The insurance difference between the Tesla model 3 and polestar 2 is insane.
As a 21 year old with a 2 year license, 2 years NCB:
    Polestar 2 SM: £1,100
    Model 3 SR: £3,300

As a Swede, the model 3's interior is not Scandinavian. It is plain and cheap. The polestar is a Scandinavian design even though it is not obvious at first. Clean lines, everything that is necessary is there and everything that is un necessary is not present in the interior. Ive been in the volvo xc40 which has a similar interior and the space in that was enough. The tesla's centre console is not that clean actually as it is a crash between different non-matching materials.
On a different note, the reason the handels are the way they are is because it prevents them from freezing in cold Scandinavian climates, the tesla handels are know to free in winter here in sweden

My view - the Tesla wins on efficiency and the charging network. The Polestar wins as a car; it’s quieter on NVH, has a driver display and feels better built.
If you don’t drive 200+ daily miles and/or don’t need the Supercharger network, then it’s hard to recommend the Tesla.

7:20 As far as I know, the exterior mirrors on the Tesla isn't dimmed by a sensor, it's just dimmed by the date and time of day and location (the car simply calculates the ambient light level based on that, and then dims the mirrors). My Vaxhall Ampera has electronic door unlock buttons, 3 out of the 4 have broken, they are £200 ea to fix, I've never ever had a problem unlocking doors on any other car I've owned, I'm thinking since EV's are so reliable and last so long manufacturers are adding things that will break and cost a fortune to fix to maintain their income.

The Polestar wins for me with the hatchback form and think the infotainment interface is better designed (though the Model 3 is really excellent). I also think it looks better and i prefer the Polestar seats. In the end though the range and charging network of the Tesla tipped the balance cos driving round europe in a Tesla is just a lot less stressful than in any other EV. So we bought the Model 3.

The problem with the two cars occurs when you compare their prices (Norway). Polestar 4WD has 455 km of range and costs the same as a M3 4WD with 612 km range. Both cars are fairly similarly equipped, so it all comes down to practical things like range and space. I’ve tested the newest Model 3 for several days, and only got to test the Polestar for a few hrs. Following were drawbacks for me:
    - Polestar has about 100 km less range for same price.
    - Polestar is very crammed, and essentially losing a seat in the rear due to the transmission tunnel isn’t a positive.
They’re both brilliant in their own way, but this tipped the scales for me.

Menu is a pain to use it. Volvo/assuming polestar have the same way to turn it on os miles better, still via screen but tap drivers heated seat to being up either wheel or seat.

  • @CloutCoochy

Okay... when they were doing the "point" thing on the screen. The score should have been 8.5 polestar to 1 on the tesla because everything he said that was "standard" is still more expensive on the tesla? Just because it's on package in a polestar doesn't mean the point automatically goes to the tesla? What kind of logic is that?
The existence of the gauge cluster and everything that provides should be at least 3 points but for sake of argument we'll say it's 1.
So without talking about actual driving/range/performance (the same way they did the score on the video): Score is 9.5 Polestar and 1 for the Tesla..... yikes.

I have owned both cars, firstly the M3 for 2 years and now the P2. Here is my view:
    Polestar Likes:
    - Looks fab especially with ‘Thunder’ colour choice.
    - Lovely, quality interior.
    - Solid, ‘cocoon’ like driving experience (see below).
    - Strong regen ‘braking’ allowing single pedal drive.
    - Comfortable for rear passengers
    - Dash screen with map
    - Frameless door mirrors
    - 360 camera view
    Dislikes:
    - Lacks Tesla overall ‘Fun factor’.
    - Despite it’s power, lack of engaged driving experience. Odd accelerator pedal feel: harder to press and not smooth responsive increase in power like the Tesla. The feel of speed is less, the steering is not so crisp 3 and you are more remote from the outside. P2 is just, well like driving a car.
    - Need more driver adjustment in Semi-auto drive mode ie. pointless so adaptive cruise only useful option.
    - No ability to watch movies/tv and if there was, the screen is too small for it anyway. Without having watched a movie in a Tesla you would likely think, why would you want to do that?!
    - Downloadable game completely rubbish compared to Tesla driving car game.
    - No Fireplace mode. Perfect after a chilly Open Water swim!
    - No satellite google maps view.
    - No graphical display of anticipated energy use when navigating to a destination.
    - No in-car ability to set charging times.
    - Old fashioned non-flush exterior door handles, cheap old style interior handles and air vents.
    - No ability to remotely move car forward or back with the key or phone. Useful to gain access to boot if parked close to garage door or in a tight parking space.
    - Poor rear view.
So to sum up : The Polestar is a gorgeous car inside & out, It looks and feels the business!
But it’s just a car. In contrast, the Tesla transforms driving from an otherwise mundane A-B necessity into a fun, engaging experience. It made me actually look forward to my daily commute, something which just can’t be overstated.

Since test drove a polestar and it's a superb alternative. Insurance is only a couple of hundred more a yr than my leaf for the lower range model (more than enough) with pilot and plus pack added.
Its also a bit more affordable than a 3.* tesla pcp has a min of 10k miles a year and I don't even do 6k so am spending extra money. Sure I will get it back at the end of the pcp but better in my pocket. Latest offers trading in my leaf and the optioned polestar comes in at around £450 per month, tesla now £550 after the price hike.
My opinion is try them both, throw in another ev to compare and make your decision. From my experience tech and kit wise polestar is one of the few that come close unless you spend stupid money on high end alternatives.

So after your comprehensive trashing of the Polestar, we can assume that you kneel at the altar of Elon Musk.

I have to agree with Richard, my preferences is more aligned with his. I eagerly await my Tesla Model 3 Performance, but when I test drove all the cars, the polestar felt like a nice car, the model 3 was something new. That was my takeaway from the experience. I loved how Tesla have decided to just start from the ground up. Sure in some cases it won't suit everyone, and I'm sure lots of people will hate some choices, but to me I felt like I was sitting in the future, rather than just another car, as nice as it was. I also thought the ride was horrible in the polestar, but I drove the performance version and it was admittedly before all the updates, but still, its a normal car, much like my mums Volvo. Tesla felt more exciting to be in. If you don't like change, then Polestar is likely the better choice.

I think you need to drive both cars at motorway speeds before saying the M3 is as quiet as P2.

Polestar just looks better in and out, but objectively the model 3 is better. So not sure which I’d get given life isn’t all on a spreadsheet

The Polestar is beautiful, but it's overpriced. I settled for a Model 3 a year ago although my heart favored the Polestar. But the Model 3 has more range and more features for the same price.

Tesla is clearly more established too. Don’t buy from companies that aren’t major

One of the main things here in Australia is also towing. The polestar is rated for 1500kg whereas the tesla 3 is rated for only 1000kg :/ would have went for the tesla if I didn't have a boat to tow around...

What about the looks of the Tesla, the Polestar is a far nicer looking car and fit and finish on Tesla’s are awful. The lack of a HUD option and only a central screen for the Model 3 is also a big negative which rarely gets discussed in reviews? However, if you do high mileage the range and supercharger infrastructure makes the Tesla a better choice, otherwise the polestar looks a far nicer car.

Lack of a screen in front of the driver is a complete deal breaker for me for the Tesla. One of the main reasons I'm looking at the Polestar instead.
