Polstar all the way. Had mine delivered yesterday first impressions (after driving Jags for the last 35 years) WOW! Thank you for helping me make my choice over many excellent videos
Did you receive a 16 amp or 32 amp cable? The cable rating not the plug rating. Lots of owner feedback to Polestar that the bundled 3 phase 16amp cable is a disappointing inclusion so I’m wondering if they have addressed this?
The noise and phantombraking, even when the road is completely empty, are among the reasons why i returned the Tesla Model 3 for exactly 2 years now. I am glad i drive a Polestar 2 PP now. :-) I do agree on all the good points on the Polestar. :-) :-)
Great, honest video. I like it. I agreed with you on everything. I waited for the Model Y because of the ride height and rear hatch instead of purchasing the Model 3 in 2019. There are some 'small' items that Tesla offers that most people overlook until they need to use them. I never thought about the forward and backward summon feature when I purchased my car, but now I will always look for that in any future vehicles. I use it to roll the car a short distance within my garage in order to walk to some of my shelves, and it has proven useful when parked too close to a charger and I want to unload my car (Teslas back into chargers) but find that I need more room to remove larger items (I can unplug, move the car, unload, move the car back, and plug in without getting back into the car) I have a dog. And his coat is very thick. He needs the 'dog mode'. I also use this mode for keeping ice cream from melting too quickly during a hot day if I'm out shopping and need to enter another store after having already picked up some frozen items. Granted, Polestar and everyone else will likely implement this functionality in future software updates. Sentry and dashcam mode is invaluable for insurance claims or to simply record suspicious happenings. My car has already captured a parking lot fender bender that did not involve my own car, a vehicle dropping it's fuel tank and catching fire right in front of me on the highway, reckless and aggressive human pilots, a person who passed a school bus with lights flashing (it was a pleasure reporting that a-hole with a video of the very intentional maneuver), and a very heated exchange between a couple in a parking lot which looked like it might have become physical off camera....but I saw nothing in the police logs to confirm it. Third party app functionality is an absolute game changer for a traveler like me. The Tesla API allows third parties to develop software to further automate your day to day routines. I have mentioned TeslaFi in prior comments. I really think that Tesla may purchase them in the future. I can use the TeslaFi service to setup automated charging, pre-conditioning, and reminders that are conditioned upon my location and charger connections. Here's an example: I frequent a hotel in Boston that has free charging, but they impose idle fees if connected but not charging. I can set up routines that monitor my state of charge while at that location and then the program will stop the car charging for a set period of time before starting again to avoid the fees. I am the only one using the chargers overnight, because I have a method to avoid the idle fees. Every other EV owner wakes up early on a cold winter's day to move their car back to the chargers so that they can precondition before going to work. I had previously tried to set the charge speed in the car to a lower amperage, but sometimes it was so cold at night that the vehicle ended up using most of the charge to keep the battery conditioned and very little range was gained by morning. The TeslaFi service also automatically logs all charging, costs, drives, energy use.....you name it. And then it automatically labels my drives for work based on the locations of the start or end point which makes it very easy to submit for my mileage costs at the end of the month, and the bosses do not question it anymore.....because I send them the data if they give me any argument. I have purchased the FSD. Currently it is only somewhat more useful than just autopilot. I expect that this is the year that it is all going to change in North America. I have already experienced several 200 mile commutes, during which, I had to drive for about 1000 meters to make turns at intersections or pass a left turning car on the berm, or go around a garbage truck, or avoid an object on the road. When FSD is finally released (and even if it must still be monitored), you will want it. It will be safer than you, because it is looking at everything all the time and reacting faster. The main point is that every Tesla comes with this capability built into it from the beginning. It is only a software purchase away. I like your videos. You're an honest reviewer. I'm glad that the Polestar is the car for you. Anything without an engine is a winner in my book. But I'm a 'function' based purchaser. I am willing to pay more for more useful functionality than anything else. One day, during this decade, I will be chauffeured to work by my Model Y and then I will send it back home. Or I will send a CyberTruck to a relative who needs to borrow it for a day and then summon it back to me (where ever I may be) when they are finished. Imagine if your car/truck can be sent to pickup things from stores or suppliers while you continue to do yard work or just want to spend time watching TH-cam videos?
Excellent well balanced comparison. As a Polestar driver myself I totally agree with the pluses and minuses highlighted and the choice between these 2 great cars is down to what ticks the boxes for you personally.
Great comparison mate - I have followed your posts for a few months now. While I initially ordered a P2 in Feb, I then cancelled it (worries over range and lack of an interior colour I like) and switched to the M3LR (collected yesterday and love it). I tested both and basically they are both excellent, but very different cars. Polestar definitely looks better externally to me, but the interiors are very different. I love the open space of the M3 (especially in white faux leather) and the huge single screen, but felt very claustrophobic in the P2, however, would love the digital dash of the P2 (in my S5 it was awesome and I think I’m going to miss it). The new China made M3s are much better made from what I’ve seen, mine is perfectly aligned and painted (except for a small paint chip on the boot lip (no PDI with Tesla so it’s find your own faults and report them via the app which I think is very poor for a £50k car))). Think with these 2 cars it’s definitely a case of ETTO and as long as owners are happy with their choice then it’s a win-win. Tbh I’d be really surprised if in a few years, once it’s got better range and a decent app, I bought a P2 to replace the Tesla.
Good comparison. My friend picked up his PS2 at the beginning of the month and he absolutely loves it. He has come from BMWs, Mercs and Volvo's and is amazed at how good it is. I will say however, that I showed him my 3 week old M3LR and he was blown away by everything it had and could do. I think for some the M3 is too much of a departure from the norm, as you said the familiarity with legacy cars will probably be what a lot of people look for. These were the 2 cars I struggled to choose between, they are both great cars, so take them both for a test drive and see what suits you.
