  • Nowhere else on Earth is the difference between the tranquillity & beauty of the physical world and the brutality & disorder of the people who live in it brought into such sharp contrast as it is in the former Soviet satellites that span the gap between Europe & Asia. Nagorno Karabagh. Ossetia. Abkhazia. Ingushetia. Chechnya. Dagestan. Who’d even heard of them before the 90s? Nowhere has the millennial thirst for independence combined with exploding nationalism to such deadly effect as it has in the new nations and ethnic enclaves of Caucasia. And right in the middle of them all lies Georgia. Today it’s a place trying to emerge from the iron grip of the Kremlin but once it was a land of mystery and dragons… This is where Prometheus was bound to his rock. Where Medea cast her spells. Where one of Noah’s sons set up house after the biblical flood. Where Jason went in search of the Golden Fleece.

This series really does embody the old adage, "It's the journey, not the destination..." All the amazing little "sidetracks" in this roundabout journey are simply amazing and fascinating!
And what's perhaps part of the fun is how it makes you imagine what all of this must have looked like thousands of years ago.

As a child I never missed an episode of Jason and the Argonauts on Australian radio. Did you know that British actor Sir David Jason chose the surname Jason because like me he was awestruck by the story of Jason and Argonauts? Now you are on Jason's journey. Thank you, David. This is such a pleasure!

A very interesting documentary, very good style.
    Couple of things:
    1. Alexander the Great was never defeated and he did not enter the Caucasus area. In fact after Asia Minor and Egypt, he was in a hurry to get to Persia.
    2. Like somebody here already mentioned, Medea helped Jason go through the challenges given by her father the King which she did against his well and ran away with Jason.
If we look at Medea being Jason's anima helping him through the task, in accordance with the archetype David follows Jason's footsteps with the help of the lady ethnologist that is his anima in his story.

This video is not the first time I've read or heard that the legend of the golden fleece has a small kernel of truth to it. A few years ago, I heard or read someplace that for years, the legendary kingdom called Colchis, where Jason and his Argonauts went to capture the fleece, was located in the country we now call Georgia. In addition, the gold prospectors use sheep or ram coats to collect the gold flakes in the streams as a form for gold panning. But this video is the first time I've actually seen how that sheep skin was used in such a way to collect the gold on the skin.

David states in this documentary that he was in Georgia 10 years prior to filming this documentary, and at that time he was there when the first president of the independent Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, was elected. That was in 1991. I was there. Those were very difficult times: Russian government cut out the major gas supply, and previous economic infrastructure had completely collapsed. People had to stop driving cars due to the gasoline shortages. We could only get electricity for a few hours per day. There were huge food shortages and we were all starving. My heart was broken to see how skinny my parent became suddenly. My dad kept "Slimfast" packages by his bedside donated by the US humanitarian agencies, and my mom was hiding a chocolate candy under her pillow...Fortunately things are so much better now.

What an interesting people. They have their traditions but they also have oil wealth so they should do alright. I just keep thinking of that Beatles song "Back in the USSR" "..Moscow girls make me sing and shout, and Georgia's always on my my my my my mind." I'm glad they're not under Russian rule anymore. Long live Georgia.

Just back from weekend in kutaisi (30Euros return from Vienna !) Interesting place great food and wine!! People were very friendly = Thought origin of the legend is that the mountain people pan for gold using sheepskin which traps the fine but heavy gold particles.
