How well Ale and Pau can groove is often underestimated, Ale has incredible timing, more so than Pau, which is rare for the bassist and that I believe is creating something special in the groove, in the fact that Pau doesn't have to support the whole weight of the rhythm/timing alone, and this lets her relax and concentrate on syncing with Ale, which creates an incredible synergy. 🤯
Anybody that can isolate and elevate Ale’s bass is a hero, I’m sure for a lot of us. Their most recent album really does bring it forward a lot. It’s always been prominent going back to their earliest recordings, but we’re greedy and always want more bass, kind of like the old “more cowbell” skit. There are some videos of Ale when she was very young with her bass teacher and mentor Pablo Gonzalez, playing some impressive jazz bass work. Pablo was instrumental in nudging the band to try writing their own songs, and holy cow, was that ever a good idea! Like a fish to water.
Ale only plays what needs to be played. It's their thing. They play what they feel needs to be a part of the song. No frills. It's just about the music. ❤️💀🤘 The Warning only plays music at a level that connects. They feel what they throw in our face.
Saw a brief interview with Pablo (from a while back) and he said they were composing monsters. I'm so glad he worked with them instead of just with Ale.
You're not alone in thinking the bass was too low in this mix. Someone else remixed it to pump up Ale's bass - and the mix is much better for it! Its been mentioned in various other reactions that Flea's studio track needed to be fixed in post production because his timing was off. That's not going to be a problem for Ale the human metronome.
Great reaction and analysis. I, too, could listen to the isolated bass and drum tracks “all day long”! I could also do the same with isolated Dany tracks. To paraphrase another famous rock star, these girls “kick maximum ass”.
Just a note: When I mention "add some bass", I'm only talking 4 or 5 dB. I'm not talking rolling down the street with the windows vibrating! While this live performance mix sounded great in the verses, I do think the bass was under-mixed (and lost a bit), in the chorus. The difference is subtle, as audio mixing is about small changes... :-p
Check out Don-Music channel. He is in complete agreement with you and enhanced the bass as well. In a recent interview, Pau said that You Oughta Know is her absolute most favorite FU breakup song. One thing about The Warning, when they do a cover, they strive to be as exact to the original as possible. Even when they were 14, 12, and 9yrs old when they covered Enter Sandman by Metallica (it wasn't perfect but better than almost any cover I have heard). These girls are roll models for many young girls, so we at TWA were not surprised that they went PG. They have a song, Consume, that has the F word in it and their mom was disappointed with them, but their dad listened to the song lyrics and agreed that it was best for the song, reluctantly. I thing your video will get multiple 2nd and 3rd views. It was an excellent reaction video!
Pau gets to be a little chill, but still every beat sounds just perfect. It’s funny seeing her back there with her sunglasses looking about as cool as humanly possible. I haven’t mentioned Dany because she is the elephant in the room, absolutely slays it. Thanks so much, it’s great to see these kinds of breakdowns.
I'm something of a late-comer to the army. Saw the Metallica cover some years ago, admired it and then promptly forgot about The Warning. Then I accidentally clicked on the wrong link one day and involuntarily listened to Choke. Took me a while to realise that it was the same girls who played the Enter Sandman cover. Been a fan ever since. Anyway, I'm 71 and spent about 15 years playing in cover bands doing weddings, pubs and parties. The best band I was in was a trio and we had bookings up the wazoo. At one point the bass player broke his arm and we had to bring a ringer in to cover for him. It was only then that I realised that I (we, really) had relied on our bassist in so many ways, because the guy we brought into play while his arm was healing had little sense of timing. Since our drummer was also our main singer, the bass player had driven the timing of our songs (a bit like The Warning, really ...). Were we ever glad when our regular bass player managed to rejoin us! Alejandra is a fantastic bass player (well, they're all great on their instruments). She's also the "showman" of the band, moving around to keep up the crowd interest when the other two are doing their thing. I honestly don't know how she can squat and swing around as she does while never missing a beat on her bass. She doesn't get the credit she's due for that. She does a lot of the backing vocals despite not really having a rock'n roll voice and does it well. I wish that the people filming their concerts would concentrate more on her performance than they do! Great breakdown of this song, Audiology!
I'm an older guy as well, also played and worked for bands, you are right, meter and timing are so important, if a player has no "feel", it's a sign that perhaps music isn't the right fit for them!
