    Nipple sensation has always been hugely important and erotic for me. I’m trying to come to terms with the fact I’ll likely lose it when I finally get to have it. It feels like mourning, but I know I need top surgery. It’s unfair that we must make so many sacrifices to have the bodies we should always have had. I just hope I’m lucky like you were. I’m glad to hear of someone that even maintained erotic sensation, it gives me a touch of hope

      Bless you my friend, I completely understand and relate to the experience of mourning, there is so much of that with our journey, it has been especially poignant with my lower surgery journey. Transition really is a process of loss and gain and finding that tricky balance. Im glad to give you hope for surgery!

    Hi Finn I’ve had top surgery and have 98 percent sensation on the whole chest . I’m a little bit numb under my arm pits which is weird but nerves are still healing three years on . We have had same surgeon . Scars still healing . I’m extremely happy with having my chest and am great full every second for it now

      Hi my friend! Oh so not just me then! I wonder why we end up with sensation? I mean I guess some nerves will regrow, but for it to be erotic too, that was a surprise! And I hear you on the gratitude....every day I could cry with happiness at the freedom this chest gives!

    I did a lot of trawling trans subreddits and talking to other trans men about their experiences, and one of the things that came up is post-DI nip sensation - iirc (I didn't take numbers) in most cases where it exists, people end up with a 'phantom nip' patch near the incision scar. Essentially, the nip nerves are reeeeeeeaaaaaaaching for where they used to be, and when they hit the scar they decide that's 'good enough' and make the sensors there! There were also people who not only got sensation back, but got it in the right place, so you're not the only one.
    I ended up getting peri about five months ago, and while I temporarily lost all sensation, I've gradually regained some types... including erotic, which I *definitely* did not have in the first place. Super weird.

    • @FinnTheInfinncible
      @FinnTheInfinncible  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Bodies are amazing arent they?! Thats really interesting about the reaching part, perhaps thats the same with lower surgery, which is what then causes the displaced feeling? There is such a need for collating research isnt there? Perhaps one day I will go ahead with my PHD and do just that! So glat to hear you have sensation back!

    • @aroidaaric
      @aroidaaric 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh that's fascinating! I've seen people get only the nipple bud grafted (and the areola tattooed on after). I wonder if in those cases, the nerve regrowth is more "accurate" since they'd reach for the incisions around the nipple bud instead of further out

  • @fevre_dream8542
    @fevre_dream8542 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Second comment - regarding the awesome thing that is nerve regeneration (feat. my nerdy science brain and some workplace medical knowledge):
    Whereas the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) do not regenerate very well in mammals, the peripheral nervous system does readily. Once a nerve is cut, the end farthest from the spine (the end that gets "cut off") degenerates and is cleared away by immune cells. The end closest to the spine (the "stem" part, to use the analogy of a flower or branch) then starts to regrow and re-innervate the area. This is why sensation can sometimes be different when it returns, because the nerve regrows in a slightly different way.
    I had a facial nerve cut while getting my wisdom teeth out, and 2 years later suddenly noticed my lower lip wasn't numb anymore. A more extreme example, a doctor I work with had massive surgery for thyroid cancer and they cut a nerve in his neck. During one of our shifts he just started rubbing his ear in awe, it had been numb for 4 years and suddenly had sensation again. The 'sudden' return of sensation likely has to do with reconstruction of the myelin sheath and other structures that allow conduction from one neuron to another.
    The body is a truly strange and wonderful thing, and for those who are still waiting - nerve regeneration just takes some time. Severed nerves to not lose their ability to regenerate, even if they have been severed for a long time. Regrowth rate is on average 1mm per day, and there is a lot of ground to cover to innervate all the muscle and skin.

      @FinnTheInfinncible  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I love this info! Thank you so much! This is especially interesting for me in terms of my lower surgery. I am 5 years post op now, and wondered if my sensation regrowth is finished, but perhaps it isnt. Exciting! You rock! And so do our amazing bodies!

    I also have nipple sensation . I'll be 2 years post op in July. And my right nipple ( areola first) was feeling things about 3 weeks out. I'm like excuse me , sir. What are you doing?
    I feel both now (lefty caught up pretty fast) and only have that same small center patch of numbness ( even that's going away now) and a bit near my arm pits ( that could be from lipo?) So yeah...
    I also had a bilateral double mastectomy and I can feel most of my chest. I wasn't expecting that.

