I'm a truck driver in France and it doesn't get that cold in winter. Little to no snow at all and black ice is very rare. I could have never done this job in your country. It is way too freezing, snowy and... dangerous for my own life. I'm feeling lucky where I am after watching this video!
I admire you. Not because you're a woman or petite but rather because you are doing something you enjoy and you appear to be good at it. You also appear to have a very good work ethic. I don't doubt that you would do well at whatever you try. Be safe.
Driving in snow and ice is not easy. I admire your bravery. I always drive slow in bad weather or winds. I do my best to stay off road in smow and ice. An Ll bean long jacket always kept me warm, with feathers. I got it on sale years ago.
Just FYI, save your wipers for the slushy conditions. Rubber blades will eventually freeze and peel off. Use your heater to melt the windshield. Stay safe out there.
I moved from Florida to Montana in 2010 (I moved back home to Florida in 2018).This is a better explanation of how to install tire chains than anybody in Montana ever gave me.
I always keep a set of goggles in my truck. Like the kind you use for dirt bikes or snowboarding. They are absolutely brilliant for when you have to work around outside in heavy snow, heavy rain etc.. Especially if you have to pull over on the highway and needs to get outside. You don't have to squint your eyes, but are able to see the traffic - it makes it a lot safer
Try using a piece of wood to elevate the wheel by simply driving on it with the inside tire. It keeps you from having to pull forward or backwards a bunch of times. It was a game changer for me.
We had a decent amount of snow for the first time in years here in the Netherlands. Had to drive for DHL the night after it all fell. As a rookie, it was stressful but incredibly fun as well. Got stuck twice and had multiple moments where my single drive axle went all over the place while loaded. We don't have chains, but i would love the experience to run them. Had a blast at least but I'm glad its over now :)
Wow, huge respect for what you do. I hate the work that I do and considered driving long haul trucks, but after seeing several of your videos I'm just not built for it. You're amazing, you work so hard to do what you do! God bless you and you husband, great videos and camera work btw!!!
Something that might help you out when you chain up, if you can, roll forward onto them. When you roll forward you don't have to fight the quarter fender. Also if you hook the first ink onto the inside hook before you go to one that makes it tighter it will keep the extra links from hitting the trailers and the road. Also. On the lights, try spraying some wd-40 on them when doing your walk around. It helps keep them from getting frozen. You can usually just wipe the ice off.
I drove semi for 53 yrs everywhere in the US and Canada. Had only 1 minor accident, but I loved I-84 Portland to all parts eastbound. I wish the best for the American Driver today. In my day the automatic did not come about till 1979 and I was one of the first to drive one. How lucky today it's standard in most new trucks. Keep trucking you all and be safe out there.

@@gordythecat Drivers in Portland almost never have a need for winter tires. Its those 1 or 2 weeks every couple years that they could actually use them.
I've been driving through this winter blast for the last three weeks between Northern California to Illinois. It's been physically a challenge trying to avoid any accidents. Iced over Wyoming hills at night in the dark and Iowa steep declines. Even Arizona snowed hard enough to make me shut down. Pray for Texas. All roads are a no go, and I can't even go home to New York City right now. I understand how difficult it is right now. My 2020 Freightliner Cascadia truck is currently in the shop getting the air brakes fixed because the sensors were frozen and made them stop working. I'm using the engine brake and foot brakes all the way and thats hard
I'll be thinking of you and hoping you stay safe and well as you continue to deal with the awful weather conditions and all the complications that come from it. The work you do is vital and very much appreciated. Thank you.

Get two pieces of 2 x 6 lumber about a foot long each. Put them in front of the inside drives and roll onto them. Now you have a bit of space under the outside drives to chain.
Hi Shelby, greetings from the UK! It's great to see your consideration for other drivers, helping them chain up and everything. Also your enthusiasm and cheerfulness are an inspiration. And respect to BKM for the great camerawork and editing! Stay safe out there!

Such crazy weather all over the country right now! I'm in New Jersey and have been home throughout each of the pretty bad snowstorms we've been hit with. I can't imagine driving a truck through them! Be safe out there!
another tip for chaining up... without having to slide back a little onto chain... I carry a length of hook like 2 feet long, to grab the inner loop end, pull towards you and connect the other chain end... to make it easier, allow the outside portion of chain towards the inner side... once the inner ends connect, then pull the outer chain ends together and connect.
And yet, it seemed like there wasn't nearly enough snow on the ground to warrant using them. Drove for a decade in the great lakes snowbelts, and never once needed a set of chains. Carried them whenever I crossed the Rockies, and only needed them there once, and that was only because the WA highway patrol made me put them on. I could've crested Snoqualmie without them, because I grew up dealing with daily snow.

I used to carry a pair of 20' 3/8th chain just to pull my out if i ever got stuck. It did happen once. Now I pull flatbed so I always have chains, straps etc.
adding a little tip for chaining up, here is what I find very helpful... in prep for winter chainup, in dry good weather, I lay out chains and take out all tangles... then use a cheap carribiner and connect the 4 ends of the whole chain so that they come together... this way when I pull chain out of my box, chain is tangle free and ready to use... chain doesn't even snag on anything when oulling out of the box because I lay all the chain ends at the front edge of the box.
Shelby, if you wire the chain ends together for storage you never have to worry about untangling. Also remove the cross link closest to the end over which you back over and you can easier force the chain closer to the other end.

Hey Shelby!👋 I NM Otis the truck that you drive isn't setup like ur others like the cat walk and the snow chain hanger! Please be safe, careful, and always blessed! Can't wait for part 2! 😆❤❤👍
I cannot believe this young lady is excited about chains. She is very helpful I will wait at the bottom of Cabbage Hill and see if she will helps me. The company I drive for provides chains but since I am a relief driver. I never know what the conditions of the chains are so I carry one set of my own chains. I hate chaining because it is so dangerous. I know of 2 drivers that have been killed in Oregon while chaining. So be careful out there. Also you might invest in a heated jacker with hand warmers. I really like mine but I only wear it when I am chaining. Thank you for the nice cold video.
You know...there's this thing called a "weather forecast". It tells you the type of weather that is expected in a particular area in a certain time. Its a component of this thing called - Trip Planning.
There is another trucking you tuber (trucking with Schmidt) who also drives with his German Sheppard. He has a folding set of steps so the dog doesn't have to jump or get picked up. That might be something that makes it easier for your dog to enter/exit the truck.

Get a pair of insulated overalls for chaining up. You will not be cold. Not the most stylish look but we are talking chains here in a snow storm.
Some people seem to be used to running in the snow, and others seem to shut down pretty quick in order to be safe. Good luck out there.
Shelby I'm smiling at you this little big trucker with this huge heart ❤ .
I guess you're ordering chain racks for your teams!
Thank you for the time that you take to film on top of your truck 🚚 driving and day to day running your company . 😀 both videos where Great 👍.
Shelby, you are an inspiration with your happy attitude and bright smile. We love your channel. Blessings to you....
Pewag chains are made about 50 miles away from where I live, I only get the dual tire chains, not sure how well single tire chains work.
8:32 *Ouch the paint!*
You OTRs stay safe and be cautious out there. We had a Semi run over a state plow on I80 the other day.
Very smart to chain when bobtailing in those conditions and taking it easy!
be safe out there girl as always...
We wish you continued success in your work.
I remember this. I am based out of Portland. Came through this to stay in Troutdale.
