Greninja being “busted” was very much an early meta misconception which wasn’t actually the case. He did get a few notable nerfs early on but even before the nerfs, Greninja was a very flawed character and his high perception came from the fact the character and the game was new, so people didn’t know the matchup or even how to play the game very well for that matter. While there were notable nerfs, they weren’t drastic changes which pushed him from top tier to mid tier. I get why some people hyped him up early on but it was something that just wasn’t the case in hindsight and you will find that with the early history of literally any competitive game. And “Greninja was continuously nerfed” is just flat out not true at all. It is a blatantly false misconception. In the game’s first major balance patch (3DS to Wii U), Greninja did get a few notable nerfs but in later patches, Greninja almost exclusively got buffs in many future updates and some of his buffs were actually really good changes which aided his gameplan and ironed out certain weaknesses. He got a few initial nerfs but then he got continuous buffs.

Idk, I wouldn’t call it more broken. I always thought it was stupid that the freeze glitch was banned but wobbling wasn’t since they’re essentially the same thing. If anything, it should’ve been the other way around since the freeze glitch is way harder to get.
@@thunderd7904 idk about you but i think freezing your opponent so they can't do anything is insane. wobbling and freezeglitch are not in the slightest the same thing. it's also not even that hard to do (i can do it). both are bad for the game but at least wobbling had a little bit of counterplay before it was banned. freeze glitch doesn't have any counterplay.
@@novaaze1975 I still don't see the difference. The opponent literally can't do anything in either situation; they're stuck regardless. Both are initiated from a grab and achieve a stock loss. Again, the only real difference is that with freeze glitch, you can put down your controller whereas with wobbling you have to keep doing the inputs (which isn't hard) so again, what's the difference?
@@thunderd7904 when stalling wasn’t regulated at all there was a huge difference. Puff has a banned stall like this with sing stalling. It’s an absolutely massive advantage to not have to play the game. With wobbling you couldn’t go on forever with the 300% limit
Greninja was never an OP/broken character in Smash 4, not even close. As someone who has played and heavily researched early Smash 4 3DS, I can very confidently say that Greninja’s hype back then was simply early meta syndrome (similar to how some people thought K Rool was OP in early Ultimate but he really wasn’t. Greninja was a mid tier in the later stages in Smash 4 and in vanilla, I’d say he was high tier at the most. Greninja’s Up Smash was really good back then and the main highlight vanilla Greninja had over later versions of Smash 4. Definitely one of the best up smashes in the game back then. However, it wasn’t perfect. The move was mainly strong when the opponent was above you (being a nasty anti-air) but it wasn’t quite as strong if the opponent was in front. It had good range and decent power but it did come out fairly slowly, so it wasn’t particularly hard to shield. It was hard to punish due to the move’s low ending lag but it could still potentially be punished depending on how Greninja used it, especially with a powershield. Even if you couldn’t punish the move, you still had a decent frame advantage against Greninja which you could utilise. Additionally, early 3DS had a different DI system and you could utilise it to reduce the combo and KO potential of Greninja’s up smash, which could otherwise be really nasty. The nerfs to up smash were significant but not quite tippy top tier to mid tier significant. It was still a really good anti-air, it just lost its combo potential and became easier to punish. Greninja’s landing lag cancel with Shadow Sneak wasn’t actually very good. It could be used as a landing mixup at best. The main limitation which the landing lag cancel had is that it had a whole 16 frames of startup where Greninja was completely vulnerable. This meant that it was easily punishable and it didn’t even reduce the landing lag of a majority of Greninja’s aerials. The opponent had consistent punishes for Greninja’s aerials whether he performed the cancel or not. It also had almost no combo potential as Shadow Sneak was so slow and the Shadow Sneak itself was extremely risky. Even when used as a landing lag cancel, Shadow Sneak came out extremely slowly and it had extremely high ending lag (even higher than in later versions of Smash 4). The move was a death sentence on shield and if the opponent predicted you were going for the landing lag cancel, they could very easily shield the Shadow Sneak and get a monumental punish (a much bigger punish compared to if they didn’t shield at all). The Shadow Sneak also didn’t hit as hard as later versions as a sidenote. It wasn’t useless as you could use it as a landing mixup but it was purely a landing mixup, and an extremely risky one at that. It is a shame that Greninja lost it but losing it wasn’t s game changer or anything. And those are the main things I wanted to mention. Greninja did get some other notable nerfs such as to fair and uair but nothing that was too significant. Greninja also ended up getting some pretty significant buffs later on, such as his grab and Shuriken becoming much faster, noticeably improving his punish game and his camping potential. Greninja wasn’t a bad character in early 3DS but he wasn’t a super top tier either, and his changes weren’t as harmful as often perceived. I understand why he was hyped up in early Smash 4 but I can guarantee you that if Smash 4 didn’t get balance patches, he still would have fallen off as the meta progressed. Early Smash 4 3DS had much nastier characters than Greninja. Sheik and Rosalina in particular were absolutely insane in early 3DS and they got some pretty significant nerfs in later versions (while still remaining top tier after all of their nerfs). Those two characters in the original 3DS form were probably the strongest characters Smash 4 saw outside of DLC. Sorry this comment was so long, I just have so much to say about this topic (I even made a whole video on the topic).
Maybe. The game was still new and unoptimised so people hadn’t quite figured out the matchup or the game for that matter. There were even more characters who were considered top tier back then who absolutely weren’t (even less so than Greninja) such as Yoshi and Little Mac. It’s just what happens when a game is new.
From melee to ultimate: most broken characters Melee: shiek Brawl: Meta knight WiiU/3DS: Bayonetta Ultimate: Steve (Based on tournament wins and combos)

