I made an error in this video. The Mavic 2 also has 8gb of memory built in so you can use it without an sd card like the mavic 3. Also the newer firmware with hyper lapse has since been released for the Mavic 3
Very nice 1st hand review. If i may add: - m2p does have 8gb of internal storage, - m2p does record 60fps in 2.7K (which is more than enough for general youtube warrior, even when blow up to 4k if needed), - m2p does have apas and dual gps imu (but clearly they have made some updates to that) and i wouldn't be so 100%, it drifts more than m3 (when same number of satellites are covered etc). - loudnesses of props is debatable, but i think if we talking absolute loudness, m2p is quieter (by most reviews i've seen), but m3 does probably have slightly lower pitch, that comes from slightly bigger props. But both do sound way batter than any other smaller angry bee like air or mini, and way more quieter than heavy brothers, even fantom. And to addition to this, i would suspect, they could without any bigger problem and hardware upgrade (so, just some software updates) add all sensor avoidance in all modes (excepts sport), just as faster vertical movement on m2p. This things have always some safety buffer, i know for fact unlocked m2 can fly at speeds more than 90km/h. Now, if they also add single click crop mode while recording/taking photos (so, you're practically getting something similiar with m3, but on same camera, so better iq, which we all know crop mode have), that would be something realy fantastic and would make m2p even more epic, that it was and by my opinion still is. I've asked on dji forums for ages to do that, they usually don't listen. But man, than would be nice farewell gift for m2 line from them.. Anyhow, keep up with great content.
That’s correct, Mavic 2 Pro or Zoom have that 8GB internal, also it looks you recorded this a while ago, cause Hyperlapse on M3 has been added a few weeks. Everything else good comparison, regards!!
I use 60fps in 2.7K when it's my only good option when not using an ND filter.... with f6.3 and higher sucks I guess but I have gone f6.3 also. and I do take advantage of the slow motion at times.
3:39 The reason the quality of the “zoom” camera is not good is because this drone has 2 separate sensors. The bottom is the 4/3 sensor and the top is a 1/2 sensor (Mavic mini type) and it only switches from one camera to the next after 7X. So basically, 2X and 4X is DIGITAL ZOOM from the 4/3 sensor and then it goes to the second camera. After 7X “zoom” you go back to a digital zoom. This is why it’s not actually called a “zoom camera” but rather an “explore camera. I am very disappointed about learning this because not only can you only shoot in JPEG from the Explore camera, the smaller sensor make it useless if you want that dynamic range that you PAID FOR! So basically you have a Mavic 3 with a mini (that has less features) attached on top. So the Mavic 3 SHOULD have been at least $500 cheaper if it wasn’t for this entirely useless attached second camera!!
I agree, I wish they had spent a little more time on the telephoto camera lens and gave us the option to shoot raw photos and control the settings in video mode and in my initial review I cover the details of the "zoom camera"
@@JakeSloan yeah I still purchased the Mavic 3 (still waiting for it’s delivery) but I think maybe people should wait for the Mavic 3s or Mavic 3 Pro Another complaint is the fact that they used the same controller (on the non Cine one) as the Air 2S. They should have used the smart controller on both. Or a hybrid controller with all the functions. Idk it’s just too many short comings on this drone. I still bought it due to the need for a better camera in Low Light situations…. Also the D-log on the Mavic 3 is much better than the Air 2 but that’s pretty much the only thing. (Longer battery is great but you can always buy spares.
That second tele camera is there for serious work, not for artistic snobbery. For example in lots of inspection work it gives huge boost to capabilities compared to many even far bigger drones. In package clearly intended to fit into the least restrictive EASA operating category rules. Also for huge majority of drone flyers going beyond being able to recognize the drone is illegal activity and tele camera can give something usefull from farther spots in landscape... Instead of postage stamp sized crop. Now lack of RAW etc for second camera is certainly deficiency, but hopefully that will be corrected in future firmware/flying app upgrades. Again standard remote is definitely plain disappointing and it doesn't really make much sense for any drone: Despite of notable increase in bulk to carry over older remote it doesn't even have basic telemetry display. That lack and less controls makes it low end dumbmote entirely unfit for pricy prosumer drone. And in fact telemetry displays can be gotten even in 200$/€ cheap brand drone remotes! So would call that dumbmote questionable design even for Air serie. While at the same time that carrying bulk also makes it questionable companion for low end/super portable drones like Minis.
It's not the they hid this fact from the public. It was actually known that this is the situation with the zoom camera from even before they released it. I think that this 7x camera is simply amazing for exploring instead of wasting time on getting closer to the subject, or when you CANNOT get closer. I'd definitely rather have it then not have it. Even though it is a 1/2 inch sensor, it is still 7x OPTICAL zoom.
I love my Mavic 2 Pro. Pretty disappointed with the Mavic 3 and hoping there's a Mavic 3 'Pro' that has all the same features as the Mavic 2 Pro and more. Appreciate the video Jake! Coming to AK in early July!
