I'm interested in changing the flui on a S80 I purchased but I'm worried. I had a Audi several years ago that had high mileage on it when I purchased it so wanted to change the transmission fluid. Once the new fluid was in, the Audi couldn't move at all when drive was engaged. The shop said the clutches in transmission were so badly burned, they could not pick up the new fluid. They actually threw the old fluid back in the transmission to get the car to move again. My question is... Should you change the fluid on a high mileage car if you're not sure if it's ever been changed? Is there any test that can be done before changing the fluid to know if it's ok to change it?
After watching this excellent video I became motivated to change the fluid in my 2018 S60. I've had it for about 6 months and it would occasionally shift with a thump. It has 93k miles and pretty sure it hasn't been changed before as the fluid was quite dirty. Overall it was relatively easy although the fill plug was really tight and took a lot of force to remove. Surprisingly I didn't even make a big mess which is my specialty. After the second fill I plugged in the scanner and the fluid was already at 33C. but I was surprised how long it took to get to 50C. I didn't time it but pretty sure it was more than 30 minutes. Finally, I took it for a short drive and it seems to shift better than before.
This is one of the best how to automotive videos I have seen. I purchased the kit and the wrong one but you guys helped me out by sending me for free the one piece that was different! The drain screw T40 had been previously stripped. With a dremel tool I cut a slot so that I could use a large flat head screw driver to take it out. (rather then drill and easy outs). Thank You.
Perfect video...thorough, well explained. I love it when you tell us the exact tool sizes. Also very organized and clean. Thanks, I'll I view more from you!
I really enjoyed to see the care you took doing this work. Everything from being clean and using a torque wrench to not overtightening the screws that hold splash shield. If everyone took that amount of care our cars would be better and I would gladly hire a mechanic for repairs and services.
you should let the transmission sit for 10 seconds in every gear (both ways up and back)...this will dilute the fluid properly the first two drains and give you a closer to bright red at final fill.
For my 2019 XC40 I removed approx. 2.5-L of Tx fluid from a cold Tx and engine. I did not use a scan tool to monitor fluid level at the end. I did what the video instructed: drained first, then added 4-qt, restarted engine and rowed the gears (didn't run long enough to get up to temp), then drained exactly the 4-qt I put in during the 1st refill. Lastly, I measured exactly the same amount I removed when I first drained it (2.5-L) and refilled with exactly that at the last fill.
I do exactly the same. It works fine as long as the current fluid was set at the factory. The key is not to let it warm up too much so the volume does not change.
It seems to be running just fine. Been quite some time since I did. But you're right this will work as long as temp during the drain is the same temp as the fluid I put in and we presume the fluid level in the Tx was correct from the factory to begin with. So far so good though.

Everyone: DO NOT attempt to bypass reading the temperature using a scan tool. It needs to be at the temperature range mentioned so that final level is correct. Do not risk over or worse, under filling your transmission by using one of those “good enough” methods such as using a laser thermometer or whatever else you come up with
Fluid expands when heated and contracts when allowed to cool down. Why not just measure the drained old fluid and allow to cool down at room temperature. When done, that is the right level of the new fluid to fill. It seemed that the process shown here may not be necessary... What do you think???
@@bioret No has tried the 'cooling' approach yet. Unless you have a fluid leak on your transmission 'vault', the drained fluid should be the right volume to replace. This is a science fact. I still wonder why no one has thought of this...
@@tomgeronimo3090 I’ve seen it mentioned in ATF drain and fill forums for other cars. I’m not totally opposed to it. @@tomgeronimo3090 I have let the car cool overnight, drained, measured and filled with exactly the same volume of fluid (at the same temperature as the drained fluid). I do this every 30K miles and have had no issues.
I did my friend C30 with an AW55 transmission recently, but the method I used was different. After drining the gearbox & refilling , we the disconnected the oil output to the oil cooler , then ran the engine for a couple of seconds to push a litre of oil out, stopped the engine & replaced a litre. This was carried out 5 times, or untill the oil is clear. This method greatly reduces the new oil mixing with the old oil.
The shops and dealers in my area have a different (and better in my opinion) method. They remove the lines and set up an empty bucket for the new fluid and the supply line sucks in fresh fluid from a large container. They usually bill me for 12qts. Then they just start the engine and let the pump cycle out all the old fluid. When the fluid coming out turns new, they shut the car off, put all the lines back, reset the fluid counters, and set the level.
On my first attempt to change the transmission fluid. My small drain plug was not the standard , t30 too small and t40 too large. I have three Torx driver sets (SnapOn, Gearwrench and Duralast) but none included a t35. If you don’t own a t35 might be a good idea to buy one.

