  • Everything was FROZEN! | Trucking Through A HUGE Blizzard Part 2
Thanks for tuning in everyone! This is PART 2 of a 2 part series. Consider watching the first episode if you would like to better understand what is going on. In this video, I make my way from Portland, OR, up through Spokane, WA, across the panhandle of Idaho, through the icy roads of Montana, and finally arriving in Dickinson, ND. When I got there, the trailer I swapped with was completely FROZEN! Enjoy the video. :)

New, completely different career at age 52. I'm a 5'2" woman. Excited and scared. Watching your videos is good for my soul and intel, both! THANK YOU :) :) :)

You need the right tools in winter driving. Alcohol for air lines, deicing spray for glad hands and frozen lights. FedEx is notoriously bad at providing the proper training for winter driving conditions.

A good temp fix for worm or frozen grommets is to take a little grease from the edge of the fifthwheel and put it on the mating surface. Seals leaks right up.

I hope you got a good school, because how you start trucking has so much to do with how it's gonna go. I started at 45, seven years after retiring from the military, and picked a very good company with their own school, M.S. Carriers. But not all the company-owned schools are so great, and some of the companies that have schools aren't so great, either. I'm reminded of the two school-grads from Swift who were team-driving and busted at an inspection having duplicate CDLs down to the last detail, supposedly earned at a state facility before the end of
their driving school. So ask around about the school you're going to, and the company you're planning to work for.

That is one hazard with LED lights on both truck and trailer.. ultra low wattage, but the heat from an older incandescent bulb is enough to keep most of the ice from building up.

You & Decota are like many have already posted, you are a team & you are awesome ✊
    For below 0
1/keep air tanks free of water trailer included.
2/If you have alcohol bottle fitted to truck (but probably not) keep the
    alcohol bottle topped up.
3/ Go to a camping shop or Walmart store & Get
A/ a small Butane gun & plenty of cans of gas
B/ a small camping stove & plenty of gas
You’d be surprised when it’s below 0 you don’t need a great deal of heat to un- freeze frozen air system + your lights etc you can melt the thick ice then spray with de-icer ✊👍
I learned these tricks from Scandinavian drivers, added together they work + carry a fold up Military shovel 👍✊🍀

quick trick i learned living in extreme cold weather-keep a back of kitty litter with you when it starts to snow. A few things even on ice it gives just a touch extra traction , 2nd if you use it early morning and if not in a hurry it will help melt the ice it some how builds conductive heat just enough. Other than that you can also do half pound litter with 1/3 sand it doesnt take much to help. You can also opt to spread some on the tires tops it really comes to the traction in ice and snow so when your tires become wet they become slick so the more surface you can cover the more traction you can get.

For frozen wipers, set the cab heater to full blast aimed at the windshield, like on defrost, and crack the passenger window so it will flow as fast as possible and will let in enough cold air so as not cook you in the cab, that way the excess heat hitting the windshield will melt the ice on the windshield and enough heat will transfer through the windshield to the wiper blades and help them melt the ice off the wipers. Also I sometimes put the wipers on intermittent, and when they swipe, I have my hand out the side window so I can grab it as it changes direction, and flick it away from the windshield so when it hits back, it breaks off any excess ice. If you are in winter conditions a lot, take off the spray tips on the washer hose to increase the flow rate, (it also prevents ice from clogging the spray nozzle) add a water heater to the washer fluid reservoir so it will be heated washer fluid going through the lines and on the windshield.

When an ice storm hits, the almost frozen rain will coat everything in a layer of ice and it can be the most beautiful thing when the sun comes up and shines through the ice!
The only way to get out is before backing under the trailer, chip through and dig all the way down to the pavement and for at least 8 feet long (from the rear most tractor tire to the front tire) so you can get enough momentum to keep rolling in the snow, then before backing under the trailer dump a bag of water softener salt crystals where the pavement is. The all natural softener salt has coarse pea sized crystals that will aid in traction and will melt any residual ice. I had to do that once this winter when I got stuck on the ice, under the fresh snow, on a slight sideways incline, in an unplowed parking lot and the cab kept slipping sideways getting deeper and deeper in trouble.

I drove for years. It was fun but it got to the point, to where I hated to be alone for 4 to 6 weeks at a time.
I seen every state except for Maine.
Drove thru snow storms where I couldn't see the road, but I couldn't stop because if I did, it would be another car pile up. So I just watched mm signs to stay on the roads. Winter is no joke and no place for a truck.
So I appreciate every trucker out there getting supplies to the stores so the lives of others well be taking care of.

Shelby, a few things I had while trucking in Northern Alberta. Extra winter washer fluid. Un-sticks frozen tires. Pour a cup over each trailer wheel. The fluid flows down between treads and thaws out ice under the tire. After stopping for the night. BEFORE you go to bed. Move the truck forward a foot. The tires will not be frozen in yet. The brakes pads can stick to the drum. Have a 2lbs hammer and a 3 foot - 2" dia. solid steel bar. Give the drums a hammer through the wheel spokes. Carry airline anti freeze. Put in a thimble of fluid in each air line before hooking up. 5lbs propane tank and tiger torch. Heat up anything. Watch where you place the heat. Air lines melt like butter. Last resort if trailer is stuck. After you pin in. Release and move forward 6". Back-in hard.

To keep your windshield wipers free from snow building up is set your defrost to cold and put the fan on medium. You will freeze your windshield and snow will not build up on your wipers. My tractor has sensor in intermittent wipers that will keep them on depending on moisture. Anyways, safe travels, thanks for sharing your adventure!