I concur! And if I ever were to upgrade my M2P, I'd give up the variable aperture in favor of something like the Air 2s, purely because the M3 price is well above my budget. But it's also a very problematic drone for some.
Love my M2P! - no one ever mentions these days the great colour science and the organic look it produces in both photos and video footage. I bought the Air2S and was so disappointed when I compared it to my M2P - just my opinion of course!
@@harrypenman6819 Well, kind of. The Mavic 2 Pro has an "HQ" 1:1 crop mode, giving a 40mm (full frame) field of view... on top of the 24mm FOV. That's one of the coolest things that DJI dropped.
My reasons for keeping the Mavic 2 pro for now: Waypoints Tripod mode Full FOV and HQ in d-log (sort of like 2 d-log focal lengths) Ability to turn off landing protection for hand catching. Better basic controller (bought a second phone as a permanently connected monitor for way cheaper than RC Pro and leave it connected all the time. Also has better resolution). I really want the Mavic 3, but it's not worth it at the moment. They need to add more controls in the fly app and release a fly more combo with the regular M3. I can't believe they won't let you set your distance in focus track with the Mavic 3, that's ridiculous. Ruins all compositional value of the mode. DJI missed the mark in the app pairing, the hardware looks brilliant though. I also don't think 4k120 is great for aerial shots. I tend to shot 30fps for a 24fps timeline which gives it that ever so slight dreamy effect of 80% playback.
Waypoints are now on all Mavic 3 models! DJI jumped the gun in my opinion - releasing the drone well before their firmware was ready. But, here we are, almost two years later, and now the Mavic 3 is worth the purchase. Took quite a few big firmware releases until I was ready to purchase. Cheers
Just a different point of view here: There are other uses for drones than stylized video or photographs (meaning the traditionally aesthetic kind). I use my drone a LOT for inspection of buildings for architectural projects, as well as things such as shoreline erosion studies. The tele-lens really shines in both of those purposes because it enables you to get a clearer shot from further away. This is important because the further away you are form a subject while using a longer zoom, you get a more flattened perspective (or leaning towards more orthographic), which is preferred for these types of shots, particularly in architecture as their is less angle distortion. I get it, the tele-lens isn't as sharp or has the manual modes that the main lens has... but it most definitely has its uses in the professional arena. Just happened upon your channel and will check it out! Thanks for the video!
I agree. Inspections is a use for this lens and a very good one. I’ve used it to film wildlife too however for me at least if it will not function in the cold (which I discovered it won’t focus in the cold) then it’s also extremely limited on its use
Thank you for another great video. By the way, I enjoyed seeing some of your B-Roll clips in Geoffrey Baer’s “Beyond Chicago from the Air” (PBS WTTW); your name was listed in the credits at the end. Concerning your solid reviews of DJI’s Mavic 3, I too was disappointed that the app used for the Mavic 3 (DJI Fly) does not support the creation and use of Way Points, which (as you point out in your video) are still available when using the older DJI Mavic 2 Pro (which is controlled by the app DJI GO 4.0, not DJI Fly). As you probably know, the TH-cam content creator DC RainMaker (in the Netherlands) also mentioned the retirement of DJI’s Way Points from the app for the Mavic 3. I am not sure why Way Points went away for the Mavic 3, but I suspect that (in general) Way Points make “line of sight” control of a small drone irrelevant, which may undermine current Part 107 guidance from the FAA. As a Part 107 FAA certified unmanned aerial drone pilot, this is just my opinion. Your mileage may vary. Thanks again for some of the best and most beautiful TH-cam content creation on consumer drones currently available. It is first class. And so are you.
one thing no one mentions about Mavic 2 pro is that its controller has a tiny screen with flight info. I flew often in cold climates and phone often died due to its temperature. sometimes, my phone gets phone call or video call in the middle of flight, and this screen is very helpful. This little screen saved me numerous times on Return to Home cases whenever my phone died on very cold weather or low phone battery in general. I guess you could buy RC pro controller but it's bulky and expensive. I rather carry M2P controller around with my own phone.
Great video man! You got my sub. The amount of people who on TH-cam who just don’t know the technical specifications as well as a seasoned pro has always made me mad. I’m glad you corrected the internal storage. The M2P has always been the one drone I regretted getting rid of (was part of a partial trade towards an inspire 2, then later got a Mavic air 2 as a smaller drone, but just was never as good). Fast forward to 2024 and I picked up a Mavic 2 pro for $500 on eBay and I couldn’t be more thrilled. It does the 10 bit 4K that my inspire won’t even do without paying for the prores license + proprietary SSD’s and reader, so very pleased to have one back! Great content and I appreciate the insight to how it stacks up to M3. For the price I got it for, I’m very pleased with the quality it produces. Catch you on the next one!!
