The fact that you didn’t know Janet existed is a prime example of why the Super Bowl 2004 was such a travesty. She was literally as big as Madonna up to that point.

Janet was bigger than Madonna. Madonna I'm sad to say used nasty trucks and over sexualized everything and was controversial to gain notoriety. Now I'm not saying Madonna isn't talented because she is but she was controversial for fame

Janet can definitely sing - and stellar harmonies/background vocals. Her ballads will likely showcase her vocals best. Let's Wait Awhile, Come Back To Me, Again, & I Get Lonely are good places to start. Highly recommend Pleasure Principle, Rhythm Nation, That's The Way Love Goes, Together Again. Janet's back catalog is incredibly impressive to be honest. Enjoy!

@@MCharlerySmithif it was for just singles Michael
Would’ve been much higher because he has 13 #1’s to Janet’s #10. The reason why Janet was higher than Michael because she had more CONSISTENT on the charts than Michael and she has achieved more feats as far as numbers.
Janet Jackson is the only artist who has 18 consistent top 10 hits in history. Janet Jackson is the only artist in history to have 5 or more top 10 singles from 3 conservative albums.
Y’all need to get y’all facts straight before always pedestaling Michael Jackson over other artists as if other artists had not accomplished things that Michael never did. It’s annoying AF. I don’t care how much more records Michael has sold more than Janet, she has her own accomplishments that’s unmatched that Michael never did. Give my girl her 10’s. That’s why she scores higher than him on the billboard hot 100.

This is probably one of the best showcases of Janet's voice but you'd have to understand range, tone, harmonies, belting, mixed registers and rhythmic timing. This song shows Janet doing it all. Granted, she's not Whitney or her brother but I'm surprised you didn't mention any of this vocal elements.

You're correct, there was no auto-tune then. Not as we know it now.
Her collaboration with Paula Abdul made for some of her best footwork. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis production was spot on, helping Janet lead the Dance, Pop and R&B charts.
Speaking of auto-tune & Paula Abdul. The way they used to "auto-tune" was a lot harder to do. The "Forever your Girl" - Paula Abdul album was recorded in three parts. The first step was recording all the instrumentation only. The next part was bringing in Paula in to lay the vocal tracks. The final part was to re-record the instrumentation - rearranged to flow with all the missed notes and off keys. That woman was protected from high on up, this is certain

I find it odd when one says "I didn't know about Janet Jackson!" You do realize she is one of the best selling artist of all time. When you bring up Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston & Madonna and what they have done in music her name is always brought up and thrown into the mix. She was one of only two women to dominate the 90's on billboard (other being Mariah Carey). For all those that don't believe that fact Google is your friend. Best selling females on the 90's Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. Also this album (Rhythm Nation 1814) is the only album in history male or female to produce seven top five singles & four went to number one. This album and song made Janet Jackson the first and only female artist to have a number one in three consecutive decades (89/90/91) off one album. The tour was the only tour in history is debut at number one. Now if you said I don't know much about her music because it's not my style nor taste in music I can understand that, but I didn't know about her is a bit too the extreme. This woman is cemented in the music history as a pioneer and blue print to every female artist out today. She sits as one of only three artist to have a number one single in four consecutive decades (JANET JACKSON, Barbara S. & Bruce S.) 80/90/00/10. If she drops her album she'll hit her eighth number one album and has the chance of being the only solo artist to have a number one song/single in five consecutive decades 80/90/00/10/20.

This album is considered a classic. From the euro pop/dance of Miss u much, to the Militant sound of Rhythm Nation and ending into the total Rock of "black Cat" . Suggestion to listen to her Black Cat - its great. Even maybe do a compare/contrast to that and MJ's "Dirty Diana" . Maye do a comparison to the "dance trinity" Madonna, Janet and Paula Abdul. Paula was HUGE at one point.

janet jackson - let's wait a while is a great ballad by her; the video features Taimak from the movie the last dragon and came out in 1986/87 (from her Control album); Also "Again" from 1993 album and the video is beautiful

This was the beginning of Janet becoming a superstar in the 90’s. This entire album was a gold standard- and I personally think Janet was on par with Madonna in this decade. I absolutely love “Escapade” and “Love Will Never Do”. If you move further on her “Janet” album- her song “If” is an all time favorite.

Janet Jackson has 10 number 1 singles, 27 top 10 hits, 7 number 1 albums and has sold over 200 million albums worldwide. Janet is thee blueprint and I’m sick and tired of videos like this and having to inform people about Janet Jackson. She isn’t just michaels sister yalll, SHE IS A LEGEND. Put some respect on her name

Wait WHAT? You haden't heard of Janet? OMG. Mind Blown. My favorite Jackson BY FAR!!!! Been to so many concerts! They did not have autotune then, lol. She is an amazing dancer and singer, but her voice is very breathy because when she puts power into it she literally sounds like Michael and it was her way of not being completely compared to it. She is an ICON. BTW that was not the end of the video. "If" is a fantastic song, "That's the Way Love Goes" "Rhythm Nation" "Together Again" "Don't Stop" way too many to list from this Icon.

Sir how old are you. If you know of Michael then you should definitely know of Janet. Janet is a Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer just like Michael and she is one of the biggest music stars Of ALL TIME. She is actually ranked higher than Michael on Billboards 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time. He is #8 and Janet is ranked #7. You can't know music if you don't know Janet. Not taking a dig at you just speaking facts!

Great reaction! My God, I feel old now 😂… Hearing you say that you didn’t know about Janet Jackson kinda shocked me… I guess that’s the results of the 2004 Super Bowl mess. JJ got seriously blackballed after that… I’m a huge fan; she’s been a big part of my musical journey. I remember watching her videos over and over when I was a kid (I grew up in the 80’s)… Janet Jackson is a legend, a Pop/R&B icon; highly influential. Without her, there wouldn’t have been any Britney, any Ciara or even Beyoncé… She deserves way more praises. It’s very cool that you’re discovering her music. I’m sure you’ll like it. Cheers 😊

For vocals try I Get Lonely by Janet or Anytime Anyplace by her. For more of a rock feel try Black Cat by Janet. She has sooo many hits you can take your pick. I Get Lonely is one of my all time favs by Janet Miss Jackson if you Nasty! Also for pure dance try my all time favorite dance video by a female artist which is "Pleasure Principle" by Janet. When I say she is dancing her ass off I mean every bit of it. Try Scream with her and Michael where she is neck and neck with her big brother. Don't sell yourself short and get into Janet.

She definitely can SING. It's just that THIS track doesn't really challenge her vocally much at all. It's not the type of song to showcase vocal abilities.

Janet has a HUGE catalog. If you want something to showcase her vocals (and dancing) “Pleasure Principle”, “Rhythm Nation” “ When I Think of You”, “All For You”, etc.
“Miss You Much” isn’t the best representation.

    Janet and Justin Timberlake
Superbowl Halftime drama that made history 2004....still talked about. There's no way he can say he didn't know about that halftime existed or didn't hear about it. I know his friends and family members spoke about that halftime show...who didn't. The news, newspapers, media, tabloids, magazines and the biggest gossip.

Janet is always my favorites, not her personality, is all about her creative and hard working focus on her songs. Rhythm Nation definitely her top picks, 7 songs in 1 album on Top 5 for Billboard 100 chart, 3 are Number 1. The last song is the best after a year released, this song until now I can play over and over in 1 day still : "Love Will Never Do Without You".
