I saw SLAYER in '91, & it was the best concert I've seen!!!! Dave's the main reason I started listening to SLAYER. His sound and technique is simply thunderous and amazing!!!!!!
Dave is a pefect blend of solid technique & chops and ferocius attitude. Speedwise there are of course faster drummers, but attitude-wise few, if any, can match him. I haven’t seen anybody play Slayer songs better than him. Even though I enjoy drum videos & comments on youtube, very often they ignore this musical part of extreme playing and concentrate too much on speed and technique.
I have a bias toward his power style, also because as a drummer, the quality and sound of beat is key to metal bands' very sound and feel. No discredit to Bostaph, but Slayer is not nor will ever be a finessed or nuanced band so his contribution sounds very mismatched in the context of Slayer, to my ears. I think he has better hands than Lombardo, but without Lombardo, to me, they sound like they are missing the full lower end of their earlier sound spectrum. He was key to what I loved about their bottom-heavy dominant, churning sound. But that is but one opinion of a humble fan and musician.
His Cuban background had a big influence on his playing. Whether you like Cuban music or not, they have a monster sense of rhythm and groove, and that's why his playing is so fluid and musical.
Dave does not use cheat peddles or any certain special type of head. Drummer's have to use certain type of heads for extreme drumming. Dave does not. Most drummer's today have to cheat to be as last as Dave. LoL

There may be many who can play faster nowadays, but there’s just such an energy to his playing that just seems more exciting than many other drummers. He altered the face of metal drumming
His groove is rock solid too, and he can play it all without Pro Tools. Very, very few of the modern faster guys can match him for both of those things.

hi Marthyn, first of all I wanted to say I really, really like your 'drumteacher reacts' videos. They're top notch. Secondly : Dave rules. And third, and you didn't mention this in the video (maybe you didn't know): Dave is left handed. That's also the reason why his tomrolls sound so.... so.... well, so DAVE LOMBARDO ! It might sound stupid, but I asked him during a drumclinic why his rolls sound this way. He replied he didn't know why, or actually didn't understand that I find his drumrolls so fascinating. But a few minutes later he played some stuff, and suddenly he stopped, and told me (and the rest of the audience) he suddenly knew what the reason is: he's actually left handed, and he starts his tomrolls with his lefthand.... If you think about a normal tomroll from tom1 to tom 4 , you'll get Rlrl-Rlrl-Rlrl-RlRl. In his case it could be like this : LrlrL-rLrL-rlrL-rlr. (I think he'll leave out the last note and end with rL on the last tom.) And then think about what happens when he puts some snare hits in between. This explains a lot about his style of drumfills. And I find this fascinating. But aside his drumrolls, this man knows how to add swing and groove to the music like no other. Anyway, I'm looking forward to more of your videos ! Greetings, Paul.
Dave's drumming is precise and clean... Tight sounding actually. And I noticed on the album version of the slayer songs, his drumming sounds dry and crisp like there's no reverb on the mix. But that actually helps in a well defined hitting. Even though he's drumming so fast, I can hear every hit that he's doing. I'm very impressed actually.
I'm an air drummer, does that count for something. :) I still like looking at these types of videos (bass guitar as well) as I like to see them perform in relative isolation to the rest of the music.

