Except for one thing. The fact that the end portal is 1-way as long as the dragon is around. The ancient builders couldn't have communicated the existence of enderdragons to anything in the overworld. Not before turning into enderman at least. The illagers would know about the portal, and that is it. They wouldn't know about anything past it.

I meam the only way to return is by killing an ender dragon, which then will open a portal to the overworld, since Jean is the last dragon and wished to be preserved they couldn't kill her and in result could never get back to the overworld.

The elytra's were also probably made with part of the dragon's bones, making them much stronger than just a bunch of phantom membranes. When your elytra breaks, all your left with is the dragon bone and a bit of remaining dragon wing. Now you can add phantom membrane back to it so it actually can provide enough lift to fly again, but you can't make it completely out of membrane because it falls apart without something stronger like dragon bone to keep it together. Kind of surprised you skipped over this possibility, as it makes even more sense.

I actually thought of my own theory as to why the phantoms look so different from the ender dragon. I believe that the reason why they’re smaller and look different is because the phantoms are the dead zombies of the male drone dragons. See, it’s important to note that the only ender dragon we ever see is a female, as shown by our prize once defeating the dragon: an egg. I believe that this species of dragon reproduced similarly to bees, where they would once in a while purposely produce males to send their genes to another female. Evidence of being able to control what gender an unborn baby will have is seen in real world crocodiles, where the temperature of the burrow incubating the eggs will determines if it’s a boy of girl, and I think the dragons can do the same. This would also explain their presence in the over world, as the males would be able to fit through the portals while the females are much too big. However, going between dimensions can cause a creature to zombify, like with piglins. This would also coincide with your theory about how they sense the player, but also explain why they attack the player instead of normal mobs, because they were trying to defend their queen from the old builders. Just wanted to say that, in the last snapshots, we can found piles of different shades of blue wool in the ancient cities, and these colors are kinda reminiscent of the warden, so I think your theory about the warden being built by men is getting more and more accurate ! (And also I just wanted to mention the giant fossiles that we can find everywhere in the soulsand valleys and very rarely in the overworld, and the size if these kinda matches the enderdragon's size...)
I was waiting for Matt to point out the fact that Phantoms spawned in The End in snapshot 18w07a, a very early 1.13 snapshot and this alone almost confirms the theory. Even so, I never thought about they being related lol
Makes sense. Imagine bridging from one island to another and you get attacked by 10 mini ender dragons. Too hard wouldn't be difficulty in fighting, it would be difficulty not getting pummeled into the void.
Phantoms originally spawned in The End in snapshots but they changed that because it made the end fight too hard. There is clearly a relation between the Phantom and The End, and them being the undead version of Ender Dragons is not too much of a stretch. However I do feel that your illager interactions with the ancient builders creates a little too many loopholes within your own theory since you earlier said that the end portal was one-way so illagers should not know about what is in the end.

I think the phantom is just a male enderdragon. like with bees the males only serve to use of reproduction. just leaves the question on why they are in two different dimensions.
11:10 The way I personally see it is that really they're attracted to insomnia simply because it's easier prey. Something that hasn't slept much would be tired and weary and much easier to take down than something that's well-rested. This can be seen with almost all predators in the real world which prefer to target weaker game, such as the old, young, injured and sick.

probably its before the wither attacked them/warden invasion, since those end portal exist even before those event. and after the event they cant get out because of the horror on the overworld making them "trapped" since they had to be in the end because they cant deal with the overworld, warden and wither.
Endermen can travel to the overworld. And in some cases (From what I have seen) Illigars will drop whatever they are doing and start attacking endermen.