@Dragonfruit Thanks. I just hate the competitive scene because they take it way too seriously and complain about every single thing. "Use this character!" Don't use that character!" "You're supposed to follow these rules." Sakurai specifically gave every stage a battlefield or Final Destination form yet they ignore it and complain.
I really disliked it just because none of the characters I actually liked were anything but low to bottom tier. I’m a principled DK main, that doesn’t let you get far.
10:53 Obligatory "Cloud is in the Kingdom Hearts series including the second game _Chain of Memories_ exclusively for the Nintendo Gameboy Advance and the sixth game _Re:Coded_ exclusively for the Nintendo DS." comment.
I can totally knew how the Ice Climbers were broken because they couldn’t make it to Smash 4 due to the 3DS not allowing to controllers to fighters in 1 player. The Wii U was doing fine but the 3DS couldn’t handle it due to being a limited to software like only allowing 4 Fighters on screen and it could not do 8 fighters on screen with 2 characters being 1 Player each. It was just too much for Nintendo they were going to add it to Wii U and 3DS as DLC but ended up being cancelled because the 3DS couldn’t handle 2 same size characters with the exact same moves for 4 Players which makes it 8 in total.
Steve can literally carry a whole shulker-filled inventory of 64 stacked blue ice(which is 81 buckets of water, which a bucket of water is basically almost infinite, so 64x27x81) with netherite armor equipped. and with his midair block placing ability steve would be just super op and mid air minecarts bruh those are so annoying
Steve doesn't feel like he's nearly as bad of an issue as smash 4 bayo or brawl meta night. He's annoying, he's slippery, and he has some game breaking glitch but then just give him the ice climber treatment and ban that one tech.
Firstly, the video literally explained right at the start that it was nigh impossible to enforce, as EVERY tournament would have to pour hours into reviewing the footage of every Steve match just to see if he used the tech during it or not. Secondly, Steve is 100% on par with B4yo and 🅱️etaknight in his own unique way. B4yo made every interaction a death trap, as a single stray hit could lead to a 0 to death and Witch Time made it far too dangerous to attack as she could get a free 0 to death. 🅱️era knight was overpowered because he could completely circumvent the game’s clumsy mechanics (chaingrabbing, tripping) while excelling at every facet of regular gameplay, such as a perfect recovery, massive amount of jumps, a sword that outranged MARTH, etc. etc. Steve just doesn’t play the game. He can create new platforms to gain the high ground, build nooks to turtle, hit the opponent with a lighting fast hitgrab/tatsu that can take them straight to the blast zone, deal massive amounts of damage with the right tools, perform setplay with TNT that ALSO covers nearly all ledge options BY ITSELF, gain combo extensions using blocks, combo other people across the stage, has a recovery that makes 🅱️etaknight look like Little Mac, and to top it all off he violates the two sacred rules of Keepaway characters; 1. Do not have a limitless supply of the resource that allows Keepaways to retreat safely (blocks, minecarts, etc.) 2. Do not give them a passive win condition (diamonds). Steve 100% deserved to be banned even without his glitches, as every match would devolve into horrid Steve mirror matches, where at least B4yo and 🅱️etaknight are entertaining, Steve is downright mind numbing.
@@callumbreton8930 "Recovery that makes Meta Knight look like Little Mac" The recovery in question: Side-B into Up-B. Maybe some fancy gliding. Meanwhile, Meta Knight can recover from anywhere with each of his four special moves, and his gliding makes Steve's look more like falling with style. He can literally glide from blastzone to blastzone three times over. Steve's zero to deaths and defensive options are a fraction of what Sm4sh Bayonetta are. Bayonetta could turn literally every neutral interaction into a stock, and it was braindead easy. And comparing Steve to Meta Knight in any aspect? Laughable. Meta Knight has a brutally overpowering neutral, unparalleled shield pressure, the safest and most effective camping in Smash history, out of the charts mobility, incredible edgeguarding, ledge trapping, reversals. You name it, Meta Knight has it. He singlehandedly got over half of the stages in the game banned. He makes a character that can kill you at 0 off of one grab look like a low tier. He can literally become *completely invincible* by just mashing one of his specials. He has *better framedata* than Steve's Golden tools, with the same kill power as Diamond. He singlehandedly made any character that doesn't *hard counter* him *unviable.*
Great video overall, although I do have a few corrections to make, especially regarding Cloud in doubles: Double Cloud was actually nowhere near the best team composition with the character, since both of them still had the exploitable weakness of their recovery. People generally agreed that Cloud was much better when paired with characters who had decent recoveries, cause were less likely to get gimped at low percents and could more easily save Cloud when he was recovering offstage (Pikachu, Sheik, Bayo, etc). In fact, if you look at the best doubles teams in Smash 4 (Mkleo/Javi, ZeRo/Nairo, Esam/MVD, Komorikiri/Ranai, etc) all of them used Cloud + another character instead of double Cloud - the only ones that did use double Cloud were Leo/Komo on the few occasions they teamed and Leo/Javi, but even then Javi used Sheik as much as, if not more than Cloud. It was for these reasons that GOML actually received a lot of criticism for only banning double Cloud - not because the ban went too far, but because people felt that it didn't go far enough to address the issue. The problem wasn't double Cloud - it was straight up just Cloud, period. Also, the Greninja tech you showed on screen at 9:19 was actually an unrelated tech called the shadow sneak slide, which never got patched out of the game. I imagine you probably showed it instead just cause there isn't much footage of the you were talking about, so I won't really particularly fault you for that. Just thought it was worth pointing out Again, not trying to be overly negative or anything, cause this is still a really well done video. Just wanted to correct a few of the mistakes I noticed
Part of the Hero ban consideration was the potential language barrier for anyone competing in a foreign tournament. Just thought I should mention since you didn't! It wasn't entirely just the random nature of menu!
Just charge people a fee to Play that Character in the Tournament... depending on the size of the venue and tournament, the fee can scale depending on if it's a E3 Calibre event imagine having to pay a few hundreds to play a character

