James Gunn Reveals What's Still Canon in the DCU & Talks Creature Commandos, Batman, and Superman

- Now that we're weeks away from the animated series Creature Commandos, we're officially kicking off the brand-new DC Universe with Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Since the brand's massive shift announcement in 2022, co-CEO James Gunn has been nonstop busy between his involvement on this series and 2025's Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. Considering the multi-hyphenate took over what's now heralded as the DCU after helming one of Marvel Studio's most epic superhero trilogies, it's little wonder this new universe draws so many comparisons and expectations - but in this interview, Gunn sets the record straight.
Creature Commandos, which features the vocal talents of David Harbour, Zoë Chao, Alan Tudyk, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, Viola Davis, and Indira Varma (all of whom could make live-action appearances as their series characters), is the first official project that will restart the on-screen DCU, but fans shouldn't be expecting the same formulaic roadmap as the MCU. Yes, there is an outline of which characters Gunn intends to explore, but nothing is going to be churned out without the perfect script.
In this conversation with Collider's Steve Weintraub, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey and Gunn tell us, "It all comes down to the writing." If the screenplay isn't perfect, the project isn't moving forward. When asked about his iteration of Batman, Gunn says there's no pressure to meet a timeline-specific date. He laments the idea of filmmakers wasting potential on stories with no third act, and drops Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the prime example of a green-lit series that was script-ready. The DC duo also discuss the deeply emotional narrative of Creature Commandos, how "this show, at its core, is really a tragedy," and addresses fan questions like what's still canon from before, what's with Rick Flag Sr.'s hair, and tons more.

His talk about world building and not having the audience do their “homework” to know what’s going on is the best news I could have heard! Easier to get new audiences involved and building a new lived in world sounds so sick. Very Westeros .
I think this is how always was done. A lot of franchises or fantasy/sci-fi worlds don't explained every little bit of the world so they can start the story. They always star with a full blown world and dig deeper in the themes and corners that matter. This is how Harry Potter worked out, Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of Rings, Game of Thrones. And it's a lot easier to do it on screen cuz you don't need to discribe things, just show it. I think the marvel model is the new one and, althrough worked for them, it's a really exausting model of storytelling. And belive me, in my country we have soap operas with 230 episodes 6 days a week. Think Guun is going for the golden standard of Storytelling, build the world to serve the story, not the story explain the world. Audience will pick up in the ride, they always did it. And, just like you, i'm very excited cuz looks like DC new universe will feel a lot more like a organic fantastic world with vibrant collors and unique aesthetic, instead of a pseudo-scifi-esque world like MCU.
How does that even make sense when Batman is starting at Damien? Who is Damien? I thought the Robin name was Dick Grayson. Who are the Creature Commandos? Is that a Universal Monster project? Should I go on or continue to debunk that statement?
@@gohanson27 Your point doesn't make sense because people don't know who Robin is, they just know he is Batman's sidekick. Audiences are smart, they will pick it up along the way that Damien is the fifth to wear the mantle when the explained it to them. They don't have to make 10 movies just to explain each Robin and Batgirl.
Why would people think of Creature Commandos as a Universal Monster project? The only think people are going to think about that series is that is very fun, gory and sad, and they would want more of that IP.
Should I go on or continue to debunk your statement?
@@BrunoVeliusi agree with you. Even in the trailer to the show waller says they arent allowed to use humans anymore and those freaks arent human 😂
And even, correct me if I'm wrong....very DCAU. I remember 10 years ago watching some episodes of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited out of order and I didn't even watch the entire series but irrespective of who showed up in whichever episode I felt both curious as to who this more obscure DC character was and at the same time still able to enjoy them and the narrative of the episodes I saw without having watched all of Superman TAS or whatever. Whereas Marvel be it the cartoons, the MCU or otherwise, to me just feels like an overarching interconnected soap opera saga where everyone and everything is important and you're kinda stuck if you don't watch this episode of X-Men or that Iron Man film or episode of WandaVision.
I just have to applaud Gunn. The new DC Universe could've started with something gritty, realistic, more palatable to the "common consumer". And my man said "Nope, first project is Creature Commandos. And it's gonna be animated."
It is so unapologetically comic booky and I cannot wait for people to be attached to these characters.
It’s a good idea and a nice gentle non pretentious start to the DCU.
I agree man. I know some people are gonna complain but guess what...they always do! Gunn knows comic fans and movie fans so well that I don't think hate really fazes him, he only hears the real constructive critiques. I'm hyped.
The best part is he said the reason why it's started with Creature commandos is cuz was already written and it was good. I love how pragmatic he is. That story about he sending full scripts to the Economos actor and only asking him to do the part whem the show was already written is so awesome.
actually the first is peacemaker, since he said it's canon now
@@joaolucaslopes1961 That is not what he said. That was made to be in the DCEU. He wasn’t CEO of DC Studios when he made that. It’s retroactively canon like The Suicide Squad and even then he said it’s not really canon, just that some version of the same events happened. Creature Commandos is the first official DCU project.
What screams volumes to me is that ever since James and Peter Safran took over DC, there has been ZERO studio interferences with projects, and smooth shooting and production for ALL projects. New castings. SUPER transparent. Starting projects when the screenplay is ready, not rushed out just cause of a release date. The DC Universe is in great hands.
It’s about choosing the right people for projects- imagine being Sony and hiring the writers for Gods of Egypt and thinking Morbius would come out okay THEN REHIRING THEM FOR MADAME WEB
Exactly. Some fans aren’t happy with the way things have been going, but other than that, there’s been no significant issues on any of these productions.
I just hope this translates to good films and TV shows.

