    In this video I show you step by step how to properly install a floating shelf. Floating shelfs shouldn’t look like drooping old person skin they should stand at attention and salute a job well done. With this video you will have the knowledge needed to make that happen!

    Just a work of caution to check for wiring and/or plumbing running through wall studs. These are typicality run through bored holes in the middle of studs. The 2” screws will short a wire or puncture a pipe if present. Good info on installing the floating shelf.

      Don't know about US regs, but in UK, you wouldn't be allowed to run non-conduited cable horizontally at that height as it's not a designated 'safe zone'. That said, you can't be sure that some nutter hasn't done so!

  • @billymacmakes
    @billymacmakes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Those steel brackets are great - but be careful with a 2"+ screw - there could be wires or water pipes that run through the centre of the studs (code allows for this, meaning it could be as close as 1 3/8" away from the front edge!) Nailplates would likely only be used if the hole was closer than than 1 1/4" from the front, so the long screw is strong, but a tiny bit of a gamble if you're not sure what's back there!

    • @chandler3992
      @chandler3992 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey contractor here. You'll know if there's wire or pipe running through something typically wire is not run any higher than 18" for outlets and approximately 42" for a switch. If wire is being run it will be about level with the outlets. Typically wire is run down the side of a 2×4. So in other words you will not hit a wire unless your electrician was on crack. As for pipes the only pipes you should find in a wall should be around anything that requires water. Pipes are run basically from a to b "path of least resistance". Here in Florida it's buried in concrete or run through the ceiling down to your bathrooms and kitchens.

    Love you’re teaching style. Very clear and all the good tips. I watched this because I do -exactly- the same thing, even have my own brackets made up by a local welder - very similar to yours but a longer tail on the plate to help prevent leverage issues. In the UK most walls are plaster on brick, but I still strip the plaster back to sit the plate on brick. I backfill and decorate before measuring and drilling the shelves. I also make solid shelves which you could park a truck on!

    @bourbonmothwoodworking this tutorial is great and I appreciate you making it. Just a word of warning if you aren’t going to have custom made brackets to exact measurements and are using stock lumber (1.5” thick), the brackets you buy online (I purchased the ones in his description) you will have gaps above and below your shelf that you will need to patch as the brackets are just slightly larger than the lumber.
    Everything about the tutorial is spot on though, even when you are wingin it and find your drywall is held up by furring strips on concrete and you gotta adjust on the fly 😂.

Let me just give you a small amount of constructive criticism: these older videos are much more educational and interesting to watch. You’re more serious, providing real-world projects and examples, working on actual client projects and showing how you would do something which is always the smart way. The box shelf video at the beginning of this playlist was excellent. I have built many of them, yet, you still provided new tips I had not thought about. Top upgrade to crappy 'Big Box' brackets.
    This was not my own idea, but I saw another tutorial on installing floating shelves and the strongest solution, and cheapest, was to use good old threaded rod.
    If you do any site work, you find short lengths getting chucked out all the time.
    I make the shelf, drill the holes to suit the threaded rod and location of studs, and then use a cordless drill, with the rod in the chuck, to drive the threaded rod into the shelf. Then, I mark a level line on some painter's tape and drill the wall or stud.
    I find it better to make a timber jig to angle the hole to accommodate the rod in the wall, so that the shelf sits, initially at a slight upward angle. That way, there is not need to use any adhesive or silicone, allowing you to slide the shelf off at a later stage, without having to worry about it coming off if it is overloaded.
    I've make quite a few like this using hardwood with live edges and they look fantastic!

    I like lag bolts. Pre-drill the holes to the shank diameter and desired depth, so as not to split the stud.
    If using solid boards, cut the heads off, then drill the shelf to the desired depth. Slide on the shelf.
    If using a box design, drill the back shelf board, leave the heads on, and mount the bolts through and into the pre-drilled stud. Then, slide the rest of the shelf over the back board and secure it to the back from the bottom. Can also use this method to create floating drawers too. 👍

      Good idea, have you made a gig to keep them perpendicular to the wall?

    Love the tip about cutting away the drywall.. makes perfect sense you will get more stability securing to the stud.

    I purchased the shelf mounting brackets and they are hollow. The flexing and twisting that occurs when trying to mount these level is pretty much non preventable. I prefer solid steel. Also, these holes are not spaced well for stud mounting. I had to install these vertically to work and the drywall repair was more than I had expected.

    Gotta say..... I am completely disappointed and devastated that you chose not to show us a backflip off the shelf. Based on your early bragging in the video about how you hang shelves with those brackets and they are sturdy enought to stand on and do backflips off of. Just kidding!! LMAO!! Another great production sir, you should be warming up your acceptance speech thanking the academy!

    So easy with your American houses made of ticky-tacky, and with itty-bitty lightweight shelves. Try putting up a 6 inch thick by 6inch wide, 5 foot solid oak beam, on a rock hard brick wall, like that. We do SERIOUS stuff over in UK :-)

    Wall studs are not usually installed on the flat, which would make them 3 1/2”. Installed on edge, which is the usual method, the nailing or screwing width is then 1 1/2”. Your said your studs were 2 1/2” wide. ???. But will your brackets work on a 1 1/2” edge?
