At 7:00 he says something that I have felt for years! I quit heroin the day I finally put in the rearview and said “I dont do heroin anymore” and stopped counting the days until my next relapse. I still have to look it up when asked how long Ive been sober because I dont remember the exact date. I always hated 12 step programs that have you counting the days and constantly THINKING like an addict.
I literally talked about this same concept of “changing your identity” but I always said “reinvent myself” and felt like counting days was counterproductive and always looking back on something you tell yourself you can’t do anymore…. I always say I’m choosing to do something or worst case just choosing not to do whatever bad habit it is at the moment and have a general idea of when I “quit” but don’t keep track of it….. it just feels a lot better than what a lot of recovery programs or AA teach.. also hate how they make you say “I’m an addict” like how can you reinvent yourself if you classify yourself like that… they didn’t like me in recovery groups but I never went back to it like I did when I was down bad in addiction… may have had a few relapses here or there but never went back full into it.
I definitely have a problem where when I start doing good and I'm on a roll, by brain goes "we're not used to this let's go back' like that thermostat metaphor.
When people ask how long I've been clean and sober I say 2-3yrs.. cause I didn't count.. But a few days ago I got a FB memory of my dog's sudden death, which triggered my sobering up.. I realized it was 5yrs ago (vs 30yrs of chaos). I'm proud of myself.
I’m a retire PRO alcoholic. I was in denial and felt cool when I was wasted. Even earned myself a DUI- I was so pro. Now- 10 years without it- feels much happier. One day at a time amigo.
Very interesting talk Theo. Been where you been and been where you are. Found life most difficult when someone rejected me. I wanted to die. It’s as if all the hate was true. Only anger could move me out of it. I just wanted love but couldn’t find any. Didn’t know how. I didn’t want drugs or alcohol or anything else, I wanted to be better. I think Tony’s talking about self-love and ways to get there. If you can learn to understand why you act and feel the way you do, you can learn to act and feel different. That’s why a lot of us take the path of becoming a therapist. ‘The wounded healer.’ My breakthrough came when I hit rock bottom trying to get through this by myself, loving myself. I sat on my couch all alone chocking on my overwhelming pain. I couldn’t breath and called out to the Lord Jesus to help me. I surrendered. I know now It is the first step in AA. Jesus appeared to my spiritual eyes as we were in a different place. He reached out his hand and I took it. He kneeled down in front of me and so I kneeled down facing Him, still holding hands. Looking into His eyes, I began to feel overwhelming emotional pain but it wasn’t mine, it was His. We cried a long time feeling each others pain. Since that time I’ve listened for His directions and His love now overwhelms me. No more anger, only love and understanding. My greatest weakness has become my greatest strength. This little light of mine I’m letting it shine brother. You might not be open to this path but it would be interesting to listen to guests, on your show, who can talk about it. Always enjoy you Theo and I really do love and accept you, warts and all.
I remember in the 80's and early 90's all these guys, and the "achieve your goals" culture and peddlers of advice sort of combined with the "greed is good" times, suspenders, bmw's....lots of external signals of "success" at that time. 90 percent of them were grifters, and all imperfect like the rest of us, but 35 years on, and Tony still going, kudos, he is the real deal it seems.
Imagine the horror of realising not only that 'this is all there is', but also that all you thought it was actually wasn't. Self-delusion is the only antidote to reality.
Actually having the things you previously wanted can only make you happy for so long before you get bored and want something else. Not having them in reach is bad, so the ideal case is where those things are in reach but you don't quite have them yet. Basically a carrot on a stick.

A study revealed that many convicted felons have very high self esteem and confidence, that is often why they leave prison and commit the same crimes. They genuinely think they won't get caught.
I love what Tony said here but I think he left out the reality that we all have limitations. We are fallible, flawed beings. The reality is I cannot "reprogram" that out of the equation. At some point I have to look beyond myself to overcome life's challenges.
Happiness is what is when there are no conditions for it. Tony’s condition is growth. I 100% disagree with his statement that “the path of least resistance won’t make you happy.” Happiness is what is when there is no resistance. Resistance is a pushing against what is. Another word for this is suffering. Think of EVERY time you were miserable and I guarantee that there was resistance to what was showing up in the moment. To the degree that we resist what is happening, we are focusing on it and thereby creating more of the same problem just with our resistance. Conversely, to the degree that we are loving and accepting of what is showing up, we are happy. The ‘self’ which Tony is referring to is a concept/thought. Some folks refer to this as ego. I am not a Buddhist but I heard a story of the Dalai Lama’s hearing about low self esteem and being confused. The ’self’ which can have high or low esteem only exists within thought. Without a thought, can you find the self which can high or low self esteem? Can you find an ego? There is a knowing of being but there is no need for a separate entity in order to be. In reality, there is only the one life essence or intelligence energy which patterns, shapes, and forms into absolutely everything. And then the mind takes ownership of it. Take a look at a corpse. Can it do anything without the animating life essence / intelligence energy? There is no separate entity or doer. It is this belief in separation which makes everyone miserable. “What’s wrong with right now unless you think about it?” - Sailor Bob Adamson

