    Great impartial and objective video - from the owner of the competition! Looking forward to your other videos. So far, my preference would be fit and finish and ride quality over range and for that, the P2 is ahead. Fortunately the P2 is what I have ordered and like you, I decided against the performance pack. The Model 3 is a great car - but it has its own deficiencies - drivers have to decide what their preferences are and go with that. Either car will be a great choice and the right fit for different people.

      When the Tesla charges it just charges. No silly drops in power with battery voltage way below limits.
      It is 100% pure amps limited from 10-40% allowing actual power to gradually increase during this period as voltage on pack rises. During this period it is not voltage limiting the pack at all.

      @@1kreature you're kidding right? The tesla quoted figures are a headline. Mine ramps up to around a max of 123 kw stays there for seconds and then ramps back down. It's fast enough but don't kid yourself that you get sustained rates at a high figure.

    Another excellent video, Bradley - thank you. I guess we anticipated the consumption difference, but the comparison of the two semi-autonomous systems didn’t give best to the Tesla, as I thought it might. And the noise level difference was a real surprise. Look forward to your further comparison, but feeling pretty pleased that we went for the Polestar so far!

      Thanks, yes I totally agree. I was worried that having a Tesla for a few days would mean I'd need to convince my wife to get the model 3 as her next car but to be honest I'm not feeling that way at all. She's more keen on the Kia Soul and I'd be happy with that! The Tesla range is very impressive though.

    I am definitely going to follow this. Just a couple of notes...
    #1: My cad got the face lifted 2021 Model 3 and I appreciate that it’s difficult to tell through video, but I am pretty sure that it’s quieter than the Model 3 you have. You can start hearing a bit of wind whistle from the frameless windows at motorway speeds, but there definitely seems to be less road noise (previously owned a BMW 3, X3, X5, and its comparable to those cars).
    #2: Some people say Tesla made the suspension on 2021 models softer. But there is no way to confirm I guess.
    #3: Just imagine the efficiency for the Tesla’s with the heat pump.
    #4: The phantom braking can be quite annoying. Unfortunately, my guess is that Tesla put the sensitivity through the roof after the accidents where people were not paying attention. Would be nice to know whether you experienced anything similar in the Polestar.

  • @TeslaDo_d
    @TeslaDo_d 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As far as the noise, what tires are installed on the car? I thought my Model Y was quiet, but I recently installed a nail in the front left one a little too close to the side wall. So, I replaced the 2 front tires with Bridgestone Turenza QuietTracks.....the sound from the front was noticeably less. I don't know if Tesla's Continental ProContacts get noisier as the tread wears down, or if the QuietTracks are that much better. I know that I chose them for their noise rating and their snow rating. They are generally much better tires than the ones that came with the car. I am replacing the rear ones next weekend.
    And yes, the suspensions are tight and sporty on the Model 3 and Model Y. They were designed to handle and drive like sports cars. Elon said this during the Model Y reveal event.
    I look forward to your honest comparisons. Another great video!

  • @15bit62

    As a Model 3 owner i think i would mostly agree with your evaluation here:
    - The Polestar is quieter. They have improved the noise issue a bit for the Model 3 2021 model, but it's still not great.
    - The Polestar does ride more comfortably. The Model 3 is definitely a bit "crashy" over bumps, the Polestar a bit better refined.
    - The visibility is amazingly good, except that the drivers side A-pillar tends to get in the way at roundabouts
    - The realtime display of traffic is just astonishing. With the FSD option it stops for traffic lights, displays whether they are red or green, and even beeps after they turn green to remind you to move.
    My experience with the lane-keeping on the Polestar was not so positive though - i found it tended to "bounce" a little up the lane. Definitely prefer the Tesla, though i'd really like them to tune out the phantom braking. Remember that the Tesla system is under very serious ongoing development, and will probably improve a lot faster than the Polestar pilot assist.
    I'm looking forward to your opinion on the windscreen wiper setup in the Model 3, and of the stalks in general.

