The Who worked because Pete Townsend was very sensitive to the barrage coming from and Entwistle and Moon, and played accordingly. And also, the songwriting was superb, and superbly tailored to the band. ~ "Huge Ballsack of Musical Mediocracy” is so poetic, I wept. Now get off my lawn!
The Who worked also because they wrote intelligent lyrics that still resonate with people today. That can't be said about Van Halen - a band that wrote lyrics like "ice cream man"
Here are ten bands I hate : 10. Pearl Jam 9. King Diamond 8. Pulp 7. Muse 6. U2 5. Wasp 4. Guns N' Roses 3. the Flaming Lips 2. Mötley Crüe 1. Limp Bizkit
in my high school in Poland in 90's Limp Bizkit and Green Day were most hated band. People loved AC/DC, Motorhead, Metallica, Megadeth and Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and all that grunge rock.
Limp Bizkit were DESIGNED to be hated by the elitist crowd, that was their whole point. Even the name was designed to draw mockery. Personally I think they're loud stupid and obnoxious- and I kinda like it.
Thanks for the bobcat reference. Off to the doctor's I did go Balls and all I had to show Doctor said: "I'm sorry, mate, 'Fraid we'll have to amputate."
The Eagles - bang on. Made the mistake of paying a lot of money to see them a few years ago. Two and a half hours of them standing like statues trotting out one long drone. A proper snore fest. The most boring band in the world.
Entertaining video, some of your observations and comparisons are very funny. Bit confusing though when you are listing bands you hate, but several of them released one or more records that you really enjoyed.
"Hysteria" is still miserable over cooked dirge, and the most disappointing follow up the great energetic pop metal of "High and Dry" and "Pyromania" albums. Too long, over produced, oddly joyless and weak limp material like "Dogs of war". Even though it was a massive album, it was the beginning of the end for the band that have limped along for the last 37 years but still make millions a year from touring the nostalgia market for superannuated late boomers and early Gen xers and their 20 to 30 yr old kids that get a free ticket to join their aging parents nostalgic whims.
Part Fears 2 is a masterpiece of the early 80s, it's the record I always look to as one of the last great individual uniques songs before the 80s gave us the first signs we were drifting into a corporate ice age and live aid confirmed it and now with this Taylor Swift, Sheeran and the like it feels like that compact perma-ice that even the reemergence of the sun into the musical hemisphere would have trouble melting. Mind you Party Fears 2 is that record you'd be careful not to play in the vicinity of most modern people because you just know it would get right under their skin but there remains a raw beauty to it that retains something mysterious that still seemed possible to a young man in 1982. And Martha Ladly on keyboards on Top of the Pops, what more can I say. Taylor Swift indeed!!
@@mcwulf25 That's one of the things I liked about it. It seemed deliberately designed to alienate mainstream listeners, perfectly combining a melodic pop sensibility with a punk ethos while confusing the hell out of everyone.