Yes that is very true! The Polestar is a much more 'standard' car when coming from other good brands. I do really like the ultra modern style that the Tesla offers as it is bold and very different
@@ShortCircuitPS2 I think the biggest shock for most people is just how good it is to drive an electric car. It doesn't matter which EV you get, you will be amazed, I mean I got hooked by a leaf (my gateway drug into EV ownership).
@@iowgtr Mine was the Chevy Volt. GM really dropped the ball on the Volt.... If they would have given it 150 mile battery range and a 3 gallon gas tank, they would have sold tens of millions of them. It's a great car from a short sighted legacy manufacturer who is just now discovering their errors.
Hi Bradley, I fully agree with the conclusions. A good driving experience. An additional argument for me to choose the Polestar is the ability to tow a caravan of up to 1500 kg. Last week I drove 200 km with this combination. It went fine, stable, also charging on the go. Consumption was on average 41 kWh / 100 km.
I won't lie, I never really cared for a lot of what separates the Model 3 and Polestar 2. From an 'objective' and 'utilitarian' pov I never really saw why you'd buy a Polestar 2 over a Tesla Model 3. But to me, there is something fundamentally and intensely attractive about the Polestar 2 I can't really reasonably explain. Like discovering some sort of food you just love to bits, or you find it disgusting, sometimes what helps drive decisions is not going to be obviously logical. At the end of the day, I'm waiting for a Polestar 2 now. While it doesn't have many of the features I loved in other cars, I just kept coming back to it over and over when considering my options.
Watching this now in 2023. Polestar has a good price campaign here in Norway. The new 2024 models has improved range almost to the same level as Tesla model 3. I'm tempted to trade my Model 3 for one of these.
Interesting video. Polestar will be on my shortlist next time - I currently have a Tesla Model 3 LR. Obviously it depends on what you’re used to but I think the Tesla hi-fi is average at best and it doesn’t help that you have to increase the volume to drown out the road noise. The recent update ruined the screen display; it now dedicates almost half the screen to a pointless visualisation of the car.
Great video series, thanks so much for making it. I've had a model 3 for about 4 years now, and am thinking about the Polestar as my next car. This was super enlightening, and I'm now tempted to go rent a P2 and make a sort of opposite viewpoint version of your vid. :)
After having driven both vehicles, too, I find this a perfectly fair and accurate comparison. Both M3 and P2 are excellent cars. It’s just a matter of preferences. Either way, so much better than a traditional combustion car.
Best comparison I've seen. So balanced. Both great cars, suitable for different needs. I wouldn't swap my polestar for anything, but I wouldn't recommend it for everyone either. Best feature for me is just how effortlessly stable the car is. Feels almost impossible ble to derail. Keep up the great videos.
Honestly can you tell me a reason to buy the Polestar over the Tesla? I see no other reason, then perhaps preferring the style. It is more expensive, slower, less range, the software is far inferior, and their charging stations are non existent compared to Tesla superchargers.
@@dtho6231 it's interesting and I still believe they are both great. Not sure where you are, but here in the UK the PS2 was the same price as the M3 long range when I bought. The difference in speed is also tiny and not something that bothers me at all. Yes the performance is much quicker but in the uk is many thousands more. It certainly has less range than the Tesla, but I've owned the car nearly 7 months and have only had to charge it at home so range for me again is not an issue. Could well be for others. I did find the P2 both much quieter and a little more comfortable, but I'm older with a bad back, and not tall, so again it won't be for everyone. I prefer the boot/trunk opening on the P2 as it is easier for me to get things in and out. The software is also interesting. I think the teslas is amazing but overly complex for me. I found the P2 software very stable, very simple and intuitive and as it uses Google, will also improve. I also like having a really clear drivers display. As I said, I'm in no way saying it's better than the M3, but I honestly believe it suits me more.
@@dtho6231 let’s analyse and see why he (and also I) consider the Polestar a better car more expensive : it’s because Tesla just decreased all their prices by up to 20% in 2023 because of quarter results being much lower than expected due to competition. a few month ago if was the opposite. at the same time Polestar did an update and increased their price. So now P2 is 5K more expensive pound for pound. Nevertheless it’s a small difference. we can say they are almost at the same price. slower : TM3 LRDM is given for 4.4s and P2 equivalent 4.5s. Yes performance is given for 3.3s but you can add 0.3s on all Tesla acceleration figures because it’s a rollout measurement that nobody is using, so you can consider it a real 3.6s vs 4.2s but honestly who needs it? if you car is sub 5s for 0-60s you really don’t need more believe me. less range : this is absolutely not true anymore with P2 2023 update. P2 highest range is 592km while T3LRDM is 533km. software inferior : this is not true, the P2 Android Automotive is widely recognised as the best in the automotive industry. It is much more ergonomic, offers lots of features and is very fast. sure there is no fart app and other stuff like this but who needs it. charging station : not relevant anymore, as all the charging station are getting opened to non-Tesla car little by little every where in the world. But most of all i consider P2 better because : storage and practicality (hatch vs normal trunk) instrument cluster (for me this is crucial) noise level and overall confort (crucial as well) sound system is better (crucial) build quality (crucial) headlights quality (crucial for security) ride quality (crucial) accelerator pedal well dosed and not on/off (crucial) Why I don’t like TM3: no instrument cluster software not user friendly and difficult to read with very small font size that are not oriented towards driver accelerator pedal is a disaster
Thank you for this ,an honest realistic video ,you have helped to make my mind up the things like build quality etc matter to me I no longer do long road trips more than once a year most rips are 30-60 miles so for me it’s the Polestar I will just have get used to the colour choices
Had a direct comparison between the model 3 and my polestar with a colleague of mine a couple of weeks ago. When we sat in his M3 he banged on the floor behind the front seats. It sounded like an empty can! No such sound in the polestar. Also, the ability to use a knob to adjust wiper interval, the ability to just open the glove box instead of having to go through a menu, better voice recognition... driver centric design, all deal breakers for me. I'll never choose a Tesla as long as I still have to drive it myself.