I am NOWHERE CLOSE to these gamers but everytime I play with sepheroth and his shield is op, if someone attacks me with a direct attack shield and after attack is so usefull, my friend plays usually with bayonetta and when she uses the giant hand on me she's ALLWAYS in the mercy of my attack
Bayo is either one of the best high tiers or one of the worst top tiers, similar to Terry imo. Her weaknesses technically exist but she has so many unique options that they don’t matter. Her landing lag is often a non issue since she can use her specials to retreat to ledge or witch time to cancel all lag and kill YOU for trying to punish her. Her kill power as you said is actually not bad, and even if she’s not killing you until 180%, she got most of that damage off of two combos. She’s tall and light but has one of the best disadvantage states in the game, so abusing that is not easy.
I'll be real, it just sounds like cope for many who do not want to adapt to new playstyles. but hey, I don't play fighting games like Smash so take that with a grain of salt.
Hero is not broken. His abilities are balanced by his slower frame data, and his fall speed is very slow. If you get him in the air he’s screwed. The randomness adds a chaotic factor which forces people to adapt on the fly. Smash autists don’t like him because it prevents them from being able to rely on autistically memorizing all the characters move sets so they can automatically counter each attack through muscle memory. They want everything to be clean and predictable so that the fight simply boils down to who has the fastest reaction time rather than actual strategy.
Steve is broken, he has a answer for everything and he’s literally built around digging which makes digging super easy so do then counter those who come at you while digging, and he has he side tilt into spike off map. Literally so hard to DI that even at low Hp and DI you’re getting spiked
I have smash ultimate, but I haven't purchased all the dlc fighters. Yes, I grabbed byleth, pyra, and sephiroth. But I feel overall they are pretty well balanced because byleth is slow and has so many different weapons, while pyra has the switching gimmick, which is better for her since mythra is also a sword user (I hated Zelda/sheik swap)
100% love this video, my mentality is if the character is at least top 5-15 then they should be looked at for a ban, if they are mid tier even if RNG heavy you can still play around it unlike the consistent top tiers that many players try to defend despite not being healthy for the game. Like it's crazy how some even wanna bad low tiers when they already have it hard enough just to spite those players including me. Well I sure hope the next game fixes Steve and others. (as for Aegis yeah they can actually leave, they set the bar to the ground when it comes to stance characters. (Not sorry for Aegis fans you are next to be on the major nerf/remove list))
That’s kind of a dumb outlook. If the character is top 5-15 they should be considered for ban? If you ban the top 5 characters, the next 5 take their place and nothing changes. Eventually it gets to the point where Ganon is the only legal character. A character being good or the best doesn’t warrant a ban. Characters are only up for ban when they either have some game breaking exploit or invalidate a good portion of the cast since if those two conditions are not dealt with, player base drops, viewer base drops, and subsequently game health and profits drop.
@@thunderd7904 Dude I'm saying there should be a cap on how powerful a few specific characters can get before they should not be used in tournaments due to how truly unhealthy they are to the game if they have an enormous pick rate. As long as the new top 5 doesn't outshine the rest of the cast then it's fine. If it were up to me I'd stop the power scaling near Wolf at the very least, anyone above him should be limited or banned because they have way too many things going for them for so little/no weakness.
@@thunderd7904 Now I understand why so many people got mad at my suggestion, I'm not saying we keep cutting till we get to bottom 5, I'm saying cut the absurd fighters and the new top 5 which are strong high tier fighters that aren't oppressive to the majority of the rest of the cast should stay there. Like again, Wolf, or Mario are a sweet spot, while Pikachu, Olimar, and Peach are just difficult enough to be usable because you need heavy execution to even get that far with them.
@@StrikerElite923 So you're essentially we should decrease the power gap among fighters. Ok, I can see that, but I don't think banning or nerfing is the right way to do it. It's always better to give more options to those with limited options than to take away options from those with more options. No one is happy when their character gets nerfed, but everyone gets happy when they're buffed. Therefore, even though it's technically an indirect nerf to everyone else when another character gets a buff, 99% of the time, buffs are favorable to nerfs.