    Just completed a 640+ mile trip from Gloucestershire to the NW Highlands of Scotland. Needed four charge stops (one of which was overnight) which worked out at about every 2hrs driving time. I used Google Maps and then Zap Map to plan route. I entered filters and car name with conservative figure for likely miles to a charge. Google Maps changed how far we could go whilst charging, which allowed me to miss out one back up stop I had planned. So I left home at 100% got to Warrington - Lymm Services - charged from 25% to 80% on Ecotricity 50KWh CCS (free) ; then went to Gretna Green Services and charged from 21% to 96% on Ionity Charger. Charged at Ionity in Perth on arrival to 96% (overnight stay) then a quick top up 30 - 80% at Tomitan Distillery (!) Charge place Scotland 50KWH CCS (Free with charge place Scotland membership. Road conditions were terrible on the way up to Perth with non stop rain, surface water and a temperature of 9c most of the way. The next day was cold 6c but dry. So in actual fact did not stop more often than I would have normally for this trip, although the stops were longer but probably better to stop and have a break and a drink rather than an in and out which I was prone to do in ICE days.

    Regarding the difference in efficiency, you must not forget that the PS 2 does initial heating of the battery while driving, the Tesla Model 3 does not. So on short distances that will negativly influence the efficiency of the PS 2. Also the Tesla M3 is very noisy and the driving is not that good comparing to the PS 2. That is among other things why i gave the Tesla Model 3 back within the 7 days returning window and i do not regret driving a PS2 PP now.

    An interesting & honest comparison. Like you l am instantly put off & turn off any video where the producer starts quoting facts and figures straight from manufacturers websites with no explanations or real world experiences. Tesla's figures always appear so much better than other manufacturers, when in fact Tesla use a different method to calculate range. Bizarrely the EPA allow this but this is very rarely pointed out. Tesla's are efficient, but there is no magic sauce. Personally it was the noise & poor build quality on the model l drove that put me off.

    Regarding ‘Autopilot’ because v little pressure is needed on the steering wheel to keep it happy, I find that it is actually an advantage to be able to disengage it easily. There is no need to make any steering corrections as it is so good at keeping in middle of the lane, as you mentioned you had to in the P2.

    Great to see a fair, level headed review of the Tesla. I think a lot of Tesla videos suffer from 'fanboy' syndrome, so it's refreshing to watch a real world review. The road noise in Tesla's has a lot to do with the single ply glass. I understand all newer versions have double ply glass which apparently cuts down the noise significantly.

    Great comparison video! As a Model 3 owner I agree it can be noisy when driving at speed. The suspension is definitely tuned for a sportier drive, which can get a little annoying on long trips, but I still prefer it for spirited driving. Also a tip for Autopilot, just rest your right elbow on the armrest and your right hand at 4'oclock on the wheel, and let the weight of your arm apply enough force to keep the system happy. This way you should never get any nags from the system, and you can relax. Does this car come with the FSD package? If so you should try out Navigate on Autopilot.

  • @twotone3871
    @twotone3871 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Always difficult to make fair comparisons. One difference to consider is if you want an AWD. Polestar 2 has full-time AWD possibly 60/40 rear/front power distribution. Model 3 is mostly RWD. Only uses front wheels for first 5 seconds of a launch, as a method of traction control where it kicks in the front drive if rears slip and for heating the battery. So obviously, the Model 3 will use less power.