They are "the studio"
@@iambuhlockay8007 Superman looks like garbage .. so there's that.
The more Gunn talks about his DCU, the more it reminds me of the DCAU and in particular, Justice League Unlimited and I'm absolutely here for that. I love that he's embracing the idea that this isn't our world, it's a fantasy version of Earth and DC is like Lord Of The Rings or Star Wars or even going all the way back to The Iliad.
he also said peacemaker wasn't canon, we can't believe in nothing he says
@@joaolucaslopes1961 he literally never said that, but just that not everything that happen in peacemaker was canon, but he end up by making everything canon except the justice league cameo
@@costa2794 he said once season 1 wasn't canon. But recently changed his mind
Fr. I'm glad I can relive the DCAU era.
@@joaolucaslopes1961false assumption 🙄
Glad he's not rushing these out. Better late and good
I might come off as extremely biased here, which to be fair, I am, but I hope this franchise will be a success, mostly just because I want a successful Green Lantern Franchise as he's my favorite Superhero.
I mean, you seem the team behind lanterns right? We about to feast
His approach and commitement to sticking to his and Saffran's vision for how DC Studios should approach both the production and creative development of projects fills me with so much hope.
Literally everything he says about DCU sounds perfect imo
Yeah, I think I'm becoming a James Gunn glazer 😂
@Unbrickable27 Honestly everything he said im like "that's exactly what I'd do". Can't wait to see what he's got in store

"STORY FIRST" I love that philosphy that James Gunn has!
DCU IS GONNA BE LIT, SO EXCITED AS A DC FAN... WE'RE BACK BABY!!
Yes we are.
When were we ever here? lmao Comics on the other hand, I think we've actually been bodying the comicbook landscape these last couple years
unfinished scripts, shots fired at Marvel 😂😅
At least Someone has learned from the drama of ali blade movie
Not just MCU, a lot of blockbusters are sadly made this way
Actually it is dumb move, that they announced the movie before waiting to script is Finish and he is shooting himself in the foot by doing peacemaker season 2 while rebooting dcu
Definitely not just Marvel. WB handling DC properties did the same thing. Lucasfilm has been guilty of it, too. And Sony, and pre-acquisition Fox, and so on and so forth. It's just a business model that the industry has come to trust more than they should have, because the industry is primarily run by business people, not artists. It's not even that it never works. The Emperor's New Groove is an early example where throwing away the script and just collectively winging it somehow worked out. The problem isn't that one can't make a good movie that way, it's that it's an unreliable and unpredictable way to do it, that involves a lot more costly trial and error, and there are many ways for it to go too wrong to fix.
My hope is that Marvel, too, will learn this lesson from all the trouble they've had trying to finish Captain America 4 and getting Blade into production. Both of those could conceivably turn out to be great movies at the end of the day, but it certainly could have gone smoother. I'm glad the new DC is starting out right out the gate with this lesson already learned. That should save them a lot of trouble.
@@jacobharris954 That's quite literally the exact opposite of what he said. He never announced a season 2 until the script was finished. Which he would have known first hand considering he was the one that wrote it.
worked for James Gunn on a few projects over the last few years. I will forever be a fan and can't even start to tell you how excited I am for how he builds his DCU. Sadly the only thing he has to conquer is old fans stuck in their visions of the "perfect ..." James is absolutely building something for the next generation of movie goers and story lovers. As long as WB and the fans approach his storytelling with willing hearts it will be perfect.
I’m pumped on the world building. That’s my more favourable story telling. Should give DC its justice that those comics truly deserve.
Superman is gonna be awesome. I haven’t seen my dad this excited for a movie in a long, long time.
Just hope it doesn't flop if it releases too close to Fantastic 4.
@@milanmisic7804 Marvel first needs to worry about Captain America flopping with even more reshoots happening because another Marvel flop will surely impact Fantastic Four's box office. Superman comes out two weeks before FF, so it'll be fine.
Thank god we're getting Peacemaker season 2. Been waiting foreeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvver.
This is all VERY interesting. I love his philosophy on all of this. Even if certain projects don't vibe with certain people we should be getting quality movies and shows which is really what matters most.
What is “quality”? Who’s the arbiter of this so-called “quality”? Whomever it is it won’t always be what you consider quality. So if that person took on that philosophy but it didn’t always appear as quality to you then do you still agree with it? At some point we are all gonna have to realize that not everything is for you… or me… or any one of us. Diversity is the spice of life. I love that James Gunn is in this position, I love what he’s doing. I’m really looking forward to it but while I am the type who will dig all these projects even I will have some that I dig less. We have to be ok with that.
Hey, I understand and agree with your view point but if you read my comment, we're saying the same thing. I acknowledge that there will be some projects that work for some people and not others. But what really matters is that the movies, shows, etc are made well. That's why James taking his time with the scripts, making sure that they're good quality scripts, matters so much. So we can have coherent projects, with well written characters, and so on and so forth. That's what I mean by quality.
Gunn has won me over...his soliloquy on good writing was dope!
Everything Gunn says is just absolutely perfect and goes against all awful trends in contemporary Hollywood. I am so completely rooting for the DCU to take off in a good way.