I got my M3C about a week ago and have been testing it, primarily for photography. I am sorry to say I am a bit disappointed when comparing to M2P. Unless I have received a faulty unit, my M2P's camera performs better than my M3C's - better contrast, more detail, and a lot less moire . The only area M3C's camera beats M2P is it has less noise and does better in the dark. I will continue to repeat the testing in various conditions, and I might take this up with DJI Support and see if they feel the results I am getting are normal, in which case M3C is going back I'm afraid.
@@JakeSloan please do let us know what you find. I am pulling my hair out trying to convince DJI support to do anything about it, even though I have comparison photos submitted that clearly shows the issue. Thanks!
I totally agree, having had the opportunity to 'test drive' the M3C beforehand. Prior to this, I bought the Air2S (on a whim) and was sorely disappointed with that one too! I also agree with your comments about the detail, contrast and moire performing better on the M2P! Obviously the larger sensor on the M3C is going to help in low light, but in most cases, for me it's not a problem in my particular workflow. Colour science of the M2P still looks great to me.
Thanks for your comment, I am still using my DJI mavic 2 pro . I have been watching tons of videos for a year, still not convinced that the upgrade is worth it. DJI Mavic 2 pro still rules.
Mavic 2 Pro give so much features help us to get better. Like the screen control make me feel like I really flying a truly RPAS. I would definitely like to wait for that upgraded to the Mavic Mavic 3 for me to be completely superior. Thank for such a AMAZING review bro! Cheers!
Hi Jake! Amazing temps that you fly in. I see that you have the Standard Mavic 3 and you bought the RC-Pro separately; can you confirm. Have you had any disconnect issues at all? Thanks in advance!
Thats correct and I have not. From what I have ready sometimes doing a full factory reset on both and re-binding can help otherwise DJI Tech support is the only other option...
Been waiting on a good comparison video of these two drones for a while now, thank you! I knew they were gonna get rid of the tripod mode that the mavic 2 pro has! Why in the world would they get rid of that.
Your my hero Jake, finally someone compares the M3 against the drone it was to replace. Everyone keeps thinking the A2s was the air apparent but the M2P has more in common with the M3.
It’s good when a relevant user / reviewer points out the salient issues. Jake is the fact that tripod mode is unavailable due to the quad being coupled to the fly app?
Hahaha Other day I was surprised with the whitish scratches on the gimbal arms of the mavic 3, so I figured out it was due to the rear arms. I'm buying your idea of putting some tape there to avoid those sccratches getting worse. As I'm not sure whether they can get worse within time, better not to risk. Thank you. Nice video.
Awesome video as always , Jake. So, you didn’t update FW on your Mavic3 to try mastershots/ hyperlapse? Just wondering once you try mastershots, if it’s smooth. Some have experienced unstable mastershots behavior ( left to right movements. Some small , others severely. )
Ok, wait a second!!! I'm about to buy the M3 (this is my first drone).. but WHY the M2 looks pleasently better?! I mean, at 01:32, but also 03:06 to not to mention the 01:17. Damn it looks good in the last one! Can you tell me why? Different timing? different settings? Thanks :)
I was thinking the same thing. But even with the different lighting I feel that the colors themselves look better on the M2P. The M3 looks so cool and magenta
Great video Jake as always. I wish they would make all gimbal covers an automated thing or get rid of them all together. Too fiddly. Regardless, DJI makes great stuff and I am enjoying the Air2S. Have a fun-filled day!
Built in gimbal cover system would be notable extra bulk and weight decreasing performance and limiting capabilities per drone size and weight. And if there were no cover, you certainly wouldn't get even day long warranty for it.
Great video Jake!! I'm from Greece and i was wondering how hard is for you to make a video review in so cold tempratures! Maybe you are used to it! In Greece if it snow we won't get out of the house until sun is up 😂
LOL it takes a LOT of effort to make myself go do these in the winter. I usually know I have only 2-3 hours that I can do it in due to the temperature as well and after that I am done because my body is just too cold
@@JakeSloan Wow! Well, I have to say besides the suffering and all the effort, it gets very cinematic. I will try to go to Alaska someday. I have meet with the snow and ice (tons of them) just one time in life, when I was in Iceland (2019 December2020January). Loved it despite the noise of footsteps on the snow not being something I loved a lot. It gives me a little of vexation/tease (not sure the accurate word/term to use for describind this sensation in English). But, it was worth every step over it hahaha. Thank you and greetings from Brazil.
The far biggest issue in flying in cold is keeping fingers warm. Between 6th and 11th I flew in every day except Monday and the warmest weather was -11C with nice "fresh -24/25C in Tuesday. Because after that temperature going just above freezing took down all snow from trees spoiling winter landscape.
