big fan of these longer buying alternatives sections. Not only for buying guides, but also because it gives points of reference to other shoes that we may have run in for comparison
I feel like it helps with the pacing and just gives a moment to take a breath before moving on to the next section. I didn't know if it would feel awkward though, so I'm glad you enjoy it
I tried on both the Monster and the Eclipse in January and you just described perfectly how I felt about them! I would wear the Monster as a casual, comfortable shoes, whereas I bought the Eclipse (my option) as an easy run shoe. I honestly prefered the Eclipse, even considering that "softness" feeling. Great vid, Mr. Kofuzi, as always! Have a great one, everybody!
The cloudeclipse is comfortable straight out of the box, I tried these because my hoka Clifton’s are tight in the toe box for me and the wide version is too wide. I am telling you I wasn’t a fan of the on shoe from a look’s perspective until I tried the eclipse. The triangle clouds look better to me but these shoes are plush springy have a good rocker feel under foot they lock down nicely and I am able to walk or run easier then any hoka I’ve tried previously. They are stable feel lighter than they weigh and look awesome. Give them a try and hope you like them too.
I'm a new runner. I've done a few 5ks years ago. A 10k and a 15k. Just getting back into it and I'm obsessed. I'm overweight and looking for some shoes. Going to check out more of your videos. SUBSCRIBED!
Same, being 6'0 200 pounds doing hybrid training and wanting to stay as big as possible but also running marathons tough to find shoes that feel good for me. Most running shoes are for those who are 150 pounds and less.
I didn’t mean to spend so much on a pair of shoes but once I tried them on, I had to 😂 They feel great! Super comfortable through the whole HM last weekend. Thanks for the review as always 😊
Picked up these yesterday at a discount from REI dividend money. The bigger toebox to v1 is all the reason I need. Will bounce back and forth between these and cloudeclipse for easy runs for a while.
I kinda like the CM2 more than the Eclipse. Not something I expected but I preferred the intersection of firmness and squishiness that On achieved here.
Bought them and used them for 1 week at Paris. Paris is massive big and with bad terain, many bad roads anomalies and also many brick roads.I walked inside a week and runned about in total 86.319 steps counts so i believe i had a huge experience with them. For me its the best walking or running shoe by far.I have used many top shoes from almost every brand. But this one its the King . Amazing in every single terain you will not feel a thing under your foot. Great for walking or running - excellent control solid stability. Materials looking very good quality. Even with rain my feet stayed dry. They are not big cause they usually looks big in the videos or photos and surely they are NOT heavy! Everything that you expecting from a running or walking shoe Cloudmonster 2 delivers it to the max.
I had an opportunity to shortly test On shoes before Barcelona Marathon. Actually it was few-minutes-long run. But it gave me some idea how the shoes make me feel. I tried Cloudmonster 2 and the carbon plated model - Cloudboom Echo 3. Both were surprisingly comfortable from the very first moment. I came there in my NB Fresh Foam More V4. Cloudmonster wasn't that soft, it was rather similar to Triumph 20 - more bouncy, responsive. And I could feel it is lighter than NB. I will consider both On models after my Triumph 20 and Adidas Pro 3. Though the prices are crazy, comparing to my current shoes (I bought Saucony for about 75$ and Adidas for about 180$).
Thanks for making this as always, my guy. I'm about to step up my game since I've been running so much more so I'm really enjoying the flow of reviews and content. Starting to get a lot more comfortable with the lingo and understand things beyond, "oh that looks good"
For me personally, the biggest hurdle against me buying an On shoe is the opportunity cost of NOT choosing another shoe. There are just so many other competing options ahead of them (for me) in performance, value, or both simultaneously. I'm just not one to prioritize form over function.
I have been hearing how the TYR Valkyrie Elite Carbon are built for runners who are bigger and heavier. Might be a good pairing for as a race shoe as well? Looking forward to your reviews on those.
Great video! What would you recommend for like 5 days of walking in Walt Disney world? Im thinking of getting the cloud monster 2. Im not really a runner, 235lbs/5"10. Thanks!
I really liked the Cloudmonster 1 but they wore down very quickly for me. I noticed a drop off after about 250 miles and the rubber on the bottom deteriorated quickly. I still love wearing them casually but would switch to the cloudeclipse for my next ON running shoe
The Cloudmonster is my daily trainer comfort shoe. I like that it is also very comfy with my wide feet. It works for me. I am trying to use it in the gym only because I fear to scrub the holes one day.
I've had my Cloudmonster 1s for a few months now and they only have about 150 miles in them and I have a hole on my right foot near the ball of my foot. It's so strange but I hope it doesn't get any worse! I've really enjoyed these shoes and considered another type of Ons. I do think the outsole wears way too quickly for this shoe and there are other ones similar to the Cloudmonster. I came from the Cloudeclipse video and both these reviews are great!!