I don't agree with all of your criticisms here, but because you explain them I understand them. And actually I feel the same way exactly, for exactly the same reasons, about some of them. Keep going mate, some lovely one-liners in there again 🙂
The Associates were incredible! Billy was a one off who unfortunately took his own life. Very unkind critique I felt. In fact downright nasty and disrepectful.
Really love to hear your opinions in these vids, Barry. You always manage to keep it sober when you describe your beefs with these bands which is how opinions should be omitted about music. Respect
I've found myself disagreeing with a few of these picks but I wholeheartedly agree with Foo Fighters. They are so mediocre. I did enjoy their cover of Down in the park though.
"the reason the critics hate us and love Evis Costello is because they look like Elvis Costello!"DLR. in your case you'd give Costello a run for his money in the ugly department😅😂
Just subscribed because I just found your channel. We agree on much though your music/band knowledge is much deeper and broader than mine. Your descriptions both positive and negative have me alternately laughing myself ill and admiring your powers of description of good music. You have me listening to great and execrable music. I will tune in often and spread the word to music lovers.
How old is Barry Robinson? I can’t quite work it out, sometimes it sounds as if he was already old enough to know what’s what in the early 70s during the growth of program rock, next he seems to be talking about still being at school at the start of the 80s; bit of an enigma, really!
Can you do a critique of the 00s post-Britpop music scene in the UK? There’s so many bands and artists I despise from that time I’d love to hear your opinions on them.
Good list other than The Happy Mondays. I quite like them, just my opinion though. You mentioned Queens of the Stone Age when talking about the Foo Fighters. They are one band who I could never get my head around and could never understand their appeal. Funny enough, I have seen them live a few times; at festivals mainly. I find them quite dull myself
I don't listen to any of these bands either. I can appreciate how good EVH was technically on guitar, but I dislike listening to their music. Like Motley Crue, it always felt, well, shallow and without a soul to me.
Great video as usual. I am a geek and scholar on all types of rock music. Especially 60's-80's. But, the Associates?? Never even heard of them And I am aware of hundreds of obscure bands..
Agree wholeheartedly with Elton. Maybe his early 70s output was ok, but I can't even bring myself to give a listen to one of those albums. I'm so put off by his 80s pap , Sacrifice and Blue Eyes and dross of that ilk. Queen post 70s I pretty much dismiss too. I can't stand 'It's a kind of magic' and I do feel Freddie's vocals are overrated.
Right off the bat my favourite band at 10 bemused me a bit, but as much as I hate to admit it I can see where you’re coming from. Even I’ve thought their last two albums have been pretty dire, but I’ll defend almost anything they’ve done before that point. Always respect the no bullshit approach.
'self esteem' is a good song. 'smash' was a huge album 30 FREEKIN' YEARS AGO & really made a fukkton of money for epitaph & is prob a reason why bad religion is still a going concern. hearing 'come out and play' on the radio those 30 years ago was not the worst thing either.
my brother-in-law fixed an appliance at Billy MacKenzie's home near Dundee shortly before his untimely death..... he was severely depressed by all accounts..... a genuine one-off tho for sure !
It's tempting to make a list of bands/performers I don’t like as much as the consensus. Like Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynnrd and Van Morrison. There was a noughties band I detested called Scouting for Girls too.
Haha to the Muse hatred! But after listening to them repeatedly on my local Rock Radio channel (it's on all the time, and I never got around to tell my DAB radio to lock down other channels...), I finally realized why I both hated and loved them! Originally they sounded great, but then I started feeling that the singer was actually singing both on the out-breath AND the in-breath, which was why the singing/lyrics sounded so weird/irritating. And yet, there are so many places where he doesn't sound that way, and the music itself is otherwise so very good for an old prog/heavy/hard rocker like me.
Wow, quite an eclectic mix, but then as I've said before, your wide and knowledgeable grasp of historical music has always impressed me. I on the other hand, have been moved through the years by musicians who at a particular moment, reflected my life, at a critical life change. Bullet points if you will. My lists therefore, will always be shorter, my range less broad. Nonetheless, the fathom of those moments are just as important and central to my life. Just thought I'd pop that in 😁☯️🌱
Oh my God. 💯 on The Cranberries. I really did enjoy the first album. Especially at the time it came out. It was quite refreshing when compared to everything else at the time. But by the second album I was done. That constant shrieking on Zombie had me ready to blow my brains out. And for some reason every cover band on the planet has that song in their repertoire. A sure fire way to get me to leave the joint. 😂
Agree, I thought Linger was good. In fact I heard it the other day and I enjoyed it, but Zombie always irritated me. But apparently we are not appreciating the ancient Celtic tradition in her vocals.
I love Muse. Saw them live twice. Awesome. But I find it sort of fashionable for critics to dislike them. As for "yodeling shtick" of Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries) - it's actually strongly rooted in Irish tradition. This kind of singing is basically a Celtic funeral lament called keening. Motley Crue though... they're shite.