5:47 the other problem is that the damage to the body when sleep deprived happens regardless of hallucinations. Killing all the phantoms stops the damage making them not a product of the brain self explaining why it’s hurting via hallucinating
To add to this theory, Phantoms used to be able to spawn in the End as well, and were much bigger (and there size can still be increased with commands).
Question: how could the illagers have known about the end at all if the end portals are a one way trip? When the ancient builders went through they had no way to return. He said so himself, it’s how they went extinct. This is further supported by the lack of end items like the elytra (btw what’s with your pronunciation lol) or the purpur blocks. So what gives?
i have one theory of my own that might also work. The phantoms are yes, the ghosts of the dragons, and meant to be the dragon, or what was left of it. For an idea, the builders hunted the dragons, they would've torn off the wings, taken the tail for somn, taken meat and limbs from it, took the neck part for some things, an either parts of the head or the whole head. The phantoms are just what the dragons ended up looking like after a hunt was done. It was possible that the builders would've taken parts like that back to the overworld as trophies or to use the tools of the overworld to further take apart the bodies. The illagers would've found what was left of these bodies and tried to make a dragon themselves from it, like you said, to try to bring the builders back, but this would've been an entirely new experiment, and one that wouldn't've gone to well. The dragon body would've tried to rebuild itself but missing so much would be unable to, the skin would come back differently shaded from trying to regrow, the dragons would've lacked muscle tissue leading to bones being visible, an all the missing limbs would be too far damaged to come back, and the mind, being broken and misshapen, would lead it to have a hunger for insomnia. also, phantoms do stop attacking entirely 11:41, idk if it was just the server i was in but if you sleep for 6-10 seconds, they quit attacking. This could connect to the broken mind part.
The fact that elytras can be repaired with phantom membranes just tells me that the ancient civilization that travels to The End is probably sleep deprived

one thing that i think is just a minor thing that matpat says (and did say in previous episodes when talking about the wool portal) is that the ancient builders came FROM the end portals, which i dont think is the case. We already have speculated that the strongholds were made to escape the wither or the rising tides that flooded the monuments. how then would the ancient builders come from this structure if they hadn't had any reason to build it yet. Not to mention that the portals are one-way anyway. I think it is more likely that the ancient builders came from the end at world spawn, just like the player does if they don't have a bed to spawn in when they escape the end. then, as the illagers watched their gods escape from the overworld, not fully understanding how the portals function, attempt to recreate the portals as a means of opening a door for the ancients to come back through. This also opens the door for more speculation. If you emerge from the end at world spawn, is the player a remnant of the ancient race that somehow managed to escape the end without having beat the dragon, or is there some way that when we left the end, the ancient race wasn't so ancient, and that somehow as we were traveling through the dimensions, our entire race would have gone extinct. this would explain how the player knows to go to the end in the first place, as so little in the world would actually provide us with that knowledge, as well as explaining why we would slay the ender dragon, as when we left the end, the ancient builders were still consistently hunting down the dragons.
How did the Illagers know about the what was housed in the End? (Namely the Ender Dragon). The End portal is one way, thus no survivors could return to tell the story of the Ender Dragon. This lack of a way back is the entire basis for the theory that the Ancient Builders turned into Endermen...
Well, we did get disc 5 where a player(builder?) (builderss he left as I heard hammering of construction) who's been close to withers, enderdragons, and then met the warden in the overworld back after they returned. Mojang may be changing the story (like the additions of phantoms and their part) to make it more connectable in a way?
As I stated in my other comment, the old builder COULD kill the dragon and make their way back to the overworld. They have elytra, and this means they had the ability to kill ender dragons. Why didn't they though
Hey MatPat! Love where everything is going with Minecraft lore and all the things with the Deep Dark, it’s amazing! One thing I would LOVE to see is a theory on the Ghast, and maybe the Blaze. Anyway, my personal theory on the Ghast is that when about half the builders from all across the Overworld first entered the Nether, the pressure caused the portals to be unstable, and as soon as they entered, the portals leaked, cracked and eventually exploded, resulting in the ruined portals we see now. When they got trapped inside, they tried to make obsidian, but to no avail as the intense heat forbid the existence of water. After a while, they became insane and started to kill eachother for sport. This broke out into a civil war, making the soul sand valleys we see today. Some used the primitive power of magic to combine the souls of their fallen to create the Ghast, a firebreathing abomination to destroy the others. Those who remained met the Piglins, whom they raided and stole obsidian from to get back out. I know that’s a lot to dump, but tell me what ypu think!
My version of this theory is that the phantoms are the "butterfly" to the ender mite, see ender mite(larva) -> shulker(the cocoon) -> phantom. the phantom(using the corus fruit powers similar to ender mite/shulker) went through the void into the overworld

