    I will never understand why anybody would ever care if the car has a soft of hard touch dashboard.....huh?....its not like I am going to lay down on it and hurt my back..... also soft touch plastic cracks much easier after years of sun exposer then hard plastic....for that reason alone I would prefer hard plastic over soft touch...

      647killa I've driven the VW golf in the sequential manual and compared it to it's automatic mode. The automatic is the winner. I get the feeling you just prefer manual -- in all cars.

    • @BowmanOverland
      @BowmanOverland 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Cheung Are you talking about flappy paddles or an actual manual?

    • @647killa
      @647killa 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Matthew Cheung I do, and whilst my buddy's DSG GTI shifts fast, after a few flicks I stuck the box into auto mode as I was bored as shyt. I couldn't care less for a fast shifting DSG in every day driving or even traffic. The novelty of the DSG wore off quick after a day of driving and It took me away from an otherwise fun car the GTI. Drove the car with a 6 speed manual and it was so easy to drive, clutch pedal was so soft to modulate that you have to be either handicapped or a lazy ass to consider it a chore. The manual box is so smooth and tight (it was a brand new car) and I really felt good about driving the GTI and almost wished I had one, unlike the DSG GTI experience of mine. I don't prefer manual boxes in all cars, like a Toyota Echo or a Camry, though a manual box will bring the most of out of any engine and make for a boring car like the Echo a bit more fun to drive. Again, I'm sorry to say, but the novelty of a the DSG wore off quickly and I drove many cars with a dual clutch and felt the same way. The GTI is a crap shoot compared to the EVO X I drove, but it too got really boring after a couple of hard launches and canyon runs with the SST dual clutch tranny. Wished I had a 5MT there too, instead of the 6 speed SST. Just my humble opinion and experiences.

      Gary Shepard I guess it depends on the car. And whether you touch it or not, it’s nice to have soft touch materials rather then hard. good and pretty much accurate review. i have 2012 gli autobahn. since positives have been noted i'll highlight some negatives for those who are considering it: very loud road noise, very hard uncomfortable plastic on the sides where you show it, brakes are not that strong; don't inspire confidence. have done just shy of 20k miles averaging 23.5 miles per gallon. main positives: sporty but compliant ride, large trunk space, good backseat legroom. excellent engine indeed with good torque starting at low rpm. reliability has been good, however all materials are not equally strong. at 2k liner over where right back tire is came off which was covered under warranty. at 17.5 k miles the lever that adjusts driver seat came off. vw in 2012 unlike 2 years now gave 3 years free maintenance that was also a plus being this was my first car in US.

  • @nelsonvanvickle8862
    @nelsonvanvickle8862 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    "It'll hit 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds"..
    That's with the manual. The DSG equipped model will shave about 4/10ths of a second off that time, and with a proper set of summer tires and launch control you can do it in just under six. That's bone stock. That's better than a bone stock Si, and just about the same as a bone stock mk7 manually equipped GTI...

    • @EverythingUndone
      @EverythingUndone 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really don't understand you saying you've beaten Civic Si's/BRZ's with ease, because the cars are really similar in times wise. Both are around the 6s mark for 0-60 and well lets just say the quarter mile times are roughly the same. So personal I just think your just a Bullshiter. Good day

    • @velt1870
      @velt1870 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      For your info I have beaten them period and next time I'll post it for your dumb ass to see it. Similar times don't mean shit! It's just similar! On a track rather its autocross or drag it's on the driver and while you like them trying to shift fast hoping not to miss a gear I'll keep riding out with my DSG transmission all the way to the finish line

      ToastToTheSheeps Skrt I don't think this car stands a chance against a WRX, stock for stock. None of the cars mentioned in this thread could. Tuned, this car could probably win, because, assuming APRs numbers are accurate, their OTS tunes can give you more power than a Full Bolt on WRX.

    • @MrAviator81
      @MrAviator81 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ToastToTheSheeps Skrt The wrx is an awd car, and has way more hp. The GLI is a fwd, and 210hp so...of course the wrx is gonna win in a race. Ya fucking mook! They are not even in the same class! If that's your logic why not put a WRX against a Lambo Huracan?

      His bitching was so accurate, wasn't it? Despite having a bad VW experience in the past, I went to look at the TDI Jetta Sportwagen and the TDI Passat when we were looking for a new car. I admire the German engineering at a "budget" price (which really isn't a budget price anymore), but yeah -- I was struck with the complete lack of features on the car at the price they wanted, particularly the Sportwagen. I'm probably not quite as hung up on needing all the latest bells and whistles as your typical American, but the VW becomes a really hard sell, especially for a car where you're not the only driver. And what's with the screen getting SMALLER if you get a NAV. Seriously?
      At the end of the day, am I going to spend MORE for this car with fewer features than a similarly-priced Subaru or Honda? I think I'll skip the German engineering and fun driving this time, along with the good chance that I'll get a "bad" one. I'm 45. I'd love to have a "Driver's Wanted" car, but I'll sacrifice a little road feel these days for a larger NAV screen, some HID lights that help these old eyes see better in the dark, and a backup camera. These are things I have to live with every day, 100% of the time. The days I get to take a fun drive on the twisties? Not quite as often these days, sorry to say.
      Now, if they bring that 6-speed TDI Passat Wagon over here that I saw at the NY auto show? I think that's the next time I step foot in a VW showroom.

