Which drone should you buy in 2021?? Tony Northrup reviews the new Mavic 3 for video quality, still image quality, battery life, speed, and more. It has some exciting benefits and some HUGE drawbacks - like the outrageous $2,200 price! Hint: the Hasselblad camera isn't.

dude! mavic 3 does have and they do always work the side sensors! the info is from mavic 2! its an error in description! look at the bottom,it says mavic 2!!!

My bad! Thanks for pointing out that error. I've edited it out of the video (hence the weird jump cut you'll now see at 6:33) and I'll pin this comment so others can see the correction.

BTW I'm really glad to see this! I think that'll push me over the edge and I'll keep the Mavic 3 now. Obviously I'm still a bit pissed that DJI mislead about side obstacle avoidance capabilities in the past :D.

It’s always bothered me that reviewers call out “Hasselblad” as if there is anything special about it compared to the competition. Today Hasselblad a small company of a few dozen people and is fully owned by DJI. The image sensor, from what I can tell, is Sony. It’s a DJI camera with a Sony sensor. Thank you for calling this out!

    • @LurkerPatrol5

Hasselblad's use sony sensors and have so for the past several years.

    • @Miketothek666
      @Miketothek666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They use hasselblad color science. They aren't using hasselblad lenses and hasselblad uses a Sony built sensor which they then apply their color science to the same way canon and Nikon do. They're all Sony sensors minus the Fuji medium format sensors. Those are fuji.

As a pro who principally uses my drone for still nature photog the Mavic 3 has a few advantages. Longer battery and 2x rate of ascent and descent. Ergo I end up with twice the shooting time in many situations where I'm doing a long flight to reach remote spots. I've found with the smart controller, the range is much better. The improved dynamic range, lower noise and low light performance of the main camera sensor are winners also. Having the camera more aft in the drone allows me to angle the lens up without getting the props in my frame. Bottom line: Expensive as hell, don't like spending the money...but helping me produce better stills. For most folks, however, save your $$$$.

Glad to see your comment along with the Northrup review. I'm shooting architectural

    • @patc2515
      @patc2515 ปีที่แล้ว

I disagree with the ending. everything about the mavic 3 is an improvement over the previous models. if you want speed, aggressive wind cutting, blazing fast ascending and depending, incredible video and photo quality, noticeably improved battery duration per charge, and more sensors for flying in more difficult places, you will not be willing to go back after flying the mavic 3. if someone is so strapped on budget that they are making this decision based purely on cost, its probably best to invest in a budgeting app instead and buy the better machine later when it's been out a little longer. I have the air 2s and the mavic 3 and it's honestly much more night and day in every noticeable way and at this point, why would I even pick the air 2 s? I won't. I don't. night as well sell it now tbh

@@ArkansasRay @Yahav hey man I'm no expert just a video/ film guy. But say you got the 3 for work capabilities you might need in the future ... Drones deprecate so fast that by the time that future comes you might be able to upgrade for what you saved by getting just what you need now. Also drones are surprisingly sturdy, but I've almost lost mine 4 times this year trying to get the best shot. Would suck to replace an expensive drone with extra specs that you were on the fence about. Good luck :) whatever you choose it'll up your production value a tonne!

The Mavic 2 was a big improvement, but I don't think the image quality was on par with the Phantom 4. Looking at the Mavic 3 footage, it doesn't seem that it has come all that far. Terrific comparison and choice of what matters, such as props/prop shadows in the shots - first reviewer to spot this and put value on it. Variable aperture means ND filters only in extreme scenarios. I get perhaps 20% better range using the RC Pro vs the RC-N1 that they ship with all but the Cine model. DJI announced an RC Pro bundle last week. Thanks!

I have been using drones since 2018. Started with P4PRO.V2. Have every dji drone since then except Mavic 3. I'm not a professional, but the drone I find throwing into my bag more often then not is Mini 2. It gives me what I need and is most convenient. However 2022 things will change and I'm finding purpose now for each drone I have. For example P4PRO.V2 I'm gearing up for mapping, while M2P I have invested in an anamorphic lens for it to give it purpose to justify keeping it. The point here bigger and more expensive is not always better. Get what fits your needs. Great video Tony.