@@thewithergamer1736 rats are larger and have larger tails. rats also have different behaviors then mice. Rats prefer large cities and damp dark undergrounds while mice prefer a warm enviroment like a woodland area or a rural home to stake out in.
This makes a lot of sense, honestly, scraping together old dragons sounds pretty accurate But this is just a theory because we can't find membrane in chests yet, hopefully as the lore develops more we'll be able to
The Ender Dragon we see is the last one, we have no idea if there were different species, which might explain the similar yet different design. Almost like Drake and Dragon, the End could have been swarming with many species, but they were all hunted to extinction, my theory is that they were hunted to create Elytras, the ships we see might have been for hunting them. It seems like the Ender Dragon has some connection to the overworld, some living "phantoms" could have been sent there, and after feasting on undead for so long they were changed to something else.
There is actually further evidence that supports this, as Mojang had once released information on a currently unreleased mob much similar to the End Dragons in the third dimension over, that being a red-colored overworld dragon. This could imply that the Old Builders had gained Elytra even before they ventured to the end and could also explain how the Pillagers found leftover elytra and phantom membranes from the remnants of their old kingdoms.

One thing that doesn’t convince me about this theory (and call me out if we had already figured it out) is that in the first ever Minecraft theory, and through out the journey of Minecraft Theory, MatPat said that the Ancient Builders were escaping from something and in a last ditch effort created the end portal, but when they when through it the portal closed behind them. So how did the Illagers see someone come through the portal and how did the Ancient Builders bring back elytras in order for the Illagers to see them?
I would like to note, that any Ender Dragon corpse that could have been found most likely would be missing it's head do to the fact that they mounted them to the front of the air ships.
The last little bit with the ender dragon screaming . . . was surprisingly spooky. And that alone sold the theory for me. The evidence was fitting, but it didn't become secured in my mind until that moment.

What if phantoms are actually the undead remnants of dragons that once existed in the overworld (but were killed to extinction by ancient civilizations)? It may explain the similarities to the ender dragon and their undead look.
They’re definitely hallucinations cos if one player didn’t sleep but another player did the player who slept won’t see the phantoms while the other player did
Although this theory does explain many aspects, it raised a question: “if the illagers made the phantoms from their invision of what they’ve heard about the ender dragon(s), that means someone went into the End, and came back out again” which as we know isn’t possible, considering there’s no portal to go through, once you’re in the End. Unless the dragon is killed. Which it isn’t.
They probably heard stories and maybe seen some imperfect or a bit inaccurate drawings and guessed the rest, which would make the theory more plausible. It would also explain how certain things are right while the others are off or missing. If illagers really do try to make things with wrong materials, I wouldn't put it past them to try making things without having all the information about what they're trying to recreate as well. There's also the option of there being a portal back that the other villagers/old civilization used to come back from the End, but destroyed it due to either illagers or something else.
I have to imagine there were active, accessible portals back then that could be passed through without killing the dragon. After all, they MADE the portals, we're just brute forcing our way through a system we know no other way to navigate

Well the builders were hunting for dragons so they probably can get out after killing one. I think that was the ancient builders' motivation in the first place why they kill end dragons to extinction was to get out of the end, since killing an ender dragon open up a portal back to the overworld. How does this explain the builders getting trapped? Majority of them probably cant fight or there wasnt enough dragons for them to kill which explains the ender dragons extinction.

I think it makes more sense for the ancient builders to go to the end and get stuck permanently. Not sure what his stance is.

