Basically, Jason is like a player thrown in an open-world game: always doing side quests when he could have finished the main story in a quarter of the time.

K. T. The story’s are 1000s of years old. They could have just said he was a good fisher or they brought a ton of bulls or something. I think the people who original wrote Jason’s story wanted to make it longer for more add revenue.

What I love about greek mythology is the fact that literally everyone is kind of a prick in their own right; the heros, the gods, the love interests, the secondary characters hell even the bystanders...
Yeah nearly everyone actually has a balanced and a more natural human personality meaning they can behave or have both good or bad intentions depending on time or place. Unlike other myths from other countries which have basically a glorified hero and an evil character,monster etc. I love and enjoy these myths too but i prefer the greek ones any day !! Probably im kind of biased since im Greek myself!
The same is true about Greek history, ancient and modern!

I was a child in Egypt in the 1980’s and the 1960’s Jason and the Argonauts movies along with Clash of the Titans were my introduction to Greek mythology. They still have a very special place in my heart.

Heracles was too op so the Gods had to take him out of the story themselves
Basically his time with the Argo is his sidequest. Also props for good ol' Herc to not hog all the glory, because he was only there to help Jason. When you think about it, Jason already struck gold the moment Heracles became one with the crew. Not to mention, even if by sheer reluctance, Atalanta.

Heracles was the True Veteran and Hero being through a helluva lot and learning from past terrible mistakes.
Some people seem to be rather upset about me saying the island of Lemnos was in modern day Turkey, it is a Greek island that was under Roman and Ottoman rule that happens to be just outside the Anatolian peninsulas in the northern Aegean region but it has been reclaimed as a Greek island for well over a 100 years. I stand by my original statement however that the Lemnos Jason visited sucked.

Yup. I watched it early 90s also. Seems like thats when a lot of kids watched it. Probably because it was a favorite of their parents who shared it with their kids. Often having recorded it off tv onto VHS.

Dude, my grandmother introduced me to this movie, to clash of the titans to Alfred Hitchcock, twilight zone etc. It has always gave me a spark for histroy, mythology, sci fi and fantasy. A great video, with great information!

It depends, in some versions he tells her she can't come because she's a woman. But all versions are equally canon, so go with the version you like best. About the only consistent crew members between versions is Heracles and Orpheus.

Me to
Percy Jackson got me into it as well after that I desired to learn as much about myths as possible. It went from Greek to to Egypt to Chinese then to Japanese, after that Native American and it continued from there where I’d want to know as much of the unknown as possible. However the VERY first myth that sparked this interest in myth was the Legend of Hercules & 12 Labors, a tale of a hero who used his strength & cunning to complete tasks that are believed to be so impossible no ordinary man could succeed.
I have waited thousands of years for this! I have carnal knowledge of every goddess, I’ve watched thousands of mythology videos but nothing excites my blood than watching one of your videos!

You forgot to add that Medea finally got over Jason and became happy with a Japanese Assassin. Then spending her days as a loving housewife while collecting saber figures.
Somewhere along multiple media in this franchise are the reasons I both started sympathize with Medea and cannot take Jason seriously anymore.
Edit: Than again, It's been a while, but the video helped to remember that although I liked this tale when I was a little, the actual myth doesn't make Jason look much better

One of the most beautiful thing about Fate's Jason is his friendship with Heracles, he respect and fully trust Heracles, and Heracles will never allows anyone mock Jason, he would kill them without a second thought.
When I was in 2nd grade, we had a short time of learning about mythology and fables which was punctuated with a field trip to see a play about Jason and the Golden Fleece. I've been hooked on Mythology since then and your channel has been very satisfying.
This is the same story that started my obsession with Greek myths and legends. You did it justice and then some
What I've learned from the story of Jason and the Argonauts:

The island of Lemnos located in Turkey??? It is and has always been a GREEK island! Plus, in Jason's times the Turks were a nomadic people living on the Mongolian Altay plateau! What is now called Turkey was called back then Asia Minor!
Jason’s story is most memorable for me because how much of a sissy he was the entire time, he was always on the backseats of important event and when matters are resolved it’s usually not because of his knowledge or decisiveness, but the spotlight is on other characters. If Chiron has to turn in his grave because of one of his students, that would be Jason.
1) Yeah, basically everything he "did" was actually with help of other people, he was only the one to execute the plan. Pathetic for a hero, indeed.
2) Chiron is immortal and can't die, Jason probably is just making him feel more pain than he would usually feel.

