Excellent presentation that is clear, engaging and entertaining. His statement reminded me of something Thomas Sowell said, “There are not solutions. Only trade offs”.
True, but it’s concentrated in a containment facility, not in the atmosphere. Although if they can get molten salt reactors going they’ll be able to use the spent fuel for fission, produce more energy, and drastically decrease the half life of the fuel!

Great to see Scott here. I read the study commissioned by the DOE that Scott helped author on natural gas reserves in the 4 major US shale plays. As the US consumes around 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per year looks like, according to Scott’s study we’re lucky to have 50 years worth left. Add the fact we’re exporting 12.5 billion cubic feet per day (enough to heat 60 million American homes every day) so the IS exporters can make higher profits while the US domestic price rises and anyone with sense knows we better develop all forms of energy ASAP.
Great line in the middle of his misinformation. His career has been in oil and gas and he's being paid by oil and gas companies to spread the garbage keynote around the world. He totally ignoring the biggest parts of renewables story or any of the modern innovations in renewable energy. Solar panel farms no longer get knocked out by hail or snow, wind turbines are not getting barred. 95% of EV car batteries are recycled meaning they don't need to be mined over and over again. Nuclear is making a come back. All facts he is leaving out. I can go on and on about 100 things he's leaving out.
This cannot be repeated, and emphasized, often enough. A flock of private jets arriving at a climate conference should signal in every thinking mind, 'These people are not serious about this supposed problem'. The wealthy who take time to talk up rising sea levels buying waterfront property should signal in every thinking mind, 'These people are not serious about this supposed problem'.

I'm no scientists, I'm just an electronics major. But I have been making the same arguments for years. All you need to do is look at a chart of energy density by source. The answers are clear. Nuclear, with all it's trade-offs, is still the ONLY technology that exists today that can possibly solve the world's need for energy (NEED, not want), while reducing emissions enough to matter on a global scale. Why? Energy density. Simple Joules per Kg of material. Then compare it to Lithium-Ion battery storage. Anyone who can do basic arithmetic can see that it's the only way out of the trap. Even then, we still need portable sources of energy, and when you compare Gasoline/Diesel/Natural Gas to Li-Ion or Solar you see why we still use it.
The whole Idea that we should not demoralize our enemies and lock them up for these crimes, does nothing to stop this catastrophic explosion of my Country. Interesting how everyone pushing climate change is trying to impoverish wealthy nations in the name of saving the planet when all observable evidence shows the solution is exactly the opposite. One of the most instructive videos about energy I've seen on YT, ever. It should be shown to schools and universities, worldwide, to bring back rationality on the energy discourse. Thank you Dr Tinker!
This is old news. Consider broadening your information sources beyond TH-cam. TH-cam has started a practice of demonetizing and demoting any channel or video that varies from 'established opinion" in medicine. It's only a matter of time before that expands to science and any area where there is controversy.
I heard about a solar farm in Nebraska being completely destroyed by a hailstorm, leaving a toxic mess. A guy in the comments said he was actually on that committee to decide whether or not to install them in the first place, and the first thing he said was "Well, what about hailstorms?" The response he got was "Who said anything about hailstorms?" Realizing the 'quality' of individuals he was dealing with, he noped the heck out and wanted nothing to do with it. Did I mention the solar farm was built on land that had fertile soil that could have been used for crops, but now is completely ruined?
solar is a desert thing. don't build it on arable land. this isn't a hard thing to unless of course you put it to a committee. committee will install wind turbines under water under water and solar farms on the dark side of the moon.
I only wish more people would listen to talks like this one - and specifically this one. There need not be any emotional tie to this or any other so-called controversial topics. How many people will say “I feel like…” and how many say “I think that…” Last but not least, take the Thomas Sowell approach: There are no solutions, only tradeoffs. So we must ask ourselves these three questions. 1. At what cost? 2. Compared to what? 3. What data do we have to support?
I asked a similar question to the climate change activists that goes: "you'll be ballin, and at what cost"? Then they treated me like I'm somehow a party pooper when I showed them their bills of open pit mining operations.
Pls read my comment above . This is all based on false theories and assumptions. We need CO2. More of it isn’t going to raise global temperatures significantly if at all . Climate catastrophes have been foretold in the Bible . Turn to God for rest for your souls.
I do wonder why there are so many actors in politics. I would say it is him because I dont believe or trust the mainstream narrative. Although I must say Obama made an amazing speech on this channel. The only climate change is a financial one and nothing to do with natural weather cycles.
The true art of science, never let a good story get in the way of the facts, because the facts tells the truth and a good story only plays with emotions. Scott's presentation uses the scientific facts to drive thinking emotions. So well presented.
Really??? This is 'the facts'?? As a former government forest scientist in Ontario, Canada who was fired in 1982 for daring to present THE FACTS about the abuse of Ontario's forests to see their demise despite warnings from forest scientists, this reminds me of the slick presentations of those who were only interested in protecting the status quo, no matter what the writing really was 'on the wall'. (By the way, as predicted by 1971, many of Canada's largest forest product mills had closed their doors, leaving devastated communities in their wake). Take one example of the deep hypocrisy behind this video. About 7 minutes in, Mr. Tinker credibly notes that 'poor countries cannot afford to clean up their environments'.... Real science does NOT exclude all the factors needed to be considered in any 'hypothesis' The reality IS that, for the sake of profiteering, only, vast resources on this planet have been removed from geographies that are now impoverished. This, unthankfully, comes at the hands of, as Mr. Tinker does imply, formerly rich nations which now teeter on the brink of major 'economic' crises BECAUSE they left so many parts of this planet impoverished, for their own gain. This FACT is something that big business, ESPECIALLY the Economic Geology field Mr. Tinker seems most vested in, refuse to acknowledge in slick presentations like this. Twenty minutes with slick pics does NOTHING to create 'civil dialogue' on a REAL PROBLEM facing our species. It merely serves to STEER the dialogue in the direction which the friends of 'the presenter' will sponsor and then applaud. Visit the ARC goals to understand WHY this is a major problem in this presentation. Don MacAlpine, formerly of Nipigon, Ontario CANADA