Soooooooo Glad that James gunn understands the importance of storytelling and a good screenplay
Unfortunately a lot of superhero movies get release dates with out even having written scripts !!
Which is why so many of these big movies fail in terms of quality
Hopefully James gunn will continue with his way of filmmaking and planning 🙏
that's why he said peacemaker wasn't canon, but changed his mind days ago, it's already a mess
@joaolucaslopes1961 well we have to wait to know about that, I think he said season 2 of peacemaker will be Canon to Dcu, and they'll explain about the season 1 situation
But I meant that he cares about good writing and finished screenplays

I'm gonna be SO upset if The Suicide Squad isn't 100% canon to this new DCU cuz its my FAVE dc movie (and fave superhero movie ever tbh) I just fell in love with all the moments and characters, especially bloodsport and ratcatcher 2, who I think both would have so much potential in temporary appearances in peacemaker s2 since they were both so essential to his arc. I'd hate to think the movie basically wasn't "real." so excited for peacemaker s2 though.
They have the freedom to bring back any of those characters at any time if they want to! They will become canon again as soon as they show up. Gunn also likes to play favorites with his creations so I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see bloodsport and ratcatcher 2 again. Or king shark. Probably not Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, though.
I do think it’d be a good option to have Peacemaker and TSS be an elseworld story running alongside the Reevesverse and DCU but I’m fine with them being DCU canon. TSS is my favorite super hero movie too.
Great Interview as always, a lot of fun too. i trust in James Gunns writing..he managed to make me care about a character like Peacemaker even after he brutally killed one of my very favourite characters in the DCEU, Rick Flagg Jnr, now thats the talent he has .im looking forward to the upcoming 3 properties especially being a Supes Stan..these two men are going to kill it. .DC is back!!
lol i was definitely one of those people saying wtf to them making a Peacemaker show. Then me and my friends loved it. It was a nice escape during the pandemic.
I wouldn’t say brutally
Superman better be epic AF.
So basically events similar to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker happened, but aren't 100% canon.
Basically if someone died, like Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad, but his death isn't mentioned or he appears later in the DCU, that means he didn't die in those version of events. Or if like Harley Quinn wasn't shown or mentioned to be part of the Suicide Squad, then that means she wasn't in those events of the film.
Yes, and tbh it’s not that hard to understand. It’s a great idea imo to keep what’s good and abandon what doesn’t work
Yesss
I just assumed there was too many references like Bloodsport shooting superman with a kryptonite bullet, or Peacemaker talking about certain characters for jokes etc and the justice league scene. So it’s kinda like the big events happened, since we know Peacemaker definitely killed Rick Flag so that kinda confirms Starro, and peacemaker s1’s events mostly happened.
I think the “didn’t happen unless it’s mentioned” is to play it safe, but it’s almost entirely true events
Bro nothing James says makes sense. He is freestyling and his fanboys are defending the bs. Gunn doesnt know what's canon

Hellboy is not canon to DC it is a Dark Horse comic set entirely in its own universe. The one time Batman and Star-Man were in a comic with Hellboy it was a one-off. They are in no way related.
Abe Sapien and Hellboy will not be canon to the DCU as they are not a DC comics property.
@ I know, but the character looks so similar. It wouldn’t be the first time they might do a crossover of some sort. Hell Blazer /John Constantine, animal man, doom patrol and swamp thing which were from vertigo, I know DC owns vertigo. Which they brought in the DC heroes and now I think they’re re-creating vertigo or so I heard. Authority is from wild storm which DC acquired. Then there’s milestone comics.
