    An important factor in reducing poverty is reduction of corruption.

    Excellent news! You should provide some statistics on state-wise corruption indicators too. Corruption is rampant and is hurting everybody - India has a poor corruption index. Everything will improve if corruption is tackled.

    From 2015 to 2021, India's HDI rose but it lost one place in global rankings
    Progress has been made but not as fast as imagined

    • @anchitdutta3627
      @anchitdutta3627 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Because HDI calculations only include one standard of living indicator: per capita income. And this episode pretty much covered the fact that our standard of living indicators have seen excellent improvement, but not much in health and education.

    • @varoonnone7159
      @varoonnone7159 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@anchitdutta3627
      You clearly don't know what you're talking about
      HDI is based on a weighted average of per capita GDP at PPP, life expectancy at birth and mean number of schooling years

    • @anchitdutta3627
      @anchitdutta3627 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@varoonnone7159 my dear, that comes under health and education respectively. I'm talking about the sectors like sanitation, electrification, housing and cooking fuel. Is that included in HDI? HDI is a great index, but I'm simply justifying why India hasn't improved as much in HDI rankings despite making inroads in several standard of living indices

      You started saying that HDI was based solely on per capita income. I get it. It's the only HDI indicator in the "standard of living" index. Your comment was a bit confusing
      I'm not denying that improvements have been made but everything is relative
      When compared to the most privileged communities of the 18th century, we all have stratospherically higher HDI and a better multidimensional poverty index. After all, they didn't have tap water and had high child mortality rates
      India has improved on a lot of indices but if other countries are improving faster, it's still disappointing

    • @anchitdutta3627

      @@varoonnone7159 I get it now, you misunderstood my comment. Peace. My previous comment also meant that if one purely looks at the standard of living indices which I mentioned above, then India's performance exceeds many other developing countries. Thats why the UNDP report praised us.
      But you are spot on regarding the health and education front. We have failed to keep up the pace with other developing economies in our bracket. Hence, we have fallen in the HDI rankings. The trajectory needs a lot more work there, especially education.

This figure was only achieved due to manmohan government schemes like MANREGA. The wealth generated in india mostly went to the ultra rich.

Based on this report original data source Kerala should be less than 0.030 (or 0.30%) but state of Kerala conduct own highly dedicated survey to identify destitute and identified total 2-3 lakhs (200k) individuals or 61000 families. The RSF ranked India is a worse place for journalists than Afghanistan without considering per capita basis or qualitative information. India saw the steep decline even under MMS because they don't have reliable data.
      I am not denying there are problems in India even as a right leaning Individual. Are there Twitter mobs? Yes. Is there an editorial control over journalism to stay shareholder and govt friendly? Yes. Is there occasional violence or government action against journalists? Yes. But this was true of every era of Indian journalism.
      To compare Afghanistan has only two journalist deaths(even this was a bombing of a journalist convention) because most journalists have fled the country, very few travel and last year Taliban banned female journalists from appearing on screen even if they wore a full niqab. These are Taliban friendly women journalists btw.
      There is simply no sense of equivalence or comparison. We fare worse than them on the ranking, somehow?

    • @surajs5913
      @surajs5913 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That can be explained by the fact that multidimensional poverty is not based on the money that a persn has but the amount of basic facilities that he has access to - while gdp per capita for bottom 90% of country is based on income/rupeeEls earned.
      To earn rupees you need to first have basic facility like house, basic education, etc. Once ypu have that, it will take time for that to translate to actual income but without that base, the transition to real income will be delayed by decades instead of years...

      @@mehrourbadloe8339 GDP does NOT measure INCOME, GDP measures economic activity. In China's case, much of the GDP boost, especially since 2008, was MAINLY because of the state directly or indirectly spending on massive infrastructure projects, a lot of it underutilized and some even unutilized. It seems the very purpose of building them was with the intention of boosting GDP. The growth was steroidal in nature and not organic. In normal economies, there is always a balance between private and public expenditure, so per capita GDP does reasonably indicate income levels as well, but it may not fully apply to China.
      If an average Chinese really were to be making 5 to 6 times as much as an average Indian, then there is NO WAY China would still be running sweatshops making knick-knacks that are the cheapest.

      @surajs5913 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mehrourbadloe8339 but that is the reason why gdp per capita in purchasing power parity is a better measure than gdp per capita in nominal terms because purchasing power parity measures the actual purchasing powet of people in India in Indian market conditions with whatever rupees they have. Since as far as i know, poverty striken people do not travel abroad or buy imported goods, poverty cam be better measured on the basis of the purchasing power they have in Indian market for Indian goods.
      As for china, if you want to believe its gdp figures then go ahead. Some western researchera however claim that based on satellite imaging data of light pollution over china at night, chinese have lied about their gdp every year. Adjusting the gdp based on this research, they claim chinas gdp is actually only 40% of the claimed figure - which is about twice as big as Indias economy...