I thought that bass line sounded cool, but hearing it in isolation with drums it sounds even more awesome - sounds like it could have been the soundtrack to a Shaft movie from the 70’s. And what Rock fan is going to complain about more bass? 😎👍
The Bass-line is great: you should compare it to the original; you'll definitely hear a difference. Ale, a preeminent Jazz Bassist playing Rock, modified it, infusing it with progressions inspired by her greatest influence, legendary Jazz Bassist Jaco Pastorius. Flea, the original bassist, couldn't get the timing right despite many studio takes, so his bass-line was remastered/run through an LA-2A compressor. Ale plays this live like it's nothing. (I fully expected Ale to drink a Pepsi and not miss a note). Dany's spectacular vocals capture Alanis' angst, ramp aggression way up, and Dany plays Dave Navarro's guitar part. Pau, dressed like Trinity from the Matrix, does great drumming with brushes; playing in a style not typical for her; augmenting Ale's Funky/Jazzy vibe. Despite how shy Ale is, she's fearless and breathtakingly talented, so you're right, no one should try to have Flea "compete" with Ale; "It's not Fair!" Thanks for the reaction. (In 2020, Alanis Morissette "Jagged Little Pill" engineer Chris Fogel revealed that despite numerous studio takes for "You Oughta Know", Flea had totally screwed-up every single Bass performance in every single take. As Fogel explained: “Flea was way out of time on You Oughta Know”. Fogel: "The tracks were brought back to me and then we had to really time a lot of it. Particularly Flea. Flea was way out of time! And if he’s watching then I apologise! But, That Is Not Your Performance, that’s your performance Timed Through The Genius of The ADAT and the BRC [Big Remote Control]...Flea was way on top! That’s exactly what it was...Flea was way out of time, and Glenn figured...Flea was over a quarter-note on top!")
Bass is great. I like their version of 'The Pretender" better than the original because in the Foo Fighters version the bass gets buried under the guitars.
Thank you so much for doing this! Too much bass? That’s why I wanted you to do this song! I can’t wait for your channel to blow up because as somebody else had commented, “You deserve it!” When TWA finds out you’re doing this, it won’t take long! That was a quick “week or so”!😂 Thank you again! ⚡️🤘
Great Breakdown. Subbed for more of The Warning. Please Break Down "Hell You Call A Dream LIVE from the Pepsi Center" You love Bass, Ali will blow you away. And Dany Vocals are totally Next Level from choke or any other...imop of course Pau's kicking total butt...
The PG swaps were on the originals released in countries where radio ( which was still a force then) wouldn't play the "Xrated" original album versions. It was in Australia. Possibly was in Mexico as well?
No such thing as too much of Ale's Bass. The way she crushes it and makes it look easy, at her age just proves she is a prodigy. Dany's vocals are insane, and to play Dave Navarro's guitar lines at the same time show's why she is the Queen. Pau is Pau, 'nuff said.
Fun Fact: The touring musicians for Alanis, not only Taylor, included Chris Chaney later of Jane's Addiction, a killer bass player himself. Here's a version of Taylor and Chris rocking it. th-cam.com/video/jVv_TSAzb6Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yLXQcAqEh9p9whAq&t=400 I particularly love the little "smear" and bass walk just after it, that Ale gets at 7:16. I don't think it's intentional. Things like that just happen when an accomplished musician gets into the groove. Enjoying your breakdowns....:)
Dany is a vocal daredevil, she will take on anything. I’m not sure if she really sounds like Alanis, but she certainly sounds like she has Alanis’ attitude.
I understand why you brought the bass forward for your putposes, but I think the original mix is perfect. I would love to see you react to their two versions of Enter Sandman by Metalica. First, the version they did as kids in 2013 and then their latest from the Pepsi Center Concert. Now, if you feel generous with your time, throw the official music video in between the two and make it a threefer! After having done the cover ay the ages of 9, 11, and 14, Metalica invited them to do the song for their album, Blacklist, celebrating the 39th anniversary of the Black album. The girls came up with a new arrangement and recorded it with Alesia Cara. They made it their own while still showing some resoect for the original.
At first I was all "Who the hell is that chick in the thumbnail with them???" 🤣 I think you had the bass up a little too high in some parts... maybe a happy medium between yours and the original would hit the sweet spot.
To break out the audio stems, I use a web site called "LALAL.AI". I then mix them back together in Cakewalk (any DAW would work), and sync to the original video, and there you go! ;-)
"Doctored" might be a strong word, the minute you try and isolate the stems, you end up with a copy that is lacking a lot of fidelity the original had. In fact, sometimes the only way it sounds right after you reassemble the stems, is to play them together, as some of the missing frequencies and harmonics from the one you want to isolate, end up in a different stem. No matter how good the tool, separating stems from a full mix, isn't perfect, nor offers the sonic clarity and fidelity of the original, not by a mile. If I am to try and isolate, I do have to re-mix, so "doctored" is simply a necessary evil in order to get the isolation I am looking to highlight...
@@audiology411 - to a non musical person and without knowledge of the process of what you do to make these videos, doctored is the perfect word for me. But anyhow, thanks for what you do, it looks like it takes quite a bit of time to do. I do appreciate hearing the separated sounds.
It's hard to get thru the day without The Warning in my ears.. I think this is the best trio around today.. Excellent band. 🌎✌️
DAT BASS DOH. Ale killled it! She is so chill too. Love your breakdowns.

I didn't know the original. Since this dropped, I've gone and listened to the original twice.
To me, this is better.
Definitely better than the original mv. I watched both just recently.

All of the performances from this SiriusXM session would be fun to break down like this.
The Warning es simplemente el mejor trío de rock del planeta ,sus covers son tan buenos que superan a los temas originales