Love your description of The Associates ! The only track I like of theirs is Blue Soap, mind you it's 3 minutes longer than it need be
The Who worked because Pete Townsend was very sensitive to the barrage coming from and Entwistle and Moon, and played accordingly. And also, the songwriting was superb, and superbly tailored to the band. ~ "Huge Ballsack of Musical Mediocracy” is so poetic, I wept. Now get off my lawn!
I’m just one minute in, and IF he says that he doesn’t like The Who, then I’m unsubscribed and out.
@@shizuokaBLUES He isn't mad!!
The Who worked also because they wrote intelligent lyrics that still resonate with people today. That can't be said about Van Halen - a band that wrote lyrics like "ice cream man"
Getting In Tune is my all time fav Who song that never gets talked about enough. Pete's magnum opus if you will.
@@Neodude991 Moonie goes nuts at the end of that one
Oasis is the worst band in the history of rock.
eh?
I agree
@@Brian_Boru to say Oasis are a rock band is an insult to real rock bands like The Who
No no no. I’m sure there’s another band er….westlife?
Oh yeah 666% correct ❤
Here are ten bands I hate :
10. Pearl Jam
9. King Diamond
8. Pulp
7. Muse
6. U2
5. Wasp
4. Guns N' Roses
3. the Flaming Lips
2. Mötley Crüe
1. Limp Bizkit
I agree with eight of those. I have a little time for Motley Crue and Pulp had a certain charm.
W.A.S.P. and King Diamond don't belong on that list, but I'm with you on the others.
in my high school in Poland in 90's Limp Bizkit and Green Day were most hated band.
Flaming lips are a good band the rest are poor.
Thanks for the bobcat reference. It jogged my memory and I recalled this delightful little ditty that me and me mates used to sing when we was nippers:
"When I was young I had no sense
I caught my balls on a barbed wire fence.
Off to the doctor's I did go
Balls and all I had to show
Doctor said: "I'm sorry, mate,
'Fraid we'll have to amputate."
The Eagles - bang on. Made the mistake of paying a lot of money to see them a few years ago. Two and a half hours of them standing like statues trotting out one long drone. A proper snore fest. The most boring band in the world.
Just imagine their tribute band Talon!
So, the lip syncing wasn’t also good then?
Entertaining video, some of your observations and comparisons are very funny. Bit confusing though when you are listing bands you hate, but several of them released one or more records that you really enjoyed.

Cranberries....Associates....Def Leppard...on THIS list....unbelievable...Mr Classic Review i will still subscribe but had to register my incredulity❤
Love the entire Cranberries discography, but to be fair, Def Leppard has some truly CRAPPY albums post-Hysteria!
Agree
I’m with you on this batch… I could go on and on about how and why I hate every single one of those bands. You nailed it. 👍
I disagree with Van Halen and Motley Crue. I saw VH with DLR and SH and they were awesome live. Hysteria from Def Lepard is a great album.
Saw them back in the day , they were really good. Worked a Van Hager show in the 80s , then Diamond Dave came through. He was pretty good too.
I used to put in on the jukebox at my local - everyone hated it! Philistines
Clearly this song divides opinion. I hated it but most people I know liked it.
@@mcwulf25 That's one of the things I liked about it. It seemed deliberately designed to alienate mainstream listeners, perfectly combining a melodic pop sensibility with a punk ethos while confusing the hell out of everyone.
@@IamQuizPug One off pretentiousness, it couldn't last, the follow up Club Country was another classic but no 30 year career of tedium for the dullard masses, irritated by anything that deviates from expected vocal frequencies and rhythms. Beautiful!
Mojo Nixon summed up the Eagles perfectly for me in his song "Don Henley must die" . I cannot stand them.
The late, great Mojo Nixon!
@@chuckm4540 Elvis is Everywhere! 😃
I think Jeff Lebowski had the best take on The Eagles.
@@matthewwoelfle5533I also like what Denis Leary said on a promo he did on MTV in the early 90s (which seem like an eternity ago), "I got three words for Don Henley, Joe F'n Walsh!"
There's a legend (donno if it's true) that Mojo and Don once shared a stage later in Mojo's life. And that they had a grand old time.
I do agree with all your choices with the exception of The Associates. However I do understand your aversion to Billy's voice.
Imagine Dragons, Creed, Disturbed, Metallica (yea I said it), Damn - there are way too many INCLUDING Foo Fighters, U2, Coldplay, Phish, 'maybe' Green Day,
Nothing wrong with hating Metallica but their 1st 4 albums were world changing, after that, meh.
Cosidering later output of Metallica I can't blame anyone xD
I hate Green Day.