Regarding storage, I guess the brand positioning of Polestar being more about a designer car, a sports car, for instance Volvo cares more for those details, I believe is part of the car indentity
A very good comparison but I would like to correct one thing. Fixing most panel gaps is actually very easy. Any mechanic can do it. Doors, tail gate, the bonnet, etc. are designed so they can be aligned as necessary. It just seems that Tesla does a mediocre job from the factory. Would love to see you compare a 2021 Model 3 later in the year to see whether / how much it changed.
It's a fair point, as my China built model 3 is absolutely flawless. It seems the stuff coming out of China is more consistent with regards to fit and finish. The issue with Tesla these days is the fit and finish was always so bad that now people don't even consider the cars (they just dismiss them straight away), when the reality now seems a lot different from recent years. I would be interested to see the split between people who prefer the PS2 over the M3 and vice versa. Things like age, job type, usage (business or family car). I have my thoughts, but it would be interesting to see the actual data.
Great video - thanks. Likes and dislikes aside, neither car gives you everything. It boils down to which features you ‘like’ the most, you ‘value’ the most and which will you ‘use’ the most. The last answer will be telling. If you like and value a feature but will rarely use it, that’s not something to guide your decision. I travel 600 mile plus round trips regularly (when not in lockdown) - but I need practicality and comfort. So for me it is the P2 - which arrives tomorrow!
The one thing I’d change in my Tesla Model 3 is the sound proofing. It’s much louder than my previous BMW 320D. Most is the tyre noise. Not sure how to reduce it though.
The road roar is probably transmitted via a combination of direct vibration through the suspension mounts and noise coming through the wheel arches. I am planning to put some of this heavy duty vibration damping stuff on the inside of the wheel arches to dampen all that down, as soon as i can travel to a place that sells it (not available in Norway where i live): standartplast.com/catalog/diamond-line/stp-bomb-aero/
That should be easy. Just buy dynamat or equivalent and install it all around the car. It will make a world of difference. This is probably the first thing anyonw with an EV should do.
Further to my comment, its nice seeing the area you drive on the M25....I live not so far from the Godstone/ Caterham turnoff, but stuck here in Norway for almost a year where I spend a lot of my time. Sad not being able to fly back to Gatwick 😪 (travel restrictions)....Keep up the exellent reviews.👍
Thanks for a great comparison! One of the best I`ve seen. I do have a Model 3 Performance 2021 myself, but I could have bought the Polestar 2 as well. Both are great cars, the two finest EV`s on the market today in my opinion 🙂
Thanks for the comparison, especially regarding road noise and handling. I like you presenting pros and cons of each car, so we can judge which might be suitable for our tastes.
Fantastic comparison, thank you, especially about cabin noise and sound systems. I rule out some cars right away depending on the quality of the sound system. You helped me rule out the Model 3, but still considering the new Model S, vs Audi etron GT and Porsche Taycan 4S. Polestar still has only a rudimentary dealer network in the US atm, none near me, so they aren't a serious player yet.
I enjoyed this and your other videos, in part because you talk about things that are important in choosing a car but are often overlooked in mainstream TH-cam car reviews. I have a reservation for a Volvo C40 but will be test-driving a P2 in a few days, though my expectation is that I will stick with the C40, which I think is a fabulous car. I'm curious if you considered the C40 or XC40 Recharge before you settled on the P2, and if so why you went with the P2. Though it would not affect me, the sparsity of Polestar service centres (currently just four in Canada, where I live) should be a consideration for some potential buyers. I understand some problems can be dealt with at Volvo dealers but apparently not all.
Nice video, Polestar seems to hit a lot of very important marks. Dual screen, quiet, and a hatch is a must for me. Just try to transport a 55 inch tv in a Model 3 :)
I'm a hatchback guy as well. i don't understand why they aren't more popular. If I am paying through the nose for a car I just can't settle for a regular trunk(boot).
@@georgeidarraga4006 Absolutely! You will realize how important having a hatch is real fast, even if the trunk volume is the same or greater you can't fit the same size items. Even in my old Model X 2nd row seats did not fold and I could not transport anything larger.
Pretty much spot on - I have a P2 PP and agree with all your points. I don’t think the difference in sound levels came across in the video, but I can say that the P2 is the quietest car I have ever driven (beating even our super quiet XC90 plug-in hybrid). Completely agree on the accelerator “muting” being really good - I also have had a BMW i3 and one of my main complaints is that I had to put it in ECO mode to stop it leaping off the line with the slightest touch of the pedal. Final point...I am also completely frustrated with the steering input requirement to get it to stay in lane following mode - the XC90 with the same system needs nowhere near the same input to keep it engaged.
Very good review. Polestar wins hands down for looks and build quality. You only need to look at how many videos are dedicated to checking a newTesla compared with a P2! The a aerodynamics helps efficiency as you said. Road noise is clearly better in the P2. If only you could hybridise the two
The new Tesla Model S is the hybrid of the Polestar 2 and Model 3. It's a hatchback, has a quality interior, driver display, is efficient with longer range, has great performance and an excellent public charging. Just a shame it costs from £84k 🤣 It will be interesting to see if Tesla ever trickle some of the new S features down to the 3 and Y models - e.g. driver display etc..
