I’d be fine with this idea as long as the original 1995 version would still be available to watch through digital rental, digital purchase, and on Disney+. That way there’d be the option of seeing the movie the way it was originally animated or with updated computer animation. That’s really all that matters to me because how much I already cherish the film.
Agreed. Especially as it’s the first EVER computer animated film, the somewhat dated graphics is part of the movie’s charm. Now that you mentioned “as long as the other version is on Disney plus,” I wished they would’ve done that with the Star Wars original trilogy.😭

Remastering animated movies is a much better idea than all those live action messes. It's become common with games so I would also welcome it for some classic animated movies.
Having a remaster of Toy Story would be interesting but, I think I'm staying with the original because it started the legacy of Computer Generated Animation.
Interesting idea until Disney rereleases every Pixar movie in theaters with updated animation and removes the original versions from physical retail and streamjnf
The first Toy Story is as good as it is because of the incredible amount of effort put into it. Remaking it with more modern tech does nothing but make it more convenient for them to make it quickly . Even if it’s more technically advanced, we will still subconsciously see the lack of effort with our third eye
You just reminded me: why we cant get the original SW films in digital/physical format? i would love to see them. As for the Toy Story "remake": hm ...yeh..would be nice to see but keep the original. Outdated, as it may be, its still fun to see. Plus, you get to appreciate how far Pixar has come. :)
I seem to remember George Lucas claiming in an interview with Leonard Martin that the original _Star Wars_ films simply no longer exist…but I also tend to think Lucas says a lot that may not be completely true-where’d he get the source material for the Special Editions in the first place? I hate to say this, but I don’t think the originals will be available until after Lucas passes, for some legal reason…
The problem with this idea is similar to what many developers struggle with for remasters of games versus remakes of games that change things up. Remasters are little motivation for the creative people that are making it. People want to try and give their own new and unique take on an IP as opposed to just doing the old thing again, but prettier.
It would be cool but ultimately feel like a waste of resources. Besides, I think there’s a charm to the original Toy Story’s jankiness-reminds us how far computer animation has come in the almost 30 (?1!) years since it came out.
TBH I'd definitely love a remake with same audio but with the new technology, an exact Shot for Shot remake They would have to reanimate everything, that's great but no adding hints like Andy being gay or something
I once read that the original graphical rendering, pixel-count and all, which at that time took months, they could render today in twenty minutes. If they had all the assets and animation saved on some hard-drive, that'd be one thing. Just alter a few specific models like the humans and the dog. Having to redo every asset, character movement, lighting and camera set-up, everything again, from scratch, is another.
No. No! God no! Without the original Toy Story, we wouldn't have the stunning 3D animated movies we have today. The animation really holds up after nearly thirty years, and giving it a modern facelift will just be insulting.
Im more like leave it alone cause just understand the times were what they were but i wouldn't mind seeing them try like once and see if it can work out in a way chances are they may at somepoint
If I'm revisiting my childhood nostalgia, I want to revisit it with all the outdated graphics and clunky textures that I remember it with. I saw they had a remaster of this Croc game coming out on Switch, I proceeded to buy it on PlayStation 1.
I heard the Pixar had to remake all the models from scratch for Toy Story 3 because the old ones weren't compatible with the software anymore. If that's true then they would literally have to remake all of the models and animation. Keep in mind that Toy Story 3 itself is almost 15 years old now too. There's absolutely no way they could re-use anything made in 1993, 1994.
I think there is something special about being able to see how much animation and technology has grown and advanced over the years by looking back at the original versions
I don't think they should do this. They'd probably be lazy and just use an AI system to update it. The original animation style contributes to the movies charm
No! It's a product of it's time as is a historical significant peice of art as the first full length computer animated film and still holds up well. Also I don't see Disney wanting to dump additional money into a completed film from 29 years ago. With that said I would watch it if they did it but 100% agree with you don't replace the original and have both versions available for rent or purchase like Warner Brothers does with the theatrical and extended versions of Lord of the Rings.
I mean i love when they do it for video games but that makes sense because the difference in video games pre 2000 and now is so much different that cgi from pre 2000 to now it isnt something that stands out watch movies from the 80s or 90s video games needed to be updated tho but id be open to seeing what it looks like
Video game CG also looked really bad back then as it had to run in real time on consumer hardware so those were more in need of remasters. Also a game can become dated from a control standpoint, camera and weapon controls in a lot of old games are really bad compared to today's so they had to be updated.
Why would you do that? Thats like saying, do you want to permanently erase the 1994 Lion King, and replace it with the 2019 Lion King. Toy Story is the first ever CGI movie. Its animation plays an important part in history. Why would anybody want to erase that? We wouldn't have the animation we have today without Toy Story. If you want Toy Story with modern animation, just watch Toy Story 4. Or wait for Toy Story 5.
I think this is what the Live Action Lion King should have done. Nobody wanted to see the same story told differently with flat voice acting. All they needed to do was recreate shot for shot and run the same audio track.
I think it's the same as what George did to star wars, and what James Cameron has done with his 4ks. Also I think it's important to let people see where art came from, even if it's visually antiquated, and there's beauty in the old.
George added scenes, replaced sequences and changed most of the effects and then barely allowed the old version to be released. I'm not endorsing replacing the original version. But also, re-rendering isn't the same as adding scenes.
Holy s*** about 5 years ago I was actually hoping they would do something like this and sometimes I still think about it but with them adding the original deleted scenes to it
I’d be interested in seeing it, because we see this with video games all the time, they come out with a remastered version, it’s the same story, same gameplay, voice work etc. just updated with modern day animation, and it’d be cool from a completionist standpoint, because graphically there’s a huge animation quality difference between Toy Story 1 & 2 and Toy Story 3 & 4, Toy Story 3 and 4’s animation was so much higher quality than 1 & 2 because it came out 10 years after the second movie, that was an entire decade of animation improving by the time 3 came out, so it’d be cool to have all 4 movies with that high quality animation, i definitely don’t think they should outright replace the originals, I think those movies have a place in history and should be preserved but if they do preserve them I think these could be a neat alternative, I guess it really comes down to how much of an authenticity nut you are, like are you the kind of guy who likes to hunt down the original versions of movies or games with the original animations and such? It's a possibility and an idea that they could make it a reality, but only till then we'll exactly know for sure. Love the video btw!
I would be down for the idea. However, just like with the Star Wars special editions, I wouldn't have any problems with it, as long as they make the original version available as well.
I think the Star Wars OT being updated by George Lucas would be fine if they kept the original versions widely available to the public, but they're not so people are pissed about it. So as long as they do that with Toy Story, where the original is still on Disney+, i think it'd be fine.
Personally I would love to see a modern remake of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius from 2001. That is one of the first feature length CG films, and it would be insane to see it remade with modern technology. Of course Jimmy Neutron is not nearly as popular or relevant as Toy Story, but the idea still seems really cool.
