    As far as I know, Michael started the short film style music videos with Thriller. Janet did take it to another level with Rhythm Nation though, it’s twice as long as Thriller and incorporates more than one song of course. Michael and Janet, to me, have the absolute best and most innovative music videos.

      It wasn't with thriller

      Michael didn't make music videos. He always made short films. I don't believe he liked the term "music video".

      @@nevermindkey Beat It and Billie Jean may have been more short film format than music video.

    • @nevermindkey
      @nevermindkey 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Own Your Crazy I was just going by how long they were. Yes, every video he made was cinematic, but not all of them had this longer storytelling element like Thriller. And I know he didn’t like the term “music video”, but that was the term I saw fit to use. But anyway, there were so many cinematic storytelling videos in the 80s. What immediately comes to mind are Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time, Madonna’s Papa Don’t Preach, and a-ha’s Take On Me. For me, Billie Jean and Beat It fall into the same category as these videos and countless others whereas Thriller had more to it, it was meatier.

    This movie is the reason I decided to be a dancer and choreographer when I grew up. And now I have a Ph.D in choreography, and it’s very specifically because of Janet Jackson.

    Janet Jackson is a personification of what it takes to have your own identity. In the video for Control. Janet confirmed her presence. And now she is THE GREATEST FEMALE ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME! TO BE CONTINUED.….

    Come Back to me is absolutely Hauntingly Beautiful. The lyrics have so much depth and the video captured the song to perfection IMO.

    It's great to see so many of you embrace Janet's work. I'm glad that you watched the full RN video so you have the full context of the project. When you see the individual videos, it can be confusing to understand some of the details in the clips especially for Miss You Much. Keep in mind at the time of this release to watch videos it was either MTV or Friday Night Videos to have access to your favorite vids or songs, so we were all sitting by the TV ready to watch this short film. (Yes I'm dating myself)
    At that time, Janet and Michael were always great at creating hype by producing teasers. So even at the real ease of Miss You Much, she gave us the bulk of the video, but we didn't get to see the chair routine until the film was released.
    I hope you continue to enjoy Janet's work. As you work through it what you will find is that she has created a musical diary of her life from control to all 4 u. Have fun with it.

    Actually the long form music video was pioneered by her brother Michael. “Thriller” was the video that set the standard for every video that came after it. Whereas Michael pioneered the art form Janet, in my opinion, perfected it. He would even borrow a great deal from Janet and vice versa.

    So glad you watched the RN movie dude!! You have to react to the Alright video version featuring Heavy D. To me thats the really hype one my guy 😊 Escapade is such a fun video and I know your going to get up and Dance to Black Cat!! R

    • @piper998877
      @piper998877 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. The Heavy D version adds a scene that explains that Cab Colloway is playing at the theatre where Janet imagines herself. Plus, if you get the Heavy D version, you know that you aren't watching one of the shortened versions of Alright.

    The longest music video is by Michael Jackson called ‘Ghosts’ from 1997, it’s about 45 mins long, and also incorporates a number of songs.
    Are you going to do a Michael Jackson discography and video reaction? His videos are amazing. He invented the short film with ‘Thriller’ (14 mins) and then ‘bad’ which was 18 minutes long.

    I had the short film on VHS in 1989. I probably haven't seen it since the 90s. Still powerful. This album was the first album with a message i ever bought. It inspired my generation. It is still in my personal Top 10 favorite albums of all time.

    You have no idea how revolutionary the choreography was in this Janet era. It is hard to see now that it has been duplicated and imitated so much since but this really was culture changing choreography

    Ok you always ask for us to describe the era back then and what we were doing... Janet started a fashion craze and everybody began to wear all black militaristic clothing ...all young ppl up to 40... i personally brought the black boots with the silver frame that her dancers wore.....everybody had the had and the young girls were fully dressed showing no skin dressed in black and white... i remember black ppl and white ppl really coming together in unity but as janet alluded to on her unbreakable cd the moment didn't hold because ultimately it was a dance record and like most things it went outof style when the next big thing came out.... but dude it was a fun time when gay str8 black white Asian came together and danced our asses off and she was our leader

    The short video is a little pretentious and saps a lot of the energy out of the the song, Rhythm Nation. The shorter music video is much better - it dominated MTV when it was released. The choreography was so sharp. I think you should consider closing out the Rhythm Nation videos with one last go - just put the fantastic "Love Will Never Do Without You" on the next clip 🤞
    It's ridiculous that on many "best of" lists, whether it be for pop albums or music videos, artists such as Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake have supplanted Janet Jackson. She clearly inspired them - look at their videos and see for yourself. For whatever reason, the music industry has been successful in burying her accomplishments after the whole Super Bowl incident. Janet Jackson ruled the 1990's and had 17 or 18 songs reach the top 5 of Billboard top hits IN A ROW. Only The Beatles and Elvis had longer streaks. THE BEATLES and ELVIS. That's incredible company!