@@SDK2006b totally agree. I would love the dual screen but Tesla want to be radical for future self driving etc. The Y has the hatchback but will be considerably more expensive.
Excellent review yet again and glad you've had a chance to compare as I've only managed to get a test in the T3 but ordered the Polestar on the basis of your videos and you've now ticked off all my queries. Finally, today got a delivery date for next month and really looking forward to catching up with you on the A23 lol 👍
@@AzizIzgin 8000 miles in and going well, albeit with the odd app glitch now and again. Recently completed holidays to Cornwall and Norfolk with no problem on range and plenty of charging points, despite some being broken. Real head turner and conversation starter and I've still yet to see more than ten on the road in total, whereas Teslas ten a penny. Scary but useful acceleration from any point on the dial, plenty of passenger and luggage room. So far so good
@@neilsaye1 did you get the long range? Wondering what they mean with heat pump? Don’t all cars heat the interior of the car? I really thought I was going for the tm3 but since all talk so good about ps2 I am now curious (now owning a 2013 Volvo v70) Can you tell me the real if you want to stay under 80% battery charge? I heard that the range got better after the update. In the end , what is important for me is comfort, range and sound. How is the mandatory service on the ps2? Tesla doesn’t have anything mandatory just that they recommend you to check breaks every 2 years other small stuff. Can you tell me something about that? Thanks for info 🙏🏻
@@AzizIzgin no, dual motor, although I might consider the long range next time if the performance is worthwhile and not too compromised. Haven't had a service yet, I think that's still a way off, but they let you know if they see any issues when you enable the predictive maintenance function. Don't know about heat pump. 80% charge is ok unless you do long trips, when that extra 50 miles makes a lot of difference, so I set mine to 100% as much as possible
I really wish tesla would hurry up with the model y launch in the UK. Lease prices for the polestar dual motor vs the model 3 dual motor are all significantly higher when you add the pilot and plus packages to get the glass roof and auto pilot.
My e-golf deals with motorway traffic fantastic. It seems to recognise if the car that's cutting in front of you is going the same speed or faster. If it's going similar speeds it will ease off the power a little bit. If the car is moving away from. You it doesn't do anything other than show the car on the driver display so you know its seen the car in front. The adaptive is excellent
Great video !! 👍🏼⚡ For me, the only reason I would buy a current Tesla is if I was doing significant daily range and needed the better efficiency and the world class public charging network. The range of the Polestar (~200 miles on 20" wheels) is enough for me and i'm happy to lose some efficiency & range, for the improved quality, driver display and better looks of the Polestar 2.
Both are superb EV’s. I love everything Tesla does, but I’d still take the PS2. It’s so beautifully put together. I just need to find that £45k I lost down the back of the sofa.
Thanks for this video. My Mercedes 350e is at the end of its lease and it's time to order my next car. I'd already reduced my options to the Polestar and Tesla and your video has helped me decide. I've ordered a Tesla Long Range in multi-coat red. I am concerned about road noise but you were comparing both cars at 70 mph on a motorway and I'm hoping the the noise won't be so bad on A and B roads which I'm mostly on. The attraction is the super-charger network. You pulled into a McD's for a bite to eat and were thrilled to find TWO chargers for your Polestar. From what I've seen so far, when you arrive at a Tesla charging area, there are often 6, 8 or 10 chargers waiting for you. Still, the Polestar is a much better looking car and I'm sure it'll do very well as a true competitor to Tesla.
since your post 7 months ago, how do you like your Tesla. how was the build quality and road noise? I'm going through the decision between the P2 and TM3
@@TripleZme The Tesla has exceeded my expectations. It's not perfect, but the imperfections are minor...let me explain. Firstly, build quality - my 2021 Tesla was made in China and the build quality is brilliant. Panel gaps are even and the paint quality is great. Secondly, driveabilty (is that a real word?) - I've just done an 800 mile round trip from Blackpool to the Isle of Skye with no issues whatsoever. Superchargers all the way. The longest stop I had was something like 20 minutes, shorter than the time it took me to get a coffee and have a comfort break. Yes, you get road noise from the tyres, a bit like the sound you get when you drive a car that's fitted with run-flat tyres but I don't find it obtrusive (but then I always have music on). What would I change?...I wish the seat belt adjusters would go a little lower as the seat belt sits a little high across my chest in my preferred seating position. I would like the door mirrors to be heated so that the demist in the morning. And I feel that the windscreen wipers, when in "auto" aren't reactive enough. As I said, pretty minor stuff. The Polestar is a nice car (if you can get one) but I'd still go for the Tesla for one main reason - the Supercharger network. It's worth it for that alone. I hope that helps :)
Just needs a post-factory fix to preheat the battery to give better range for cold starts or short journeys, also allows braking regen to operate sooner, plus gives quicker charging. Strange a 'Nordic' firm never included this. Perhaps a bolt-on heater to the battery 'coolant' system, maybe somewhere under the bonnet, with an on-board software change, which could be linked to the cabin preheating scheduling ? Need to assess the cost benefit.
The one biggest diff between these cars from all the comparison videos it the noise in Model 3 is extremlly loud...But polestar 2 is super quite...Sheeeeeeh...I thought they used different mic in these cars tbh
Thanks for your comprehensive videos - much appreciated. Will hopefully go EV soon - still not sure which one but as an ex Volvo driver I hanker for the Polestar. 👍
great video as always ! one thing though about the pilot assist / autopilot: the P2 is all about safety (after all their parents are Volvo !). i think that displaying what the car see is just a distraction and while driving your eyes should always be on the road. the "apply steering" is definitely more aggressive on the P2, even more than a Volvo (i also have a 2019 XC90). the P2 requires you to touch and keep your hand for 2 seconds on the steering wheel to "feel" that you are actually focused/paying attention to the road. again, all it's about safety. tesla cars, in my opinion, are just gadget with wheels... :) thank you bradley once again for your amazing job !
