      Top tip, before doing a reaction on someone search for their name on your own channel 😁 - Fun pokes aside - love the channel, great stuff! 👍 - while I'm here, one stand out drummer who amazed was Terry Bozzio when I first saw him in 2002! - He's one of TH-cam's least understood drummers it seems so it'd be cool to get a professional drummers view on him! - Djondon is pretty cool - alas split into two short parts on TH-cam!

      There is also a live drum cam of Dave Lombardo playing Slayer's Angel of Death. The song is a fast one (for 1986) but he looks all laid back and comfy. He even shows off a little. th-cam.com/video/ManyDSIC8fQ/w-d-xo.html

      Modern Metal drummers ( and even late era Punk drummers) no longer employ a proper D-Beat. Between the technique evolving into a blast beat and the fact that triggers cannot pick up on "ghost" notes involved we may never hear it again.

    You can tell by James’ attitude, smile and the way he looked at the other band members, this was something I’m sure he’d imagined a hundred times - Metallica with Dave Lombardo on the drum throne. As important as Lars is to Metallica, particularly with the business and arranging the songs, he hasn’t been practicing his drumming since probably the late ‘80’s. You can tell by the way he effortlessly pummelled the double bass parts at the end that Dave, who is the same age, give or take as Lars, pounds like he did in the 80’s, and probably better.
    I’m sure there is a world where Lars still does his arranging, business stuff, maybe even records, but Dave Lombardo plays live. Dyers Eve as it’s meant to be played!

      That is a tight performance, and I like that Lars does the breakdown flams, but it’s not the sheer ‘80’s pummel that Dave Lombardo did, or like Lars did back then:

      First off, Love Lars. He is the Ace Frehley of drums....technically not great but influenced a whole generation of players. That said, it is no secret that Lombardo is a significantly better drummer than Lars technically speaking. There has to be a massive part of James that realized how much better this "feels" to play with Lombardo (even unrehearsed and not completely knowing the song). For James to finally be able to follow the drummer and trust that tempo and transitions will be perfect. As a guitarist who has played with good and bad drummers, I know from experience that this is not a small thing at all. Again, love Lars but damn....it's hard to not wonder, what if????

    I was at the show, it was the Download festival in the UK, Lars was ill and they decided to do the show regardless as Metallica was headlining and there was a massive crowd. Dave, Joey and Lars' drum tech each played a couple of songs. It was by far the best Metallica gig I've ever been to. They only delayed the start of the set by about about an hour while all the stand in drummers were rehearsing back stage before it kicked off.

    You're not wrong about these guys having fun playing with Metallica. But you are under-estimating how much fun Metallica is having playing with these guys. Not trying to be a jerk, but both are major upgrades over Lars. And in Dave's case, just as accomplished as Metallica, at least within the metal community. If there's one thing Slayer had a clear advantage of over Metallica, it was drumming. Lombardo is on the mount Rushmore of metal drummers. Can't wait till you cover more of him. Here's my suggestion: "Hostage to Heaven", by his post Slayer band, Grip Inc.

A whole bunch of Scottish singers came along at no notice and filled in on vocals, including the singer from Biffy Clyro. Given the size/profile of WH and the size of the venue (King Tuts) made this achievement all the more impressive!

But when Joey came out, woah, that was the tightest I've ever heard Metallica who are insanely tight anyway. And the drum tech did fade to black, he was like a carbon copy of Lars. What a gig, one of my favourite Metallica performances ever.

    Andrew, I was at this gig-the 2004 Download Festival in the U.K. Lars Ulrich was unexpectedly stranded in Germany, creating a significant challenge for the band. In a remarkable display of camaraderie and talent, they quickly rallied some of their old friends to step in and fill the void. Among them were the legendary Dave Lombardo and Joey Jordison, along with Lars’s drum technician, who took on the monumental task of keeping the beat.
    Metallica was the headlining and closing act for the final night. However, due to the drum crisis, they emerged on stage approximately an hour and a half behind schedule. The tension was palpable, and they delivered a performance that was nothing short of spectacular. Lombardo and Jordison, with their incredible stick skills, showcased the essence of drumming that Lars could barely match. It was a night that highlighted the power of music and the resilience of a band facing unexpected challenges. I believe the setlist was adapted around the songs all the drummers were comfortable playing.

    i dont hate Metallica, im just disappointed in Lars lack of respect, lack of interest, for what he does. he may write, he may rehearse, but he admits he doesnt care, and doesnt practice ON HIS OWN. Dave cares and it shows in his playing. and (RIP) Joey cared too. if Lars has some sort of physical limitation and hes trying to "soldier on" maybe he should consider other things like FFDPs original drummer did. but if theres nothing otherwise wrong with him, he needs to show some respect, get better, and more consistent. their fans deserve it, and so does the rest of the band.

      he never was a good drummer but back in their heyday he just compensated for that with lots of heart and practice. he barely reached the level he needed and it was always a big stretch and lots of effort and as he grows old he just't have that fire anymore and since he can't rely on his skill, that's basically why have have what we have now. it's not gonna change. Lombardo here has shown what somebody with real drum skill can do with this song, even in his old age nowadays he could do it just the same.

