    My wife had used the SX-40 HS for years taking bird/wild life photos and some landscapes. When it came time for an upgrade I thought it would be a good idea to get her a full frame camera and purchased a Sony A7 ii with a kit lens. Due to her arthritis the Sony was just to heavy. So when the SX-70 HS came out we thought we would give it a go.
    She loves it. Zoom is priceless when you can't get near herons, egrets or spoonbills.

    Thanks for this honest and realistic video. I bought this camera as a substitute to my heavy DSLR 400 mm when traveling or when being too lazy to bring my best gears with me. What a mistake I’ve made buying this childish toy! Yes this SX7O is light weight, design and ergonomics are very good, settings are similar to an expensive DSLR etc. BUT this camera doesn’t take good photos. There is noise even at 100 ISO, texture is grainy if there is not bright sunny sky of if you crop in a little in your PC. Colors can be good in some rare situations but sharpness doesn’t exist at more than mid zoom. Full zoom is just awful. I didn’t try video yet but photo quality is under average level. My old Powershot G7X is ten times better in quality.

      Ahh sorry you didn’t see this beforehand. I had so much higher hopes for it too due to experience with the SX50HS many years back. Can’t tell if this line of cameras has gotten worse or other cameras have just gotten so much better but Canon really needs to step it up if they ever release a SX80HS.

    Thanks for the review. I'm not a big fan of cameras that need ideal conditions to produce quality images. I'm glad I checked out this review. Before the review, I was seriously considering getting this.

  • @jackcomer1463
    @jackcomer1463 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great Review, But.......The quality of the image does not always depend on the camera. It depends on the ability of the photographer. I've seen incredible photos taken with a browning instamatic.
    You can have a Nikon 810, but if you don't have the ability you won't take good pictures. This camera can take great pictures in all kinds of light.

    • @DigitalTechReviewsTips
      @DigitalTechReviewsTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I totally agree that in the hands of a capable videographer/photographer any camera can produce good images (the SX70HS included). However the inverse IS also true that a capable camera in the hands of any person can produce better images (better maybe not in an artistic sense but definitely technical).
      As for your last statement “this camera can take great pictures in all kinds of light” - yes that is true, though (as I tried to articulate in my review) I think that there are other cameras that can take a lot better pictures in “all kinds of light” for less money that also offer better features.

    • @pianistanimeher394
      @pianistanimeher394 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it can but not really your opinion isn't good. You say it depend on photography yes it does but if your saying that way., Would you still use cheap 200 dollar budget camera and say the best camera.

    Hey nice video! Im interested in this camera as a starting fotographer.
    Im going on a holiday to africa and because of the superzoom this one interests me. First i was looking at a more compact one, the sx740 hs, its very compact what is a + for me, but i think the quality and zoom will be to low.
    A normal reflex camera with the lens switching and all the stuff you carry with it, is something im not looking for.
    Do you have other suggestions or would you go for this one. Sadly Canon havent released any other compact cameras the last 5 years.

    TYSM for this review, i use it in my workplace and they're always trying to blame the poor quality on me and my team, when they're the ones giving us this camera, and no extra lighting aside from the ones everyone has in an everyday office. For a while we did think it was just us, thinking we didnt know how to work this camera when we have personally, the canon rebel t5 and it works just fine, but I'm glad to know that everyone who uses this camera with regular lighting experiences this anyways. Don't get it if u plan to use a greenscreen or if you can't afford lamps or other sources of light.

    Very honnest and genuine review, i bought my sx 70 on new years day thinking that it would give a better pictures then my old sx50 but i was wrong, i should've seen the reviews before before buying this poor image sx70 . My old sx50 has the best image by far in comparison to 60 and 70 , only difference in sx70 is the it has a bit wider image and thst is all , I wouldn't recommend anyone to by this sx70 really. I paid 799$ Aus dollars which is a waste really,
    Thanks for the review mate ,

      @okaro6595 ปีที่แล้ว

      To get significant improvement in image quality you will go to larger sensor sizes. The SX-series has a small 7.7 mm sensor. You would have to go to one inch (15.8 mm) sensors like on the Canon G-series or mirroless cameras/DSLRs which have 27-43 mm sensors. This would mean significant reduction of the zoom range or huge increase in price and weight. The king of the superzooms is Sony RX-10 Mark IV. It costs over 2000 dollars and has a 25x zoom (24-600 mm equivalent).

