Fun fact, in the scene in Toy Story 4 when Woody gives Bonnie the parts to create Forky, he hides behind a lunch box that has Reptillus Maximus on the cover. A pretty cool easter egg
I was so excited for Toy Story of Terror when it was being advertised, and it didn't disappoint. I had no idea Toy Story That Time Forgot was a thing, but I watched the premiere and also loved it. I'm very easy to please by Pixar.
Small Fry might be one of my favorite overall Pixar shorts, it's just a fun little mini-adventure that introduces us to a different side of toy life in that universe. And that's really all I ever wanted after Toy Story 3, these shorts are perfect for the characters, I had no real interest in TS 4 and I definitely have no interest in a 5th full length movie.
I really like Small Fry as well, and honestly, I prefer it over The Muppets (2011) which included the short theatrically. It's odd that it wasn't included on the home media releases of The Muppets, but at least it's available on the releases of Pixar Short Films Collection Volume 2 and Toy Story Of Terror.
The best thing about these shorts is that they got all of the main actors to reprise their roles in smaller shorts. (Minus Jim Varney who passed away after the release of Toy Story 2)
I loved Toy Story of Terror when I saw it. The animation for the black and white Dracula-esque movie was beautiful. I also really felt for Jessie and her claustrophobia (since I also struggle with that lol). Great stuff to entertain my lil cousin (and me) at Halloween.
There's something you forgot to mention about Lamp Life, they don't mention where Bo gets her new outfit, they also completely retcon the fact that her dress was porcelain in the first movie.
I love Toy Story: The Time Forgot, i dig how in depth the battlesaurs are and how much effort put in for characters in a simplistic Christmas special. like daaamn they even got the one and only trigger studios to animate a mock-up cartoon intro.
I’ve seen these short films on Disney channel, and the specials, they were entertaining since I wondered how woody and the gang would be under Bonnie’s care. They were special because I never thought they would make a Toy Story 4 let alone 5
You know, I REALLY appriciate that they didn't do the BS 'kids just play them video games', but instead showed that children will play with what they have: be ig video game or figures or anything else.
Honestly, all of these shorts and mini adventures were really great! I just loved all these creative adventures and new more implications that they brought into the universe. Toy Story of Tower was definitely my favorite one.
Most of if not all of them were pretty enjoyable little shorts showing what life for the toys is like with Bonnie (And Toy Story of Terror was great). IMO If Disney is so desperate to continue the story, they should’ve just made a series like this for Disney Plus
Don’t know why the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie and show aren’t on Disney plus yet, they were the spinoff content during the Toy Story 2 era, and really stood out with its 2D animation and throwback to 80’s action cartoons. Also did the concept Lightyear was going for infinitely better IMO
Nice video as usual Dazz. I find it kind of amazing how impressive the quality is in all the Toy Story shorts. I agree with your ranking as Toy Story of Terror is fab, captures some of the first films horror but gives a really cool spotlight on Jessie and her claustrophobia. And Small Fry is a classic, I love how much the creators thought about the toy designs for this one, they are all unique and have some fun mechanics like the boxing gloves. And from a worldbuilding view it makes perfect sense for there to be mini Buzz & Zurg toys at a fast food chain. This honestly just shows how ridiculous it is to claim that Lightyear is the movie Andy watched as a kid, what with everything in the TS universe counting against it. I think Lightyear should have been a completely original story not focussed on Buzz, or if you want it to be about him, have it as a grown up reboot of the character of Buzz created by an adult Andy?
I loved those shorts cuz it felt like a coherent continuation to them moving to Bonnie's place, and the characters kept consistent, not like that cash grab of Toy story 4 wich broke the core messages of the franchise and did dirty to characters like Bonnie, made Buzz lose all brain cells, nerfed Jessie and made Woody bretray his beliefs, gosh I hate that movie so much, they could just kept making those shorts and specials forever and kept selling toys but the greed was bigger
I grew up watching Toy Story of Terror and That Time Forgot when they came out on TV, and also the other 3 toy story toons. Safe to say these were my childhood and I love all of them!
Mr Potato Head has always been my favorite character since I was a kid, so Toy Story of Terror is my favorite by default because of how prominent his role is.
I managed to watch these shorts as a kid, and I really liked them! It was nice to see how the toys lived their life within Bonnie's house inbetween the 3rd and 4th movies. I think my favorite short was the one where Rex was so insecure about being called a "party pooper" that he was willing to flood the entire house!
