- There is very simple way and some cushions are going to get progressively a bit more complicated. So we'll start with the very simple way you just gonna measure between the cording seam to seam and here we have about 17 and a half inches then we will also measure front to back seam to seam and this is 17 and three quarter inches then we're gonna measure the thickness and this is 4 inches. Quite a few cushions were built exactly like this and you can follow those directions by themselves be just find. I do recommend that you open your cushion and look inside. When you do this, what you're looking for is…. I like to check the thickness of the actual foam that's inside the cover. I want to know if the foam that was used to fill this cushion is the same thickness as the…. this is called the boxing this area here on the cover. I want to know if that…if the foam is 4 inches. So, …in this case the foam is also 4 inches. What you might find in your cushion is this foam is, for example, four and a half inches. Now when that occurs you may need to replace it with four and a half inch foam. There is a few rules to do that. The next thing I want to check is how thick is the batting and this is polyester batting or the Dacron wrap and in this case it's about half inch to three quarters of an inch thick. You don't ever measure this when you're measuring for your cushion this is a filler material it makes the cushion have a little bit of roundness to it. So it's not like a square block of foam. What you might find in your cushions is this batting is instead of being three quarter inches to an inch thick you might find in your cushions this material is an inch and a quarter or even an inch and a half thick and if that is ever the case when you purchase your replacement couch cushion foam, you want to make sure that you order a batting that’s the same thickness. You could test the batting on your cushion and peel it away you might be able to reuse it. That's always a good idea. The other thing that you want to do when you open your cushion is peel back the Dacron and actually…. let's take this cover down a little bit more because I want to show you another part on here. You want to look… sometimes cushions are designed with a piece of foam just on the inside here to give this impression that you have a very rounded look. You can see that when you
eye ball straight down it, in this case I'm eye balling straight down and the foam is actually very straight right here, so there is not that rounded effect on this cushion, it was not designed to have a very big crown. This rounded effect is called the crown. I do recommend, because so many cushions are built with an engineered crown. You're gonna need to understand how your cushions were made so. If you peel back
the dacron a little bit and look, in this case you're gonna see that it's quite flat, So there is no tricks on this particular cushion in ordering a replacement couch cushion but you need to check those things and you can often send us a picture of what you're seeing and we can guide you through the process. I've got another cushion to share with you. So this cushion obviously is quite a bit fuller. This cushion is definitely not built the same as that, the foam inside might be of a similar thickness so again when you start the process to purchase replacement couch cushion foam, you're gonna want to unzip it. You'll find higher end furniture is made this way, where there is instead of using a polyester batting they'll have feathers they might also have polyester batting around the foam. Now, in this case its very interesting, if you follow the example we did here and try to order replacement couch cushion foam for this cushion, it's not gonna work for you. So in this example if I go seam to seam here it's about 5.5 inches but if I look at the foam that was used to fill it
the foam in this case is only 4 only 4 inches thick so it would be a mistake to try to replace this foam with 5.5 inch foam. It's not gonna fit very well. This cushion was not designed for 5.5 inch foam it was designed for a 4 inch foam.

I have matching couch loveseat and chair. The love seat needs new cushions but they are sup flat down literally to half its normal thickness. How do i measure the correct thickness when the cushions are flat. The other cushions i have are not as bad but still have lost thickness so its hard to get the true thickness i need. How do i go about that?

Take the foam out of the cover, put the cover on a flat surface and measure the dimensions of the cover (seam to seam)

I've looke at a lot of replacement foam websites. The general rule of thumb is the higher the density, the longer the cushion will last before it starts to break down and compress; some websites indicate the number of years of expected use (10 yrs, 20 yrs etc.) The higher the density, the more expensive the foam!

People keep asking this question but you refuse to answer. The whole reason we want to replace the foam is that over time it has become compressed, squished down, flatter than the original cushion. So how do we know which thickness of foam to order??
Hi Rene - If you have the cushion cover, you measure from seam to seam on the cover, with the cushion removed or with the cover stretched out, since that is the full size needed.