Matt belamy from muse sounds like mr burns, there's no difference whatsoever.. it's uncanny . He also takes a short breath between every vocal line.
So he sounds like mr burns constantly catching his breath
'Excellent!'
Regarding Van Halen. I would be very interested in your take on the "Van Hagar" albums.
Once I heard Gram Parsons, The Burritos etc I never had to listen to the Eagles again. Their two best songs for me are Bitter Creek and My Man (about Gram) and pretty much all Bernie both songs!
Why Don't You Get a Job by the Offspring is the worst song in all of human history. Makes We Built this City sound like Stairway to Heaven.
Hah - the Eagles - indeed. They really, really lost me when, sometime in the 2000s, they signed an exclusive marketing deal with Walmart. The very ultimate in sell-out. Gag.
You, me, and Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski happily hating on the Schmeagles.
My brother-in-law called them The Smeagols!
@@barbarakirk3064 hahahah - yeah!
Ironic because The Big Lebowski is hugely overrated.

It's all about opinions they say. I don't think it's necessarily negative to give honest opinions about the acts you don't love, if (as you do) you explain your reasons.
Surely the fact this band is unique and not for everyone is what makes them special.

I did enjoy their cover of Down in the park though.
yep a few days ago they were on a rerun sat.night live put on mute good guys and all but never liked the music
I've watched 3 of these vids regarding the bands not overly liked, and I think you are spot on. Above all you are entirely fair in your assesssments.
These videos are a b it tongue in cheek tbh.
"the reason the critics hate us and love Evis Costello is because they look like Elvis Costello!"DLR. in your case you'd give Costello a run for his money in the ugly department😅😂
thanks for turning me on to the Jerry Lee Lewis live album from 1964. I never would have discovered it if it wasn't for you.
Eagles “Betrayal of the 60s ethos “ - as in “Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac “
The 60’s ethos were invented by a government office. Read “weird scenes in the canyon” and it will all make sense
For me, Van Halen's first 2 albums were strong, but after that, they lost me.

Check out early Def Leppard. They didn’t have that hair metal glam in the beginning.
The first and second albums by Def Leppard are great because they are much more in line with the NWOBHM than glam/pop.
There is a hell of a lot of great music across all of their albums, certainly a lot more than many of their contemporaries.
What is NWOBHM ?
@@DissTopia-o7p ‘The New Wave of British Heavy Metal’.
They changed their sound to appeal to US radio. Their contemporaries, Iron Maiden, concentrated on quality.
Retro active was a darker amazing album from them that didn’t get enough love compared to hysteria or adrenalize IMO
The late great Mojo Nixon summed up the Eagles best with his song "Don Henley Must Die".
How old is Barry Robinson? I can’t quite work it out, sometimes it sounds as if he was already old enough to know what’s what in the early 70s during the growth of program rock, next he seems to be talking about still being at school at the start of the 80s; bit of an enigma, really!
Aaaargh! Prog rock, not program rock, curse you, autocorrect!
"Number ten is Muse." I stood to applaud. That is a fantastic start.
Can you do a critique of the 00s post-Britpop music scene in the UK? There’s so many bands and artists I despise from that time I’d love to hear your opinions on them.
10/10 for me there, Barry. But why hold on to those crap cd’s from bands who don’t grab you any more: the charity shop bin awaits your visit.
Never even heard of them
And I am aware of hundreds of obscure bands..

I don't agree on your views on the Associates but I do watch a lot of your videos and will continue to do so. That's life, tastes varies.
Difficult one Muse, they were certainly a breath of fresh air when they started and are bloody good live.

Mid 80s had Dio, Sabbath, Dokken, Ratt. They were all great.
Don’t forget Judias priest and queensryche. 2 amazing live bands.

Motley Crue is 3-day-old bong water translated to sound.
He likes what he likes, just like everyone else does
It's tempting to make a list of bands/performers I don’t like as much as the consensus. Like Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynnrd and Van Morrison. There was a noughties band I detested called Scouting for Girls too.
I can't agree with you on the Cranberries but no disagreement on any of the others.
Great band. All the '90s albums are good, not just the first one. She was one of the best and most original singer -songwriter ever.
Same here.
“Dreams” is a really beautiful song. One of the best of the 90’s imo.
Agree with all but The Associates and Happy Mondays. Each to their own, eh?
Pretty much. If everyone was down with the same sound it would be as boring as hell by now
Wow, quite an eclectic mix, but then as I've said before, your wide and knowledgeable grasp of historical music has always impressed me.
Dolores was half Canadian goose
I think I enjoy your wordplay more than the actual artists reviewed. "Ball sack of musical mediocracy". F-ing brilliant!
I love your list videos. I always try to find disagreement with them, but I haven't yet!