One thing i noticed was you said the illagers would hear about the enderdragon and the builders would leave behind scraps of elytra’s but that doesn’t make sense when connected to the main theory we have going. It was theorized earlier that the ancient builders went to the end to flee from something, most likely the warden or wither, and were trapped in the End as a result. If they were trapped in the end, the illagers wouldn’t hear anything about what was going in in the end, and the ancient builders couldn’t bring back any elytra’s because the portal was closed on entry, which makes sense because you can’t find elytra’s in the overworld either otherwise if they did come back somehow you probably would find them in chest loot.
A bed, while looking simple and supposedly crafted with simple items, is actually a cloning device. As apart of the last builder's effort to maintain his species. Steve is a clone of the last builder. The last builder lived a long and fruitful scientific life, but Steve had forgotten that science after MANY iterations. It's why steve doesnt seem to remember where he is when he wakes up. He isnt some kind of crash survivor, he isn't ONLY just the last member of his species, he's a clone, and a clone which is slowly losing his touch with the science he once knew, and all the memories he had. A "bed" is actually a scientifically complicated cloning device.
Quick cool tip! To determine if a mob is undead or not, undead mobs arent effected by potion of harming. Living ones are. But if u throw regen on those undead mobs they take damage. Cool tip eh
@@setster007 To tame cat, you need 2 string which you have to kill spider and 3 stick and you have to wait for 5 minute while fishing to get fish then head to village and wait patience to give fish to stray cat who slowly walk toward you. That take lot of effort for noob like this despite look simple.
@@AceFaz i think enchantments are more like spells created by the master builders for specific tasks. Which is why there are some enchantments like loyalty and looting which have specific items for. This also explains why some enchantments (efficiency 2 or sharpness 5) requires higher experience points
@@chillyswiss7882 well, we know they use enchantments, since old abandoned fortresses have enchanted items and books. But wether or not they themselves made it, nobody knows. But say for example if you make everything yourself from the bare resources, and enchant, you could get fire aspect, without the ancient builders interacting with anything you just use. I think the enchants that exist, are just the only ones possible in that universe (until more are added in future updates). The thing is, with enchants, you can obtain them as a player on your own without the help of the ancient builders. Compare that to the things they made, the elytra, end portal frames, etc. Steve isn't able to make these at all, so it would be weird for him to be able to get enchants if they were made by the ancient builders. I think the enchants are something that everyone can access, including the ancient builders and steve, but no single person 'made' them for any purpose, they just exist.
Now, MatPat has a lot to work with the upcoming LORE-FILLED update 1.19: The Wild Update. There is the Disc 5 (odd numbered just like 11 and 13, like a Stranger Things reference); Deep Dark and Skulk items; The Warden; The Redstone Room underneath the deactivated Portal of the Ancient City; The Illageralt script, the third script in Minecraft after the enchanting language (first) and the End Crystal or Ender script (second); and Allays (the word allay means: diminish or put at rest).
I’ve noticed that sometimes when you look at a phantom above you, when it flies down towards you, it would then change its direction and fly back up higher.
Love the theories, but one question about this one. In a past theory, you claimed that once the ancient builders fled to the end but were stuck there, eventually being turned into the endermen we see today. But if they were stuck, how would stories of the ender dragon have reached the illagers?
I have watched every Minecraft theory (in this channel) and this is one of my favorites. Even though it was difficult to get all the evidence on point, everything makes absolute sense. I like it when you guys come up with logical behaviours that characters may have due to their past actions - like you did with the illagers. This video is flawless. Even the sponsor part was great!
When they were added, Phantoms spawned randomly in the End, in addition to spawning around players who haven't slept. That also seems like a connection to the Ender Dragon.
The attraction could also be proven by the April fool's update of this year, when you ride the ender dragon to the bottom of the end, you end up in the overworld...
My head cannon for phantoms is this. It's kinda a combination of, it's a hallucination, and it's a real monster. The way I like to see it is like this. They're real. They are real, however. They are attracted to sleep deprived individuals and can only be perceived by those prone to hallucinations. Like a sleep deprived person. That's kinda where I stand on that.