I think what’s neat in these shorts and specials is how they take advantage of the different types of toys. I really like some of the designs and mechanics like Transitron
I've only seen the Motel one, and I remember loving the scene with the cops at the end, watching the guy steal their squad car, and when he crashes it and runs they just tiredly go "we've got a runner" as if this happens every week
I was excited for toy story 4 because I LOVED these shorts. I try to watch Toy Story that Time Forgot every Christmas. Maybe I was excited for new toy story movies cuz what I really wanted was more of these.
One thing that makes Toy Story That Time Forgot one of my favorite Pixar works **PERIOD** is that Disney commissioned Studio Trigger to do a balls-to-the-wall hardcore intro for a fictional Battlesaurs cartoon in the style of a 90s action anime. And I have been hoping and praying on my knees that Disney will make an entire cartoon out of Battlesaurs--it would be like a fucking money printer, and I would buy every toy in that toyline if it was real. The intro can be found in its entirety here: th-cam.com/video/LXt9XgxM7zo/w-d-xo.html
Woody is definitely worth more than $2000 but it's because the museum is a museum and they were getting the whole paraphernalia of the show and cast it would be worth so much more to them. I really wish we got more mundane little shorts in the toy story universe it's really fun
"I always forget Buzz can glow in the dark." So did Toy Story 4. Remember when Woody & Buzz are talking in the RV at night? Buzz should be glowing, but he just isn't. Bruh.
Since Toy Story 5 is happening, I'd like to see them make a short or TV special exploring the concept of Toys to Life toys, (Skylanders, Disney Infinity, LEGO Dimensions, amiibo, etc.) even if Toys to Life has been dead for a few years now.
A long time ago they sold a toy story anniversary dvd that had a lot of short animations that i believe were ment to be tv bumpers(short entertainment during commercial breaks) and one of them was a short about the toy story gang getting kids toys from a fastfood place which had a small versoin of buzz that looks almost exactly like the one in this newer short.
19:50 This almost feels like a Morrowind easter egg with the mohawk, the voice and the way he says outlander. Probably wasn't intentional but I'm sure it at least crossed someone's mind in the studio.
I like how you point out the upsides of these episodes, most animation reviewers point out and judge every small detail; good comments about something is a pleasant change of pace. …Does the cleric give anyone else ‘Dark Crystal’ vibes?
I just saw toy story of terror for the first time after this video and wow they went crazy with some of jessies panic attacks. People have been praising puss in boots for stuff like this but this was really well made too like damn
I especially enjoy the studio trigger produced in universe as for the dino toys, feels like a fun fit for that over the top 80s mash up and gives the adult animation fans a little extra during a solid story.
15:29 lets be honest, there's probably one person everyone thinks that would buy woody in the toy story universe, Al, must be trying to rebuild his collection by getting the things he lost, good thing it failed this time
One thing I find interesting is that the armor in the Battlesaur's arsenal fits Trixie perfectly, which led me to theorize that Trixie was originally part of the Battlesaur toy line, maybe as a combat mount or something.
I haven’t watched toy story of terror but i did like the one with the dino action figures, especially how toys from a whole line may act when they first come out of the box instead of a single toy like Buzz from toy story 1
If you owned the pixar shorts collection on DVD, then you would've seen a good handful of the Toy Story Shorts. They also aired on the Disney Channel, and Disney Junior.
Oh I loved the Dinosaurs, it was so freaking nostalgic. I hope to build a toy company, it is I know naive doing it through Patreon and TH-cam but I want to try to be a modern A.C. Gilbert. Next Holiday season check out the Man Who Saved Christmas, which ironically stars Jason Alexander. Honestly it can be watched anytime of year as it is more focused on the toys made in the WW1 era and what happens when government take sarcasm to heart.
I think the toys from the "That Time Forgotten" should have been just toys roleplaying because the owner refuses to play with them. Have little moments where people break character (in secret) to tell the main toys to just play along and they can get what they need. I would have loved to see Woody roleplaying as Sheriff Woody. We see this a little in toy story 3, but it would have been nice to see it next to buzz. Also Buzz probably would have been OP in this scenario, as he does have future tech and a laser. But imagine Sheriff woody and buzz lightyear talking and working off eachother.