Kerry is a douch as a person as is Tom sadly, as proven by their treatment of the best rock drummer bar John Bonham and we all know that. Nevertheless you are right to point to the Guitar Riff and Drum riff combo as the secret to Slayers great strengths. Lets face it though the guitar riff attack is both Kerry and Jeff's deadly double attack. Give the devil his due. Some bands have twin solos; ie Thin Lizzy, Eagles and Iron Maiden; Slayer has twin riffage with the odd freak out solo thrown in to freak out too! As you say, that's why I love them too. Awesome display of a very powerful drummer. Total respect ! Well done on the review too. Never really paid much attention to how high or low a drummer sits. I certainly couldn't handle being that low. One song would wear me out!!
I've never clicked on a link so fast haha. His kit is crazy. 24" kicks wide enough to get those massive toms to drop down between them. Hats super low, but still has snare clearance for power because he pretty much sits his snare drum on the floor. Insane.
That concert was the Big 4 show with Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax at Yankee's Stadium in the Bronx, NY. I was at that show and fortunate to watch Slayer with Dave Lombardo playing with them before he officially left. Such a great show!
Dave looks like a young man behind that kit! I've been listening to Slayer for near 20 years and they're still one of the best extreme metal bands, ever. I'm really digging your videos, Marthyn, you do a great job analysing some incredible drummers. I wouldn't consider myself a drummer but your videos make me want to get something like what you're demonstrating on and play. I'm a guitarist, through and through, but I played steel drums in a college level band in high school, so I'm technically a semi-trained percussionist and have retained most of my technique. I used a German grip a lot, back then, so my snare work seems to favor that, as does my cymbal playing. I suppose I use an American grip, too, as well as some French grip with one hand... I'm the type of person who practices various techniques and uses what is applicable - something that I learned as a self taught guitarist/musician.
Wasn´t there a Gojira/Mario Duplantier video? Is it gone? I wanted to watch it again. Besides, thank you for these videos. I´m not a drummer but a guitar player but I like to learn new/more stuff about drumming with these videos. Thank you.
Dave rules!!! Great breakdown of his technique. Love his old school, balls out power approach. Also, would love to see you do a reaction to Doug Bohn. Drummer for Suffocation on the Pierced From Within album. Here is a drum cam link from a few years ago of him playing one of the songs from that album. th-cam.com/video/Jz5dk7z326Y/w-d-xo.html
It always blows my mind when you get to meet in person musicians who play such extreme aggressive music who are super nice, friendly and humble. You certainly seem that way as well Marthyn. Love watching your videos. ..and I don't play ANY instruments! 🤘😁
Interesting video! I remember when the first Slayer record was released. At that time I never would have expected Dave Lombardo would eventually become an iconic drumming superstar. I also would never have imagined Slayer would ever be playing stadiums in front of such large crowds. The world has changed a lot since then I guess.
Thank you!! This is great! Is groove is amazing. Even though Paul Bostaph is an amazing drummer, Divine Intervention sounds great, i think that Slayer loose some quality with the when Dave left.
Bostaph gets a lot of heat, but yeah, 90% of people just assume it was lombardo. Personally, GHUA is probably my fav Slayer album. Bostaph is a very underrated fluid drummer. Also had the pleasure of seeing John Dette play with them, and that guy is a weapon.
I'm guessing you mean "low to mid spring tension" compared to direct drive pedals and such, am I right? He always says he uses high spring tension. Anyway, GREAT video. I love Dave's drum-playing, I've watched his videos lots of times and you did an extremely good work explaining his techniques! Thanks.
And Dave leaves that joker in the dust--Bostaph CANNOT play double kick! He's too sloppy and his feet are totally out of sync with each other. I fail to see why people think he's so good, here.
@@MaskedRiderChris his sloppiness came with age. In the 90s he was really at the same level of Lombardo. But then he got worse, while Lombardo just got better.
great video! a little addition, if you're a drummer - PLEASE READ THIS - one thing i think could be key to lombardo's sound is his extreme dexterity, if you look closer most of the time he leads double bass parts with his LEFT foot and he plays a lot of fills leading with his left hand also, look at that long hi hat roll at 5:35. i would really like your oppinion whether or not it is a major factor. virtually all drummers' right foot and hand are much stronger and more fluid than their left foot and hand, i'm sure lombardo is not an exception, so i reckon having your stronger limbs play the upbeats would make your fills sound really even pronounced and powerful. there's a video of slayer AOL sessions where the mic on his left bass drum didn't work, and you can really hear his right foot do the upbeats when they play raining blood.

Dave and Jeff were the HEART and SOUL of Slayer. Tom the Voice and Kerry the blind ambition tool. Notice his PLASTIC chains. Kerry is the George Harrison of Slayer or like Bob Weir in the Dead. A good rhythm guitar player but an average songwriter and the bore in the band.
Lombardo is one of my favs. My favorite is his drumming on the song "South of Heaven". But hey, what about Mick "The Human Tornado" Harris, the original drummer of Napalm Death, and mastermind behind the crazy beats of Scorn? His sound was SO HEAVY on Napalm Deaths last couple albums with him. Like Lombardo, he is another true standout drummer. Igor Cavalera?
Igor top shout, saw him at Donington 94 his power & double bass work was outstanding
aweshome dave Lombardo is amazing player sounds supercredible
Marthyn, it'd be a great idea to analyse Nick Pierce, drummer of Unearth. Using traditional grip for metal music, that's rad.

I'm a guitar player and I really enjoyed listening to you speak. Cheers from USA
As usual thanks for your videos! I'd really like to see an analysis about Trym form EmpEroR... maybe the rehearsal of Ye Entrancemperium.... It would be great!!!! Or something from Jamie St. Meurat from Ulcerate.... I hope! Thanks Marthyn!!!
One of the best drummers in the world!! Slayer will never be the same. Especially with Jeff gone too
Id like to see a video on David Grey- Ackercocke & Voices
And the one and only Nick Barker
Pls post the youtube url of the live vid (incl. footcam) you want
Very nice analysis, I enjoyed watching this video. Not the biggest fan of Slayer, but you break down the music in a way I can understand and appreciate the talent behind it. Thanks and much love!
Gojira's Mario Duplantier ? Would be amazing
Lombardo is one of my all time favorites
I saw Motorhead with Megadeth, and I was impressed with Motorheads drummer! Hard hitting like a machine.
Well he was formerly playing in King Diamond, dude is a beast of a drummer
@@frmadeira that makes sense, because King Diamond is one of my favorites!!!
Lemmy called Mikkey Dee "best drummer in the world" for a reason. Though I prefer Philthy Animal.
@@CryingZombie666 Phil is the best drummer he kicks ass R.i.p motörhead