I really like the Polestar2, however watching your videos you mention its quiter in the polestar but it sounds through the video like the polestar is louder in the lower range and the tesla in higher pitches, could just be me... Both considerably quiter than an ICE though 🤔 how did you find the driver seats in both? Great video😇
It really is lots quieter...but I agree, it didn’t really come across in the video. Seats better in Polestar - they’re from Volvo and they make the best out there. What you won’t like it that there isn’t enough steering reach adjustment in the Polestar - I have to slightly compromise my usual driving position to be comfortable with the wheel.
Do you have the standard range or long range on your Polestar? Is it worth to buy standard range in Polestar since I dont drive long distances, what do you think? Is it entirely on one's need?
It was the hatch and the dual display that won it for me when choosing the Polestar. It is very close though and in terms of range and charging network the Tesla wins hands down. If the model Y was available in the UK last July then I would have seriously considered that, I would have thought a hatch would be a bigger seller anyway, just more practical.
Same. I likely would have got the Y for practicality if it was available but I got the Polestar 2 instead Quite glad now, the Y isn't that efficient either.
Great video! I was contemplating selling my Kona here in Norway and go for either the Polestar2 or the Tesla Model 3LR, but things have come to a halt as my Kona will soon be going in for a HV battery replacement, together with some other 80,000 vehicles (fire risk)! That being the most costly EV recall ever! The off putting thing about the Polestar was that there was no app around the beginning of the year, is there one now? That also being the reason to change the Kona as our 2019 model can't have one. The 2020 model which is now built in the Czech Republic rather than Korea has the app. Good luck with your Polestar. There's quite a few here now in Norway and they look a classy EV!
Thanks for watching! I'm hoping to try out the Kona at some point. The Polestar still doesn't have an app, seems it's been delay which is a shame. The main thing I'd really like is to be able to tell the car to heat up from the app and to check battery SOC!
@@ShortCircuitPS2 Thanks for your quick reply :) The Kona is a great car with a fantastic range, but an app where we live is important in mid winter with -25c. It's not so bad with an attached garage or if you work at regular times. Then you can pre-program the car on a weekly/monthly basis. My partner and I were getting fed-up getting dressed/undressed to walk through half a metre of snow to the garage several times a day to set the timer! Our Kona is a 2019 model and built in Korea, (without an app). It's only the 2020 models that are now made in the Czech Republic that have an app. Strangely enough the 2018/19 Korean models that were exported to the States have the app. Something to do with the sim card?.... We also have the new Mazda MX30.....but then that's something else! I made two videos on it. This Channel ("Y**T**e) won't allow me to mention their name nor the link, so search for "Mazda MX30 Cold Battery issues". Then another video with the March Update. Not as good videos as yours, but I tried to get my point across. Just subscribed to your channel 👍 Kind regards Bob
I still think some people also go for the P2 to be different from the herd and like the exclusivity and relative rarity. You have stated the pros and cons of both to enable a person to make a choice.
Polestar 2 would have been lot more competitive if it was priced 5k lower. It is just too expensive right now to be Tesla M3 competition, specially when you consider options like LED light, Glass sunroof etc.. cost extra where on Tesla M3, it comes standard even for base model.
A question on the useable battery size : You mentioned it is 72 kWh - is this still the case? [I've search on Google and some sites suggest it's 75 kWh].🤔
No more government EV grant makes it a much more difficult choice. Now it feels like you could get the M3 performance for a similar monthly cost to the P2.
@@trevorsadowski4572 If it were just a choice between the M3-LR and the P2, the Polestar wins every time. But now I'm genuinely considering the M3 Performance. From a leasing perspective there isn't really much difference between the two cars any more.
@@MrGamingCookie - Personally, If I was looking to buy a TM3 then I would get LR with the upgraded wheels and the software unlock performance boost. Works out about £53k vs £60k for the Performance. That's an extra £7k for lower suspension, upgraded brakes and a rear carbon spoiler.
Another great video, but an opportunity missed. There will be some of your viewers out there, may be from northern climates, that may want to know other differences between the two cars. The Polestar 2 being full-time AWD and the Model 3 which is RWD with all wheel traction control. Very different. May be reviews of electric cars will evolve to comparing against ICE cars, like the Polestar 2 against the Audi RS4 and the Tesla Model 3 against the BMW M3! Interesting to see how they go.
Appreciate the honest unbiased video, have already ordered a P2 and this confirms all the reasons why I went with a car manufacturer who produces an EV vs a software startup who decides to programme pigs, fly to Mars and drain German marshland in the pursuit of profit!
I think you got most things right. But you never talked about efficiency, only range. The Polestar is very inefficient, about 3.1 miles per kWh. The old Model 3 LR is closer to 3.6. The new Model 3 SR+ has the same range as the Polestar 2 with a 60kWh battery. I test drove the Polestar and there’s a couple of other nitpicks - rear visibility is poor and getting in the rear seat was a struggle for me with leg room behind the driver’s seat. I’ve yet to test the Model 3 and it might not be any better. One other thing the Polestar can do is 1500kg rated towing capacity. Unfortunately you can’t buy the towing package factory fitted in Australia.
I agree with you that the Polestar is the nicer car and having a hatchback is just way more practical- but that efficiency and range from a £50k car is poor- the Polestar isn't the only culprit here. If range anxiety and, more to the point, chargepoint availability anxiety weren't issues I'd go with the Polestar but they are so it would be the Tesla Model 3 for me.