Personally I think the Eytra are simply repaired by phantom hide because they have similar wing membranes, and that the phantoms are from the mysterious dimension discovered by the builders that the warden is from
I also think it's worth noting (2 years too late) that the lack of legs, short tail, and flat torso can really show us more about why the dragons were hunted. The ancient builders were used to eating meat in the over world, they would have harvested meat from the dragons they killed as well as the wings. When eating lizards, most of the meat would be found in the legs, tail, and torso. The lack of neck could be from mounting the heads while the torn wings are from harvesting the membrane for elytra. As they are classified as 'undead' it makes sense for them to be made from what was left of the dragon's corpse
Their blue color is noteworthy, granting that your theory is true, maybe the Illagers used Lapis Lazuli in the creation of the phantoms? And their eyes are green like those of the villagers, maybe they were sacrificed in the experiment as well. Though in other theories you've said that the Master Builders escaped to the End but didn't realize it would be a one-way trip. They couldn't return to the Overworld and that's why they evolved into the Endermen. Endermen travel to the Overworld, and can teleport, so they must've figured something out eventually, but it doesn't seem like they would've been able to tell the Illagers anything about the End.

I actually thought of my own theory as to why the phantoms look so different from the ender dragon.
I believe that the reason why they’re smaller and look different is because the phantoms are the dead zombies of the male drone dragons. See, it’s important to note that the only ender dragon we ever see is a female, as shown by our prize once defeating the dragon: an egg. I believe that this species of dragon reproduced similarly to bees, where they would once in a while purposely produce males to send their genes to another female. Evidence of being able to control what gender an unborn baby will have is seen in real world crocodiles, where the temperature of the burrow incubating the eggs will determines if it’s a boy of girl, and I think the dragons can do the same. This would also explain their presence in the over world, as the males would be able to fit through the portals while the females are much too big. However, going between dimensions can cause a creature to zombify, like with piglins.
This would also coincide with your theory about how they sense the player, but also explain why they attack the player instead of normal mobs, because they were trying to defend their queen from the old builders.

Just wanted to say that, in the last snapshots, we can found piles of different shades of blue wool in the ancient cities, and these colors are kinda reminiscent of the warden, so I think your theory about the warden being built by men is getting more and more accurate ! (And also I just wanted to mention the giant fossiles that we can find everywhere in the soulsand valleys and very rarely in the overworld, and the size if these kinda matches the enderdragon's size...)

Phantoms originally spawned in The End in snapshots but they changed that because it made the end fight too hard. There is clearly a relation between the Phantom and The End, and them being the undead version of Ender Dragons is not too much of a stretch.
However I do feel that your illager interactions with the ancient builders creates a little too many loopholes within your own theory since you earlier said that the end portal was one-way so illagers should not know about what is in the end.

probably its before the wither attacked them/warden invasion, since those end portal exist even before those event. and after the event they cant get out because of the horror on the overworld making them "trapped" since they had to be in the end because they cant deal with the overworld, warden and wither.
My theory is that the portal closed in the same way the ender portal closes when a ghast shoots it, something like that

To add to this theory, Phantoms used to be able to spawn in the End as well, and were much bigger (and there size can still be increased with commands).
Question: how could the illagers have known about the end at all if the end portals are a one way trip? When the ancient builders went through they had no way to return. He said so himself, it’s how they went extinct. This is further supported by the lack of end items like the elytra (btw what’s with your pronunciation lol) or the purpur blocks. So what gives?