I can tell you from experience - Mavic 3 is your choice if you shoot sunsets, dusk, night or any situation where the MFT system is clearly superior over the 1” sensor. In well lit conditions you have to pixel peep to see a difference. It’s not unlike how modern smartphones can compete with high end photographic equipment in the right conditions but will fall apart in challenging conditions. Since drones are always outdoors and generally in well lit environments, the Mini 2 and Air 2s are good choices for most people. As soon as you get to the challenging situations, the Mavic 3 can greatly outshine the rest of the lineup.

@@saramdipm j I agree and well said on most every thing you said. One thing I think is that, although the mini is just fantastic for what it is and does.. It cannot touch the Mavic 2 pro regardless of good lighting. Any videos shot well on TH-cam one can easily see the difference. Air2s it's of course much different and often better then pro 2 on a good day but for me without the aperture you are gambling with your shots. With out the aperture you need faith.

I still use the Inspire 1 Pro with the Olympus 14-48 zoom lens. You really can’t compete with the 4/3 sensor for stills unless you’re flying a 35mm camera. I also use a Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom. I think these are the trifecta right now.

My DJI Mavic 3 (non-cine) received an update yesterday which mentioned time lapse, etc. But I was disappointed when I took it out and the options were still "coming soon". Are there extra steps to use these new modes? Thanks, Tony & Chelsea!

I’m 99% sure he shot the footage in South Eastern Connecticut. I live nearby and I’m pretty sure the lighthouse is off coast in New London.

For $600 more, for sure I will go for the Mavic 3 over the 2 Pro, for the new sensor, bigger tilting range gimbal, and a lot more....

Hey Tony, I have a p4p v2.0 I'm thinking of changing to the mavic 3 pro, what are your thoughts? Thanks

Thanks for the review. A question:
I am looking to get a drone for stills of landscapes.
Flight times, collision avoidance and cost not withstanding what do you think would be the better drone to purchase?

Aside from the USB-C charging, Is there a battery swap option on the Mavic 3 for professional needs? I need something capable of back to back flights.

Coming from a mavic air V1 and P4 pro, the Air 2s Rc Pro flymore combo is the best deal!👍

Awesome video and appreciate your honest reviews. My latest video on my Air2S was spotty and not very smooth when I played it back on my computer. I know it’s not my micro SD card. What else could it be? My 4K footage glitched every 2 seconds. Please help!

Does the magic 3 come with the prop sleeve or was that a separate purchase?

    Interesting video..
I think I'm going to wait until the Magic 3 pro comes out. I'm hoping that they fix all of the issues

Tony, will you make a new mavic 3 video with the latest firmware update? I would like to hear your opinion.

Appreciate your commentary. One thing I have yet to have heard is if the Mavic 3 can handle higher winds than my Mavic 2 Pro. Have you heard anything?

Super helpful review! Saved me some money honestly. It's not worth the upgrade for the work that I do. Upgrading some strobes instead!!!

Hi Tony liked the review and I’m a long term viewer for all your camera gear tips and reviews but however when you started talking about the fstop and sensor size equivs in terms of full frame and especially when you mentioned that the telephoto lens has a f/24 FF equiv sensor and that you would never use it, I lost abit if interest there. I’ve been watching a few TH-cam videos on the Mv3 (I own fpv/mini2) and I personally thought the telephoto camera on the mv3 is excellent (given enough light is present).
Correct me if I’m wrong, that’s the same sensor size as the original mavic pro and the minis and they were perfectly fine for capturing the skies and aerial views. Sometimes it’s not all about the tech and specs I learnt. “As the navy seals say it’s not the weapon but the weapon behind the gun that matters”.
Cheers have a lovely day to both you and Chelsea.

OK, Here is a question for ya. Yesterday while doing a real estate video I crashed (power lines) my mavic pro 2. Now I got to get a new drone. I loved my mavic pro 2. I used it all the time. I use my drone for paid work (Weddings, real estate videos) I was just going to get a mavic Air 2S. I love that USB power plug... lol and the low light of the new Mavic 3 but the price? But what do you think. you said the Mavic pro 2 is obsolete.

Tony, the moiree on the building has much more to do with the respective lighting (reflections of sunlight) than with the sensors. Air 2s: bright sunlight; Mavic 2. moderate sunlight, Mavic 3: no sunlight at all. I actually have assumed that you would know that given you have some experience in photography

Thank you for your video. I am interested in the Magic
Air 2S after watching your TH-cam above. Here are my questions:
    1. Does it have a Performance-based Eligibility with FAA?
    2. Does it have Remote ID. Compliance with FAA?
    3. Does it have Air Worthiness Certificate with FAA?