Agreed - the public charging infrastructure is improving rapidly, but it is still hopelessly woeful in some parts of the country (Dorset, for example). Electric Highway has a LOT to answer for...they should be booted out of the motorway service stations as soon as possible. I have a P2 PP and the efficiency/range have improved a lot with the latest software update. No electric car is going to get you more than 250 miles in the real world other than a model S, but the question is - do you need it? As Bradley said - it depends on your individual needs - the vast majority of people only do a small number of very long distance drives per year (which includes me).
@@AzizIzgin That is not a simple question to answer as it depends on a lot of things. The biggest impact is temperature - this impacts all EVs. In the winter with a temperature of around 5C-10C then the range is between 180-200 miles for longer journeys - lots of shorter journeys will be much less as the car spends some of its energy warming the battery up in the first few miles. In the current weather of 20-30C then the range for long journeys is 210-220 miles. All these numbers are for the performance variant which has larger tyres and that impacts the range. Expect around 10 miles more for the regular car. In addition speed makes a big difference - I generally cruise at 70mph - 80mph depending on speed limits. Drop the speed to 60-65mph and you will see another 10-30 miles depending on conditions (power lost to drag is a cube relationship to velocity). In general I have found that my range between "need to take a break" is less the range of the car. Overall I like the car - I don't find the range to be a compromise. I will add one large caveat. EVs work well if you have a home charger - you arrive home, plug in, and you leave with a full charge every time. No home charger = lots of pain at public chargers. I do not recommend one to anyone without driveway charging.
@@nixer65 thanks for such a detailed answer. When you write all between 180-220miles, do you count from 100-0% battery or from 80-20% battery? Cause no matter what I’d want to know the real life scenario if I’d try to stick with the charging recommendations:)
IMO, noise is a non issue, I find it very quiet but ride is another matter. The 3 needs better compliance in the shocks and the springs are too stiff. The good part is it's only an issue on rough roads. Single screen does the job of keeping me informed and the best I've ever experienced! If Polestar had done a column mounted shifter like Mercedes then the center console wouldn't have been such a disaster area. I find it a "what were they thinking" type of designs. Lol moment just recently as after 2 1/2 months I found out how to put the high beams on but it does indicate how well the AUTO functions, lights and wipers, work in daily driving. Just never needed to know! The noise complaints do gall me as that's my overriding impression of my 3, it's so quiet.
@@nixer65 Well other than having a shifter positioned in the console, I find the tall sides a questionable design choice and there is no storage mostly because this is not an EV only design. It's a repurposed Volvo product with all new exterior sheet metal where the drive tunnel has been turned into a housing for batteries and electronics. Although attractive, it's not exactly cutting edge design for 60 grand. Today's shifters are nothing more than electrical switches and should be column mounted and not taking up usable space on the console. Shifters are no longer connected to linkage attached to the transmission. Today it's all done by electronics. I haven't seen one on the road yet and would like to know their sales numbers. I maintain my opinion that this is a damn funny way to sell a car. I still think it has a good chance to turn into a white elephant.
I understand what you mean, there is no need for the shifter to be on the center console. The large center area of the Polestar is a love or hate kind of thing and the lack of interior storage could be an issue for some people for sure.
But keep in mind you were obviously not driving the updated car. You still had the old interior. The new version has much better headlights which are probably even matrix capable as short hand symbols inside the headlight clearly indicate they are capable of Adaptive High Beam, Kurve lighting, City-,Highway and Country Road light but not yet have recieved the update which will make all these features come to life and the car it's also quieter as many people confirm . There is no doubt the light pattern of the new headlights are made up out of multiple pixels. You can clearly see that if you point the beam towards a wall . No improvement of ride quality though, but there are rumors out there it will receive a new adaptive capable suspension soon.
You didn’t mention anything about the automatic software updates that improve performance, user interface and even range on the Tesla. The Polstar doesn’t do that.
Polestar actually does do OTA updates like a Tesla. They released an update in February or March that addressed the charging curve and increased the max charging speed as well as bumping the efficiency a little bit. And with Android Automotive as the OS the app store will increase at a steady pace. A Better Route Planner was just released for the Polestar as an in car app. More great stuff like this is on the way. :-)
Bradley I enjoy your vids but do you realise they contain ads featuring Farage, a man many in the country and especially here in the South East find repugnant
Hi Robert, thanks for letting me know. It's interesting to know what kind of ads come up and I'm very dissapointed to hear that these types have ads have appeared in my content. I'm 100% in agreement with you and I'll look at reporting this to TH-cam to find out if there is a way to avoid this from happening.
Both cars are totally unacceptable as far as secondary ride and road noise are concerned! The latter is clearly audible in the video even! Why does Volvo appear behind the silly pseudonym "Polestar"? Are they so ashamed of the price ticket? The car industry has a lot of growing up to do!
I’m sure the Polstar IS a lot more quiet than the Tesla. Especially when it runs out of range 68 miles before the Tesla and is sat there doing nothing.
@@SDK2006b actually in recent test done shows the difference is less then 10 miles difference between them in real world test , for some reasons polestar numbers are all under estimated, it's stupid they did that but hey its Volvo thing , but I was excited to see that owners of i3 bmw are being offered battery swaps and lion batteries give it 700 km range . Makes me want to buy another ev and do the lion swap.
@@SDK2006b I agree the build quality of the polestar is German like , the ride , quality of materials, unique features. I feel more at home in it , when I owned a tesla I felt like it's was a phone with wheels
@@AzizIzgin the long range 3 model vs the standard polestar, thou recently polestar has come out with a longer range battery unfortunately i did not get that option with mine , thou on a recent business trip i did get to drive a nio et 7 and i cannot wait for nio to come to north America, as the et 7 gets a 1000 km range
tbh polestar really looks like it was designed for chinize people, especialy chinize people over 40 years of age,so as a 23 year old westerner,i like the styling of the tesla
The Polestar 2 certainly offers value for money. But it pretends to be a Scandinavian car, while it is 100% Chinese (Volvo = Polestar = Geely). That's why I would never ever consider buying it.