  • @waynewright2886

    I Found out that the SX-70 Quietly Came Out a While Back, & the Bridge & Pockets get Very Little Attention thanks to to Flood of Camera Phones or the More Advanced D.S.L.R.'s!
    Anyway... I saw the SX-70 Last Monday (8-26) at a Best Buy Store in Burbank, Calif (Outside of L.A.), & I Tried to Examine it & Work the Features, but the Battery was Dead!
    Last Friday (8-30) I went to Another Best Buy in West Hollywood, Calif & Saw the SX-70 there & it's Battery Worked & Thumbed through the Features, & Seeing what they had Added, that you didn't Mention in the Clip.
    The Lack of a Hot Shoe, Turned me Away with the SX-70, cause I do a Lot of Flash Photos at Events, as I do with my Current SX-50 that I Bought in February 2014, when I Bought that Camera at Samy's Camera here at its Culver City, Calif Store Over 5 Years Ago I also Bought a Sunpack DigiFlash 3000 that was Recommended as a Backup Flash & I Had a Sunpack Flash from the 80's that I Used on my 2 Pentax Film Cameras Back Then, but my DigiFlash 3000 Started Acting Up on the SX-50 in which it Fires Low Flashes Half of the Time, & Photos Are Dark & I don't know why it Does that, Both Flash & Camera are Well Taken Care of, & I Bought Another Flash from Wal-Mart, an ONN Flash, that I can Use for also for a Slave Light, but it has a Drawback the Flash Sync Speed Drops to 1/20 or Lower if I Attach the Flash on My SX-50, so I Use it for a Slave Light & Drain My Battery on My SX-50 by Using the Built in Flash.
    & That's why I Got Turned Off with the SX-70, No Damn Hot Shoe to Hook On a Separate Powerful Flash!
    The SX-60, to what I Heard was a Joke, & Lost it's Lackluster, & Canon Took Away 2 Creative Features that I have on my SX-50, Color Accent & Color Swap, & the Quality on the SX-60 Wasn't All Great, the SX-50 was the Best Selling Camera of the SX Series when it Came Out in 2012, I was Very Impressed & Very Sold on the SX-50 & Bought it.
    I Wouldn't Recommend the SX-70, Nor Buy it due to a Lack of a Important Feature (the Hot Shoe), & that's Very Important to Me because I Do a Lot of Indoor Flash & It Wears Out you Produced Battery, & you have to Spend Nearly $50.00 to buy a Backup Battery for the SX-70.
    It's Just Not Worth it for this Camera😑

      HEY!!! From Los Angeles...I've been every place YOU"VE been when trying to find the best DSLR camera. I've had the Canon 50 & 60 for YEARS and 'Yes" shooting in low light is such a drag...I'm at Venice Beach every week shooting surfers, and on a cloudy day, I know to not expect good photos... Zooming in too far can also give me very grainy results.. I'm ready for a NEW camera (and I wish it could be a Canon) but don't know just what to do..
      If UR at Venice Beach and see a guy knee deep or on the shore shooting surfers, it's more that like to be me... PETE at V BEACH.

    It does not have USB charging as t has the 7.4 volt battery. Many Canon's with 3.7 volts have USB charging. UBS charging on the go s not practical as you cannot use the camera while it is charging. It is simpler to swap the battery.

    Today I came back home pissed off by my FZ1000Mark2 and I started looking around for a new camera. Hot shoe and charging surprisingly wouldn't be a problem for me, but the image quality is a terrifying issue. A "bright light only" limitation kicks it off of competition. Thanks for pointing out the downsides - this is something one will never hear so easily. Do you use mobile sync app, anything about it? Panasonic's ImageApp sucks here.

I'm headed to the Amazon so it'll be a mix of bright and very cloudy/understory dark and was hoping for something small with great zoom but I should just accept less zoom to have better shooting in the forest with the dslr. I'm considering a t-something-i and wish there was a perfect one-lens-for-every-condition but you can't have everything.

      Wow that sounds awesome - and definitely the right choice to go with a DSLR T8i maybe? Or SL3 for something more compact.
      The “one lens to rule them all” is kinda the holy grail of photography but a good, relatively affordable two lens setup is often an 18-55mm and 70-300mm.

I use it for high speed action shots (10 fps with focusing), soccer players full crop from other end of field, excellent low light APS c sensor, 1080p Xavc video. Same price as this Sx70. If you don't need (ununsable) 4k vid and (ununsable except in bright light) 1200mm zoom but want clear noise free pics in all light, get the sony.

    My little point & shoot just died. I thought I had narrowed it down to this one and the Panasonic FZ80. Now I’m not so sure. I like the zoom and I really need one that has a fast shutter speed but I mostly shoot family indoors. Some outdoor shots. Image stabilization is an absolute. Also my eyes are really bad. Cataract surgery here I come. I hate fighting with laptop and any device I plug into it. So something easy to load pictures onto a pc. No extra programs, I just want to plug it in and download. I’d like a point & shoot but one can learn some advanced features without being a manual only camera. I’ve been looking on B&H website that my brother sent me to. He’s a professional photographer so his cameras cost a house payment. I really don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on those little flimsy looking cameras. But i don’t know. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks!

      You’re not gonna be able to get photos of stars and stuff in absolute darkness, but long exposures at twilight or in a city with lights are are definitely useable - unless you plan on viewing in large size.

    I am newly interested in learning about photography. I've been looking at this camera. Thank you for mentioning other similar cameras to look into! Would like to know what bridge cameras, that shoot in RAW format, you might recommend? I don't feel comfortable jumping right into a DSLR, but want more than a point & shoot (which I have).

    • @hol3815
      @hol3815 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should add, I don't really care much about video aspects. I want to be able to take great photos, in all lighting conditions, as well as moving targets. Thanks!

    • @DigitalTechReviewsTips
      @DigitalTechReviewsTips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bridge cameras are essentially point and shoot cameras just with a lot more lens. While this is great for some things (like wildlife photography) it also usually means they’re pretty bad at low light situations and often produce worse quality images then comparable point and shoots.
      If you really want to learn about photography you should get a DSLR. Something like the Canon SL2 or T7 is about the same price of the SX60HS and you will be able to get a lot better quality photos thanks to the larger APS-C size sensor. There’s a reason why photojournalists almost always use a DSLR: of all the cameras they perform the best in all lighting conditions.

      No, Sony RX10 Mark IV has better mage quality but only 25x zoom but for serious work yo should go mirrorless but then for example 1200 mm f/8 is 25000 €.
      I say do not try to get a master of all trades. Get two cameras, one that gives you good image quality and another that gets more reach, or with mirrorless you might do with more lenses. Canon 800 mm f/11 is cheap at around $1000.
