This is my very first reaction and analysis of Geoff's solo work! It made for the perfect Halloween-themed joyful time indeed.

The Geoff clones' dance moves during the chorus become more complex each time they do them. The moves are a tribute to 4 of the most iconic monsters from the movies - Frankenstein's monster (arms outstretched), Wolfman (hands as claws and slashing), Dracula (holding a cape and bowing), and the Mummy (arms wrapped tight to the body).

    • @NativeNewMexican
      @NativeNewMexican ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm not seeing the Mummy. Instead he appears more akin to Frankenstein (the doctor/scientist) or Dr. Hekyl with an aristocratic appearance in a laboratory. Specifically the turning of the hand crank surgical screw suggests doctor.

This video is one of my favorite examples of Geoff's work. As for the characters, starting on the left, he's Dr Frankenstein, Count Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein's monster. The dead lady at the end who danced away limply with Geoff, who's been partly in frame the entire time unnoticed, is Geoff's wife Kathy Castellucci, who besides her cameo also does production management and costuming.
The trio of Geoffs are doing dance moves evocative of various monsters: Arms raised to the front is Frankenstein's monster, sideways stance with elbows pulled back and 'claws' up is the Wolfman, right arm over mouth as if holding a cape is Dracula, and arms hugged about the ribs is the Mummy. Each verse using this choreo has the moves getting progressively more complex, but preserving those basic movements.
Oh, and a fun tidbit at the end, while your attention is on Geoff dancing away with his corpse bride, over on the right at that moment, Frankie's doing a 'flossing' dance move. I love the little humorous 'Easter eggs' in Geoff's videos.

Geoff posted the following in the description of the video to give context to the costumes:
"I also want to send out a huge thanks to Rick Underwood. This video had to be re-filmed due to several issues with the original footage. Rick did some incredible makeup for the first shoot, but sadly our schedules did not align for the reshoot and we weren’t able to feature his amazing work. Kathy stepped in and tried her very best to make me look like the living dead. I was already exhausted so it didn’t take much."

His funniest is a cover of Elvis' Way Down. He does a cover of House of the Rising Sun where he is just showing off. And his very best is the piece he did last Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.
Voiceplay is amazing, they did In the Hall of the Mountain King in full makeup and costume that is brilliant musically and also hysterically funny.

I just love this song from Geoff. As you were wondering about the lady at the end, it's his wife Kathy. She is there during the whole song, laying on the sofa. If you watch her closely, you will notice that her leg moves several times as she winced when he hits a very low note during the song.

Geoff has said “Did you pick up on the "la la la" section? It's Bach's toccata and fugue in d minor, just shuffled and swung”. At the end, there is a hint of Fur Elise. Geoff has made videos about how to sing low, or very low, where he goes into the whole issues of subharmonics.

Might be Bride, but her signature sound is an open-mouthed hiss. Or, since that look is jealously trademarked by the owners, Geoff et al. couldn't dress her up like that. I thought she was a banshee the first time I saw this video.

    • @jaxtracrat1775
      @jaxtracrat1775 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hair style isn't right for the classic portrayal of the Bride, including missing the white lightning-esque stripe, but is still my best guess. Considering Kathy had to come up with backup costumes for the Geoffs and herself on the fly I think she did wonderfully, and if she is the Bride did a (s)mashing good interpretation. ;-)

The Monster Mash was originally written and sung by Bobby Pickett around 1962. It is a novelty song, specifically for Halloween. Elvis Presley said it was the most stupid thing he had heard. It's a FUN song, and is that not the point of playing it at PARTIES?
Well, nobody is perfect, not even The King.
Geoff portrays (from Left to Right): Doctor Frankenstein; Count Dracula; The Wolf-Man and Frankenstein's Monster.
The screaming lady at the end of the MV is Geoff's lovely wife Kathy, portraying The Bride of Frankenstein. Check the lyrics alongside the timing of the MV. :)

  • @MiladyMacabre
    @MiladyMacabre ปีที่แล้ว +7

The opening sung by the "monsters" is actually a twisted up version of the Toccata from the Toccata and Fuge in D minor. That, and the detuned Fur Elise, can be heard in the background from time to time. From left to right, Geoff is dressed as a mad Victorian scientist (aka Dr. Frankenstein), Dracula, Wolfman, and Frankenstein's monster. The only "classic" monster missing is the Mummy, but he's represented in the dancing. The monsters were performed in slow motion and shot at a higher frame rate to give that otherworldly creepiness. That's Geoff's wife, Kathy, being the awakened dead woman and she was there on the settee all along!

