The August 4th Generation Smart Lock Is Terrible!

  • After my Schlage Sense lock broke earlier this year I decided to do some research and upgrade. What did I pick??? - the August Smart Lock. Very much a bad decision on my part and I have been kicking myself for several months. I had the Sense lock for a few years and never really had any issues - something internally broke is the only reason for the change. I am pretty sure that the reason for the break is that the latch was pretty tight when locking and eventually the mechanism inside the Sense gave up. I chiseled out and filed the replacement plate and now the latch is smooth like butter. Definitely recommend the Schlage Sense Smart lock if you want something that works on HomeKit and just about everything else.

    Your real issue is having the small side window next to your deadbolt. A burglar would pop that single pane of glass and unlock the deadbolt in about 5 seconds. If you are going to keep the windows then you need a double key deadbolt.

    You're video and comments are right on the money. I also have this lock and it eats batteries faster than a rabbit in a lettuce patch. I've tracked the usage and it consistently wants new batteries about every 40-45 days. I've been able to buy the CR123 batteries on Amazon in multi-packs to get the price down to about $2.41/ea. But when you have to change the batteries every 40 days (that's nine times in a year) even at $2.41/each (times two batteries per change) you're spending over $43.00 + a year in batteries. And in case someone reads this and asks "how many times do you lock and unlock the door every day?" Well I'm here to tell you that I use the app maybe once a day to check the status. The unit is not set to auto lock or unlock. I manually lock and unlock this thing. I wanted to see if just having the batteries in the unit drained as quickly as normal use. Answer: yes.
    Batteries aren't the only problem, like you my lock suffers from going offline frequently. Additionally, the "Door Sense" feature stopped working and I can't get it to work again. After resetting the lock to factory defaults and starting from scratch, the lock goes in to a fit where it looks like it's trying to lock but just makes noise and rotates back and forth about an 1/8 of an inch. Very disappointing for a device that costs so much.
    I'm going to take out the batteries and just use it as a typical deadbolt for now. Maybe there's a hack out there where you can connect a 6-volt DC power supply while using "dummy" batteries in the slots.
    If anyone is thinking of buying a smart lock, skip this one.

      There are a number of rechargeable CR123a battery options available. Eneloop usually makes the best.

    Thanks for the posting. I have purchased on 05/15/22 and have issues first week. Planning to return the august 4 gen.
    It is not working it supposed to, not relatable, Bluetooth is disabled it self, it take over 5-7 sec standing in the front of the door until it unlocks, Apple Watch does not unlock the door, HomePod mini via Siri unlocks fine, but does not lock the door advising to use the phone. Has to be calibrated after accidentally someone locks or unlocks the door manually

    You are right. This lock completely sucks. Classic example of poorly designed tech being pushed out the door too soon. I wrote tech support, but have had no luck with any kind of response. Avoid this company.

  • @Peaceistheway
    @Peaceistheway 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I share your sentiment. I had to get a replacement sent out and it started having same trouble after 6months! Basically the deadbolt doesn't completely turn anymore, so it will think the door is unlocked but you can't open the door! Calibration feature in the app does not fix the problem either. Both locks failed between 6-8 months!

    That's the reason why I bought the August Smart Lock Pro (3th generation) it uses AA batteries and comes with the Wi-Fi bridge separately which makes it more stable since you have to plug it directly to the outlet. So far so good.

    • @AirstreamNerds
      @AirstreamNerds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a good solution if you want to keep the August lock...I would think that if they put out a new model that it would be "improved" over the old one. Thanks for the comment!

    Does Schlage work with HomeKit? I have the August 4th gen smart lock still in the box. I am returning it because if you have to replace battery every month then it defeats the purpose of having a lock. even three months is not enough. Still searching for a good Homekit smart luck even if it requires a hub

    I have 2 August gen3 locks with bridges on my office building. I was wondering how long batteries last with gen4 since wifi is direct to the lock now and you have proved exactly what I thought....not long. I had Arlo cameras that used those 123 batteries and they claimed they would last a year. Right, maybe if the camera was turned off. They lasted a 30-60 days tops and at $30 a pop per camera (4 batteries each). Thanks to your video, I will stay with Gen3, they work great. I'm able to monitor and operate from anywhere in the world. Do the Schlage Sense locks allow monitoring and operation remotely via wifi? Can they be set up to automatically lock at a certain time every night? August does not have that auto lock capability.

    • @AirstreamNerds
      @AirstreamNerds  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes the Schlage locks work remotely and I can put them on a schedule since they are Homekit compatible (as well as I believe through the Schlage app)

    Had all the same issues with batteries, discharging within days from new, August replaced the lock and same happened with the replacement - similar WIFI connectivity issues with router less than 3 ft from lock and everything else was connecting fine (also use Eero). August lock went in the trash about 4 months ago.

