    This is hands down the most helpful thing on the internet right now. As a musician who has very little experience with streaming or video production, clear, concise information like this is SO VALUABLE. Thank you.

      I agree! There aren't enough videos on TH-cam to help performing musicians (and others using their hands throughout a video). I already knew how to create a macro, but the information to make it go to 'random' camera angles was very helpful.

    for all those struggling getting it to work, here is my solution: After seeing the video a dozen times and even downloading "Sublime Text" software so as to have the saved file in an UTF-8 format there is 1 simple yet important step our friend Aaron forgot to include. When you have done all these steps you need to go into Atem's FILE > then choose "Restore" and finally choose that one file you created and edited. Then it will prompt you with a pop up window that shows only "Macro" with a small check mark, HIT OK and once you run your Macro and loop it,,,,,,IT will work!!!

    This video saved me sooooo much time. Thank you! I'm a woodworker, attempting to show how I make things using very dangerous power equipment that can cut a body part off in a blink of an eye. Setting my Mini-Pro ISO and three camera views on a looping macro is a game changer, especially when I can set the loop to be so random that no one can notice it's on a loop. I now keep my mind 100% focused on the task at hand, can safely make sketchy cuts using power tools and be at ease knowing my camera views are capturing all the interesting angles of what and how I'm doing something without me looking away to make a camera transition. Brilliant! You sir, deserve a gold star on your forehead!🙏🌟

    I love macros. 10+ years ago I was a newscast director and TD. It was hard for my brain, and macros saved me. I created one that would load the show open on the clip player, start in master black, roll the open, fade up and preset camera 1 with an animated shoulder box. Chromakey for weather was another handy macro. The smaller the crews and more responsibilities, the more valuable things like this are. I really appreciate you sharing your ATEM knowledge with all of us, I always learn something.

    Always great to hear what you have to share each week. Were you tired of live show glitches? Very well produced video. Received my ATEM Mini a few weeks ago. I've been wrapping my head around ATEM macros this week, your video helps to cement the new lessons. Thanks! I think these shorter edited videos are more valuable for viewers since they're more focused and easier to search for. I started doing the live shows when I stopped traveling, and it's been easier to keep those going than to keep a similar pace of the edited videos, they just take so much longer! I do want to get back into the swing of things and keep those coming out too though.

    I'm glad you mentioned the usability issue with BM's website. When you click a category nothing (appears to) happen. This is really inexcusable. An example of form over function. It could at least partly scroll down placing the categories at the top revealing the content. I doubt BM have actually tested their website at all, perhaps just seeking opinion on the look of it. Leaving a fundamental usability issue unresolved; something that catches me out EVERY time I am on the site.

  • @dwpix

    Love your videos!
    One question please-
    I have a rental hall and my clients bring in their own laptops and Macbooks to make presentations. Which HDMI splitter would you recommend using if I needed to feed a presenter’s presentation to both my projector AND my ATEM mini?

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, handling the wide variety of laptops that people have is really challenging. I would recommend not using a regular HDMI splitter and instead use something a bit more powerful. I've used the Roland V-02HD (geni.us/LiUB) for this before as basically a fancy 1x2 HDMI duplicator (you get the benefit of being able to switch to house slides between presenters too), or you can't go wrong with the Decimator MD-HX (geni.us/41upBQ) although that one has an SDI out so you'll need an SDI to HDMI converter as well. The plus side is you can use a long SDI cable to feed the projector, longer than you'd get out of HDMI.

    • @dwpix
      @dwpix 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Last question- I PROMISE!
      Recommended SDI to HDMI converter for use with the Decimater (for the input to the ATEM)

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Decimator makes one and the Blackmagic one is good too! I'd probably stick with those two brands, they're about the same price as the no-name brand ones anyway!

    Aaron, I am trying to incorporate your idea of camera switching & pause with Alex Pettitt's idea of Zooming (using Set A, Set B, rates) - to create a very dynamic macro that goes from one camera to another, zooms in, stays there, zooms out a bit, stays there, zooms out fully, transitions to different camera angle... etc. Buuut I must be doing it wrong. • @xtra4u210
    @xtra4u210 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks Aaron, on this topic I can see how the macros work and for creatives, we are now a stones throw from anticipating an inevitable update to the control panel software to have a second window open which would have eg a timeline but with 4 tracks displaying the macros that you randomly in ad hoc fashion programmed in with ease for demo purposes. However the mapping of Macros to a virtual video action timeline which itsel eg would have a timecode start for the duration of the event, in my case a music video performance. The musicians can then do practise runs with video directors instructions as to which camera to look at during the music piece like the Mick Jagger stare. Then the video Director using handles on the timeline can alter any macro by drag and drop, slide or extend duration etc. Net result is an EDL is created that then could be integrated into multicam on the cameras saved 4K clips and the Atem mini production be the streamed version and austensibly thought of as an early draft proxy version for a follow up " commercially " needed version that is high quality and where the Atem mini also served as a multicam creative tool and not necessarily a streaming tool. That way the product delivers two solutions for the price of one with a negligible cost addition of the VR timeline and Timecode, and who knows a software timecode generator that then jam syncs all four BM cameras. To me this is the most wanted logical step following your informative explanations as how the Atem can be expanded upon in pushing the boundaries of a studio in a box.. Would love to see a video explanation to all users so that BM can pickup on my suggestion and maybe implement this proposal eezy peezy. Would be truly mind blowing to get this final icing on the cake as its a software update that is not costly or demanding to implement in weeks let alone months. Keep up the good work, and hope we can get a highlights video that touches on all the wonderful tips that came out on all your live events, so we can revisit as a specific repository without spending hours relistening to all these live events. So a bullet points video on all the tips would be amazin. What do you say ?

