    I am now 68 years old and retired from trucking in 2005. Did a similar thing chaining and was also over Donna except I hit my jawline and actually broke it and was wired shut for 6 weeks. Your throwing chains is impressive. Take care of yourself and feel better.

      Oh I’m so sorry that happened to you. I not sure what you hit your head on but you should have went to the ER. Head Trauma is nothing to take lightly. I’m glad you your doing well. I had significant head injuries in the past ( not from trucking) so I know how bad things can get. Don’t feel shame we are glad you’re still here.

    Oh my Shelby! That is one nasty bump 😮 Always get a head injury checked out. As someone who has multiple concussions, I can tell you that symptoms don’t always appear right away. You may think you’re fine initially, but you never want to take any chances. You have a dangerous job and you are in the truck alone. Please see a doctor to be sure you are okay! Prayers for a quick recovery! ❤🙏🏻

    Shelby, You can at times (thru the years that I've kind a know you threw YT) be hard on yourself, even in the beginning of this video Dakota was trying to calm you down (yes I know Dakota is a give me attention seeker, but our 4 legged family members know when need Love)
    You are an amazing person with so much positivity that you try at times too hard on yourself.
    You should NOT be embarrassed, 1 of your many goals for even having your YT channel was to educate the younger folks and maybe some older 1's, so this is was a teaching moment, and although you got a George Forman shiner, you still look amazing.
    You and your 4 legged co-driver truckem up safe and as always Keep the rubber side down.

    Oh my, Shelby, I'm so sorry you injured yourself. From the looks of that shiner 4 days later, I'm sure it hurt like the dickens. Just make sure there are no lasting effects, like a concussion. Thank you, Shelby, take care, and please be careful and stay safe.

  • @Bendigo1
    @Bendigo1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Really glad you are ok. That was a NASTY bump. I have been made fun of for it, but I started wearing a hard hat (a bump cap would probably be better) when I was working around and under the truck for that exact reason. I am a lot taller than you are too so I tend to hit the underside of the trailer a lot more when messing with chains. It has saved my head multiple times.
    As for the getting those chains tight. Unless you have the hook tool that grabs the hook and pulls it through, it is almost impossible to get them as tight as you want them to be on all the wheels. But one way to get them a bit tighter is to go one hook more or less on the inside and yank like crazy to get a little more to play with on the outside. And a major issue with that type of chain is that even a little bit more wear on one tire than the others means you may not be able to get the same link as on the other tires. Your drive tires wear un evenly because of the scrubbing when you are turning and the different weight distribution between the front and rear drive axles. Unless they are brand new tires, usually the front axle will have a slightly larger tire circumfrence and can make the chains have a difference of anywhere between 1 and 3 links.

    Hun, you should not have driven with an egg like that. I know it's been a monthso clearly nothing bad happened, but head injuries are always super serious. Glad to see you made another vid, at least we know you're ok a few days later. 👍
    Also, there is no shame in getting hurt! Accidents happen all the time, there is absolutely no shame in them and don't be embarraressed either. Even when you're super experienced, accidents still happen.

    Being an old timer ( 36 years out here), it's fun watching a young gal like you busting it as hard as we did back in the day ( well we hit it a little harder running 3 or 4 log books) 😁, but you're doing a great job. A young ranch gal I worked with in the Wyoming gas fields would throw 3 railer chains better than most of the guys, and she wouldn't accept help from anybody. Be safe young lady.

    I keep watching these trucker vlogs lately and I'm getting more and more motivated to get into it. I'm 35 this year and I've always had trouble finding what I've wanted to do got a living. I joined the army and figured out it wasn't for me. I've been working at a good company making good money operating a brake press for years now and I'm so bored. I hate seeing the same press every day. The more I watch these, I find that this is more of a life for me. I enjoy being alone and I'm happy to work alone. Thanks for posting these. You help me stay motivated. I'm currently fixing my life that I ruined after being a drug addict for so long. I have no clue what I want to do with my life/career, then again I’m 19 and maybe I’ll never fully know what I want to do in life but I went and pulled the trigger and I’m starting school at the beginning of march and I couldn’t be more excited.

    Be proud of yourself. Not a trucker here….. You’d be surprised how many people do not understand how to put chains on. I stopped just before that same Donner Pass to put (required) chains on and saw a lot of people struggling. I think they saw how easily I put them on and a line formed - asking for help. Many offered money… like $100 bucks to put four vehicle chains on. I helped almost a dozen people and refused any compensation. I carry a folded-up 6 ft x 8 ft blue poly tarp I can throw down to keep my knees, butt and back dry. I was retired and had the time. Neighbor helping neighbor ( well sort of ). Sorry about your head. That looks very painful! Glad you’re ok. My first time chaining up in Oregon I broke my finger. The pain just made everything more frustrating when I made mistakes of putting my chains on inside out and backwards. They were those crappy cable chains from my company. After I got them all on right, I checked the current chain up order…and they ended it! So I took my chains back off and drove through Deadman Pass. I didn’t realize at the time that I had a hairline fracture in my finger, but it hurt for 2 months!

    Holy shit! The swelling at the end is mind blowing! Wow! I know it’s embarrassing for you, but I kinda wish you’d have added the clip of what happened, bc I’m not understanding what could’ve happened to have caused all that. And I think it would’ve been good to show people the kinds of mistakes that can be made. But, Geez. It might be embarrassing, but look at it like a battle scar. You got that doing work. Real work. You’re a fuckin trooper Shelby! A fuckin trooper! I think it’s attractive to see a woman own some shit like that. Lol I’m a grown ass man, and I think that would’ve had my ass in tears hahaha. I’m glad you’re ok.