    I am so disappointed too. I had the same issues as you (just not as often) i replace the batteries every 2 or 3 months. It disconnects from the wifi. Now when I unlock it is doing trying to either fully unlock or lock itself back for 10-15 seconds and then gives up (no error codes/notification/red light) I am also an IT (10+ years of experience). I tried calibrating it but after doing everything it ask me to do it stays at the calibrating loading process with no end. I think I will end up switching to the one u got. How is it working for you so far? Would you recommend it?

    Ahhh hahaha!! I feel your pain bro!! I bought a 3rd Gen August smart 🔐 about 2 - 3 years ago & have had NOTHING BUT NUCKING FUTS problems out of it. Batteries ALWAYS dead, long connectivity times with Bluetooth, Z wave functionality unpairing on its own! 1st the connect module crapped out... no biggie, I said, I have Smartthings wifi I'll just connect it to zwave & call it a day! I have to literally take out a battery & put it back in to get it to react to either (Smartthings zwave or August bluetooth) app! I bought a sledgehammer just for when I replace it.. Just wanted to let you know it's not just you, this lock is a CRAP sandwich!! Have a good day sir.
    P.S. I hope u recorded breaking the August smart lock so u could enjoy the moment again & again..

    Firstly, sorry to revive an older video that you seem to have resolved. I have the same August Wifi lock. But i've had minimal problems with it. Batteries is the main complaint I have with this model of August lock. Not saying I haven't had any issues, but very minimal. I had the original gen 1 one as well. I had all kinds of trouble with that one. I know quite a few folks that have these had some have mountains of issues and some don't. Bottom line is that I feel like it's luck of the draw. I am always on the look for products that will integrate together. Right now, I would like for all the smart devices I have to be able to integrate with my Ring security system and Homekit. While August does integrate with homekit, it doesn't with Ring. I've recently seen a relatively new lock on the market called Level Lock. It is a pure bluetooth lock though and won't integrate with Alexa or Google at this time. But it will integrate with Homekit and if you have a home hub, you can use the lock basically like August and it will integrate with the Ring security system so I am seriously considering replacing My August locks with the Level Locks. My goal is to be able to only have one app to control all my smart devices and I feel this is a really good start.

    I still think the Standard Gen 3 August Smartlock, with it's more traditional design, is the best looking one and also the best with functionality. USes standard AA batteries, battery life is good, better than Gen 4, and it is obvious how to lock and unlock it. I know it still has to use the Connect Bridge to get remote functionality, but it just looks good and the bluetooth works so much better than the Gen 4 with the WiFi built in. I think the WiFi built in chews up the battery quickly and interferes badly with the Bluetooth.

  • @bluemoves

    I monitor the uptime on all the wifi devices on my network with an app and even though the August lock is the closest wifi device it is up only 67% of the time and is the worst of all my devices. That is why it eats batteries like crazy too. Kinda like when your phone is constantly trying to connect to wifi while you are flying on a plane. Cheap wifi adapter in these devices translate to this. There is no reason that the size of battery should drain this fast or that a new IoT device at this time should have these kinds of wifi issues. Having bluetooth option is nice but you have to be close to it and contributes to the battery drain.

    Hmmm... And I haven't had a single problem with my August lock since I bought my first one, the Gen 2 one... and the Gen 4 one. Not one problem. Don't know what to tell ya, but 1st, that 6 pro, isnt' 5 feet. It's more like 10. Not that that should make a difference, but that Apple hub is also like 15 feet away... again, not that that should make a difference either. But, if you're going to embellish and distort something as simple as distances, I can only assume you're doing the same with that August lock, given that my experience with August is exactly 100% the opposite. So... don't know what to tell ya.

    It's definitely your wifi... it needs to be 2.4 ... Not 5 or 6ghz etc... the battery is dying fast because it was struggling to connect and disconnect between your phones bluetooth and wifi.. which it wasn't compatible with..

    • @AirstreamNerds
      @AirstreamNerds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wifi is fine and connects at 2.4Ghz and if you watched the video you will see is definitely close enough to the device. why not just buy a 4 pack of rechargeable batteries? They are ~$40 and you can just keep switching it out. 🤔

I never even get low battery notifications. I have gotten the run around from support since day 1 and now it's out of warranty and they won't do anything about it. All they do is blame me. Today they said my app was out of date. I literally uninstalled it and downloaded it again from the Google Play Store. They still say it's out of date. Well what am I supposed to do about that?