@@Randsurfer Here's what I got out of Dr. Miller's presentation. 1) It's obvious that oil and gas won't last forever. We have an electric future, just not at the schedules mandated by the government. There's no way California can go full EV by 2035. They lack generating capacity, a grid, infrastructure, and automobile manufactures just can't make that many EV. We all know this. Last week Ford, GM and Toyota pulled out of the EV market. 2) The poor can't afford expensive solar and wind. The Admin has a policy of scarcity, keeping people poor. A better way is to help the people become more wealthy, then not only can they afford cleaner energy, they care more about the environment. 3) Remember the clean, reliable and abundant triangle? Somehow this gentleman reminds of Robin Williams, not only physically (somewhat), but he is quick and witty; also very knowledgeable. Thank you for your input.
Hello from austria and thank you for the access to this kind of information. This topic is decades old and still going on. Our postal trucks here in austria were electric allready in 1910 or something. There were also electric cars from 1905 like the Viktoria that could travel for 50 miles or 80 kilometers allready back then. I was also lucky to run into a Dr. who was in his late 70's 3 years ago in Vienna who told me about working for the government on a project in the 60's. While driving around the former minister back then in an electric car, the minister said to him something like "You will see, in the next 10 years Electric cars will rise to 10% to 20% of all cars". We are now coming to the end of 2023 and we were at 2.1% in reality while at the same time that is of course no real solution to anything. The left vs right ramble has to stop and politics and education have to return back to where they were. Seperate from each other as much as possible. When the time has come that professors get fired for asking and debating questions (and people in other fields of work) it is the time to ask questions rather than stop asking questions. There is no need for a better climate when we accept Monsantos approach for example of creating a seed monopoly etc. Politicians get elected for a reason and I can not understand why some managers have a law based responsibility but politicians don't. Nobody is accountable for anything and nobody is actually nobodies boss. What I found very interesting is, that someone like A. Getty sponsors the climate emergency fund which sponsory the climate glue people for example (who get paid and insurance for doing that by the way) while at the same time, her being in control of an oil empire her father built. Think about that. In reality, the costs for energy are rising and I think that is the goal. Even going green has only money as the goal. It is always because of money and this topic is no exception.
This is hands down the best presentation explaining the energy conundrum that I have seen in years. The moment the energy sources are dropped one by one and then the lights are dimmed by 94% actually gave me goosebumps. Welcome back to the caves. Fantastic job!
“When we remove doubt from science, it becomes religion” Such wise words. Think about how difficult it is to talk to someone about climate or a vaccine when they refuse to doubt that they know everything about the topic. It’s sad how difficult it is to simply discuss things these days without being attacked
You appear to be as ignorant as your words. God bless those who are not as mentally gifted as the average where they have to throw out this blanket nonsense. You must be very blessed. Is that religion or science? I’d say it is your biology.
If we could get everyone on both sides of the debate to sit down and listen to this articulate, intelligent man, we might just start to make some headway! Brilliant.
The information in this talk wouldn't really enlighten anybody, on either side, though; and it wouldn't somehow magically convince those with power, wealth, and influence, to want less of those things.