I own the CloudMonster 1... didn't see too big of a difference to upgrade thanks for the confirmation! Also - I think these feel too bulky\heavy albeit VERY comfortable!
I will have to try it in a store to feel it for myself, the stability. I got the Cloud Eclipse and the Cloud Stratus 3, and while the Eclipse is super stable and bouncy, the Stratus ( mini monster) is not bouncy and it is a bit unstable for my overpronation. But I prefer the soft cushioning of the Stratus vs the Eclipse .... just needed it to be a bot more stable and that is why I'm interested on trying the Monster 2 .
What are your thoughts on the cloudmonster 2 vs triumph 21 as an everyday shoe for marathon training. Looking for something to pick up the pace every now and then, but general long run use. Have a very wide, flat foot so generally fit into 2e.
Question: several years ago when I tried out an On shoe, the plastic speed board kept clipping my ankle and cutting it open while changing directions because it hung over the edge of the shoe, does this happen to you? Perfect straight line running would be fine, jump a curb, instant PAIN
The interesting thing is that the Cloudmonster is intended to be marketed as more on an energy return foward rolling responsive shoe, vs the Cloudeclipse where that is meant for absorption and comfort.
I found the same. I was able to return the Eclipse after doing 60km. I found it sludgy and energy sapping, strangely without feeling overly soft. I find the Cloudmonster much more responsive and fun to run in even though I mainly bought it as a casual shoe. The Eclipse was sort crashy and clunky, whereas the Cloudmonster has a nice roll to it. I don't find the speedboard makes the shoe firm. It just seems to provide a nice stable platform for your foot and the compression happens underneath. I actually find it very soft as a walking shoe.
Too heavy and slow for my taste, and I fall solidly into the newer speedboardless camp (Cloudsurfer 7 for me), but I'm glad this exists for our heavier and taller running partners. I also feel like On shoes, in general, seem to favor heel strikers and really want you to use the entire foot strike to get more bounce. This was especially true for the older speedboard design, but is also somewhat true for the newer design. Finally, I see that feedback from your comment section has maybe softened your opinion of the not-a-Boston-12. 😁
I’m wearing the Cloudsurfer on the TM while listening to this and reading your comment. I love this shoe for recovery runs in particular but it’s a great all around shoe.
if you have a wide foot, i thought cloud monster 2's feel much better than the originals. you might have to go a half size up but otherwise i found they we're a much more comfortable fit.
@kofuzi yeah I was only asking because I'm around 200lbs...was just wondering what you consider bigger and if the shoe would work for me. (Boston or Eclispe) I don't know for sure but I assume you're on the lighter side.
I tested them yesterday. I liked everything about them especially the way they looked even the way the midsole felt and how the shoe made me want to move forward with every step. It was just way too baggy. The Surfer is still the best On Cloud running shoe for me. The Eclipse felt a tad too roomy also not wide and not long, just not the right overall fit.
"on sent me these shoes for the purpose of review" instead of "this is a pair of shoes that On sent me for the purpose of review" ???? Is this is a signal to say that you are in danger??
When I think about the comfort and joy I get from my New Balance 1080V13 and consider the fact that these shoes almost cost the same I come to the conclusion that On are pissing atheis customers off.
My feet after just a mile in these = 🤬 That being said, some shoe brands just don’t fit certain feet well. These feel incredibly comfortable just walking in and quickly became my morning dog walk shoes. For running, this brand would need to send me a free pair of whatever their future new shoes are to even try running in them.
On just doesn't do it for me. The reviews are always mixed and the price point keeps me from trying them out. Though, I'm probably not their target audience for these very reasons.
I work at a running store and I can't stand On. The company is so pretentious. Their shoes are on average $10-15 higher than the competition. The Ghost Max and NB More v4 are shoes that are $30 less than this hunk of garbage, AND they'll last the wearer longer because they have more foam! I think I sell this shoe primarily to customers who, comfort-wise, would be just as happy with any other shoe, but they're perhaps overly concerned with the way their shoes look. (Some people think running shoes are ugly).
Depends "On" the shoe. My Cloudflow 3 in Lake/Flare is one of the prettier shoes I own. My Cloudventure 2 in Twilight/Midnight (that I put red shoelaces on) also never fails to get compliments.

The cloud monsters were pretty tight for me around the toe box. Really disappointed that they don’t have Wide option.
Quick question. How would you rate the Brooks Hyperion as a faster workouts pairing option, instead of the Hyperion Max?
I would think that a Cloudmonster lover would prefer the extra stack height of the max. But the regular Hyperion is also quite good.