@@novaaze1975 well it’s kind of one in the same since the 300% limit was introduced to prevent stalling
The fact that hero never got banned is genuinely dumbfounding to me. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE hero, but he has no place in a competitive format.
Bro why you put your school essay about greninja here
@@judemyervector
Ong, but I am not upset about it
So in short everyone back then was just whining.
Maybe. The game was still new and unoptimised so people hadn’t quite figured out the matchup or the game for that matter. There were even more characters who were considered top tier back then who absolutely weren’t (even less so than Greninja) such as Yoshi and Little Mac. It’s just what happens when a game is new.
From melee to ultimate: most broken characters
Melee: shiek
Brawl: Meta knight
WiiU/3DS: Bayonetta
Ultimate: Steve

Gotta add smash 4 miis to that list the first smash characters to be widely banned. And were heavily restricted in brackets they were allowed in (1111 medium mii only).
It's a good thing i dislike the competitive scene entirely due to bullying I've suffered.
damn sorry to hear that that's cringe
@Dragonfruit Thanks. I just hate the competitive scene because they take it way too seriously and complain about every single thing. "Use this character!" Don't use that character!" "You're supposed to follow these rules." Sakurai specifically gave every stage a battlefield or Final Destination form yet they ignore it and complain.
I really disliked it just because none of the characters I actually liked were anything but low to bottom tier.
I’m a principled DK main, that doesn’t let you get far.