i have one theory of my own that might also work.
The phantoms are yes, the ghosts of the dragons, and meant to be the dragon, or what was left of it.
For an idea, the builders hunted the dragons, they would've torn off the wings, taken the tail for somn, taken meat and limbs from it, took the neck part for some things, an either parts of the head or the whole head.
The phantoms are just what the dragons ended up looking like after a hunt was done. It was possible that the builders would've taken parts like that back to the overworld as trophies or to use the tools of the overworld to further take apart the bodies. The illagers would've found what was left of these bodies and tried to make a dragon themselves from it, like you said, to try to bring the builders back, but this would've been an entirely new experiment, and one that wouldn't've gone to well. The dragon body would've tried to rebuild itself but missing so much would be unable to, the skin would come back differently shaded from trying to regrow, the dragons would've lacked muscle tissue leading to bones being visible, an all the missing limbs would be too far damaged to come back, and the mind, being broken and misshapen, would lead it to have a hunger for insomnia.
also, phantoms do stop attacking entirely 11:41, idk if it was just the server i was in but if you sleep for 6-10 seconds, they quit attacking. This could connect to the broken mind part.
The fact that elytras can be repaired with phantom membranes just tells me that the ancient civilization that travels to The End is probably sleep deprived

one thing that i think is just a minor thing that matpat says (and did say in previous episodes when talking about the wool portal) is that the ancient builders came FROM the end portals, which i dont think is the case.
We already have speculated that the strongholds were made to escape the wither or the rising tides that flooded the monuments. how then would the ancient builders come from this structure if they hadn't had any reason to build it yet. Not to mention that the portals are one-way anyway.
I think it is more likely that the ancient builders came from the end at world spawn, just like the player does if they don't have a bed to spawn in when they escape the end. then, as the illagers watched their gods escape from the overworld, not fully understanding how the portals function, attempt to recreate the portals as a means of opening a door for the ancients to come back through.
This also opens the door for more speculation. If you emerge from the end at world spawn, is the player a remnant of the ancient race that somehow managed to escape the end without having beat the dragon, or is there some way that when we left the end, the ancient race wasn't so ancient, and that somehow as we were traveling through the dimensions, our entire race would have gone extinct. this would explain how the player knows to go to the end in the first place, as so little in the world would actually provide us with that knowledge, as well as explaining why we would slay the ender dragon, as when we left the end, the ancient builders were still consistently hunting down the dragons.
How did the Illagers know about the what was housed in the End? (Namely the Ender Dragon). The End portal is one way, thus no survivors could return to tell the story of the Ender Dragon. This lack of a way back is the entire basis for the theory that the Ancient Builders turned into Endermen...
I thought the same thing. While it's an interesting theory, I don't think the Illagers could have been the ones to create Phantoms.
Well, we did get disc 5 where a player(builder?) (builderss he left as I heard hammering of construction) who's been close to withers, enderdragons, and then met the warden in the overworld back after they returned. Mojang may be changing the story (like the additions of phantoms and their part) to make it more connectable in a way?
As I stated in my other comment, the old builder COULD kill the dragon and make their way back to the overworld. They have elytra, and this means they had the ability to kill ender dragons. Why didn't they though

Hey MatPat! Love where everything is going with Minecraft lore and all the things with the Deep Dark, it’s amazing! One thing I would LOVE to see is a theory on the Ghast, and maybe the Blaze.
Anyway, my personal theory on the Ghast is that when about half the builders from all across the Overworld first entered the Nether, the pressure caused the portals to be unstable, and as soon as they entered, the portals leaked, cracked and eventually exploded, resulting in the ruined portals we see now. When they got trapped inside, they tried to make obsidian, but to no avail as the intense heat forbid the existence of water.
After a while, they became insane and started to kill eachother for sport. This broke out into a civil war, making the soul sand valleys we see today. Some used the primitive power of magic to combine the souls of their fallen to create the Ghast, a firebreathing abomination to destroy the others. Those who remained met the Piglins, whom they raided and stole obsidian from to get back out.
I know that’s a lot to dump, but tell me what ypu think!
Also, the Elytra looks extremely similar to the design of the Phantom. the boney look near what would be the bones, and the color.

