movie that Killmonger is part of the military, so he’s got that mindset of conquering. And you can imagine someone at a very young age is angry and is growing up at a time where racial tensions is high. I understand that perhaps that you would want to see Killmongers childhood but from what we know about the racial tensions in America, it’s sometimes better to make the assumption I feel. And you forget, this motivation was the exact same motivation his father had. So he wants to carry that out as well.

How much more visceral would the waterfall fight have been on a real cliff/waterfall? Imagine how beautiful killmonger's death would've been with a real African sunset.
Filmakers have managed for years, with either practical effects or a combination of practical and CGI. The only reason it was 100% CGI was maximising profit and a lack of passion from the higher ups. Period.

I mean... do you remember the scene with N'Jobu (Killmonger's dad) talking about helping black people all over the world with Wakanda technology...? Doesn't it seem like that would be Killmonger's motivation as well after he found out the truth about his father's death (We can assume he finds out because of his extensive knowledge of Wakanda in the museum scene) ? Killmonger probably would've liked to kill his father's murderer too but took pleasure in taking revenge against the son (T'Challa). He wouldn't get revenge on Wakanda itself, Killmonger would use Wakanda and it's resources to fullfil his father's dream of helping oppressed black people.

      @Gorogregoro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@tsbredlight9481 I suppose that's what would have happened eventually if Killmonger succeeded. Just like how if Hydra took over it would eventually be like Nazi's trying to put White Aryan people on top.
However, because these movies are made for a very large public audience, none of these comic book movies ever will ever go beyond making only subtle references to real world hate groups/organizations. That's why Killmonger mostly focuses on the issues of Black inequality and using Wakanda's resources to help black people. That's why Hydra doesn't outright say "we need to keep white people on top" and instead focuses on taking over society from the shadows and gain control of the entire planet.
I personally like how movies and art will try to take influences from history and real world problems and create something completely different that makes me care or re-evaulate how I feel/think about different topics. What kind of black villain would help you empathize with his motivations but disagree with his methods? How do you make an entertaining action movie that also helps you empathize with Black people and the unique problems they face in society? While I think you made some good points I disagree with the motivation segment of your video
Killmonger is a black kid who grew up in America with a now single mother, despite rather you believe it or not a lot of underprivileged black children are jealous and reasonably (sometimes) place the blame on things like cultural white supremacy. While we don’t see the upbringing of killmonger we are left to assume he knows the effects of this. (This is one of your good points we should’ve got more about his upbringing). Couple this with the fact that his father was trying to do what killmonger attempts to do later in the movie (probably without all the murder). Or did we forget that his father was the one who helped Klaue steal from Wakanda. While his father was making his case to the king he talked about how the black community had to turn to drugs, was unemployed, etc. Killmonger probably carried these ideas with him even if he was actually privileged.
Continuing past that your part about destroying Wakanda is also valid. Keep in mind though that even though his father betrayed them he never hated them. He still spoke nicely of them even when killmonger visited him in the dream state. It’s clear though that killmonger was not interested in the people of Wakanda long term. He got rid of herb thus stopping the continuation of tradition after his reign, and literally choked one of the girls when they didn’t want to.
Lastly, destroying Wakanda goes against his father’s dream. Once he “killed” tchalla and Zuri his personal mission was complete. Otherwise Shuri and the queen would probably also be dead. Imagine if Trump went and killed a dictator in another country. If someone later cane to America and killed some people who weren’t involved in the decision and ruined the economy, wouldn’t you consider that unreasonable? Especially if some of those people were the same age or younger when the killing occurred?
Minor point I think the acting is ok, consider the fact that this man killed his girlfriend for becoming a hostage (without hesitation) and idk how much calmer and arrogant you could be.
In all I do agree that the movie does seemed rushed though. As you said all the characters should’ve built more of a relationship. We should’ve seen more of both of them as acting kings, etc

This is going to come across as rude but I honestly don't mean it in that way. I think you should go out and talk to more black people about the idea behind Killmonger. All of his motivations are pretty accurate and spot on when it comes to how young black Americans feel about the world sometimes (e.g. burn it all and start over). The acting was perfect in that, in the world, as a black man you have to act calm and collective despite the rage you may have on the inside of hundreds of years of discrimination that led to the disenfranchisement of your people.
I respect some of the things you said but overall you're dislike of the character is more of an issue of you not understanding the scope of black culture. Again I know that sounds like a backhand slap but it's honestly not.