Another fun reaction! I did not know that about Beethoven and Elise. Cool!
Geoff and Kathy filmed this video twice. The first time Rick (who does a lot of makeup for Geoff and VoicePlay, like Hoist the Colors, Hide & Seek, and In the Hall of the Mountain King) went more macabre, and with the darker lighting on that set, Geoff felt it looked too much like a horror movie. Kathy did the makeup the second time, though Layne still helped him put in contact lenses. Monster Mash really needs a minimum of five viewings, to appreciate what each of the characters is doing. Dracula's invitation to dance at the end, Wolfman's flirtatious smile and wave, Igor (or Frankie, I'm not sure) doing the floss, etc. Though Geoff has been known to dance the floss for kicks and in a live performance of Rango, he says he's not a good dancer and has to put in a lot of practice. I can only think of three other videos in which he dances -- Way Down (super fun, and keep watching after you think it's over), and with VoicePlay in Cheerleader and Boy Bands in Five Minutes.

Great reaction, Lolli! And sounds like interesting work on the subharmonics. Elizabeth Zharoff over at The Charismatic Voice recently had a video where she invited a metal singer to a voice lab where the doctor/voice specialist has been doing research on the voice, where a camera was put down the pharynx and was able to image the epiglottis, false and true folds, etc., while this metal singer was doing his various growls and other distorted tones. This fellow had some extreme twists of his epiglottis, nearly at a right angle to its starting position, while producing these sounds, that they described as a 'unicorn' of a vocal technique. It was all very fascinating, and all quite over my head.... lol
Not sure if you and Elizabeth might put your heads together on the different kinds of research you each are doing and find some common questions or investigations, but if some camera work is in your project's future, perhaps she could be a helpful contact?

THANK YOU! I've been doing subharmonics for a while, and just from experience and what I've read, this does not feel like false folds at all. However, I contacted someone that's been looking into this, and they seemed positive it was false folds. I don't have any scientific background in this, so I thought "who am I to say it's different?", and I thought maybe the subharmonics were made cause vocal folds sort of slap the false folds to make the double note (I don't know throat anatomy either) and that was why it didn't feel like the false folds were in use when doing subharmonics.
It still bothers me though, my gut tells me it's no false folds at all, so I can't wait for your findings on the matter.
Keep up the fantastic work! It's really a joy to watch.

As for the 'jolty' movements the dancing Geoffs are doing: he filmed it with the song playing at a slower speed/slow motion. He sang and danced along in this slower pace and sped it up afterwards to match the original speed of the song. So the 'joltyness' comes from the fact that it's in fast motion!

He did a credible exaggeration of the voice of Boris Karloff, an English actor who played Frankenstein's Monster in the original Universal Studios production of Frankenstein and other parts in many horror films. Or Voiceplay's "Hoist the Colours", another fantastic performance of the whole group. In the last videos I watched by VP, he hits some truly low noter or sings really low parts, but as a background voice, so it's not that easy to catch them because the ears and eye are focused on other things... 🙂

The song does loosely follow a simple riff in the Dorian mode, though, which allows that shift between Major, minor, dominant, and suspended chord tones. Geoff and even VoicePlay seems to like songs that revolve around opening in Dorian or Mixolydian because of the Major/minor ambiguity it creates -- and ability to weave between it.

The opening vocal chord progression is from Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, after it was fiddled with by Geoff. (edit) That Fur Elise riff was used a total of four times beginning right after "Mystro".

Really enjoyed your reaction, Geoff is amazing. If you’d like to check out another awesome bass, I’d suggest Avi Kaplan, for example “Change On The Rise”, “I’m Only Getting Started” and “When I’m A Fool”. I’m quite sure you’ll enjoy his music, he never disappoints.