Mavic 2, Pro or Zoom it's the last DJI build drone with true, onboard loaded, waypoints missions. This gives the Huge advantage of smooth turns/pans when the drone flies autonomus. A waypoint mission for M2 (and other older DJI drones) can be planned from any PC and fine adjusted in Google Earth to get the shots you want for any location in the world in advance. Unfortunately, out of the controller range waypoint missions (possible with M2) present safety risks. Adding that the drone delivery companies want the sky cleared of hobbysts, you won't get back onboard loaded waypoint missions anytime soon in a consumer drone. So I would get a Mavic 2 anytime over a 3 unless I would create videos for BIG screens or fast/slo mo where the better M3 camera might count a bit. But still, for slow motion a Mavic Pro 1 with a GoPro under the belly (DO NOT PUT IT ON TOP OR YOU LOSE THE DRONE!) does a decent job at a fraction of how much M3 costs. Also shots 240 FPS, beat this, M3!
As the satisfied owner of older DJI drones of Mavic 2 Pro vintage and earlier, I could not agree more with your mention of onboard waypoint GPS data storage that pretty much ended with the Mavic 2 Pro. I've got a Mavic 2 Zoom on order and already own a pair of Mavic 2 Pros for good measure. While the Mavic 3 will fly beyond its controller's signal range on waypoint missions using DJI's native waypoint planning facility, that feature is cumbersome and time-consuming, in comparison to the simple and intuitive offline waypoint planning capability available if Litchi is used. A heftier price tag may translate to a more desirable drone for those who follow trends and have deep pockets, but this drone owner of modest means happens to be content with my fleet of older DJI museum pieces.
@@riverbankfisher thank you for this post. I just noticed myself that DJI re introduced (through the back door :)) ) the onboard waypoints for who is ready to pay the Mavic 3 price tag. But compared with Litchi's ease to of use, export and preview the flight with Google Earth..... is as you said, cumbersome! C'mon DJI, do the right thing! Dump DJI Fly where belongs (rubbish bin) and give all your models back the power of true waypoints !(with Litchi :)))
Hi Jake, Great video as usual. Just to confirm, you got the new RC-Pro for the Mavic 3. You’re not flying it with the existing SmartController, correct? It’s the thing that is giving me a lot of heartburn about the 3. If I can’t use my SmartController for it and the RC-Pro is not backward compatible with the Air 2S, I have to carry two controllers and 2 drones. Also, the Mavic 3 Combo does not come with the RC-Pro, correct? Which means it’s an $1100 add-on and means you’re (only) $800 away from the Mavic 3 Cine. I don’t like flying my drones with phones. Thoughts?
I’d wait just a bit. It sounds like DJI will be making a combo with the RC Pro soon and eventually the RC PRO will be compatible with the Air 2s is the rumor.
Hi, Jake! Have you had any troubles flying the drone in extreme cold environments? My Mavic Air almost crashed a few times when I flew it on high altitude mountain range. It took off normally and in 15-20 seconds it went into emergency landing mode because of the cold battery. Scary but thankfully there was some flat surface to land.
I have a video about flying in cold weather but it is CRUCIAL to keep your batteries warm right up till you are ready to take off. I have flown in temperatures as cold at -55f and not had issue when I keep my batteries warm
Had ten Mavic 3 for training last month and two units exhibited poor GPS performance. Another surprise was the lack of timed still shots in POI mode (hopefully just a software update) but it looks like DJI is pushing industrial users towards the M30
@@JakeSloan Not sure about improved GPS but the "Timed Shots" in POI has not changed. This is a bread and butter feature for vertical infrastructure inspections.
Interesting that the Mavic 3 has waypoints in the Hyperlapse mode. I wonder if one could utilize this waypoint mode the same way it was used in the M2P.
Interesting yeah the capability is there just not for mapping missions etc. I’ll be curious to see what 3rd party apps are able to do when they release the SDK
Sold my Mavic 2 pros and bought a couple Mavic 3 cine’s. Hate the app and sometimes the camera is slightly tilted. But other than that they are amazing. Still use the a2s lot though for real estate
I hope the lens has been improved. I find the lens quality on my Mavic 2 Pro is embarrassing for something with Hasselblad written on it when shooting stills. The corners are very poor quality. Thanks for the video...
Well Hasselblad really only developed the color science for these drones they didn’t develop the cameras or lenses. I feel it is improved but how much is harder to say since I haven’t don’t any specific testing
@@JakeSloan - DJI market the camera (I assume that the lens is included) as "Hasselblad" for both the Mavic 2 and the the 3. I assume you know that DJI now own Hasselblad as well. Obviously, as a photographer from the days when a Hasselblad was the last word in image quality, I didn't expect miracles for 2K including an otherwise excellent drone, but I still wish these things had better quaity lenses. Cheers again for the video - love your work..
