  • In this video, I react to bass legend Geoff Castellucci (x4) performing his Low Bass Singer cover of "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold" from The Hobbit. I analyse his earth shattering performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and ultimately tell you what I think made it so great. I simply cannot get enough of this VoicePlay superhero. It was SO much fun analysing his voice with VoceVista for even deeper voicey nerdery.

His new mini of trust in me from Disney’s jungle book is pure ASMR to me. It’s all very low tones and that breathy lion purr sound. It usually knocks me out within 15 minutes and I’m an insomniac.
This used to be the one I would use to go to sleep to because it’s so soothing and gentle in a very very deep voice kind of way. Depending on how restless I am I listen to one of those two or a playlist that I have that has some of his really soothing deep sounds without a lot of high notes. Another good one is I put a spell on you, another mini.

Nice. One thing......... Most people get this wrong, but it's pretty obvious for bass singers. Geoff's first G1 on "gold" is subharmonic. The second one on "lay" is full voice - pure chest, not subharmonic. The last one, on "day" is a growl. Very different techniques: everyone knows chest voice. In the case of the growl, it's 100% false fold phonation. The subharmonic note, contrary to popular belief, makes no use of the false folds. It only uses true vocal chords, with ONE vocal chord vibrating at one frequency, and the OTHER vocal chord vibrating at another frequency. The result is the dropped subharmonic pitch.....

I can't decide which I like best. (Do you see what I did there?)
A couple of questions for you, if I may beg your indulgence: will you be releasing an album some time? I'd love to have I Can't Decide and any other songs you'd care to record with that level of passion and excitement as a CD some day.
There are several singers I'd like to recommend, and please forgive me if you've already recorded reactions to them - Geoff Tate of Queensryche (Take Hold of the Flame, Silent Lucidity, Empire or anything from Operation: Mindcrime); Michael Kiske of Helloween (Keeper of the Seven Keys, Future World or The Tale That Wasn't Right); and Fish (yes, it was a nickname, but it became his stage name, and I can never remember his real name) of Marillion (Grendel would be perfect, but any of Script For A Jester's Tear, The Web, Forgotten Sons, Emerald Lies, Fugazi, Chelsea Monday, Pseudo Silk Kimono or Sugar Mice would be great).

Speaking of low notes: The lowest note produced so far by a human voice was by Tim Storms at a frequency of about 1.89 Hz. Sensational but completely useless for making music. One period of the oscillation of the vocal folds would already span several bars (5.3 seconds).

What also gets me besides the incredible richness of his voice is his pitch. Look how straight those lines are on those longer low notes!!! Pretty good control when just 6 or 7 Hz can put you onto another note! I'm not so sure pitch correction even works that low, a 50Hz note doesn't provide a lot of data for it to work on.

Geoff may not be the lowest bass out there, but I would argue that he is the most melodic bass on the scene. He does have some natural fry in his voice, but he doesn't have the gravel like most other basses I've heard. Geoff's vocal timbre is round and warm and pleasant, and when you combine that with his vocal agility and range you've got a combination that is nearly unbeatable.

I love how you mix in the technical aspects of voice and how sound is produced. Your videos are always so much fun. I'd love to see a review of Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms. Thank you for putting this together, amazing as always.

While Geoff's Subharmonic Lesson helped me find it, Tim's usage helped me dial it in more. Of course, it's still a work in progress.

I always find it fun, but also slightly irritating listening/ singing along with Geoff. I can hit all the note, do all the techniques without to much difficulty, but because iv never actually practised singing, and have only really ever just played around with doing voices and sounds I heavily lack the polish and control that he has. So its always like "i can do it, but its not the same". Love the analysis! Can always learn something from your reactions! keep up the amazing work!

Take heart. He has been singing since middle school and he’s 42 years old. He started singing professionally in 97 when VoicePlay released their first album although under another band name. His wife says he is always singing. In the garden, in the kitchen, while driving, mopping the floor. He sings nonstop she said. So just keep at it. Practice apparently does make perfect.

I'll never get bored of the do's, the do's are essential to any musical masterpiece. I love bass guys like this, Geoff is one of my favourites. There's a version of this with about 20 bass singers on it, it's mental, I think they're called the wellermen. Also, check out Luke Taylor, I think he goes by luke the voice on here. He looks like he's fresh out of high school with his rosey red cherub cheeks, it looks like he's doing voice overs cause his face and voice just don't match.

David Larson, who is a master of subharmonics and has a number of tutorials on it, is the same. He looks like he’s in high school. Geoff had mentioned that David Larson was one of his sources for learning about subharmonics. So being a nosy person I checked it out. I was certain I had the wrong page because there was no way in hell that that kid could produce sounds but he is a master.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! I've been working on this stuff for quite a while now. Went from a D2 down to a good A1 and occasional G1 in chest, D1 subharmonic. Fun stuff! But I'm limited up top to about and Eb4; taking lessons and working on that. Oh, and I'm 68, lol! Very nicely done!

@@TheFairyVoiceMotherI "think" I've seen it used at least one other time when Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice) was measuring none other than Geoff for when he did "Ghost Riders"? Or it was VERY similar. Still, it is fascinating to see when someone like Geoff does his "subterranean" notes.

I have listened to this countless times. It has been my go-to when I needed to settle down and go to sleep. It’s slow, sonorous, and so soothing (how’s that for alliteration?😂) You pointed out so many things that I had never noticed. I don’t have musical training and I have a slight auditory processing problem so it really helps to have someone stop and point out something like you have.
I appreciate that you pointed out not only the singing but all of the music background and the sound effects. He is, in addition to everything else, a master storyteller and those effects help tell that story.
He did follow this up with I See Fire from Desolation of Smaug where the dwarves appear again. In I See Fire, each of the Geoff’s gets to sing which really shows off his range. And Babyface Geoff, as you call him😊, does not have the deepest voice in that one. It is Thorin Oakenshield with the big fur coat that drops the deepest notes.
If you’re just after really really deep bass notes, check out his cover of Unshaken. You will be shaken - I guarantee it! I don’t have musical training but several people have stated that he has dropped a number of G1’s in a variety of styles.