My only problem with killmonger, which stopped him from being a great villain, on par with Thanos, was his actions.
His motivation, starting a war, by giving one side access to incredible technology, indiscriminately, would lead to the wholesale death of innocent people, probably from both sides. It makes sense to him, because of the oppression governments have placed upon his people, the world over. Much like Thanos though, he cannot see the insanity of it. Once he wins the war, what then would he do to the people he vocalizes as "oppressors?" Who would he call oppressors? The innocentd, who might be ignorant, but never outright hurt or subjugated anyone, would then be crushed beneath the boot heel he whole cloth resents their ancestors for. If it had been just this, that was his whole driving force, he'd be a villain on the level of Thanos. You can sympathize, because of the history of oppression surrounding black people around the world. He just, views the solution through a narrow lens, that won't let him hear of any other way.
What ruins this, all of it. Is his need for personal power. He becomes the black panther, then burns the flowers, because... Plot. In universe, it's so HE is the last one, with all the power. Why? That flies in the face of his motivations! He wants those he perceives as his people, to finally be free... Yet chooses to gatekeep a power that if not the world, but his people, could benefit from?!
It takes someone who could have been an IW Thanos level villain, and makes it look like he's a shallow bad guy, utilizing his charismatic cause to grandstand personal power.
    Really killed it for me.

Kilmonger wants to liberate black people, but he also hates Wakanda, their traditions, and what they stand for.

In all honesty his motivations are a mess, so lets break this down, his father left wakanda and had a baby with an outside woman, and was doing his homeland dirty by selling vibranium, as well as aiding golem, so he grows up with a hate of wakanda, so his goal should be against wakanda, however he decides to go and become its king, which really shouldn't have happened since he missed out on challenge day so tough luck, ANYWAYS once he becomes king he decides they are gonna ship weapons out to people all over the globe so they can take over. They set him up to be the bad guy, as he should be, in the comics he aint a good person just trying to liberate people, back to the movie, he was set up to be a bad guy, the rival to wakanda and the yen to yang, but they decided to push the moral/preach the idealism and made a 90 degree turn from bad guy to just a dude trying to change the world, and in the end he spouted his line, and died. killing off black panther's numero uno baddie, like he was the top dog besides golem, but he died from killmonger, killing two enemies with one crap covered stone.
TLDR Killmonger has motives but doesnt follow through on those motives, he does other things while still using his real motives as an excuse for an unrelated moralistic goal, plus he killed Klaue so.....

@@SteampunkCreeper alot of the film clearly went straight over your head, and this "breakdown" makes absolutely no sense. Killmonger was left in America, where he experienced oppression. He felt that wakanda left black people behind while living in royalty but still leaving blacks in America to struggle. It was due to these experiences in America that lead killmonger to become radicalized. The whole reason killmonger wanted to become king in the first place, was so he could do what he thought wakanda wasn't doing, and help the blacks he felt that were struggling in America. He was just so radicalized, that while his intentions may have come from a good place, the actions he set forth to get there weren't good. There was no "90 degree turn" on his character at all, he's consistent the entire film. Killmongers main objective the entire film was to become king and liberate blacks. I think the main reason alot of people don't like black panther, is becuase they don't grasp the many deeper messages and ideas in the film. He has no parents, discovers his father murder in his own home, you know from extrapolation that he's lived a life alone in a country that discriminates him for the color and physiology he was born with, most likely he picks his extremism and criminal ways from his parents and the practical circumstances of his upbringing as an orphan, a black person in Oakland.
The flaw of his extremism, the fact that he wants to seek retribution against the world, that he still perpetuates violence and discrimination against the community that oppressed him and the fact that he is still willing to extend his vendetta to innocents and people who will disagree with him IS what makes him a great villain.
A great villain, a broken child, a sad angry adult lost and alone.
He's arrogant and proud because he compensates for how vulnerable he was and has been for so long. Because he won't stand to be oppressed ever again.
That's why he kills himself in the end even when T Challa offers him a chance to heal. He dies still in the optic that he will be made to suffer after he's healed.
how does that not elicit empathy
"A brutal genocidal person that is basically hitler but black" I read someone comment
reducing him just to that means that the person saying it admits to not understanding the character.
But you did understand why Kilmonger is a great villain, Reccher. Yes multifaceted, more than one dimension.

But I think that Ultron was gifted with a sense of morality and compassion, that's why he resents being alone.
So upon learning of the atrocities of humanity and how long humanity lasted for, he came to the logical conclusion rhat humanity was a danger to itself. But being an advanced AI, like Cortana's rampancy in mass effect, or Deviancy in Detroit become human, he felt emotions, he felt emotionally invested in his goal to become humanity's savior by destroying it, mirroring Tony stark the merchant of death, contributing to extending the protector instinct of the US by selling and delivering weapons of mass destruction...
"Or the next missile I deliver to you, will come very much faster"
The motives of ultron aren't vain or thin, it just requires too much extrapolation and his character is too subtle.