      The thing I do would like to see improved in the Volvo Pilot Assist around town; yes you can use it around town and to a full stop; tap the steering wheel button to reengage Pilot Assist and move off from a stop... I do not like that the speed is constant if no car in front is being tracked by the system, the cornering on a relatively tight bend is not great imo in my XC60. Yes, it's a pseudo-SUV on air suspension, but would appreciate it if the Pilot Assist would slow down for certain bends. That's probably a higher level of vehicle autonomy?! Just my opinion. I'm in Australia and I had a Polestar (the fast petrol one), so I was dead keen to get a Polestar 2. Alas our draconian government is owned by the fossil fuel industry, so we'll have to wait a while. Meanwhile I bought a Model 3 Performance, which would be about the same price as the P2 when it gets here. Your review had reinforced my thought to buy the Tesla now and look at the P2 in a few years. It will mean bugs are ironed out and I can see what the depreciation will be like on both. The Polestar was a disaster in that respect. Everything you said so far gels with my experience. One thing that puts me off the P2 is the claustrophobic cabin. The high console and small glass house makes it tight. My Volvo was also tight for space and on long drives the floating centre console was impinging on my space when on cruise control and I wanted to pull my leg back a bit. The Tesla is so open inside it feels like a much larger car. Also storage is very limited on the P2 which was an issue for me before too. What I really loved about my Volvo was the lovely finish inside and out. I am very happy with my TM3 after a year, but it will be interesting to see how it goes after 5.

    You're making the distance calcs more difficult than they need to be surely. Just convert whpm into miles per KwH (200 whpm = 5 mpkWh etc) and multiply by the battery capacity. In fact, I think all cars should report in mpkwH as this is closest to MPG and is most familiar in the UK, and where a higher number is better (i.e it's more natural for UK owner anyway to think of 5mpkWh being better than 4mpkWh, in the same way 50mpg is better than 40mpg).

    • @ShortCircuitPS2
      @ShortCircuitPS2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fair comparison, but it's a shame that the comparison was not with the 2021 model with the double glazed front windows re the noise. It sounds like you didn't test drive a Tesla M3 before buying your P2. Will be interesting when you go back to your P2 that you will/would miss the app, charging infrastructure and efficiency.

    • @ShortCircuitPS2
      @ShortCircuitPS2  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The app is very good and I hope the Polestar one meets the same standard! I've watched a few noise test videos most seem to show that the noise improvements on the new car are barely noticeable.

    • @SDK2006b
      @SDK2006b 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mole Patrol - The double glazed windows will help reduce wind noise, but most of the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) comes through other parts of the car.
      The additional 300kg of weight the P2 carries around, possibly includes better/more insulation.

    • @molepatrol7529
      @molepatrol7529 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SDK2006b yes interesting how each car has its merits. The extra weight gives you better insulation and ride. I was torn but having had a previous electric car I found the charging infrastructure the bane for medium and longer trips. Sacrifice the ride for the better updated tech and efficiency of the Tesla. Sounds to me like the p2 is a very good car that was released before the tech was ready. That would annoy the hell out of me paying that much and still waiting for the app , 4G to be corrected, and OTA needing visits to a dealer.

      @ShortCircuitPS2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Two reasons, I couldn't get hold of the 2021 model so decided to do this with the car I was able to get. To add to that, there are improvements to the new Tesla like heat pump, some noise improvements (although many tests show it makes little difference) but it's still very much the same car. It's a minor revision, not a total re-design.

    • @SDK2006b
      @SDK2006b 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tesla are constantly updating their cars, almost monthly there are hardware & software changes/improvements added and some are more visible than others.
      This is great in one sense but as a buyer it’s often hard to know which version of the car you’re getting. The recent update revised the interior which makes it easier to identify but the majority of continuous changes are made under the skin.

      Tesla is a very different car maker to those we are used to, so the Model 3 you are odering right now, may be allready different to the one you order just a weak later.
      Tesla updates their cars along the line, rather than waiting for a new model change and they hardly lose a word about it.
      So allthough the cars look exactly the same, there maybe allready changes made to the car ordered just a week later.
      This unfortunately works both ways though, some people who had ordered their Model 3 still had the ambient lighting, and without saying a single word or mentioning it on their website they got rid of it !
      It is possible that some Model 3 refreshs shipped with additional sound insulation while others didn't.
      Just as some came with the new headlights and others despite having the new center console still came with the old headlights, or where missing the double glass pane front windows.
      Others again came with the old center console, but allready were featuring the new headlights.
      Tesla doesn't give a f.... about what the customer thinks about things like that, they just do whatever they please to !