The discussion Dr. Tinker had on Jordan Peterson's podcast ran very much along this vein, and this is some discussion. The advantages of eschewing the binary approach to the energy that we all use - or would use, when it is available to those parts of the world that desperately need an inexpensive and reliable source of energy - become crystal clear when listening to Dr. Tinker. This is an amazing and must-hear message.
In a world of inward-looking virtual signaling and visceralism, these are the dialogs that put us back where we should intellectually be as a specie. Just thank you.
I have only recently discovered ARC. This talk has left me realise how dangerous ignorance is. Thank you for such dynamic and clear presentation. I wish I could have been there to express my gratitude to you for deepening my understanding so much.
The problem with the Green lobby is summed up by the Aristotle quote at the start...fingers in their ears whilst throwing a tantrum. I never tolerated that behaviour from my children.
Nah, the problem with the green lobby is they are watermelons - green on the outside, red on the inside. They're all "former" communists who now see the environmental movement as a good way to continue pursuing wealth redistribution. Or at the very least, handicapping capitalist western countries economically by getting them to do it to themselves through restrictive energy policies that "developing" countries like China and India don't have to follow.
Thank you . I have been teaching Energy AND the Environment for a few years now and I have known all along what it was missing: Energy Justice, Energy Poverty. Your talk inspired me to include those elements in the next iteration... and I'll use some of your content to help guide the effort. Thanks.
'Putin went into Ukraine and said I'm gonna weaponise gas' ...think about that for a minute. When German industralists and Gasprom with the blessing of the German govt, financed via Austria, agreed on Nord gas pipeline projects, who objected? The US, but they are on the other side of the Atlantic. When Biden was questioned about Nord 2 he said that if Ukraine is attacked then we will find a way to stop Nord 2. Very interesting comment about freedom and democracy in a commercial setting. Food for thought. If you read Jacques Bord's analysis of eastern Ukraine you will find that Ukraine increased its bombing of the Donbass exponentially with more talk from Biden that 'Russia would invade'. Ramp up the pressure then shift blame quickly and invert the truth. This is a US modus operandi. After Nord 2 was destroyed Victoria Nuland said its now a huge hunk of metal at the bottom of the sea. Blinken said it was a great opportunity for the US as they and Norway started sending gas to Germany at inflated prices to get German industry off cheap gas and stop them developing good relations with Russia. Very clever. But this man from ARC who talks about 'education' does not appear to be educated or he would know. Read Seymour Hersh about Nord 2.

Put an end to the distopian vision offered by the elites of Davos and the WEF gang. Bring individual Freedom and responsibility back to the forefront of a free and prosperous society. Thankyou.
Would you do be responsible with your "individual freedom" to lessen your negative consumption impacts on the world? I live in a collective and see daily that people don't even manage to recycle properly. Individual freedom is the argument lazy people use when they don't want to take responsibility.
Sadly, this video is pretty distopian too. Paints a pretty bad picture: we are currently unable to sustain our present lifestyles and alleviate the pollutive effects of them, and solar/wind are not sufficient to help. Nuclear might help. He didn't seem to offer any better direction for the future. Freedoms and responsibilities will obviously be critical - perhaps a user-pays approach to the cleanup costs of everyone's pollution will be a key driver. That way they can decide based on the costs of their actions.