Another great video. Thank you Bradley 👍🏻
Polstar all the way. Had mine delivered yesterday first impressions (after driving Jags for the last 35 years) WOW! Thank you for helping me make my choice over many excellent videos
Thanks, great to hear your Polestar has arrived!
Happy driving! I have mine for two wonderful weeks 😉👍
Did you receive a 16 amp or 32 amp cable? The cable rating not the plug rating. Lots of owner feedback to Polestar that the bundled 3 phase 16amp cable is a disappointing inclusion so I’m wondering if they have addressed this?
@@EVil-ob8in
Yes 32a cable. I asked Polstar a number of weeks ago and they confirmed that all cars now being delivered with the higher rated cable.
The noise and phantombraking, even when the road is completely empty, are among the reasons why i returned the Tesla Model 3 for exactly 2 years now. I am glad i drive a Polestar 2 PP now. :-) I do agree on all the good points on the Polestar. :-) :-)
Very well done. Logical comparison without any over weight bias and great disclaimers on the subjective stuff.
I use it to roll the car a short distance within my garage in order to walk to some of my shelves, and it has proven useful when parked too close to a charger and I want to unload my car (Teslas back into chargers) but find that I need more room to remove larger items (I can unplug, move the car, unload, move the car back, and plug in without getting back into the car)
I have a dog.
Great... more cars clogging up the roads and causing traffic because you want to summon it... smrt.
@@spl1011 what does it matter if no one is in it?
@@TeslaDo_d funnily enough I looked at buying the vauxhall ampera (the identicle car) many years ago.
That's a very good point! Thanks
Good comparative review of the two cars
This is the best comparison video I can find between these two cars. Great work, it is very helpful!
This is probably the best comparison video between these two cars. Well done and thank you. 👍
Watching this now in 2023. Polestar has a good price campaign here in Norway. The new 2024 models has improved range almost to the same level as Tesla model 3. I'm tempted to trade my Model 3 for one of these.
Great video Bradley, and agree with many of your points here :) Keep up the good work!
Thanks Kris!
Hit the nail on the head.
@@dtho6231 let’s analyse and see why he (and also I) consider the Polestar a better car
more expensive : it’s because Tesla just decreased all their prices by up to 20% in 2023 because of quarter results being much lower than expected due to competition. a few month ago if was the opposite. at the same time Polestar did an update and increased their price.
But most of all i consider P2 better because :
storage and practicality (hatch vs normal trunk)
instrument cluster (for me this is crucial)
noise level and overall confort (crucial as well)
sound system is better (crucial)
build quality (crucial)
headlights quality (crucial for security)
ride quality (crucial)
accelerator pedal well dosed and not on/off (crucial)
Why I don’t like TM3:
no instrument cluster
software not user friendly and difficult to read with very small font size that are not oriented towards driver
accelerator pedal is a disaster
I love the Polestar 2; I need to get a test drive in one.
Thanks for the road noise comparison. Didn’t see that in other Head to Head reviews - great stuff.
Thanks, yes I really hope they fix the steering input issue with an OTA update at some point!
@@ShortCircuitPS2 have they done that OTA fix yet?
Very good review. Polestar wins hands down for looks and build quality. You only need to look at how many videos are dedicated to checking a newTesla compared with a P2! The a aerodynamics helps efficiency as you said. Road noise is clearly better in the P2. If only you could hybridise the two
The new Tesla Model S is the hybrid of the Polestar 2 and Model 3. It's a hatchback, has a quality interior, driver display, is efficient with longer range, has great performance and an excellent public charging. Just a shame it costs from £84k 🤣
It will be interesting to see if Tesla ever trickle some of the new S features down to the 3 and Y models - e.g. driver display etc..
@@SDK2006b totally agree. I would love the dual screen but Tesla want to be radical for future self driving etc. The Y has the hatchback but will be considerably more expensive.
Ohmygod the noise difference when you go to the Polestar 2...hahahaha. You literally stop screaming ;p
Thanks for another great video. Would love to hear your comments on comparison with the Ford mac-e. At the moment I am not sure which car to go for
Excellent review yet again and glad you've had a chance to compare as I've only managed to get a test in the T3 but ordered the Polestar on the basis of your videos and you've now ticked off all my queries.
Great comparison, and although the Tesla has its good points, as a Volvo driver I would still choose a Polestar.
I had an eGolf before my Polestar. I agree with you that eGolf does adaptive cruise control really well. Loved everything about my eGolf
Brilliant objective informative reviews, Bradley. Thank you.
Great video !! 👍🏼⚡
For me, the only reason I would buy a current Tesla is if I was doing significant daily range and needed the better efficiency and the world class public charging network.
The range of the Polestar (~200 miles on 20" wheels) is enough for me and i'm happy to lose some efficiency & range, for the improved quality, driver display and better looks of the Polestar 2.
Hi Peter, thanks yes totally agree! My thinking too.
Great video Bradley. I removed the cupholder under the armrest in my Polestar 2. it is useless there and I have a little bit more space now🙂
Yes that's a good idea, I only discovered this could be removed a few days ago!
Really good, thorough and objective review I must say. Well done!
WE NEED A COMPARISON BETWEEN POLESTAR 2 AND MUSTANG MACH E !!!
I believe it’s coming in a software update later this year
@@nixer65 Am not sure, but I do not imagine it can be fixed just by software, as I said, it may need a physical heating element.