Your technical expertise, your scientific approach, your (obsessive?) knowledge of the field, give a great depth of value to your reactions; blessed be!
i would value your analysis of a musician who created music that seems deceptively straightfowards, and sang his pieces in a seemingly quite ordinary tenor, and yet achieved extraordinary impact. I refer to Warren Zeevon, and i recommend to your attention six pieces: "Keep me in your heart"; "Lawyers, guns and money"; "Desperados under the eaves"; "Life'll kill you"; "Mr Bad Example"; and - a song of great help to many with chronic diseases - "My shit's fucked up"...

8:56 Ma’am you did that growl!!! That means you can easily master subharmonics!!! 😜
By the way, someone managed to create subharmonics on a violin. She is very popular and she does seem to have quite a lot of control over the violin subharmonics and also manages to get different subharmonic notes out of just one fundamental note played on one string, even a major second which is not a typical note that you can produce through subharmonics...... so do check her out......(maybe search for violin subharmonics and you may find her)

Loved this reaction as always. Got a challenge fer ye, Ma'am. Despite multiple requests, I have yet to see a reactor do a reaction to my cousin, Doc Watson. He's no longer with us, but he was widely known in Bluegrass and Appalachian (apple-at-chan) folk music. Despite bein completely blind, he was also widely considered the father of a style of guitar pickin known as flatpickin. I recommend his songs Tennessee Stud and Sittin on Top of The World. Please react to this great man and artist at yer discretion. Thank ye.

And, yes, knowing about your studying of subharmonics, I will definitely be tuned in. It is because of Geoff I now use them -- never did until a year ago. Now, I can hit down to G0 without thinking about it much and Eb0 is my lowest. Never really understood the mechanism; just know I can do them, lol.

Geoff has a couple short t tutorials on singing low and on subharmics. Very interesting.
The beautiful woman with the awesome scream is Geoff's wife Kathy. She's limp because she's supposed to be dead.
    Characters left to right..
    Dr Frankenstein
    Dracula
    Workman
    Frankenstein
Geoff and Voiceplay put out some Halloween videos as they do every year. This year...
    Voiceplay...
In The Hall of The Mountain King.
    Hide and Seek(Ding Dong).
    Geoff...
    Ghost Riders In The Sky.
Pattycake Productions also has a bunch of great videos. Bump In The Night is their most popular Halloween video. Along with Villains Haunted Mansion. And quite a few others.
Their very popular The Villains Lair series is about the animated Disney villains. But live. The actors are all very talented in their characters. Pattycake just released Season 2 Episode 4 That's All.
Layne, Voiceplay beatboxer and Tony, former member own Pattycake. All videos are original. Written, produced, edited, arranged, etc by them.
    Ok. Enough rambling. Sorry.

I'd like to add a little feedback for your theory on subharmonics. I've been practicing Mongoalian throat singing for almost 4 years now, so I'm quite used to the muscular feeling of the false chords. I also have been practicing subharmonics for about a year, and I can confidently say that I don't trigger them with the same muscular group. So I think that you're definitely right in your theory.

Enjoyed your reaction as always. I love how technical for you are. I enjoyed your dissemination on the subharmonics. I did notice in one of Voiceplay's songs, their cover of Running Up That Hill: At around 3:13, there's a tight shot on Geoff's face when he does a bass drop, and you can see his throat 'drop' as he drops the tone down... It always catches me. Anyhow, with your knowledge of vocal anatomy, it might give you insights in your quest. Thanks for the reaction.

That sub harmonics study sounds right up my alley as someone who does it. In all honesty I'd love to get the Will Ramos treatment where they scope me while I sing and do various vocal techniques. I've dabbled quite a bit into beatboxing, I've essentially mastered multiple forms of metal vocals, I can even do some more basic Kargyrra as well. that subharmonic sounded great! keep working at it, can't wait to see what you've learned about subharmonics and what conclusions you've come to. I've heard the common theory about false folds as well, but I've also hear it theorized that (IF I remember correctly) one fold ends up vibrating at a perfect 5th above the other, do NOT quote me on that though. besides that though lovely video, provided some great insight i hadn't heard before about this particular video, so thanks for that 😁. have a splendid day 🙃