Great video! I’ve been waiting to see this comparison. It also would be fun to see a comparison between the mavic 3 and the evolve 2 since that has a micro 4/3 sensor. Anyways, thanks so much
i wonder if one of these would be good enough to use in a new drone type video/photo business... i have only flown regular line of sight drones on an off over last 8 years... thanks for sharing
planning to get one, now playing with Mini 2. Would love to upgrade. looking for something heavier & zoom capability. I use for telecommunication work.
Jake, any news about software upgrades to the DJI Smart Controller so it can be used with the Mavic 3? Really like using the Smart Controller with the Mavic 2 vs stock controller + phone. Hate to think I have to drop another grand to get the new Smart Controller Pro if I upgrade to the Mavic 3.
@@JakeSloan The DJI websites states future firmware updates will allow additional drones to be used with the old Smart Controller. Hopefully the Mavic 3 is added. Really hate to go back to the stock controller and iPhone but am willing to if there's a chance the Mavic 3 will be added. I'd Really Really hate the thought of dropping another $1,200 for the new Smart Controller Pro only to have the Mavic 3 added to the Smart Controller. Any chance you can keep us up to date on this?
Nice. Your comparison grades need to be the same grade for consistency.... thought it was almost perfect review but I still don't know the comparative differences between these two sensors...(whats that about) along with the noise tests! The 3 was behind you in shot from camera..😄... maybe getting picky now but just annoying as you were so close..
@@JakeSloan btw....it's not normal for the rear arms to hit the gimbal, I check my cine and my 3 and neither do that...you should Check that out bro...
Jake, the mavic 2 I have an always read it had 14 stops of dynamic range. The Mavic 3 has 12.8. Can you tell me what's up with that cause you said the 3 has more
That 14 stops mark is only when used in HDR modes not normal modes, normal modes dynamic range was right around 12 if I remember right, the difference in real world usage is pretty negligible to be honest
The short time I have used my Mavic 2 pro, I always seems to get the battery swelling issues and they are always hard to remove! Has this been improved on the Mavic 3 ? Not heard any videos addressing this issue , and hopefully this has been improved on the Mavic 3?
I haven’t had that issue but I also don’t work much in hot environments. I haven’t heard of anyone else having issues either but it is kind of early in the game still.
Question: Some job descriptions explicitly state that you should have your own Mavic 2, Mavic Air, Mavic Mini, or Phantom for the job. They haven't said Mavic 3. Do you think they'll let the Mavic 3 pass? I'm a new pilot with a Holy Stone 720E looking for something for more commercial usage and I'm unsure which to pick. Also some websites have stopped promoting the 2 Pro.
My Mavic 2 pro fly more bundle was recently stolen, trying to see if it's worth spending the extra on the M3, from watching other reviews the image improvements don't seem as drastic as I'd hoped for the price bump. The extended range and battery life is definitely a huge plus imo.
@@jimmyog I made the mistake of leaving it in my car overnight. Passenger seat window was smashed and my drone along with some other stuff was stolen. Now I'm super paranoid anytime I hear noises at night outside my apartment. Also should have been on full coverage. Still kinda mad about it tbh.
@@jimmyog Also, the fact that they don't have some sort of tracking or serial protection in the event of someone stealing a drone is insane. It would be extremely easy to implement, and people have been asking for it on the forums for years.
At this video filming time a minute to a minute 30sec. But they just updated the firmware and that brought some improvement. I just haven’t had time to test how much improvement yet.
Ok I'm still on the fence.. what about 4k 120 or any of the lower resolution modes. The M2 suffered badly from aliasing and stuff at the lower shooting modes do you notice any aliasing at 4k 120?
@@Silverturky thats because m2p used a line-skipped mode for the full fov resolutions. In hq mode it crops into the sensor to a 1:1 readout. Thus eliminating aliasing
Don’t you have any issues with the Air 2s in cold weather? The one I have has an issue when its gimbal is not fast enough in cold weather to stabilize camera when I’m accelerating or braking. Something in the gimbal is just freezing. Such a disappointment especially considering that I live in a place where it’s cold 6 months a year.
@@JakeSloan that problem also occurs while flying in gusty wind. In such conditions relative angle of the gimbal is not able to change fast enough. Hope that makes sence, cause I am not a native speaker xD
I kind of like the video more on the old M2Pro in the shot at 1:09. Because its softer Bigest problem with most drones: They're oversharpening like Smartphones. Can't really match with film cameras. Anyways I got the Mavic 3 Classic now, let's give it a chance
Is it just me or are the mavic 3 videos a little over saturated? Reminds me of the color science of pocket 2, a little bit too much color and oversharpened. To me it seems like the Mavic 2 pro is more like a "dumb" camera where you get the video straight from the image sensor, while the mavic 3 tries to digitally enhance the videos. Or maybe its just personal preference ^^
Has anyone been able to add a microphone to a drone like a small shotgun mic? I like to take videos of trains, but the viewer really misses out with no sound from the train, so that is why I ask. Thanks
I’m surprised nobody is talking about how DJI just got put on the blacklist in DECEMBER. DJI rushed the Mavic 3 out because of it. DJI can no longer work with US companies to make there software like your apps etc. That’s why it changed with the Mavic 3. This is really going to effect DJI from here on out. So this is a warning ⛔️ cause DJI problems are going to mount up and there products are going to be effected by it big time. Y’all just watch cause there will be a new Drone company who takes over so save your money 💰.
the black list is only where the US government is concerned and companies who do work for the US Government. It does not affect private parties or companies unless they wish to do drone work for the US Government
@@JakeSloan In 2020, the Department of Commerce barred US companies from exporting products to DJI, which has been judged to be a national security threat by the Department of Defense.
