  • This is a slight variation to a previous film I made. This time I am changing out feather inserts for foam and dacron inserts.
When measuring for the new insert I took an overall measurement for the width and the height of the cushion and reduced the amounts by 3"/7.5cms for the pink foam. The white foam was 1"/2.5cms thick and as it came down either side of the pink foam, it made up part of the difference on each end and top and bottom. The dacron just filled out the cushion cover enough without making it look too square on the ends.
I have been in the upholstery and interior decorating business for over 25 years as well as teaching these subjects both privately and in colleges. I have drawn on my years of teaching to put this video together and hope to have answered all your questions.
Please feel free to ask questions and I shall see if I can help you.
Change out those old feather cushions if need be.

Thank you for your comment. My editing just makes it look easy, as I cut all the bad words out, along with all the hair-pulling.
      Good luck with your project.

I’ve had a feather filled massive modular sectional for about 7 yrs. I’ve hated the filling since day 1. Now it’s super flat. This project may take me weeks to get done, but I must because for the same exact sectional I have currently costs $8,500-15,000 depending on the store. We purchased ours for about $2,700 in 2016. I still love the look, just hate the down feathers, I think they have an awful smell so I never sit in it. Thank you for the tips!

      Thank you for your comment.
Your cushions might be more like the ones in this video th-cam.com/video/22AFSwx5USY/w-d-xo.html
In this case, I would suggest once you have removed the cover with the feathers in that you put 2cm/1" firm/medium/soft density foam on both sides of the cushion and the dacron wrap to take up the space of the feathers as the cover will be rather saggy.
Or there is this video which will give you another idea th-cam.com/video/VRm_dQL7BnU/w-d-xo.html
Which is designed for seat cushions as the one you commented on was for the back cushions.
Before deciding on the density of foam replace the outer cover on the seat cushion and sit on it to see who it feels and decide what firmness you want for the seat cushions.
      Good luck with your project.

@@beinspired1487 thank you so much my lovely! I appreciate your reply and your help! I definitely will check your videos out and will probably do one seat cushion first to see how it works. I definitely want to be able to enjoy my sectional more than I’ve done in the past. Blessings to you!

@@mrsmdub259 Not a problem. Having a sectional or other seat/sofa that you can not use is such a shame. With luck, you will find a suitable solution to the problem.
I order my foam from The Foam Store which I beleive is a franchise in the US.
I would certainly search for a company that deals with foam as they can talk you through what they have, rather than a craft store as their markup is quite high and they do not have the variety of foams to choose from.
I do not advise using memory foam.

Hi there, I've got some older feather cusions that have lost some of their loft, but are still relatively comfortable. Would it work do you think to just add a foam rectangle inside to the "back" to give it some structure, while still maintaining some of the softness of the feathers? Rather than replacing them wholesale?

Thank you for the question. I did work on these seat cushions with the feather pillow tops which should help you with your project.
      th-cam.com/video/22AFSwx5USY/w-d-xo.html
It shows you how to replace the foam around the spring in the center of the cushion. I believe in keeping as much out of the landfill and also keeping costs down. Look for a supplier that is cheaper than going to the local craft store for your foam.
      Good luck with your project.

Very helpful and well done videos-both this back cushion demo and your seat cushion demo.
I think I understood how to measure the medium density medium firmness of the pink foam but if you are able, I was hoping to double check. I have a 24” x 23” x 4 “back cushion. Does that mean that I would order a 21” x 20” x 1“ sized pink medium foam, and then the larger dimensioned white soft foam (and of course the Dacron).
Thank you for any assistance. My first attempt at replacing cushion filling!

      @beinspired1487  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thank you for your question. Your medium-density foam should be 22" x 21" x 3", and the soft foam should be 30" x 71" x 1" so that it can be wrapped properly. The soft foam and dacron crunch down under the cover making it plump and soft.
I hope this helps, good luck with your project.

Thank you for your question. The film you found was for the cushions on the back of the chairs/sofas. I would recommend you follow this video for the seat cushions th-cam.com/video/VRm_dQL7BnU/w-d-xo.html
Here in the States, I buy my foam from the Foam Store, they seem to be nationwide. They will cut your foam to size and a pattern if you send them one. Start looking for a place like this or another wholesale foam supplier in your local area. I do not suggest getting it from a hobby shop as they do not have the various densities that you need in upholstery and it is usually quite a bit more expensive too.
I hope this was of use, good luck with your search and your project.