Hello! Many thanks! for this valuable Video. I have a Volvo s60 Diesel. D3 Year model 2018. Automatic Gearbox. It's called the TF-71SC. Do you do the same way as you do in this Video, when you change the gearbox oil on my car? Thanks! From Tommy Bertilsson from Sweden
Yes. That is correct in park. I believe you should run thru all gears, pausing briefly in each and then check level in park at proper fluid temperature. At least that is how I do it.
Great video, thanks. Although shouldn’t you also drop the pan and change the filter and gasket? Also, is it not necessary to complete the VIDA/DICE procedure, just bring the car up to operating temperature before final fill?
An adaption just resets the transmission computer to new fluid. The transmission is "smart" and has a program that will adjust shift points, calculate shift times, etc to maximize smoothness and minimize wear as the fluid gets old. Changing the fluid? Reset the adaptions.
Great video! I found a similar kit on your website for the TF-80SC 6 speed gearbox, but the fitment only included the petrol versions. Do you have a kit for a 2015 Volvo XC70 D5 AWD (215 hp) ? Thanks!
Be nice if you got a reply on this. No one seems to know for sure. Some research from posters on swede speed and other sites indicate that the counter works (or initiates counting) when a certain temperature is reached. I think ultimately after a certain number a DTC is set indicating transmission service required. I get the impression that the counter need not be reset. If you intend on owning the car long-term it's probably advisable to obtain the knockoff Vida dice soft and hardware to enable you to delve into the brains and make adjustments including the transmission reset as necessary.
Great tutorial love the way u explain everything so well . I have a 2012xc90 2.4 d5 I take it there is no filter to be changed I've done a bit of research and it doesn't seem like there is thanks in advance
One question: If you control in the last step the level...the motor is running..OK . but must the automatic stand at neutral/ park or in drive/ backwarts ?
Hey Grat Video. Quick one,,, why there is oil coming out (05:30) from the level plug.. since the same plug is used afterwards to set maximum level..when no oil is no more dripping ??
@@yiabbadi Hi...Yes, I can just imagine the conversation: "Hi Mr Dealer...Look I've done my own transmission fluid change and totally by-passed your expensive showroom, workshop & highly paid technicians.... I need a 'reset' on the software.... will $5 cover it?" Good luck with that. The real Volvo technicians pay thousands of $$$$$ to upgrade their testing and analysis equipment...directly to Volvo...for their software updates. It's another industry altogether.

My volvo dealer says not to change my transmission fluid on my 2005 s40 2.4 with 210,000 Km. I'm confused. I just want to change my fluid so it run smoother.
The procedure I saw and did on mine was a real pain. Disconnect the return hose from the trans cooler into the trans. Use a peice of hose to extend that hose into a container you can see the fluid level in. Put a hose with a funnel attached to the tube where the return hose went into the transmission. Start the engine and run it until 2 quarts have been pumped into the container. Shut engine off an pour 2 quarts of fluid into the funnel going into the trans. Repeat. Shift through the gears as you are repeating. I did I think I did 12 quarts with the procedure.
Great video! I was trying to T55 to loose up the screw for the transmission oil box but it appears the screw was frozen- any thing that can help to loose it up?
Why there is such an excessive fluid amount when the T40 plug is undone for the first time? It should have been filled in up to the plug level, and it seems that it has been overfilled? Where is that extra fluid coming from? It is because the level is set when the car is running and the fluid is circulating somewhere in a gearbox? Strange procedure I would say... Another question - is there a filter you need to change as well? Thanks!
can this still be done after around 100,000 km? (~60,000 miles) dont know the service history of the car but if I'd had to guess I'd say it has never been changed
This process works in the 2003 xc70 ? I'm 3rd owner and no one has done any maintenance on the car it has 220000 miles on it im afraid I may be to late and have other issues but I'm starting with maintenance stuff before I dig deep Into a rebuilt Transmission so the D&R process I'm doing ty can a person put in a additive in the Trans fluid to help an older high millage transmission ?
Hello again wee question have u ever heard of doing an change of oil on an xc90 with 119k miles that has maybe never had a great oil change before to cause issues after doing the 2 flushes and fill . Also is it important to do a TCM update
This is rather common - old oil being replaced by too much clean oil has been known to reveal problems (not technically cause them - the problem was already there, but the dirty oil was hiding it). For this reason I prefer a simpler procedure: drain, measure what came out, put that much new back in, call it a day. Do it every other oil change.
Hi there love your videos I've just done the gear oil change like u have shown on 2012 xc90 2.4 d5 12ltrs of oil so first drain then fill drain then fill drain then final fill is it normal for 1250ml to come back out with engine running at 51 plus degrees tha k you look forward to your reply . Scared to drive it incase not enough oil in box 😮
Excellent video. Thank you for posting. It looks straightforward enough apart from the oil temperature and the car needing to be level so front ramps or jacking front up will not work, and unfortunately, i dont have access to a hydraulic ramp... I guess ill have to take it to Volvo for this job $$$$ 😬
Nice video! Maybe you guys know, so it could help me I live abroad and love DIYing my Volvo but it’s a model never sold in the US A google search brought me my V40 has the very same T5 2.0 engine with 8-speed Aisin So my question is Is the procedure likely to be the same?
hey ive done it myself before and getting ready to do it again.. was hoping for a video to refresh my memory but no luck. From what I remember jack the car up, take out airbox, find dipstick, drain (should get about 4L), fill through dipstick hole, shift through the gears, check dipstick and add fluid if needed.