I made an error in this video. The Mavic 2 also has 8gb of memory built in so you can use it without an sd card like the mavic 3. Also the newer firmware with hyper lapse has since been released for the Mavic 3
amazing work sir thank you for this video, Love From Pakistan
I was going to ask about that - I thought that it had some built in memory and the Mavic Mini did not.
My M2P has APAS.
But not apas 3.0 😜.
I was gonna say! Also, seems like very different WB and exposure on a few of those shots.
Very nice 1st hand review. If i may add:
- m2p does have 8gb of internal storage,
- m2p does record 60fps in 2.7K (which is more than enough for general youtube warrior, even when blow up to 4k if needed),
- m2p does have apas and dual gps imu (but clearly they have made some updates to that) and i wouldn't be so 100%, it drifts more than m3 (when same number of satellites are covered etc).
Yep! I corrected a few of those things in the pinned comment. Great feedback and insight!!
Yes I thought the same thing as Jake said it --- I have a M2P and it has 8GB internal.
@@JakeSloan yeah I still purchased the Mavic 3 (still waiting for it’s delivery) but I think maybe people should wait for the Mavic 3s or Mavic 3 Pro
Another complaint is the fact that they used the same controller (on the non Cine one) as the Air 2S.
Again standard remote is definitely plain disappointing and it doesn't really make much sense for any drone:
Despite of notable increase in bulk to carry over older remote it doesn't even have basic telemetry display.
Oh yes!! Just received the TH-cam notification on this video. Look forward to watching it after I'm done with my 9 to 5 job. Thank you Jake!!👍
Sweet!
I love my Mavic 2 Pro. Pretty disappointed with the Mavic 3 and hoping there's a Mavic 3 'Pro' that has all the same features as the Mavic 2 Pro and more. Appreciate the video Jake! Coming to AK in early July!
Agreed and that’s Awesome!!!
Foreshadowing today!
@@harrypenman6819 Well, kind of. The Mavic 2 Pro has an "HQ" 1:1 crop mode, giving a 40mm (full frame) field of view... on top of the 24mm FOV. That's one of the coolest things that DJI dropped.
New sub... I love how so many of your videos actually focus on image quality differences vs feature differences. Much appreciated!
Thanks!!
My reasons for keeping the Mavic 2 pro for now:
Waypoints
Tripod mode
Full FOV and HQ in d-log (sort of like 2 d-log focal lengths)
Ability to turn off landing protection for hand catching.
Agreed excellent points
Waypoints are now on all Mavic 3 models! DJI jumped the gun in my opinion - releasing the drone well before their firmware was ready. But, here we are, almost two years later, and now the Mavic 3 is worth the purchase. Took quite a few big firmware releases until I was ready to purchase. Cheers
Geez Jake you must be in my head. This is the other video I have been waiting for. Thanks for taking the time to create it.
ROFL I hope it helps and gives you the information you need!
I’m happy I’ve upgraded from the mavic 2 pro, however I would still be happy with the M2P. The mavic 3 isn’t a must upgrade, especially as a hobbyist.
agreed
@@JakeSloan Oh wow! So the tele-lens is not functional in the cold? Not good... I guess I'm lucky there, haha (I'm in Hawaii)! Cheers!
Agreed. I think also they may put waypoints in a future enterprise version as well. Thanks for the kind words about WTTW!!
Good points. Still very happy I upgraded to Mavic 3 and looking forward to access more features in the coming updates.
Nice and me too!
one thing no one mentions about Mavic 2 pro is that its controller has a tiny screen with flight info.
Very true and it has saved me quite a few times as well when my phone died
Thank you
You’re the man. Thanks for braving the cold. I could hear your jaw freezing up at the end :)
Thanks
I got my M3C about a week ago and have been testing it, primarily for photography. I am sorry to say I am a bit disappointed when comparing to M2P. Unless I have received a faulty unit, my M2P's camera performs better than my M3C's - better contrast, more detail, and a lot less moire . The only area M3C's camera beats M2P is it has less noise and does better in the dark. I will continue to repeat the testing in various conditions, and I might take this up with DJI Support and see if they feel the results I am getting are normal, in which case M3C is going back I'm afraid.
interesting, I haven't tried the classic yet but I hope to soon, in reality it should be exactly the same as the Mavic 3
@@Mark-fl1hg thanks for confirming. I sent the M3C back two days ago for a refund. What a shame, what a missed opportunity.