Jason and the Argonauts was what got me into Mythology also. I loved that old movie. still do.
I was born in 1984 in Yorkshire and I work with the Greek Deities. I also started to feel that love of them from the 1960's Jason and the argonauts film. It was so nice to hear someone say the same thing.

The Ray Harryhausen Jason And The Argonauts wasn't my introduction to mythology as a whole, but it was one of my earliest exposures to GREEK Mythology, so I'm in almost the exact same boat as you, my friend!
Also, I dont know that I'd call Medea insane considering how many other Greek myths feature people doing similar bizarre murders. Plus the whole "Brainwashed into loving some guy because the gods felt like it" thing. She's a major victim in this story.

Also the spell was caused by Aphrodite, so her wrath should have been directed towards her, not toward various random people like a person Jason ended up falling for, or their own children.
There's also a big difference between understanding a victim and defending a mass murderer because some other person slipped them a "love roofie".
If you say that she e.g. wants to ruin Aphrodite and various other meddling gods after she found out, that I can understand. If you say she wants to murder several people because of something gods did to her - some of them children, my understanding ends there. She is no victim of those people, she is either evil or insane.

Jack Callaghan God of war is one of my favourite game series.
How about a video on Medea? She is much more than just a helper-maiden in the Jason story. It is because of her magic (not blessing) that Jason accomplished the tasks. Medea drugged the dragon to sleep enabling Jason to secure the golden fleece. It was her cunning and initiative that resulted in Pelais' death, relieving Jason and his father of the responsibility. Then Jason drops her to marry Glacous (spelling? - daughter of the King of Corinth), and her terrible revenge takes effect. Her escape in a golden chariot supplied by Helios shows she is still in good standing with the gods. Breaking his vow with Medea makes him lose favor with Medea. Her story is highly complicated, and has many versions. I would love to see you unweave it. I don't think she is insane, but a leader.
Plus I mean Jason had the favour of both Hera AND Zeus and cocked it up along with pissing off his sorceress wife. Dude was an idiot.
Wish i found your channel a month ago. I just finished reading/listening to the Argonautica and I got so lost so many times. I'm familiar with Greek myths but not with Greek epics, especially the writing style. But your video is currently helping me understand what I just read.

I love mythology, especially Greek mythology. The stories never seem to be just black and white there is usually a grey area in the middle. Heracles and Jason were the two stories that grabbed my interest for mythology when I was a kid.

The "Golden Book Encyclopedia" was my entry into mythology - and I still didn't get how much nobler Hector was than Achilles. Just a picture of a corpse being dragged around Troy.
The 1963 version of "Jason And the Argonauts" hooked me too. I watch it whenever I can. The Harryhausen effects never get old to me - especially since I learned how painstaking they were to accomplish.
I liked the 2003 version too - watched on TH-cam. A different telling; a different Jason - perhaps truer to the myth than its antecedent. More in line with your account. I liked the inclusion of Orpheus and the female who I don't think was Atalanta.
Subscribed approaching two years ago but haven't revisited in nearly a year. I learned about the Krampus from you. And this video, was amused to find Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite collaborating to help Jason. They're the trio that Paris was forced to judge resulting in the Trojan War. Still can't get over Athena stripping naked to impress a mortal....

Jason and the Argonauts sumed up in a video game format: the quest was level 50, Jason was level 20 at the beginning but his crew was all level 80.

Hey friend! Nice work. My first call, came from the Odyssey, but I feel the argonauts are even more legendary... Now! Lemnos is at modern day Greece, not Turkey. And women smell nice there nowadays... The crew fell onto the seirenes too at some point, any they were saved by Orfeus' soothing song, which captivated them more than the seirenes. Orfeus was maybe even as legendary as Heracles at this quest, as he was the one who put, the golden fleece guarding dragon to sleep, again, with a song. Also, on the ship was Laertis too! Odysseus' father. You see, the argonauts, were a generation of heroes, before the Trojan war heroes! Heracles at one of his adventures, blessed baby Ajax with his lion skin, making him nearly invincible! Ajax of the Trojan war! This is what I find really wondrous and legendary in this story! The argonauts were GolDRoger, Whitebeard and Shanks to the Luffies of Troy! They were their fathers and inspiration! Keep living the Mythos people! Bye
My grandfather got me hooked on Jason and The Argonauts. Talos scared the crap out of me. Also the 7th voyage of Sinbad was epic. The cyclops are dope in that movie. The sound they make was terrifying.