I am of the opinion that it is not our right or prerogative to suggest that another person, whose body and mind we don’t live in, should not be on SSRI’S. You can think that, but please don’t say it out loud or write your opinion on this on public forums. You are simply not aware of how not aware you are.
Most can be prevented by chemical imbalance physically. The mental part is breaking a routine of either interactions or rewiring the self put downs in your head. Like wanting to hear a new song but don't know what to choose. Specially if playing in front of other people. They may not like it
Yes, but you can't just explain away everything in life with the non-duality clause. Things are still going to hurt or help while we're in this state/context (because we are actually the organism and the environment).
what most people dont understand is that happiness is NOT a destination. Happiness is a fleeting event you get to experience from time to time. Much like a pleasant fragrance or smell you may experience as you walk in a park etc. Its momentary, fleeting and very pleasant BUT it isnt something you can capture. Its just something that you were lucky enough and open enough to experience. Experience life, dont try to continually steer and control it. Tony is right about a lot but is a little off in others. Growth isnt what people need, creation is. People need to create, people need to belong, people need to be a part of something. We are small tribal creatures and the problem is that currently, we are all living wrong. Large, isolating nation-states where we are just a cog or number chasing some fake medium of exchange in order to buy materialistic junk doesnt allow for happiness to find us. Society is all wrong, and deep down we all know it.
Best way to change your identity is to hold off on your current one. Example:I want a cigarette But I have to finish doing everything in the day before I have one so I can enjoy my cigarette. You go long enough everyday without that cigarette til the end of the day. You’ll notice the cigarette isn’t all that and a bag of chips.
I feel this. I want to be sober and healthy again

Thankyou and appreciate the authentic share from both of you 🙏
Not everyone is concerned about happiness, they just want to get through life comfortably.
Wow that growing and dying analogy is so good! I love Tony!!! This is a blessing❤
Thanks for uploading these shorter videos as I then saw the full episode and listened to the whole thing.Highly valuable. Thankyou!!
instead of pursuing happiness ... pursue reasons to be happy and the happiness will take care of itself
If you're going through hell, keep going! Shouts out to everyone struggling but never giving up.
❤✝ *Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction* - Matthew 7:13-14
Chapter 3 of Atomic Habits. That’s that Tony read and understood. That book is a prerequisite for life
Path of least resistance is something different than not taking up challenges Tony.
I hated every word in this video, but desperately needed to hear it. Thank you 🙏🏻
Great to see Mr. Robbins being able to help this era.
Theo this a beautiful episode. I really feel myself in your shoes and Tony has been a role model for years. EXCELLENT stuff. Appreciate you bud.
Great episode, thank you both.
I adore Tony Robbins! He is amazing!
I literally talked about this same concept of “changing your identity” but I always said “reinvent myself” and felt like counting days was counterproductive and always looking back on something you tell yourself you can’t do anymore…. I always say I’m choosing to do something or worst case just choosing not to do whatever bad habit it is at the moment and have a general idea of when I “quit” but don’t keep track of it….. it just feels a lot better than what a lot of recovery programs or AA teach.. also hate how they make you say “I’m an addict” like how can you reinvent yourself if you classify yourself like that… they didn’t like me in recovery groups but I never went back to it like I did when I was down bad in addiction… may have had a few relapses here or there but never went back full into it.
at 45. I wish I had better job choices in the past. i’m stuck where i’m at. this guy tony is amazing real life talking. he has some deep wisdom
Smooth seas never made a skilled sailor!
Damn I need to listen to the full pod, this really resonates with what I’m going thru
I definitely have a problem where when I start doing good and I'm on a roll, by brain goes "we're not used to this let's go back' like that thermostat metaphor.
me too... & yet you'll find a way 😊
When people ask how long I've been clean and sober I say 2-3yrs.. cause I didn't count..
But a few days ago I got a FB memory of my dog's sudden death, which triggered my sobering up.. I realized it was
5yrs ago (vs 30yrs of chaos).
I'm proud of myself.
Day 1 for me tonm, I'm ready for a change watching this video amd seeing the comments like yours have motivated me to start NOW.
I needed to hear this. Thanks bros.
This is gold!
Thanks Theo!
Wow, Tony is truly amazing! 🎉
Decided to stop a 14 year weed habit. This video came into my feed at just the right time
Wonderful reminder ✍🏾
I remember in the 80's and early 90's all these guys, and the "achieve your goals" culture and peddlers of advice sort of combined with the "greed is good" times, suspenders, bmw's....lots of external signals of "success" at that time. 90 percent of them were grifters, and all imperfect like the rest of us, but 35 years on, and Tony still going, kudos, he is the real deal it seems.
This is so good man!!! Great conversation keep up the great work.
The wisdom of this man
Imagine the horror of realising not only that 'this is all there is', but also that all you thought it was actually wasn't. Self-delusion is the only antidote to reality.
There are some real nuggets here !!
Cheers
Touched on so much. Thanks
this guy is cool af loved watching this clip.
Love your alfalfa sprout Theo
I appreciate Theo Von
Man, this is good stuff.
getting things you want can make you happy. it’s not having them in reach is depressing.
Actually having the things you previously wanted can only make you happy for so long before you get bored and want something else. Not having them in reach is bad, so the ideal case is where those things are in reach but you don't quite have them yet. Basically a carrot on a stick.
@@imageword5576 I wish I had the job skills to have better things. i’m happy but could have things. but it is what it is. I think having adhd my whole life doesn’t help for jobs and a good career. i’m good but friends do better
Ronnie ain’t growing out of that 😂
Super Dave Osborne is very inspirational.
Loved this video. Cool seeing AR on this platform. A bit of a different side of him.
The DUO I never knew I needed! 🫶🏻 Absolutely love the talks between you two. ❤️
Sounds like a motivating Jeff from Curb your Enthusiasm.
that's was awesome, needed to hear that .
I used to take shortcuts in life when I was actually at my happiest point in life...then I lost everything just because I avoided responsibility as much as I could thinking it would make my life easier only to wake up one day not knowing I became a totally different person I could not recognize myself I lost my happiness and the scariest part I lost myself
It's funny to me, Because when I was a young child I remember hearing about tony robins,
And any time I asked my dad about him, My dad would get very angry,
So now as an adult, Being really exposed to Tony Robbins from this podcast, Makes me realize a couple of things,
Firstly that this man is spitting, And that of motivational speakers he's probably actually the best,
And secondly, My dad almost certainly got kicked out of a Tony Robbins seminar 🤷🤣
A study revealed that many convicted felons have very high self esteem and confidence, that is often why they leave prison and commit the same crimes. They genuinely think they won't get caught.
Thanks for sharing

