- This is the Cloudmonster Hyper. It’s taller than the also new Cloudmonster 2, it removes the speedboard entirely, and introduces Pebax as part of the midsole. But it also comes at a hefty $220 price. Is it worth it? It’s time to lace up the Cloudmonster Hyper and take it for a run.

Thanks Mike for explaining what many others have not: the Pebax area does extend to the back, albeit in a thinner volume and hidden from view because of the other foam blocking it. Good review!

When I got fit a few months ago, they had me try a cloudmonster 2 and it was just so uncomfortable. Hard to imagine this one is much different. It felt like running with cinder blocks on my feet. As always, a perfect and concise review, Mike.

It's actually quite different
I know this review isn’t about the Puma Deviate Nitro 2, but since you mentioned them at the end, I have to say it’s an incredible shoe which I’d recommend to anyone. I bought them yesterday and I’m amazed at how good they are. They felt like I was putting in way less effort than usual but could still go fairly quick!
To me the version 3 thats release in july are even more comfy …but yah it is

I agree completely. I have around 200km with Puma deviate nitro 2, and I absolutelly love them.

Agree with you 💯 with all your points. I ran the London Marathon in the Hype Monster and it did bottom out. The price is a bit much and I hope the price drops as somepoint.

Great review! Exactly how I felt about the shoe. On Running is doing a lot of things right: leaning heavily into pro sports, embedding themselves in local communities and hosting great events. They also have a great set of super shoes coming soon that I am really excited about.
I do not, however, get their running shoe line up. Most of their shoes are just some kind of variation of a daily trainer. Some have lower and some have higher stack heights, but with the exception for the Cloudboom Echo they are all slowish shoes serving a similar purpose. For example, how are the Cloudeclipse, the Cloudmonster, the Cloudonster 2, the Cloudmosnter Hyper and the Cloudsurfer different from one another?

Mike - how do you think this will stack up against the Superblast 2? They both seem about the same price. I remember when Superblast started at $220 but dropped to $200 and thinks the 2 may start at $220.
So they took features out of the Monster and then raised the price up by $40's. Yep, that makes a lot of sense. They should have gotten ride of the Clouds in the front and added the Speedbaord to the front.

How is the fit though? I think the Cloudsurfer fits perfectly, but the Eclipse is way too baggy and loose. I took a winger on the Cloudsurfer trail and it's also pretty loosy-goosie in the upper. I feel like On needs to dial in their fit across the lineup to avoid poor fit confusion.

Speaking of. My DN2s are finally starting to fade at 250 miles+. I was hoping the Nitro infusion would make the PEBA last a bit longer. It was an irrational hope, I guess. On the bright side, it means my B12s are finally seeing some more love! Funny thing is that (if I were shady) I could probably sell the deadish DN2s and the new owner would think they're practically new based on looks. Only I'd know the truth. And they'd be left with a poor impression of a shoe everyone else raves about.

I recommend everyone try the ON Trail Cloudsurfer. I enjoyed the regular Cloudsurfer but even on the sidewalk liked the trail version more. It’s normally priced as a trainer and is more fun on the road (to me) than the regular Cloudsurfer. I didn’t buy it but seriously considered it when buying my most recent new trainer. My running store staff made me try bc they really like it as a road shoe in addition to non-technical trail shoe.
It feels like at this point On will put clouds in all their models as a branding thing rather than because it makes for a better shoe. They have always looked more like a gimmick to me.
Pretty sure that On shoes only get reviewed if they get sent to the Shoetuber and that says something to me. Can't quite work out what.
Well, I bit the bait. I just had to have them, the Hyper, I am not sorry as I love them. You're right, tricky marketing timing.
But on the plus side, you have a shoe that you love.

@@kofuzi I have the Nike zoom fly% and they bother my right foot after 2-3 miles. So I wanted to ask if I could use foot soles or if you ever come across someone with that issue? My right foot is arched and left is more flat 😓

No design gimmicks, no foam sandwiches; just give all pebax from heal to toe, 30-33mm max, zero drop, no arch support - that's my dream shoe. However, shoe companies gotta make sales every year, so for now it's gimmicks and ridiculous stacks. I'll keep dreaming 😊

Besides personal preferences, I dunno how I'd recommend this over the Eclipse.
It's not designed to go fast or any sort of pickup. So not sure why you're complaining that a hefty recovery shoes is doing what it's meant to do and feels off when you try to use it otherwise.

Love the shirt. 🇰🇷 Tae Kwon Ko! The Cloudsurfer 7 is the only On shoe I regularly use because it gives me what I consider to be an honest workout without cheating with plates or illegal stack height. Just the right amount of cushion too. I do wonder how much longer it will be before On puts out a shoe with NO cloud pockets whatsoever? They broke free of their institutional thinking on the speedboard. Why not come down from the clouds and put both feet back on the ground? I think it was wise for them to stagger the release with Monster v2. They didn't want to cannibalize their own sales.

as a beginner, i should have done more research before buying this model, should have sticked with asics nimbus 26 or ON cloudeclipse. 2 out of 2 vids with almost the same review.
got this shoe when it just released and absolutely love it, I am flatfooted and the fit is great for my wide feet and it’s very stable. im a relatively mid-heavier weight runner (70-72kgs) and i found these just the right softness as i feel some shoes bottom out. didnt look at the price when i bought it though, in hindsight 220 is too much for a daily trainer lol

You know I've always had a soft spot for On and the great aesthetics design so I've justified paying bit more and getting a great looking sneaker that's also an okay running shoe,
But $220 is no longer justifiable
That's now super shoe territory, shoes that are so so much more than this shoe could ever be.
At this price point it's really nothing but a gimmick shoe, jumping on the PEBA hype waggon with nothing much to show for it,
This one is for On fanboys and Hypebeasts only who don't know any better.
Sounds overpriced for an easy+/recovery shoe. Too bad because it seems like it’s a good shoe for that category but there are cheaper options that can fill that same role.
Not worth the price, tapered toe box and unstable heel make this a slow turnover. Cloudmonster 2 is better