'The Immortals', which is an underrated movie imo - starring a pre 'Man Of Steel' Henry Cavill...was my introduction into Greek myths. 🎬

The tale of the ram with the golden fleece is a tale in and of itself, it would be a nice follow-up to this video, considering their connections.
Interestingly enough, one of the peoples in Irish mythology are believed to have actually had contact with the Greeks, in the worst way possible. The Fir Bolg, one of the people mentioned in Ireland's Book of Invasions (the collection of mythological stories about who came to settle Ireland) are believed to have spent several generations as slaves of the Greeks before returning Ireland with the sacks of fertile soil they spread bout the rocky lands of Ireland. From what I've gathered this mostly going on what little is said about the people that became the Fir Bolg and where they went when they left Ireland. But it's interesting to think that these peoples that were treated peripheries that barely got mentions in the stories might actually be major players in the mythology and lore of other nations. Just a little something to think about as the Feast of Saint Patrick approaches.
I loved this story when I was a child. It encouraged me to learn more regarding Mythology from across the World. The story of Jason and his endeavors was a tale of Trade. Greece opened up trade throughout the Mediterranean and eventually the Black Sea where the Caucasus tribes used sheep fleece to collect gold from the creeks and streams, learning how the use the plough and many elements of the story that was actually related to reality.
No way! You grew up on several old classics too? Man, Jason and the Argonauts is a movie of my childhood too! I also love Clash of the Titans (the original from the 80s), that's the first movie that got me interested in Greek mythology. Jason and the Argonauts came in at close second. :) One of the most memorable parts of that movie is when the Argonauts finally get to Colchis, and they see Medea and her other priestesses dancing before the altar of Hecate. I love the music of that scene, and it makes me wish I could dance that gracefully. LOL I also remember the harpies scene, and it wasn't until many years later that I learned that the harpies are actually the sisters of Iris, which got me thinking, how the hell do you get the harpies and the beautiful goddess of the rainbow all as sisters? I guess that's Greek myth for ya. :P
I gotta say, at the end of listening to this video, I found myself somewhat melancholic. Jason wasn't the greatest guy, but I feel sorry for him. After all his great feats, he gets killed in such an anticlimactic way, and alone and lonely. I guess you can say he had it coming, to a degree, but still, kind of a tragic life. He goes to all these great lengths to accomplish things as a Greek hero, only to all have it fall apart, kind of a wasted and pathetic life, and that's very sad. I've read about The Divine Comedy and Dante places Jason in one of the circles of Hell reserved for seducers, since Jason seduced a few women on his way to getting the Golden Fleece, which I thought was pretty harsh. But hey, Dante is known for having hated all Greek heroes (especially the ones involved in the Trojan War), so that's probably the real reason why he put Jason in there. LOL
One of my favorite parts of the real myth of Jason is where they get past the sirens having Orpheus play his lyre to overpower their voices. I've seen that compared to Odysseus wanting to hear the sirens' song, and how well that worked out for him. I've seen this comparison of the two scenes as a way to warn against wanting to long for something that's not good for you. If you pine away for something that's bad for you, it will be hard for you to let it go so you can appreciate better things in life. But if you face that thing with something better, and the hope of better and healthier things, you will overcome that obstacle, as Orpheus' melody had overpowered the sirens. It's for this reason that Orpheus has held a special place in my heart for a long time now. :)

I actually hadn't seen JATA until after Clash of the Titans' 81 (well after it had been popular in syndication). Continues to fascinate me to this day.

My dad and I rented the old movie once. We always referred to it as Jason and the Fuckin’ Argonauts. Good times.
I watched the same movie at my grandparent’s house all of the time growing up!
Also grew up in the 90s and also loved this film and story. 1997 Disney movie Hercules made mention of Jason and the Argonauts and I loved it. Got hugely into all kinds of mythology from the story and has become one of my biggest hobbies.
And Disney's Hercules also had a spinoff series with an episode featuring the Argonauts, with Jason voiced by William Shatner.

The most common account (the only one I have ever heard) tells that Atalanta drew first blood, and Meleager dealt the killing blow. The accounts of Homer, Hesiod, Apollodorus, Diodorus of Sicily, and Ovid all corroborate that. Where did you hear that Jason killed the Calydonian boar?

So there's a good theory out there that says: that the tale of Jason and the Argonauts is a memory of the first greek settlers in the Black Sea around the Bronze Age, from the mycenaean period of Greece. Around 1300 BC or sometime before that date.
Finally someone I can relate too 🤣. Literally how I got into mythology thanks to Jason and the Argonauts.
