Volvo S80 Transmission Fluid Drain & Fill

  • This procedure will show you how to perform a simple ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) "drain and fill" from the transmission's oil pan. The service will result in less than half the ATF being drained from the transmission. The replacement fluid will be diluted into the existing fluid remaining in the ATF lines and torque converter. I prefer doing this with older cars where the fluid has turned black and the car has no history of a fluid change service (Volvo claims their ATF is a "fill for life" fluid). I like to give the new fluid's diluted detergents the chance to gradually remove any varnish build up on the transmission's clutch plates. After a few months have passed, I'll revisit the transmission and perform either another drain-and-fill or a complete fluid exchange/flush.
Since the ATF dip stick tube may be difficult to reach with a standard fluid funnel, I pumped the new ATF in with a 12v portable electric oil pump machine.
My ATF fluid of choice is Valvoline's synthetic ATF and usually sells for $18 a gallon at Walmart. The back of the container will tell you what vehicles their oil is compatible with. Since the oil is a full synthetic and is replacing either a semi synthetic or mineral based oil, the Valvoline oil will generally out perform the car manufacturer's ATF.

Like your video, you just save me a lot of money, for those non- Volvo owners: on most Volvo/Aisin drivetrain units the only way to replace the fluid filter is by take it down and a part, because the filter is in the middle of the drums. So... yeap for us that owns a Volvo P-2 this is Money Saving!!

I knew this one Volvo owner (C70) that had transmission shifting problems. Volvo said the fluid is a fill-for-life and to replace the transmission. She then went to a foreign car specialist and ... again, fill-for-life and wouldn't touch it. She came to me and told her I'd do a drain-and-fill and a flush. Shifting problems disappeared. To do a flush I detached the ATF return line to the transmission and ran the line into a container. I then started the car. When around 3 quarts pumped out, I'd stop the car, add the ATF via the dip stick tube and repeat the process until the fluid came out somewhat red. Here's a video on how I did it on a Toyota: th-cam.com/video/YoVdHNPGH54/w-d-xo.html

Thank you for showing a clear picture of the ATF fluid dipstick. Just had a drain and fill done on my 06 XC90 2.5T and wasn't sure where the fluid should be registering.
Since the S80 you are working on here and the XC90 are similar, would your description of where the fluid is registering still hold true for an XC90, I would think so but am not sure.
Thank you for your help and time! Also this video is clear and to the point, thank you!!

If you're unsure on the fluid level, measure what drained out and pour in the exact amount as measured then take a reading. You probably won't be off by more than 1/4 quart.

@@hardlymovingpro Thank you for responding so quickly. I hope you are having a great day!
I had a new to me shop do it (and the person working on it was new) and so don't know how much they drained out. He spilled the new fluid (I provided) all over my engine, bumper and some leaked down onto the skid plate, maybe when removing the funnel? I cleaned that up but I provided them 4 quarts and they only used 3 and obviously some was spilled, so that is why I am questioning the level.
After this experience I may be trying to do it myself next time.

This method is fine. It can be done a few times like this over a few weeks, this way you will get every drop. Volvo's have enough problems with transmissions. A ( Power flush ) like is done at the dealership can do more harm to the transmission than just a drain and refill. Dropping the pan and replacing the filter on the final ( drain and refill ) would be beneficial.

Filter is deep inside the AW55-50, can't be accessed short of a rebuild. Only reason to remove "pan" (i.e. valve body cover) is to swap solenoids or do VB work.

I had a customer with a C60 who was told by a dealership and an independent foreign car repair shop that the transmission was shot. Her ATF was pitch black. Told her I could do a ATF flush / fluid exchange and see what happens with no guarantees ... and guess what ... the transmission smoothed out! I used Valvoline's universal synthetic ATF. Hey! I just bought a used 2007 Volvo S80 with 170k miles, and I've noticed that the car jerks when shifting into gears and when
accelerating (I sped up when the light turned green and the car lurched a couple of times).
I was considering changing out the transmission fluid, but I was hoping for your input before I do it.
Do you think draining and filling the trans fluid would help in any way? If not, do you think I should do it just for safe measures?
I'm sorry, I don't know all that much about vehicles lol!
I also have no clue what all the person who previously had this car did to it.
The AC doesn't even blow! I'm thinking the blower motor should be replaced, because when I turn the AC on, I can check the hood and there's
a tube that gets really cold, but nothing's blowing out the vents.
Sorry about the spill of info! I'm just making sure I get bang for my buck lol.

The noise is probably coming from the top center and bottom motor mounts. Watch this video: th-cam.com/video/nxvgyu5U22U/w-d-xo.html Check your fuse box for the blower motor fuse. If the fuse is not blown, it's probably your motor resistor or motor needing replacement.

This is not a transmission flush or fluid exchange as mentioned in the video description; therefore we were not trying to get the last drop out of a partial fluid drain. 3 1/2 quarts is enough for a drain & fill. Our description explains why.

Not to mention you should always wait until the fluid quantity is checked after filling and the test drive. Then you put the splash shields back on. If no leaks you can get a set of drive on ramps to get clearance for installation of splash shield.