Dave is a drumming GOD! and my personal favorite drummer
I can never play double bass using only my calf muscles...I lose all control,my feet start twitching..I have to use mainly my weight and only a percentage of my calf muscles

Awesome display of a very powerful drummer. Total respect ! Well done on the review too. Never really paid much attention to how high or low a drummer sits. I certainly couldn't handle being that low. One song would wear me out!!
lombardo is a beast
I've never clicked on a link so fast haha. His kit is crazy. 24" kicks wide enough to get those massive toms to drop down between them. Hats super low, but still has snare clearance for power because he pretty much sits his snare drum on the floor. Insane.
true that!
Danny Herrera from Napalm Death, the godfather of extreme metal drumming
@Luke Smith mick harris wasnt comparable, danny herrera is far superior
I like Mick Harris but different types of drummers
So good to watch. Such a great style, so fluid. Insane
Anylizing Brann Dailor, mastodon.
..Would be great
Gooooooood call
That concert was the Big 4 show with Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax at Yankee's Stadium in the Bronx, NY. I was at that show and fortunate to watch Slayer with Dave Lombardo playing with them before he officially left. Such a great show!
How about some Vinny Paul..
@z k What!?
Vinnie paul was just a good metal drummer. Not that great!
Fuster Cluck i think he was good but not on top. I saw pantera and sepultura back in the early 90’s. I think igor cavalera was a little better live.
Great!

Great video Marthyn. I watched one of your drum videos with your dreads you are incredible. And I love the analysis in your clips
I love how Dave plays Paul’s drum parts better than Paul does
It always blows my mind when you get to meet in person musicians who play such extreme aggressive music who are super nice, friendly and humble.
You certainly seem that way as well Marthyn. Love watching your videos. ..and I don't play ANY instruments!
🤘😁
Alex Rudinger... pretty much any video of his.
Dave Lombardo is sick man, love this great drummer.
React to jay weinberg
Interesting video! I remember when the first Slayer record was released. At that time I never would have expected Dave Lombardo would eventually become an iconic drumming superstar. I also would never have imagined Slayer would ever be playing stadiums in front of such large crowds. The world has changed a lot since then I guess.
That's Yankee Stadium...👍👍
Dave lombardo is amazing
Charlie Benante/Richard Christy would be great. And of course Mike Portnoy/ Neil Peart
what the hell, not NEARLY enough mention of Peart! thank u... but after mike? ;)
Didn't think that order through mate. Sorry about that :).
Both great drummers though.
@@mickeydrago9401 what about saving the best for last?
I would also like to hear his thoughts on Charlie Mike and Neil. IDK about Christy

The grand finale...
The one hand drum roll before announcing Peart?
I think mention of John Bonham was light as well...
So lucky to have seen him with Slayer and Dead Cross!
Hail Dave
Amazing man, very helpful! Cheers from Brazil....
You should react to Vinnie Paul playing Becoming by Pantera.
Or Primal concrete sledge by Pantera
You deserve way more views my dude ! Great video.
Thank you!! This is great! Is groove is amazing. Even though Paul Bostaph is an amazing drummer, Divine Intervention sounds great, i think that Slayer loose some quality with the when Dave left.
Bostaph was the drummer on God hates us all.
@@toddtab3048 thank you. Didn't know that, only known about Divine Intervention album.
This videos are so fun to watch...

Thanks.
Great video and I love your reaction channel. Shame the video was of a song Paul Bostaph originally recorded
thank you!
And Dave leaves that joker in the dust--Bostaph CANNOT play double kick! He's too sloppy and his feet are totally out of sync with each other. I fail to see why people think he's so good, here.
@@MaskedRiderChris all opinion but Bostaph is one of my favourite drummers second to Dave McClain
@@MaskedRiderChris his sloppiness came with age. In the 90s he was really at the same level of Lombardo. But then he got worse, while Lombardo just got better.

Man Dave's a legend. Was a great show I was there. 😁
True that
I really like how you explain each aspect.
Lombardo is just amazing!
great video! a little addition, if you're a drummer - PLEASE READ THIS - one thing i think could be key to lombardo's sound is his extreme dexterity, if you look closer most of the time he leads double bass parts with his LEFT foot and he plays a lot of fills leading with his left hand also, look at that long hi hat roll at 5:35. i would really like your oppinion whether or not it is a major factor. virtually all drummers' right foot and hand are much stronger and more fluid than their left foot and hand, i'm sure lombardo is not an exception, so i reckon having your stronger limbs play the upbeats would make your fills sound really even pronounced and powerful. there's a video of slayer AOL sessions where the mic on his left bass drum didn't work, and you can really hear his right foot do the upbeats when they play raining blood.