    Aaron, if you have not purchased sound blankets yet, the least expensive heavy duty black/white blankets I have found are Supreme Mover Moving Blankets, 4 blankets for $90. Here is the exact blanket description on amazon:
    Supreme Mover Moving Blankets | 72 inch x 80 inch Heavy Duty Black and White Moving Pads| 7.5 pounds each (90 pounds per dozen) | 4 Blankets
    Moving blankets are rated in "pounds per dozen".
    * Light duty are 35 lbs/dz.
    * Medium duty are 60 lbs/dz.
    * Heavy duty are 90 lbs/dz.
    * Real sound blankets are probably heavier.
    Sound blankets quite often have multiple eyelets on each side. You can add these with a brass 3/8"-1/2" eyelet sets. No sewing, just a hammer, punch and die set. You might want a 2" x 2" nylon or canvas backing on each side under the eyelet. You can use black cotton cord to tie them up.

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The reason I haven't just bought something yet is because I'm trying to keep the aesthetics of the space in mind. I gave a sneak peek on my last livestream but I spent a while coming up with the look for the space, and I don't necessarily want to just cover it in blankets.

    • @robertharker
      @robertharker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I realize I did not mention movable stands. I recommend movable sound blankets because your space has no place to put acoustical treatment. You have painted the sheetrock and value the look and flexibility it gives you. You have put LED strips on the ceiling and you don't want carpeting on the floor. So where does the acoustic treatment go? On stands you can move behind the camera.
      A different solution would have been to put 1" or thicker rockwool on the wall and then hidden them behind fabric stretched on frames. Either 2'x4' panels with seams or wall size panels.
      BTW, Caleb Pike at DSLRvideoshooter has some great videos about acoustically treating his new space.

    • @tompfeiler1426

      I thought putting grommets in would be easy but reading reviews of grommet and punch sets revealed this might not be as easy as it seems. Can you recommend a good punch Grommet set for thick sound blankets kind sir? And 2 x 2 fabric canvas nylon I think I can find that

    • @robertharker
      @robertharker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am going to buy my blankets for location work and given the pandemic, I have posponed that. With you comment, what I would look for in a punch and die set is size. You want to install large gromets so the larger the punch and die set the better. Next do not use it on a table or desk which absorbs blows. A concrete surface like a step is best. The bigger the hammer the better. A 3lbs mini sledge would not be out of the question if you can safely wield it. Wear heavy lether gloves just in case the hammer slips. Finally prepunch the hole in the blanket so the gromet does not have to cut the fabric. But not too large a hole. Just large enough to slip over the male half of the gromet. Hope this helps.

    • @robertharker
      @robertharker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTW, the reason I recommend a black/white blanket is so you can use the white side as fill light and the dark side as negative fill.

    Hey Aaron! Thank you for the videos! I have a question about connecting to the ATEM software control through ethernet. I have the Atem mini pro.
    It does not connect automatically, I usually have to play around with disconnecting the ethernet from the Atem mini pro or disconnecting from my laptop. I sometimes even unplug the pro itself. I was wondering if there was a particular order that I need to connect in so the ATEM software control can open up correctly the first time. My internet sharing options are on also. I appreciate any help and I hope my question make sense. Thank you for your time

      Try setting a static IP address on the ATEM (using the ATEM Setup) app, that should make things a bit more reliable.

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's unfortunately no way to trigger macros from the buttons on the ATEM itself (one of my biggest complaints considering how many buttons there are!) But you can also use the software called Companion and connect it with some control surfaces like a Stream Deck which gives you an excellent option for controlling macros without using the ATEM software.

  • @saxjam
    @saxjam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now how do I trigger this via stream deck or Midi

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can use Companion to create a button on the Stream Deck that can start the macro! It's one of the supported features in Companion. bitfocus.io/companion/

    Can a macro be creeated where the switching between 3 or more cameras is random? Likewise can the switching be programsed where the dwell time, the time each camera is live, is variable between an upper and lower time limit?

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, there are no functions for choosing random values in macros, which is why I described doing it this way in the video.

    • @giovannispinosa182
      @giovannispinosa182 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronpk I'm sure I can use Excel to modify the XML file which will randomize the camera out selection and it's dwell time. What is the line limit that the ATEM cam handle? The use of the marcro is for a multi-hour broadcast and while I realize the macro can be looped, can you "choke" the ATEM with an XML file that is too large or have the ATEM reject the file altogther because the XML macro file size has been exceeded?

    • @aaronpk

      Make sure you record a pause action in the ATEM software interface when you record the macro, that should then create the "macro sleep" line in the XML.

    Hi Aron, i'm so frustrated we can not use this function, without a Computer, to film ourselves on stage.

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can! The computer is only needed to create the macro. Once it's created, it runs in the ATEM itself. You'll need a way to actually tell the macro to start. On the ATEM Mini Extreme there are physical buttons to run 8 macros. On the ATEM Mini, you'll need another controller, which could be a button in Companion, or you can use MixEffect on the iPad.