Easy path doesn't make u happy..but the long way never ends 🤯
Resolution to annul my narcissistic relationship with myself.
I love what Tony said here but I think he left out the reality that we all have limitations. We are fallible, flawed beings. The reality is I cannot "reprogram" that out of the equation. At some point I have to look beyond myself to overcome life's challenges.
The spiritual part of being a human, is also another form of accomplishment and a path to feeling happy if you have physical limitations.
It's probably just the hair, but Theo looks like a Georgie from young Sheldon grown up
Happiness is what is when there are no conditions for it.

I just wanna get good sleep. I'm taking a lot of small steps in the right direction. Just started my second job. I've been drinking a ton more water every day. I'm gonna put in as much effort as I can every day. 😌 Thanks!
I am of the opinion that it is not our right or prerogative to suggest that another person, whose body and mind we don’t live in, should not be on SSRI’S. You can think that, but please don’t say it out loud or write your opinion on this on public forums. You are simply not aware of how not aware you are.
If I can get off of those and stop being so "depressed" anyone can. Reality is a mindset.
Wow I can relate ! This is good*!!!!❤😊
how do you stop the self sabotage?
Most can be prevented by chemical imbalance physically. The mental part is breaking a routine of either interactions or rewiring the self put downs in your head. Like wanting to hear a new song but don't know what to choose. Specially if playing in front of other people. They may not like it
Or you will lose everything no matter what you do every conceivable separation will occur, everything no matter how good or bad will pass. ❤
Yes, but you can't just explain away everything in life with the non-duality clause. Things are still going to hurt or help while we're in this state/context (because we are actually the organism and the environment).
Tony Robbins is born the 29th, and his 11 life path…
Great great clip
what most people dont understand is that happiness is NOT a destination.
Ok, im taking notes
My guy…so good
Yeah but being forced through the opposite will just make you not give a shit too.
Reminds me of my new mantra (Think I took it from Luke Cage?). Always forward.
Yes it will.
Best way to change your identity is to hold off on your current one.
Example:I want a cigarette
But I have to finish doing everything in the day before I have one so I can enjoy my cigarette.
You go long enough everyday without that cigarette til the end of the day. You’ll notice the cigarette isn’t all that and a bag of chips.
Theo is coming to Auckland in 4 weeks, yea let’s go, gonna wear my mullet wig
He'll grow out of it. Dude he's 34 😂
Tony sounds like a retired wrestler
To be fair I love the easy way 99% of the time.
Hell yeah