Thanks for your comment, I am still using my DJI mavic 2 pro . I have been watching tons of videos for a year, still not convinced that the upgrade is worth it. DJI Mavic 2 pro still rules.
I keep telling myself I should upgrade bit I finally talk myself out of doing it 😂. Great video once again!!!
Nice!
Mavic 2 Pro give so much features help us to get better.
Like the screen control make me feel like I really flying a truly RPAS.
I would definitely like to wait for that upgraded to the Mavic Mavic 3 for me to be completely superior.
Thank for such a AMAZING review bro!
Cheers!
Thanks and I agree!
You explain better than people in the store. Thanks
thanks
Great comparison Jake! Always enjoy these kind of videos from you. Thorough and informative
Thank you sir!
Glad I could help! I have no idea why they got rid of tripod mode. I really loved that mode on the M2P
Your my hero Jake, finally someone compares the M3 against the drone it was to replace. Everyone keeps thinking the A2s was the air apparent but the M2P has more in common with the M3.
Agreed!
Awesome video as always! which camera did you use for the video itself?😊
I use the A7sIII for this video
It’s good when a relevant user / reviewer points out the salient issues. Jake is the fact that tripod mode is unavailable due to the quad being coupled to the fly app?
yes it is
Hahaha Other day I was surprised with the whitish scratches on the gimbal arms of the mavic 3, so I figured out it was due to the rear arms. I'm buying your idea of putting some tape there to avoid those sccratches getting worse. As I'm not sure whether they can get worse within time, better not to risk. Thank you. Nice video.
Lol you’re welcome! Cheers
Very interesting comparison!
Cheers from Bucharest Romania!!
Cheers!
Heya, does the smart controller you could buy with Mavic pro 2 work with Mavic 3? It appeared you had it but not sure. Thanks and great video
no it does not
Awesome video as always , Jake. So, you didn’t update FW on your Mavic3 to try mastershots/ hyperlapse? Just wondering once you try mastershots, if it’s smooth. Some have experienced unstable mastershots behavior ( left to right movements. Some small , others severely. )
when I recorded this video that firmware wasn't out yet but I will have to give it a try now!!
Thanks :)
Different timing and the lighting was better. The mavic 3 does perform better than the 2 for sure but not by huge leaps.
Thank you @@JakeSloan!
I was thinking the same thing. But even with the different lighting I feel that the colors themselves look better on the M2P. The M3 looks so cool and magenta
i got a 300 dollar mini se. it does pretty much the same thing. video quality for me is awesome and it's easy to fly.
I highly recommend the mini series for anyone wanting to get into flying drones. They are just fantastic for the price.
Jake You are the best. Very nice comparison.
Thank you Nick!
Spot on review Jake. I’ll never get rid of my M2 Pro. But it’s just a great back up to my M3 now. Great review man. Subbed!!
Thanks a lot!
Great video Jake as always. I wish they would make all gimbal covers an automated thing or get rid of them all together. Too fiddly. Regardless, DJI makes great stuff and I am enjoying the Air2S. Have a fun-filled day!
Thank you Michael! I agree on the gimbal covers!!!
Built in gimbal cover system would be notable extra bulk and weight decreasing performance and limiting capabilities per drone size and weight.
And if there were no cover, you certainly wouldn't get even day long warranty for it.
@@tuunaes Makes sense. Thanks.
Great as usual sur. c you tonight!

Thanks man!
Also shots 240 FPS, beat this, M3!
true and unfortunate.
Between the Mavic 2 pro and the DJI Air 2s, which one would you recommend for a first drone, assuming the price is the same?
I would do the air 2s for sure
@@JakeSloan thanks!
Thanks for the detailed comparison!
You’re welcome

Thanks for your video! It’s the best one about mavic 3 vs mavic 2

Had ten Mavic 3 for training last month and two units exhibited poor GPS performance. Another surprise was the lack of timed still shots in POI mode (hopefully just a software update) but it looks like DJI is pushing industrial users towards the M30
WOW be sure and check out my latest video as they just pushed out a really good update for the mavic 3 that fixes most issues
@@JakeSloan Not sure about improved GPS but the "Timed Shots" in POI has not changed. This is a bread and butter feature for vertical infrastructure inspections.
What ND were you using with the mavic 3? It was exhibiting some color shifting quite noticeably & it was splotchy
I can't remember now but the light was changing rapidly with the cloud cover so it made It a massive challenge to keep up
Also in Mavic 3 when you take pictures in raw mode appear a dark Vignette in the corners
True but I find it fairly easy to deal with in editing
I've upgraded for image quality, been great so far
Fantastic
Thank you Sir. Nice presentation!
Most welcome!