My version of this theory is that the phantoms are the "butterfly" to the ender mite, see ender mite(larva) -> shulker(the cocoon) -> phantom. the phantom(using the corus fruit powers similar to ender mite/shulker) went through the void into the overworld

The Ender Dragon we see is the last one, we have no idea if there were different species, which might explain the similar yet different design. Almost like Drake and Dragon, the End could have been swarming with many species, but they were all hunted to extinction, my theory is that they were hunted to create Elytras, the ships we see might have been for hunting them. It seems like the Ender Dragon has some connection to the overworld, some living "phantoms" could have been sent there, and after feasting on undead for so long they were changed to something else.
There is actually further evidence that supports this, as Mojang had once released information on a currently unreleased mob much similar to the End Dragons in the third dimension over, that being a red-colored overworld dragon. This could imply that the Old Builders had gained Elytra even before they ventured to the end and could also explain how the Pillagers found leftover elytra and phantom membranes from the remnants of their old kingdoms.

One thing that doesn’t convince me about this theory (and call me out if we had already figured it out) is that in the first ever Minecraft theory, and through out the journey of Minecraft Theory, MatPat said that the Ancient Builders were escaping from something and in a last ditch effort created the end portal, but when they when through it the portal closed behind them.
So how did the Illagers see someone come through the portal and how did the Ancient Builders bring back elytras in order for the Illagers to see them?
I would like to note, that any Ender Dragon corpse that could have been found most likely would be missing it's head do to the fact that they mounted them to the front of the air ships.

Although this theory does explain many aspects, it raised a question: “if the illagers made the phantoms from their invision of what they’ve heard about the ender dragon(s), that means someone went into the End, and came back out again” which as we know isn’t possible, considering there’s no portal to go through, once you’re in the End. Unless the dragon is killed. Which it isn’t.
They probably heard stories and maybe seen some imperfect or a bit inaccurate drawings and guessed the rest, which would make the theory more plausible. It would also explain how certain things are right while the others are off or missing. If illagers really do try to make things with wrong materials, I wouldn't put it past them to try making things without having all the information about what they're trying to recreate as well. There's also the option of there being a portal back that the other villagers/old civilization used to come back from the End, but destroyed it due to either illagers or something else.

The only thing I find a flaw with is the illagers knowing about the ender dragon. Didn't matpat say that the ancient builders were stuck in the end? If so, how would any news of the ender dragons reach the illagers, if there isn't anyone who can tell them about it?

Well the builders were hunting for dragons so they probably can get out after killing one.
I think that was the ancient builders' motivation in the first place why they kill end dragons to extinction was to get out of the end, since killing an ender dragon open up a portal back to the overworld.
How does this explain the builders getting trapped?
Majority of them probably cant fight or there wasnt enough dragons for them to kill which explains the ender dragons extinction.

I think it makes more sense for the ancient builders to go to the end and get stuck permanently. Not sure what his stance is.

Welcome to another episode of MatPat single-handedly building/solving the whole of Minecraft’s lore
One thing i noticed was you said the illagers would hear about the enderdragon and the builders would leave behind scraps of elytra’s but that doesn’t make sense when connected to the main theory we have going. It was theorized earlier that the ancient builders went to the end to flee from something, most likely the warden or wither, and were trapped in the End as a result. If they were trapped in the end, the illagers wouldn’t hear anything about what was going in in the end, and the ancient builders couldn’t bring back any elytra’s because the portal was closed on entry, which makes sense because you can’t find elytra’s in the overworld either otherwise if they did come back somehow you probably would find them in chest loot.
I can’t wait for the theory on the ancient cities! They are FULL of lore

A bed, while looking simple and supposedly crafted with simple items, is actually a cloning device. As apart of the last builder's effort to maintain his species. Steve is a clone of the last builder. The last builder lived a long and fruitful scientific life, but Steve had forgotten that science after MANY iterations. It's why steve doesnt seem to remember where he is when he wakes up. He isnt some kind of crash survivor, he isn't ONLY just the last member of his species, he's a clone, and a clone which is slowly losing his touch with the science he once knew, and all the memories he had.
A "bed" is actually a scientifically complicated cloning device.