Great video, thanks. Although shouldn’t you also drop the pan and change the filter and gasket?
Also, is it not necessary to complete the VIDA/DICE procedure, just bring the car up to operating temperature before final fill?
This is a sealed transmission
There is no filter.
Would you suggest doing an 'adaption' after changing the oil? And what exactly does an adaption do?
An adaption just resets the transmission computer to new fluid. The transmission is "smart" and has a program that will adjust shift points, calculate shift times, etc to maximize smoothness and minimize wear as the fluid gets old. Changing the fluid? Reset the adaptions.
I'm afraid to ask the dealer how much they would charge to reset the adaptations.

Thanks for the video! Just ordered the refill kit from you guys and with the video it should be easy peasy.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video!
I found a similar kit on your website for the TF-80SC 6 speed gearbox, but the fitment only included the petrol versions.
Do you have a kit for a 2015 Volvo XC70 D5 AWD (215 hp) ?
Thanks!
wow, this guy is awesome! You guys rock thank you, this is why I buy from you guys and no one else.
Don’t you need to reset the “Transmission fluid change “ counter?
Be nice if you got a reply on this. No one seems to know for sure. Some research from posters on swede speed and other sites indicate that the counter works (or initiates counting) when a certain temperature is reached. I think ultimately after a certain number a DTC is set indicating transmission service required. I get the impression that the counter need not be reset. If you intend on owning the car long-term it's probably advisable to obtain the knockoff Vida dice soft and hardware to enable you to delve into the brains and make adjustments including the transmission reset as necessary.
According to Volvo VIDA instructions the transmission oil counter should be reset after the oil change.
How do you access / get VIDA?
Great video! Anyone know why the small plug was removed when trying drain the transmission? Don’t just remove the big plug will do the job?
this video helped to replace transmission oil in Mazda CX-9 2012 same transmission and procedure..well done
Glad we could help!
Great tutorial love the way u explain everything so well . I have a 2012xc90 2.4 d5 I take it there is no filter to be changed I've done a bit of research and it doesn't seem like there is thanks in advance

@@Bob-nu3xe great thanks so I take it u leave it alone
Great video! I'm doing the oil change on Monday. Just one question: shouldn't the TCM be updated after the oil change?
I heard that too, But one needs the Vida-Dice system to reset the parameters.
Please do a video on how to change the timming belt. Thank you
Can i use cheaper non branded oil for the multiple flushes and fill.with the original volvo transmission oil at the final?

An interesting and educative video. Good one
Hey Grat Video. Quick one,,, why there is oil coming out (05:30) from the level plug.. since the same plug is used afterwards to set maximum level..when no oil is no more dripping ??

yes dealer does reset
@@yiabbadi Hi...Yes, I can just imagine the conversation:
"Hi Mr Dealer...Look I've done my own transmission fluid change and totally by-passed your expensive showroom, workshop & highly paid technicians.... I need a 'reset' on the software.... will $5 cover it?"
Good luck with that.
The real Volvo technicians pay thousands of $$$$$ to upgrade their testing and analysis equipment...directly to Volvo...for their software updates. It's another industry altogether.