@@palemale2501 it's been done with n OTA update
The one biggest diff between these cars from all the comparison videos it the noise in Model 3 is extremlly loud...But polestar 2 is super quite...Sheeeeeeh...I thought they used different mic in these cars tbh
Thanks for your comprehensive videos - much appreciated. Will hopefully go EV soon - still not sure which one but as an ex Volvo driver I hanker for the Polestar. 👍
You cannot go wrong, either way. I have driven both, and the summary is just exactly as in the movie.
Excellent comparison!
great video as always !
one thing though about the pilot assist / autopilot: the P2 is all about safety (after all their parents are Volvo !). i think that displaying what the car see is just a distraction and while driving your eyes should always be on the road. the "apply steering" is definitely more aggressive on the P2, even more than a Volvo (i also have a 2019 XC90). the P2 requires you to touch and keep your hand for 2 seconds on the steering wheel to "feel" that you are actually focused/paying attention to the road. again, all it's about safety. tesla cars, in my opinion, are just gadget with wheels... :)
thank you bradley once again for your amazing job !
I have just left a comment saying the same. I have a 2020 XC90T8 and it’s way better on the steering input test.
I drive a Tesla Model 3 but I do prefer the styling on the Polestar 2
On the topic of color, in the US Tesla charges a $2k premium for 'vibrant' colors such as red or blue.... 😳
Great content as usual!
I prefer the Polestar because it's _not_ a Tesla.
Same. I likely would have got the Y for practicality if it was available but I got the Polestar 2 instead
Quite glad now, the Y isn't that efficient either.
Same.
Just subscribed to your channel 👍
Kind regards Bob
I still think some people also go for the P2 to be different from the herd and like the exclusivity and relative rarity. You have stated the pros and cons of both to enable a person to make a choice.
I don‘t give a damn about others. I buy what I like.
Polestar 2 would have been lot more competitive if it was priced 5k lower. It is just too expensive right now to be Tesla M3 competition, specially when you consider options like LED light, Glass sunroof etc.. cost extra where on Tesla M3, it comes standard even for base model.
Polestar is star lord... its a guardian ..
A question on the useable battery size : You mentioned it is 72 kWh - is this still the case? [I've search on Google and some sites suggest it's 75 kWh].🤔
Better boot space? (What's that?) from USA
Helpful video as usual. Thanks much appreciated.
No more government EV grant makes it a much more difficult choice. Now it feels like you could get the M3 performance for a similar monthly cost to the P2.
Yes thrown the cat amongst the pigeons that grant reduction. Doing it with little notice as well doesn't seem fair!
@@SDK2006b Not sure how they would feel about me doing that to a leased car!
Would you say that your polestar is more comparable to a model 3 SR+ based on range?
Another great video, but an opportunity missed. There will be some of your viewers out there, may be from northern climates, that may want to know other differences between the two cars. The Polestar 2 being full-time AWD and the Model 3 which is RWD with all wheel traction control. Very different. May be reviews of electric cars will evolve to comparing against ICE cars, like the Polestar 2 against the Audi RS4 and the Tesla Model 3 against the BMW M3! Interesting to see how they go.
I'd buy a tesla with my head, but a Polestar with my heart...
What type of wheels did you have on the PoleStar 2?
Appreciate the honest unbiased video, have already ordered a P2 and this confirms all the reasons why I went with a car manufacturer who produces an EV vs a software startup who decides to programme pigs, fly to Mars and drain German marshland in the pursuit of profit!
Must feel like going back in time in the polestar
Chortle.
Very honest thank you very much
Thank you.
But most of all....
I like the boot.
Any TCAM issue ?
So will you be buying a Tesla y?
@@nixer65 interesting
How long is your range after the update?
Do you own a long range?
I am still trying to choose between these cars.
@@AzizIzgin that’s all 100% - 5%. I generally charge to 90% unless I know I’m taking a trip that requires a full 100% charge.
I'd Def choose the polestar. Better company and product all round
Tesla has more front storage for you to put your gun in :)
We don't have guns in the UK.... thankfully
What is the problem with the center console?
Model 3 is with double pane windows?
No, this is the pre-refresh, however the double pane glass doesn't seem to make much difference anyway.
@@iowgtr having had both, it does.
FSD is 10 years away. Tesla cars without sensors and radar produced recently will never be FSD capable.
They released an update in
February or March that addressed the charging curve and increased the max charging speed as well as bumping the efficiency a little bit. And with Android Automotive as the OS the app store will increase at a steady pace. A Better Route Planner was just released for the Polestar as an in car app. More great stuff like this is on the way. :-)
Polstar is more expensive than the model 3...
Phantom breaking.... This will get solved by end of this year. Tesla is making serious changes to it's code.
I've never heard of this and I put 30k on my car in 2 years
Bradley I enjoy your vids but do you realise they contain ads featuring Farage, a man many in the country and especially here in the South East find repugnant
Google's algorithms choose the adverts based on what it thinks -you- might be interested in seeing. It's got nothing to do with Bradley!
Tesla Y the BEST!
The inside of that tesla looks like a cheap computer game car.
Tesla is way overrated!
Both cars are totally unacceptable as far as secondary ride and road noise are concerned! The latter is clearly audible in the video even! Why does Volvo appear behind the silly pseudonym "Polestar"? Are they so ashamed of the price ticket? The car industry has a lot of growing up to do!
Have you driven these cars!?!
The Polestar 2 is quieter when driving than my old G30 BMW 5 Series
I’m sure the Polstar IS a lot more quiet than the Tesla. Especially when it runs out of range 68 miles before the Tesla and is sat there doing nothing.