Another slight continuity error. The first firmware update happened before you posted this video and it does have hyperlapse.
You are correct. It had not happened when I recorded this video
The waypoints feature is so useful. Why keep it from us, DJI? So strange.
I imagine they want to sell an enterprise version for lots of $$$$ lol
@@JakeSloan Lol... I don't like your imagination right now!
Can you do any warpaint work with it yet ?
I think the mp2 can work with photometry and stuff as opposed to the M3
Yes it can at the moment. Hopefully they release that for the mavic 3 some day
Thanks Jake. Love your content !

Sold my Mavic 2 pros and bought a couple Mavic 3 cine’s. Hate the app and sometimes the camera is slightly tilted. But other than that they are amazing.
Still use the a2s lot though for real estate
agreed!!
@@davidanderson8381 yes dji marketed it like that but it was just a buzz word to get shmucks to think it was quality.

DJI has said the original smart controller will not be compatible with the mavic 3 unfortunately
@@JakeSloan The DJI websites states future firmware updates will allow additional drones to be used with the old Smart Controller. Hopefully the Mavic 3 is added. Really hate to go back to the stock controller and iPhone but am willing to if there's a chance the Mavic 3 will be added.
I think they would. It’s essentially a better version of all of those

upgraded and i love my mavic 3 cine
Nice!!
My Mavic 2 pro fly more bundle was recently stolen, trying to see if it's worth spending the extra on the M3, from watching other reviews the image improvements don't seem as drastic as I'd hoped for the price bump. The extended range and battery life is definitely a huge plus imo.
the image quality is definitely better but not massively. The biggest improvements come from battery, flight performance etc
How was it stolen wtf
@@jimmyog I made the mistake of leaving it in my car overnight. Passenger seat window was smashed and my drone along with some other stuff was stolen. Now I'm super paranoid anytime I hear noises at night outside my apartment. Also should have been on full coverage. Still kinda mad about it tbh.
@@jimmyog Also, the fact that they don't have some sort of tracking or serial protection in the event of someone stealing a drone is insane. It would be extremely easy to implement, and people have been asking for it on the forums for years.
How long does the M3 take to reach recommended gps lock
At this video filming time a minute to a minute 30sec. But they just updated the firmware and that brought some improvement. I just haven’t had time to test how much improvement yet.
Ok I'm still on the fence.. what about 4k 120 or any of the lower resolution modes. The M2 suffered badly from aliasing and stuff at the lower shooting modes do you notice any aliasing at 4k 120?
@@Silverturky thats because m2p used a line-skipped mode for the full fov resolutions. In hq mode it crops into the sensor to a 1:1 readout. Thus eliminating aliasing

Glad you enjoyed it
Don’t you have any issues with the Air 2s in cold weather? The one I have has an issue when its gimbal is not fast enough in cold weather to stabilize camera when I’m accelerating or braking. Something in the gimbal is just freezing. Such a disappointment especially considering that I live in a place where it’s cold 6 months a year.
I haven’t run into that issue personally but I also don’t usually film when I’m doing hard stops and starts.
@@JakeSloan that problem also occurs while flying in gusty wind. In such conditions relative angle of the gimbal is not able to change fast enough. Hope that makes sence, cause I am not a native speaker xD
Very honest review ..

I kind of like the video more on the old M2Pro in the shot at 1:09. Because its softer
Bigest problem with most drones: They're oversharpening like Smartphones. Can't really match with film cameras.
Anyways I got the Mavic 3 Classic now, let's give it a chance
That should be a great one for you and I agree on sharpening. I avoid it at all costs
Do you know if smart controller1 can supports os3 with air2s or still remain in os2? Thanks!
The smart controller (original) does support the air 2s but DJI hasn't said how. It likely remains on OS2
you're wrong on the mavic 2 not having internal storage. it has 8GB. 02:00 into the clip.

Or maybe its just personal preference ^^
depends on what modes you shoot in
Thanks
You’re welcome
Has anyone been able to add a microphone to a drone like a small shotgun mic? I like to take videos of trains, but the viewer really misses out with no sound from the train, so that is why I ask. Thanks
not really, the problem is without super complex software the sound you would hear most is the drone because the mic is so close to the drone.
Mavic 2 has 8g internal storage too.

This Drone is my Dream
I hope you get one some day
@@JakeSloan Thank you so much
@@JakeSloan Thank you sir
@@JakeSloan you might want to go read up on the sanctions that the US imposed on them.
@@JakeSloan
In 2020, the Department of Commerce barred US companies from exporting products to DJI, which has been judged to be a national security threat by the Department of Defense.
hmmm, mavic2 also has 8gb memory
You are correct! I pinned a comment with my correction!!
correction: the Mavic 2 does have internal storage.

if colours were unedited in both drones - the Mavic 2 Pro looks way better by colour science then the Mavic 3. 1:12, 1:32, 1:42