I’m sure glad that Volvo has made changing tranny fluid so complex and expensive. otherwise you wouldn’t think you were doing it on a Volvo.
🤣
Tip - when removing air intake, plastic ages and becomes less flexible warm the joint with a hair dryer the plastic becomes more flexible to work makes easy to remove
Thanks for video. I heard I might need a filter change as well though, which filter would that be?
My volvo dealer says not to change my transmission fluid on my 2005 s40 2.4 with 210,000 Km. I'm confused. I just want to change my fluid so it run smoother.
We always recommend changing fluids, even the ones that are considered "lifetime"!
Thank you.
If you have the aw 55 transmission use only JWS 3309 spec oil Mobil is a good choice
@@jamesringler987 or Toyota Type IV which can normally be purchased locally at a Toyota dealership for a very reasonable price.
Vill you possibly also do the same procedure for Aisin AW55 transmission on p1 volvo please?
The procedure I saw and did on mine was a real pain. Disconnect the return hose from the trans cooler into the trans. Use a peice of hose to extend that hose into a container you can see the fluid level in. Put a hose with a funnel attached to the tube where the return hose went into the transmission. Start the engine and run it until 2 quarts have been pumped into the container. Shut engine off an pour 2 quarts of fluid into the funnel going into the trans. Repeat. Shift through the gears as you are repeating. I did I think I did 12 quarts with the procedure.
I have 2013/2014 XC90, first gen. Do you need to reset the transmission fluid counter using Volvo DiCE for the 2nd gen?

Thanks for the video, I was getting ready to change the fluid in our 2013 XC90.
No problem Aaron hope this helped!

very helpful & clear. This Aisin transmission is used in lots of other makes too e.g. Toyota & BMW
Thanks!
No filter to be done on this one! Completely normal for fluid to come out since it is off and not at operating temp, being pumped through the system.
can this still be done after around 100,000 km? (~60,000 miles) dont know the service history of the car but if I'd had to guess I'd say it has never been changed
Same question from me, but for around 150.000 km, on used car, without previous oil changes. Many claims that is risky to change oil on high mileage.
French dealership mechanic told me to do it at 100 000 kms.
Im doing it on 190k km so I think it’s better late then never, not doing a flush now but in the future if I feel like everything’s good.
What are the part numbers of the O-rings?
This process works in the 2003 xc70 ? I'm 3rd owner and no one has done any maintenance on the car it has 220000 miles on it im afraid I may be to late and have other issues but I'm starting with maintenance stuff before I dig deep Into a rebuilt Transmission so the D&R process I'm doing ty can a person put in a additive in the Trans fluid to help an older high millage transmission ?
Best repair video I have seen. Very clear and precise. Do you have one for the valve body replacement?
Thank you! Not at the moment, but something we plan to do in the future!

Will that Maxicheck reset the fluid counter on the Volvo? I'll buy one if it will. If not, is there one that can do it?
Hi there love your videos I've just done the gear oil change like u have shown on 2012 xc90 2.4 d5 12ltrs of oil so first drain then fill drain then fill drain then final fill is it normal for 1250ml to come back out with engine running at 51 plus degrees tha k you look forward to your reply . Scared to drive it incase not enough oil in box 😮
Awesome vid, what can I do if my scanner cannot show the trans fluid temp? as you said it should be around 50C on the final drain...
😥
Nice video!
Maybe you guys know, so it could help me
I live abroad and love DIYing my Volvo but it’s a model never sold in the US
A google search brought me my V40 has the very same T5 2.0 engine with 8-speed Aisin

Is the procedure likely to be the same?
Great detailed presentation.
Any instruction for c30 2008 automatic ATF fluid check +drain and fill?
hey ive done it myself before and getting ready to do it again.. was hoping for a video to refresh my memory but no luck. From what I remember jack the car up, take out airbox, find dipstick, drain (should get about 4L), fill through dipstick hole, shift through the gears, check dipstick and add fluid if needed.
On the second drain wasted many transmission fluid for cleaning. Is there another method to clean the dirt stuff without second drain.
Amazing video
Any chance you can do serpentine belt and tensioner replacement video for 2015 s60 b4204t11 engine and also for timing kit replacement?
Btw I’ve noticed you’ve put 8 liters of transmission oil, isn’t it should be 6.6 liter?
So it's 3.2 ltrs of fluid will be ok for drain and fill . Without check

Hi, Do you have to reset a counter in the onboard computer to tell that you changed the gearbox oil ?
Can this be done with the Maxicheck MX808 ?
I have read this in the VIDA tool. It is to avoid later-on a DTC (in case of heavy load).
