  • This Area of New Zealand has a rich history of early Maori Occupation and heritage sites are part of the fascinating landscape. Even the road to Cape Palliser is dramatically scenic.
To get to this campsite you will require a 4wd which makes this site very less crowded and sometimes whole place to yourself with amazing waterfall and swimming spot.
If you don't have a 4wd then there are few camping spots in the way and in Ngawihi which is a fishing village before you drive on to the lighthouse.
Be ready to test your fitness and climb 250 steps to reach the top of the lighthouse which was installed in 1897. Its easy to see why this area of ocean was known for seafaring disasters. During the 19th century, there were about 20 ships wrecked in or near Palliser Bay.

Awesome video. But didnt that sign say no camping allowed? or was the camp on the other side?

So in the start two gated properties are private land. Can’t camp on those and have to stick with tracks.

Hey, if you watch another video of ours you will see the entrance just after the lighthouse. You just have to keep the gates shut and can’t camp within those gates as those are private lands

As long as everything is in good condition and no rubbish, I don't see anyone giving you trouble 😊 We picked up some rubbish and you can't tell we were there.