@@setster007 To tame cat, you need 2 string which you have to kill spider and 3 stick and you have to wait for 5 minute while fishing to get fish then head to village and wait patience to give fish to stray cat who slowly walk toward you. That take lot of effort for noob like this despite look simple.

Players who have mending books: well yes but actually no.
The way mending repairs is physically reforming the item using experience, not exactly specific for a item like the elytra though

@@AceFaz i think enchantments are more like spells created by the master builders for specific tasks. Which is why there are some enchantments like loyalty and looting which have specific items for. This also explains why some enchantments (efficiency 2 or sharpness 5) requires higher experience points
@@chillyswiss7882 well, we know they use enchantments, since old abandoned fortresses have enchanted items and books. But wether or not they themselves made it, nobody knows. But say for example if you make everything yourself from the bare resources, and enchant, you could get fire aspect, without the ancient builders interacting with anything you just use. I think the enchants that exist, are just the only ones possible in that universe (until more are added in future updates).
The thing is, with enchants, you can obtain them as a player on your own without the help of the ancient builders. Compare that to the things they made, the elytra, end portal frames, etc. Steve isn't able to make these at all, so it would be weird for him to be able to get enchants if they were made by the ancient builders. I think the enchants are something that everyone can access, including the ancient builders and steve, but no single person 'made' them for any purpose, they just exist.

I’ve noticed that sometimes when you look at a phantom above you, when it flies down towards you, it would then change its direction and fly back up higher.
Love the theories, but one question about this one. In a past theory, you claimed that once the ancient builders fled to the end but were stuck there, eventually being turned into the endermen we see today. But if they were stuck, how would stories of the ender dragon have reached the illagers?
Maybe they didn’t get stuck immediately, but something happened while they were building and hunting in the End?

I have watched every Minecraft theory (in this channel) and this is one of my favorites. Even though it was difficult to get all the evidence on point, everything makes absolute sense. I like it when you guys come up with logical behaviours that characters may have due to their past actions - like you did with the illagers. This video is flawless. Even the sponsor part was great!

When they were added, Phantoms spawned randomly in the End, in addition to spawning around players who haven't slept. That also seems like a connection to the Ender Dragon.
The attraction could also be proven by the April fool's update of this year, when you ride the ender dragon to the bottom of the end, you end up in the overworld...

My head cannon for phantoms is this.
It's kinda a combination of, it's a hallucination, and it's a real monster.
The way I like to see it is like this.
They're real. They are real, however. They are attracted to sleep deprived individuals and can only be perceived by those prone to hallucinations. Like a sleep deprived person. That's kinda where I stand on that.

Personally I think the Eytra are simply repaired by phantom hide because they have similar wing membranes, and that the phantoms are from the mysterious dimension discovered by the builders that the warden is from

I also think it's worth noting (2 years too late) that the lack of legs, short tail, and flat torso can really show us more about why the dragons were hunted. The ancient builders were used to eating meat in the over world, they would have harvested meat from the dragons they killed as well as the wings. When eating lizards, most of the meat would be found in the legs, tail, and torso. The lack of neck could be from mounting the heads while the torn wings are from harvesting the membrane for elytra. As they are classified as 'undead' it makes sense for them to be made from what was left of the dragon's corpse

Their blue color is noteworthy, granting that your theory is true, maybe the Illagers used Lapis Lazuli in the creation of the phantoms? And their eyes are green like those of the villagers, maybe they were sacrificed in the experiment as well.
Though in other theories you've said that the Master Builders escaped to the End but didn't realize it would be a one-way trip. They couldn't return to the Overworld and that's why they evolved into the Endermen. Endermen travel to the Overworld, and can teleport, so they must've figured something out eventually, but it doesn't seem like they would've been able to tell the Illagers anything about the End.
