The Mysterious Lost Buddhas Of Afghanistan | Inside Afghanistan | Timeline

  • Afghanistan is not so much a country as a series of shifting borders. A place with no easily definable physical or civil boundaries. A place where war is an everyday fact of life. A place where more children will learn to use a gun than will go to school. About 1.5 million have been killed during the past 20 years of war. Perhaps another 4 million have fled. Every major road has been torn apart by tank treads. Almost every major building left standing has been blown full of holes. This is the most militant Islamic state on Earth but it was once was peace loving and Buddhist. In the Bamiyan Valley north of Kabul the two largest statues of Buddha on the planet were carved in the third century. David Adams was the last Westerner to exhaustively film them before they were blown up in 2001.

As an Indonesian which my country before being a Muslim majority country was Hindu/Buddhist, we are glad that till this day we have been preserving our forefathers heritage, the largest Buddhist monument in the world the Borobudur still stands tall here in Central Java.. I believe its construction was in conjunction with the building of the Bamyan Buddhas

Afghanistan didn't lost its histroy but Hazara people lost its Histroy. Taliban/Pashtun destroyed Bhudda of Bamiyan because it belongs to Hazara people and it is identity of Hazara people. I hope one day International Community understands Afghanistan polictics. It is more of ethnic issue than Religion. Taliban just uses Religion to kill other ethnicities in Afghanistan. And IDK why International Community is supporting Pashtuns from past 250years. Maybe IC don't want peace in Afg by supporting Pashtun. BTW I hate calling Hazarajat/Khurasan a Afghanistan, Afghanistan was named by British and was gifted to Pashtun by snatching from Turks/Tajik.

Crikey, this precious bit of film is an international treasure. To see the Bamiyana Buddhas intact, captured on film and videotape, is sad but incredible. I’ve recently been reading and learning as much as I can about the Silk Road, the nomadic horse tribes (and warriors) of the Eurasian steppe, and other parts of history they don’t teach us in the West unless it’s at the university level, and it’s vital to understanding the forces that shaped the world as it is now. From Alexander clashing with the Persian in Bactria (Afghanistan), through the centuries the region has been occupied or fought over by the Kushans, Sassanids, Kabul Shahi, Saffarids, Samanids, Ghaznavids, Ghurids, Kartids, Timurids, Hotakis and Durranis…and of course by the British, the Soviets, and the Americans. And all for what? Nothing ever changes. To watch this lull in the fighting and see David interacting with the Taliban before 9/11 and the start of yet another 20-year war and occupation is heartbreaking. Many of the people shown here are probably dead, due to mines/IEDs, the Taliban, the American and allied forces, Daesh, or just hunger and exposure. Scenes like the volleyball game and people actually smiling and relaxing in the shade just make the other realities of life in Afghanistan that much more tragic. What a harsh land and a cruel world. 😢

I was with a team that removed the ammunition from a large cave complex along with the New Zealand military nearby in 2004. Unfortunately the buddhas had been destroyed by then. But we did go through the same tunnels to the top shown in the video. There were two large Buddhas along with the small one in the center. Separated by some distance. Very pretty landscape.

I know we went in past sort of a fence signifying certainly you were not allowed to go but there was nobody around, so we went, then up some stairs carved through the rocks but I couldn't describe it precisely. What I remember better is being in the "head" of the Buddha looking through his "eyes" at the valley below. It was a beautiful day the valley looked so beautiful There was probably some paintings inside but they must have been really faded, I don't remember them much...as I said that was long time ago but even though very blurry the memory still evoke some nostalgia mixed with wonder. Maybe just because I was young? But I broke in tears when I saw the photo of them destroyed by th Taliban later on

So interesting to watch. In 1971 I stood on the head of the big Buddha in Bamyan and took photos of the greek paintings above. I also walked to the city of cries (shar i ghulghula) nearby where you could dig ancient coins out of the ground with your hands. Apparently he did not get to the fantastic lakes of Band i Amir not far from Bamyan where I had some refreshing days. The same year I also saw the then much younger lion Marjan in the Kabul zoo as well as the very beautiful royal palace in Paghman with a very old railway with locomotives and all. In Mazar I spent half a day discussing religion with the local mullah in charge in the shadow of the cool walls of the blue mosque. He did not mind that I was a non believer. What a beautiful and promising Afghanistan that vanished

Your question also shows that you are suffering from inside ( your mind) the anger came out of you on behalf of somethig or someone .