    I am so sorry for you Shelby! I hope you feel better soon! Here in Europe, every trucker, whether self-employed or not, would have gone straight to the doctor and not only had a comprehensive check-up for free or little money, but as an employee also got as many paid sick days as necessary. But unfortunately, the richest country in the world has a health system that the third world would be ashamed of. Yes, I know, from the point of view of some old, white Americans, we here in the rest of the world are all socialists and communists.... I hope you get well soon Shelby! Your fans are worried about you!

    I'm not sure if you read these but I was a cop for 23 yrs. Now I drive truck for the last 8 yrs. I felt that driving my patrol car was an adventure. I really feel driving my semi is an adventure, I fun adventure without all police politics. I used to think at 55 I'm outta this squad car. Now I can't think of retiring from this adventure

    Hello just a bit of advice for chains, when using the tire chain bungee place the metal hooks facing OUT since facing IN can rub on the tire wall and there is a higher chance of ruining your tire, this is a bit of old timer advice that i was given when i started driving and since i have seen bungees destroy tarps when you place them facing in i have always followed it when putting chains on.

    Fun in the snow! The thing about chaining up is that you always do it in bad weather. Never easy! Winter weather is beautiful, but hazardous. Stay safe!

    You poor thing, that looks so painful!! In a recent video I talked about how I jacked myself in the face, HARD, while rolling up my landing gear. It wasn't even the recoil effect, it was that I had my face in a dumb position and I literally socked myself in the cheekbone with my fist that held the gear handle. Hard enough to make me feel like a cartoon character that had an anvil land on its head or something! Then a bunch of viewers shared that they had had similar things happen and it made me feel a little better. This was on a snowy day in Minnesota, when everything else possible was going wrong, like getting my tractor stuck under the same trailer that I couldn't seem to pull out of a downward-slanted dock. When it rains (or snows), it pours!!
    I agree, it's good that you shared because this is the reality of things that can happen on the road! And personally, it feels like inclement weather is the most likely time for these things to happen. The weather becomes a distraction, it affects the way you interact with your environment and it's easy to make even a small misstep that can lead to an injury. Thanks for having the courage to share, and don't be embarrassed for being human!!
    Keep on keepin on, sister!💪❄🚚

    You definitely don’t have anything to be embarrassed about! It’s a hazard of the job. I’ve been there. Gave myself a black eye sliding my tandems once. 😅 It was an older trailer with a lever, that kept getting stuck. When I finally got it free it yanked me forward and I smacked my face against the bottom of the trailer. 😩😅 The important thing is you are ok!! 🖤🖤 I hope you are feeling better, and I just want you to know I look up to you so much!! Thank you for creating these videos, and giving a girl like me the courage to keep driving!! 🤘🏽🖤

    I was driving local, regional and long haul for 24 years. I am now retired. Never went to California but hit some bad weather in the mountains of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. My rule of thumb was always, If it is bad enough you need to chain up, it is bad enough to shut it down. This not saying I did not drive in bad weather, but did my share of it, like icy roads on the Coquihalla.

  • @Be-ek9vi
    @Be-ek9vi ปีที่แล้ว

    Omg girl! You are so much braver than I. Trucking in the winter is bad enough just doing regional from out of WI and going home weekly but going thru mountains and chaining and everything else in that arena is too scarey for this 61 yr old, 3 yrs experience, grandmother. It gets tough just driving in such crap, having snow under an empty , king pin release not working, wiper issues, front camera covered in snow/ice knocking out any cruise option, trying to keep windows from fogging without cooking to death, knocking ice off trailer door hinges or trying to, just to get doors open, trying to pull king pin handle on ice, move tandems back at receiver on snow n ice... impossible...etc. etc etc
    You are absolutely amazing and then more amazing to me! I'm so glad it wasn't more serious. Praying for safe travels for all of us. 🩷

    Sorry you got hurt chaining up, hopfully you are much better now. I drove out of Reno for years, I know about chaining over Donner as I have plenty of times. Enjoy watching your video, not that you got hurt. This is the first time I have seen you and your videos, I hope to watch more of them. Take care, be careful out there and be safe.

    Watching again, need to say, last winter I was full brim hard hat with chinstrap, headlight and saftey goggles. Some say I look like a wild land firefighter, but I’m too slow to protect my brain. Snowqalme , stevens and bluestem only, but lots of chains. Thank god for my kearig keeping me warm while plows open the freeway

    Remember to keep the chain tightness so the short hook is outside and the solid part is against the tire. I have spent years going over pass’s so I feel you. A cheep pair of coveralls and a can of scotch rite is a good thing😊

    About 2 weeks ago while stuck waiting at our denver terminal I had to take an emergency run into the terminal (I love cheese but also have a dairy allergy, so you can probably guess where to). Had several inches of ice all over the lot. I ended up flying across the ice on my ass about 20 yards. Sore neck for about a week. Did I mention that being from Hawaii and stationed in SoCal and Hawaii when I was in the Navy the only other time I've seen snow and ice was basic training?
    Accidents happen to all of us. Just make sure you're fine (physically and emotionally) whether that means walking it off or seeing the doc. Keep being amazing, Shelby. And I hope you're doing better with some rest.
