  • A quilt flange adds extra interest and texture to a quilt and is so easy to make. Kim shows you how to add a flange to your quilt project with easy, step-by-step instructions.
    NOTE: I GAVE YOU SOME INCORRECT INSTRUCTIONS! YOU SHOULD PUT THE SIDE FLANGES ON FIRST, THEN THE TOP AND BOTTOM FLANGES AND THEN ADD YOUR BORDERS. DON'T ADD YOUR BORDERS ON WITH YOUR FLANGES!

    I’ve never added a flange, but will be trying it, soon!

    Flanges add so much interest to a quilt! I love making them. I tend to make mine a bit narrower; I use a 1.5 inch strip( finished size in quilt is 1/2 inch). Either way, super technique! Thanks, Kim.

    You didn't show us how the 2 flange and border pieces would be added to the 2 adjacent sides of the quilt. If you added those 2 sides in the same way as the side you demonstrated, you wouldn't have the right angled inner corner flanges around the center square only. Instead, you would end up with the flange extending all the way out to the outer edges of the 2 adjacent sides of the square which you wouldn't want. Wouldn't it have been better to simply add the flange pieces separately to the sides of the center square of fabric before adding the border strips to the outside edges?

      Thanks for the question, Jane. I think I made a slight mistake saying that you could put the border on with the flange - not sure what I was thinking! Yes, you are right! You should add the flanges at the side, then add the flanges at the top and bottom and THEN add your borders. I'll put an explanation on the video. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention.

    How do you do the corners? Do you just stop like when adding a border?

      I am wondering the same thing. It would have been helpful to see all four sides.

      Yes, adding a flange is the same as adding borders.

    How about corners? Love your sewing table, by the way. I'm green with envy!

      I add the flanges on the same way as you would with obrders - no corners to worry about.

      I actually got it used from a guild member. It's by Sylvia Designs. You can find them at www.sylviadesign.com/

    If your quilt is already quilted may you still do the flange and binding the same way as your showing . I did note you mention the flange before the quilting

      Yes, you could also do it that way, Pearl.

      Hi Faith! These are added on the same way I do borders - no corners to worry about.

    Just a thought. If the flange is put on the perimeter of the quilt while adding a border to all sides, how does one deal with the corners where the flanges meet? Do the flange corners just overlap or are they joined together into one continuous flange. I couldn’t see what you had done on the finished quilt that you showed us as an example.

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should've explained this better. The flange is put on like a border and you put on one side at a time so yes, they would overlap.

    How do you turn a corner on a flange?

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't need to worry about that as a flange is added much like a border - one side at a time. As you'll see in the video, it's not like adding a binding that is continuous all around the edge of the quilt.