Who knows the sensation may come back. I like your last statement regarding other people’s attitudes after your top surgery. I'm a cis, bi, female who's never experienced dysphoria in my life...until I figured out that I'm balding at 26 a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it doesn't even compare to the level of dysphoria trans people feel, but it sucks (and I'm sorry). I had suspected it, but the wake-up call came when my hairdresser said she only sees this kind of hair loss in 70 year old women. I've been a bit of a wreck, and watching your videos has been helpfully calming. So thanks I guess lol. Keep on being awesome.

Im glad my videos have helped a bit and I am sending you so much love.

    I had the same experience with being told I wouldn't have sensation and my surgeon being wrong. I'm 3 weeks and 1 day post op and I could feel every single part of my chest except my nipples and incisions immediately after surgery. At my 1 week reveal my surgeon noted that if I developed a hematoma or fluid they'd just stick a needle in and drain it and not to worry because my chest is numb at this stage so it wouldn't hurt and I didn't know how to say that my chest sensation was completely unaltered from before. At 2 weeks post op sensation in my incisions came back, although it's still not as strong as the rest of my chest. Also she told me before my surgery that sensation elsewhere would come back, but I absolutely unequivocally would not have even tactile sensation in my nipples, but I've been having those little nerve regrowth zaps since day 1 and as of last week I've already started regaining sensation in my left nipple on the actual nub bit and it's increasing every day. Even on people who are told they'll regain nipple sensation, I've never heard of it this early. I'm certainly going to have a very interesting post op appointment in 2 weeks where I ask her whether I just have super human nerves and need to be carted off and recruited by X-Men, or what the hell happened.

But i have a hematoma on my left side too and it was more difficult) I'm excited to see how much sensation if any i get back on my chest.

    I aso had Yelland waaay back in the day! (Great results aside from one side being a bit bigger, seems like a little bit of breast tissue left over, and my scarring is somewhat on the extreme side)
    I think it's also important to specify what kind of sensation. The term "sensation" is quite vague, you know? 'Thus why we also say "erotic sensation."
    Results vary person to person, but I usually see the general advice is that top surgery usually results in a loss of erotic sensation but you typically, but not always, get the general skin sensation back.
    For me, nowhere feels "numb" exactly, I have normal surface skin sensation, but if I poke and prod around my chest some areas are definitely more dulled and less sensitive than others (specifically closer to/around my nipples.)
    If I close my eyes and touch my nipples, there's a faint sensation (and Lord knows I can feel pain in them), but not as sensitive as the skin around them, and there's no erotic sensation anymore. They do get erect though and react to touch and temperature.
    I personally don't mind the loss of erotic sensation because I now love having my chest touched, with that dysphoria gone and a different shape I find hands on my chest to be super intimate and lovely.

    • @FinnTheInfinncible
      @FinnTheInfinncible  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes!!! This is exactly what I was talking about recently with my lower surgery sensation, that actually, sensation isnt just about feeling, but also erotic, and also just plain pleasurable in the absence of gender dysphoria!
      This is the same with my chest, exactly as you describe as 'super intimate and lovely' in a way it never was before, BUT I do also have distinct and definate erotic sensation in both nipples...they have a direct line to my lower area....and it is definately not my imagination. I have no idea how this is possible!

    • @FelixFFern
      @FelixFFern 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FinnTheInfinncible I assume that during recovery your nerves basically just won the recovery lottery, allowing for keeping some of the old sensation!
      Definitely very neat, and I remember in the past some guys saying they'd had similar experiences, so there must be more out there.
      And yeah, even without the erotic sensation, surgery has turned my chest into a much better area, so when I meet guys that aren't afraid to go near my scars (had one guy terrified he would accidentally hurt me, bless him) it's so nice.

    I was one of those who had a reduction before my full top surgery. I had extreme sensation after my reduction, but my surgeon told me that the reduction would affect my final top surgery as he had to cut the nerves to my nipples to put them in a different place. I can honestly say that after having no sensation to hypersensitivity, the lack of sensation was very welcome. I now wish I could have had some sort of "middle of the road" sensation after all was said and done. That's my experience. Always ask your surgeon of course, there are many options they may have to preserve sensation depending on how they do the surgery and how much tissue will be removed.

    I'm only just regaining sensation after three years. I can't say it's erotic... I don't think I've ever had erotic sensation in then. I've also never felt sick from them being touched, but I've always had a weird uneasy feeling touching them, and I'm pretty sure it's still the same... Of course I've had such a long numb period it's hard to tell. I guess what I mean to say is I'm not happier with the feeling in my chest... If anything the numbness makes it worse, but I feel so much better about it visually I don't care