    Well done review! You pack a lot of useful info into a small space. I stumbled upon this looking for what is included in the Autobahn Package, and you gave me a whole lot more. I now better understand what I'm looking at as I shop for a nice used 2014 GLI. Very disappointing that you need to get the NAV (which I DON"T want) to get the Day Time Running Lights, backup camera, and the Smart Key. For goodness sake, the 2015 Jetta SE has Smart Key! Thanks Sofyan for bringing it all together. This is the kind of hard hitting info I need to make a good choice. I tip my hat your way.

    I've leased both the 2010 GTI with DSG and Autobahn and now I am 18 months into a 2013 GLI Autobahn with NAV and DSG. Generally agree with almost all things said about the vehicle. Laymen generally prefer the look of the GLI and generally I get more compliments / interest from non-enthusiasts then I got with the GTI. I agree that the GLI has a bit of an edge removed from the GTI in that the steering is a little lighter, and performance slightly off. That being said compared to the 2010 GTI this is the better road trip car and the longer wheel base helps smooth out rough roads. Although, I felt the GTI had a slightly more upright seating position that I liked better. Honestly though, I still have a lot of fun in the GLI and passengers love the backseat. When the lease is up on this one, at the moment I think I may go back to the next generation GTI for the (small) extra edge and the fact that it's all new, but I'll see what the GLI looks like at that point and what the lease looks like (GLIs generally fall under Jetta incentives).

    Great review. I've been leasing the exact model from the video for the past 32 months and have to say your pros and cons are exactly what I've identified. My biggest personal gripe is the lighting. I don't have the best vision, and at night it is not easy to drive with the standard halogen bulbs. I really wish the upgraded lighting was a standalone option, rather than a $3k packaged deal with the navigation, which is overpriced and underwhelming in its own right.

    i love this car. it was WAY faster than camry and waaaaaaaaay more comfortable than any toyota car i rented. it is really strong car and the response is amazing beside VW lives forever and very very practical cars. it is well known. honestly, the EPA rating for this car is below what it makes. camry and honda drinks more gas. the only car i found good compared to this car is only the altima. srsly guys, those two cars are way more COMFORTABLE than any toyota cars. i drove camry 2014 and ohhh it was painful and the plastic their is beyond terrible the worst of the worst! i rented a corolla and I SWEAR to god i could not stand the pain in my back for one day. i return it back and i got a way more comfortable elantra hyundai car. it was a 500% better than camry and corolla together. i hate to drive any toyota now cus of comfort zone that i lost when i drive them especially the pain in my back when i ride the car and i must say if they don't fix this problem in Toyota they will find themselves a part from the competition... it is a matter of time only! thx

    LOL I still laugh at the "knocks" on the dashboard. I have had both and visually you cannot tell. I guess I don't drive around tapping on my dash board. But I also say, if you want premium, then buy an Audi. It's a VW :) Great review by the way!

    +Redline Reviews Great review. I've recently moved to the suburbs and I'm looking at the 2016 GLI as a possible daily driver/fun on weekends hauler. Do you have any plans to go s review of the 2016 model? Also, is the 1.8L Sport model a worthy (and yes, cheaper ) alternative to get a similar driving feel? Appreciate your help and advice.

    Sofyan, loved the review. Is this model still available for the 2015/16 year, and did you review it? Could someone buy and learn to drive stick in this car ? Would love your thoughts.

    The interiors look like the newer GTI's which is an awesome car in fact the engine plan should be the same as the turbocharger.

    I've always loved the sound of I5 engines because they sound like V10's (because a V10 is pretty much two I5's sharing a crankshaft).

    I drove a 2011 Jetta 2.5 SE today at work. Honestly it would be a perfectly fine car if it didn't absolutely CRASH over bumps because of the lack of a independent rear suspension.

    I'm a little confused when you keep talking about the sound the engine makes? and the fact that it sounds different than in the GTI, Isn't the sound that you're hearing the "fake " engine noise coming from the speakers ??

    I think you forget that the GLI is a family sedan, so it won't be as crisp and tight as say the GTI. Anyways it was a great video as usual, keep up the great work and lets see a video on the 2015 EcoBoost Mustang.

  • @spruceguitar

    You're very articulate during your reviews and this is great. But here's the thing: why do you film your face while you drive? We want to have the view you have while you drive - a camera up on top behind you that can show us the steering wheel and a bit of the road while the car is in motion. Otherwise you might as well sit at a desk and talk about it - if we have to see your face while you talk about it. Most common mistake car reviewers make. We are not interested in face grimaces and we can already hear what you say. We would just like to see the road and your view while you drive - not the reviewer's face.

    Hey, you said that vw always under rate their cars, I had read that they detuned their cars so that they don't compete with audi, do you know if that is true?

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      not true. Their numbers are de-tuned from Europe because of the fuel differences(North America has crappy fuel). In the USA this 2.0t with 210 actually makes 227hp to the wheels. At the crank, add 25% more to that. So yes, power and fuel efficiency is under rated in North America, over-rated in Europe.

      I saved my money. haha. Let me tell you, test driving stuff in that price range (Audi A4, Acura TSX, BMW 328i) pulling up in a Suzuki, NO ONE takes you seriously. Mercedes didn't let me into a "new" GLK. Only allowed me to test drive a used one, which felt like a rattly garbage can.

    Besides the redefined engine 210HP there's a big leap on the torque also which is 258lb ft on 1500rpm , than the previous TSI engine which has 200hp 207lb ft torque on 1700 rpm. That alone is a thumbs up for me, and for other people there longing for VW to give there models some what a little more kick to their 2.0T engines.