Yknow every time I see talks about banning Steve over phantom mlg I notice a distinct lack of the bug outside of training mode
2:18
I didn't know the Phantom MLG Steve and I wouldn't be disqualified because I only use some block plus fake attacks to annoy the opponent.
Wasn’t the real reason for the hero ban because of the language barrier of needing to read?
Steve can literally carry a whole shulker-filled inventory of 64 stacked blue ice(which is 81 buckets of water, which a bucket of water is basically almost infinite, so 64x27x81) with netherite armor equipped. and with his midair block placing ability steve would be just super op

Steve doesn't feel like he's nearly as bad of an issue as smash 4 bayo or brawl meta night. He's annoying, he's slippery, and he has some game breaking glitch but then just give him the ice climber treatment and ban that one tech.
It feels like he isnt as bad because hes nowhere near the same level. It's just smash ultimate is full of idiots.
It’s too hard for tournaments to manage pmlg, also it was easy the ban him since he sucks to watch in competitive play.
Firstly, the video literally explained right at the start that it was nigh impossible to enforce, as EVERY tournament would have to pour hours into reviewing the footage of every Steve match just to see if he used the tech during it or not. Secondly, Steve is 100% on par with B4yo and 🅱️etaknight in his own unique way. B4yo made every interaction a death trap, as a single stray hit could lead to a 0 to death and Witch Time made it far too dangerous to attack as she could get a free 0 to death. 🅱️era knight was overpowered because he could completely circumvent the game’s clumsy mechanics (chaingrabbing, tripping) while excelling at every facet of regular gameplay, such as a perfect recovery, massive amount of jumps, a sword that outranged MARTH, etc. etc. Steve just doesn’t play the game. He can create new platforms to gain the high ground, build nooks to turtle, hit the opponent with a lighting fast hitgrab/tatsu that can take them straight to the blast zone, deal massive amounts of damage with the right tools, perform setplay with TNT that ALSO covers nearly all ledge options BY ITSELF, gain combo extensions using blocks, combo other people across the stage, has a recovery that makes 🅱️etaknight look like Little Mac, and to top it all off he violates the two sacred rules of Keepaway characters;
1. Do not have a limitless supply of the resource that allows Keepaways to retreat safely (blocks, minecarts, etc.)
2. Do not give them a passive win condition (diamonds). Steve 100% deserved to be banned even without his glitches, as every match would devolve into horrid Steve mirror matches, where at least B4yo and 🅱️etaknight are entertaining, Steve is downright mind numbing.

"Recovery that makes Meta Knight look like Little Mac"
The recovery in question: Side-B into Up-B.
Why are my mains in the thumbnail
of course steve is broken, he can literally carry TONS of STATUES of LIBBERTIES
Great video overall, although I do have a few corrections to make, especially regarding Cloud in doubles:
Double Cloud was actually nowhere near the best team composition with the character, since both of them still had the exploitable weakness of their recovery.
Just thought it was worth pointing out
Again, not trying to be overly negative or anything, cause this is still a really well done video. Just wanted to correct a few of the mistakes I noticed

Luigi in ultimate: let me introduce myself
Bayo is either one of the best high tiers or one of the worst top tiers, similar to Terry imo. Her weaknesses technically exist but she has so many unique options that they don’t matter. Her landing lag is often a non issue since she can use her specials to retreat to ledge or witch time to cancel all lag and kill YOU for trying to punish her. Her kill power as you said is actually not bad, and even if she’s not killing you until 180%, she got most of that damage off of two combos. She’s tall and light but has one of the best disadvantage states in the game, so abusing that is not easy.
They better nerf pyra and mythra, besides the only reason why they are good is cuz they’re the same character

Is it possible to ban a character in super smash on your own account?

There are some top tiers that are fine like Pikachu because he is hard to use, but most of the time I view high tiers as the standard like the A tier section, then S tiers are the ones that overly dominate the game.