    Battery is the neighbourhood of San Francisco that all the Bay Area thrash bands lived, worked and played. James wrote the lyrics when the band decided to relocate to LA after they signed with Elektra Records. The shot of the band on the couch on the back of the Master of Puppets album was in the house they rented in Battery.
    Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Death Angel and Metallica were known as the Bay Area Bashers long before there was a Big 4.

    hey this goes back to the old adage of "always learn the songs of the bands you are touring with". that goes for the crew / roadies /techs and for the opening bands when they get a break to tour /' open with a Big band. You never know when they opportunity will arise and it will be your time to shine.
    so many musicians got their big break, by filling in last minute when a headliner suddenly couldn't perform. thats your opportunity to say "yeah I know the songs. I'll play"!
    A college friend lost his drumming job in his band when he couldn't play an important gig, and last minute the girlfriend of the sound guy said she knew all the songs, she played the gig. 3 months later they got a record deal because of that gig, they kept the girl and fired his ass.

    • @blppt
      @blppt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually Dave had to learn the songs from scratch before the show---he likely never played a Metallica song in his life, and nobody knew Lars would get sick. That's why he left and Joey came in---he had to go backstage and learn more songs. But Joey, who grew up playing Metallica, was so good and knew all the songs, there was no reason to force Dave to go back and learn new songs every 2 songs in the set.

    My guess on what Dave was thinking about before and after, was "dude.. I'm stoked to play these tunes with my OG buddies", and after it was "hell yeah... that was a rush". Dave and Metallica go back to the early 80s together. This was just a jam fest for him. Joey on the other hand, wasn't part of that scene, but he was an extremely seasoned drummer by this time. I'm sure he wasn't nervous. However... I think the nostalgic feeling that Dave got wasn't shared the same by Joey. Joey was probably more star struck by it than Dave was.

    I know right around the Reign in Blood album Dave Lombardo quit Slayer for a little bit but came back to the band. But here's the deal I truly believe if Cliff Burton wouldn't have died he would have convinced the guys in Metallica to fire Lars and higher Dave Lombardo. I mean cliff was the leader that band not Lars or James. I think he was on the verge of convincing them to get rid of Lars. And Dave was free from Slayer for a Time. So if Cliff hadn't died I think after they came back from that European tour for Master of Puppets and he would have survived they would have changed drummers. But he didn't survive and they never got rid of Lars and the rest is history. And of course Lombardo was only away from Slayer for a short time and he went back to the band. But of course I think in 92 he left the Slayer for good until 2008 when he came back for Christ illusion.
    But I think he left Slayer because he wanted to be close to his growing family I know his wife had had a child and he wanted to be a father.
    This is actually what Wikipedia said and this is what I've read......Lombardo left in 86', during their tour to promote Reign in Blood, stating, "I wasn't making any money. I figured if we were gonna be doing this professionally, on a major label, I wanted my rent and utilities paid." Tony Scaglione of Whiplash was enlisted to replace Lombardo. Unhappy with the change, Rick Rubin repeatedly called Lombardo asking his return. Lombardo initially refused before eventually returning to the band in 1987. Lombardo was basically the spokesperson I mean he came up with the Slayer logo he was the one that got them signed to Metal Blade records under the tutelage of producer Brian slagel. After they made show no mercy that became the highest selling album on Metal Blade records. And of course they made one more album on metal blade hell awaits and then Dave Lombardo was the one that got in the deal on Def Jam recordings and Rick Rubin for the next recording of Reign in Blood. Without Dave Lombardo Slayer wouldn't have gotten very far. But imagine if Cliff hadn't died and Metallica came back from the European part of their Puppets Tour and they hired Dave Lombardo holyshit, it would have been amazing. But it is what it is. I mean Dave Lombardo left Slayer 1992 so it would have worked out perfect being in Metallica for him. But he never joined Metallica and Lars Ulrich just got worse and worse on the drums. And it shows in their music

      Lars is perfect for what Metallica needs. And that is someone who supports James riffs without making his drum parts too busy and complicated. Hetfield has often described his guitar playing style as playing drums on guitar. A drummer like Lombardo or any other one except Lars would only get in the way of that with their styles. There are millions of great drummers out there but there are clearly none that fit Metallica better than Lars Ulrich does

    Seeing as Dave Lombardo was the drummer for Slayer, not just anther band, but the OG of the Big 4, I doubt that stepping down in the world of drumming to sit in Lars seat for a couple of songs even blipped his radar, much less was a career highlight. Maybe playing with the Original Misfits, but not Metallica. Here is a cold fact. Dave was able to sit down and play Battery and Four Horsemen with no real practice. There is no way in hell Lars could fill in for him in Slayer.

    • @roscopervis

      That’s nowhere near true about inventing double bass. In fact, at the start of Slayer, one of their young lighting guys gave Dave Lombardo some double bass lessons to help him along. That lighting guy is now a very famous drummer in his own right by the name of Mr Eugene Hoglan.

    • @julianjohncraft3091
      @julianjohncraft3091 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He actually didn't invent double-pedalling. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich's contemporary, was the first, more or less around 1935, though it didn't much catch on with others. Corky Laing of Mountain reintroduced the practice, using differently sized bass drums, around 1972. (Listen to the still amazingly heavy, athletic "Never In My Life.") Many others then copied the practice for kit looks, but hardly for performance. Only a rare handful used it as a staple, with Neil Peart atop that. It wasn't until the new metal era in 1980-83, as the speed of Punk got absorbed into the old Hard Rock and became Metal as a name, with the styles of Metal proliferating, that doublekick became de rigueur. Also, Slayer had a niche audience, and a much lower profile than many of the others about whom there were far greater sales, more ears, and more media: Motorhead, Metallica, Motley Crue, Van Halen, etc. All double-bass players, better known, more seen, and chronologically ahead of Mr. Lombardo. Sure, you may adore him, naturally wanting any and all accolades be accorded his greatness, but two-bass pioneer cannot be one of them.
      And here we are.
