  • Bought this lock as we keep forgetting to lock the door in a rush or to take our door keys. The only door lock that detects the door is closed AND auto locks itself with the new DoorSense magnetic sensor!

    I guess bashing your door frame could be a consideration, but I have a Gen 2 smart lock and the worst thing is the app reporting the door is locked, but coming home to find the door open because it locked when the door wasn't closed properly....... I think that is more important :). This is a great video even now in 2023 as there are a lot of Gen 3 locks still available new, and in my opinion the Gen 3 is a better option than the Gen 4. The standard Gen 3 has a more traditional look, and the battery life is so much longer than the Gen 4. Not to mention Gen 3 uses standard AA batteries where the Gen 4 uses a more expensive battery type.

    Bought this version to add to my existing smart home setup as I primarily use HomeKit and Alexa. Just wanna make it clear to everyone interested in this. HomeKit will only work while connected to the same network. If you’re away from home you will need a home hub (Apple TV 4K or an iPad running the latest software that lives at home at all times.) I have an Apple TV 3rd Gen and was not aware that August is not compatible with it while trying to use it remotely. While everything else in my home works with the 3rd Gen hub, the august lock does not per the customer service agent I recently spoke to. I am only able to control the lock remotely via the the August app as of right now. Now Im forced to be in the market of upgrading to the newest Apple TV 4K if I want to control the lock via Siri remotely.

    Do you have to install Doorsense for the lock to work, or is Doorsense just a bonus feature?

    • @Tygerdan1
      @Tygerdan1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doorsense is only optional and is a bonus to lock the door ONLY when the door is fully closed and to check the status if the door is open, closed or ajar from the app if you're within Bluetooth distance, but it works best with the August Connect Wi-Fi bridge so you can check the door status anywhere in the world. For me the Doorsense works more reliably when you take out the magnet and drill a hole in the door frame and install the magnet insidecfacing the lock than just outside in the vid like it's too far to detect the magnet.

    The auto lock feature is great, however, DO NOT get out of the house without your phone or a key! Otherwise the auto lock feature can LOCK YOU OUT of your own home! This has been solved in cars by detecting if the FOB is inside of the car, you cannot lock the car manually to avoid locking yourself out. August will have to detect the phone being outside, before it locks the door, to avoid locking you out of the house, or always carry a key with you, just in case!

      I recommend Autolock if you have a backup entryway like a garage door with a keypad. I'll be in trouble if I don't have my phone AND the power goes out.

    Do they make any smart door locks that just work with a regular door knob I don’t have a deadbolt lock on my door ? It just locks with the knob.

    • @Tygerdan1
      @Tygerdan1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope it requires an existing deadbolt on the outside or you can buy one from August website and drill a hole through your door to screw the smart lock from behind.

    Are you sure that Alexa cannot issue lock and unlock commands?
    I’ve seen other videos on TH-cam where Alexa can lock and unlock the system.

      To unlock the door with alexa you will need the bridge

    I received the August Smart Lock 3rd gen (Oval shaped one) for Christmas. Will it integrate with SmartThings if I purchase the August Connect WFI unit?

    • @Tygerdan1
      @Tygerdan1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far NO with the August Connect hub. Some people say SmartThings works with the more expensive August Pro (round) lock as it has Z-Wave built in.

    question. in regards to the autolock feature, if i have enabled it and lets say is set to lock in 30 seconds and I go outside but leave my phones and my keys inside.... that means im locked out? does the smartlock knows that the phone is inside instead of outside and remain unlocked? Also what rule override the locking when i close the door and go outside or the unlocking when im in the area of the house

    • @Tygerdan1
      @Tygerdan1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you only have one main door to your house I would NOT set it for 30 seconds but for 5 minutes to give yourself time to get back in if you forgot your phone or keys. I have a backup garage door with a keypad so I still don't need a key anyways.

    Man that motor is loud, I'm getting mine today, might bother me, we'll see

      I think it sound like a toy radio car with the servos spinning. I heard the Schladge Connect/Sense locks are even louder? Might get one for the interior door to the garage.

      It will give a notification about 3 weeks of battery left. I now have the Yale Assure Lock with keypad with August app.

    Does it have a log of when the door was unlocked???

    • @Tygerdan1
      @Tygerdan1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it keeps an activity log whenever the door is open/closed, is locked/unlocked manually, automatically or by a phone user. Here's an example: pbs.twimg.com/media/CpIM9euUEAAM9Lq.jpg

      The 3rd Gen lock should work in US and Canada according to August. You can order direct from August to ship to you up there. support.august.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2329296-ordering-august-outside-north-america?b_id=10917

    Avoiding HomeKIt is like trying to outsmart tsunami. Same with limiting remote connection to proprietary hub. "Good" way to kill a product 👍

    • @Tygerdan1
      @Tygerdan1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya maybe in the future gen locks since August got bought out by Assa Abloy, the world's largest lock company! The thing with HomeKit is the "$20-$30 Apple cost" to include the HomeKit chip inside making it already too expensive to buy. $150 is the sweet spot. The plug in proprietary hub is needed for for the internet connection part so it doesn't drain the 4 AA batteries and keep the compact size of the 3rd gen lock without putting an internal "hub" like the HUGE Schlage Sense locks. Their instruction says if you connect them to the Internet like the Samsung Smartthings hub they will get reduced battery life. That's why I'm fine to walk up 20ft from the door to open it.

    This lock sucks and is completely unreliable. It will barely function 50% of the time. I've had my lock for a month now, and it stopped auto unlocking after only a week of use.