So far the only solutions that have any improvement are bEV or not driving at all. Or some combination thereof. So if you are not a fan of EV then your choice is to stop driving and transportation. The partner solution is to have low emissions generation like wind and solar, or stop using electricity. Move toward low emissions refining and production, or stop consuming things. Low emissions heating and cooling, or we just bundle up and start migrating again. Those are the options and layers of solution options.

@johnnygreen7445 also... Batteries are recycled. We are working on recycling wind turbines. And yes, we are facing mass unemployment the next couple of decades because nearly every industry is reducing employment, and we are working to reduce consumption. One huge job loss will be in the petroleum and transportation industries for sure because the electrified alternatives and alternative generation are so much more efficient. This is why the smart people of the world not considered "wealth elite" are pushing for a massive increase in the value of labor. The only way to avoid mass starvation is to go back to single income households, where any one full-time job can support a modest household. And more jobs are full-time jobs with benefits. Go back to the days when working in a retail store, or a restaurant, or a factory is enough to support a whole family household. That is the only way to avoid mass starvation with the coming reduction in labor requirements. But you know, the wealth elite will resist raising the value of labor harder than anything else we are pushing them to do, so we are kinda stuck in this fate. But we will also face mass unemployment if the world falls to environmental disaster...so kinda a problem either way.

When writing a thesis in engineering in the early 1970s, I devised a poor depiction of a three way balance with the three E's; Energy, Environment, and Economy. My thesis advisor loved it. Always a balancing act.
The saddest thing about this excellent talk is not that energy needs are inevitably increasing, but that this talk is promoted as an "Honest & Sensible Conversation" as though it is a rare and remarkable thing. Well, in fact, it is these days. No one converses, discusses or even debates anymore: they shout. They wave wildly, get emotional, bellow "I, me, myself" a lot. If we stopped shouting at each other and actually talked and kept our egos out of the way, we'd get a lot more done.
Every speach like this needs to mention what i think is the elephant in the room. As CO2 increases plant growth rates are increasing. Is this good? Extremely.
I've worked with Lithium, it's incredibly volatile when it gets wet. EV's, as they are now, will kill quiet a few people while business tries to figure out, how not to kill their customers.
I’m not sure if you’re a bot or just dum. Lithium is reactive with water. Gasoline is volatile, and just as explosive. It’s not a real disadvantage for EVs when compared to internal combustion
This talk was very interesting and informative. It also feels very incomplete. I want to hear what this nuanced plan towards mitigating climate change may look like. Show a few options. Give my mind a moment to image the possibilities. Telling me the way we think about the binary choice is wrong is a fine start, but leaving me with little to follow leaves me hollow. I want to have the nuanced conversation. I want to learn ideas and help form and solidify them in public discourse. I would love to hear his next 20 min talk about what he wants to do.
This is my first encounter with ARC content and it's a bewildering - for me - organization because I find it *impossible to catagorize.* For example, here Scott Tinker talks like a preacher but he's talking science! And dad jokes. He's making sense. I know this *shouldn't* put me on my guard and feeling suspicious. Oddly, however, it does. Which can be quite stimulating in a very peculiar way.
Don't apologize for being on your guard. We have been lied to so often by so many, for their own personal gain, that we have every right to be suspicious. The danger of lying to people so much and so often, is that if and when someone chooses to tell the truth, no one wants to believe it. It's the predictable response the classic example of "the boy who cried "WOLF" too often. No one believed him when he finally told the truth and suffered the consequences.
Sure wind and solar are clean while they are working, but what is the cost to the environment to manufacture windmills and solar panels? And, what about their lifespan and cost to dispose of them when they no longer work? There is a gap between the dream and the reality. These people are selling something . . . and it isn't freedom.
I hope they watch too. But most of them are far too stupid to understand. Biden has no brain at all. The UK and Germany don't get it. Justin Trudeau can't remember what he had for lunch. China and India have it figured out though -especially China.
Well said, there is no renewable energy. Very good talk. I wish more people would be aware of the complexity of the global situation. I feel it's a bit late to wake up and try to fix this mess we've stuck ourselves in. Like 30-40 years too late.

The problem with helping poor countries is not there isn't enough food and resources. The problem is most if not all are unstable, misusing or stealing what they receive, corrupt governments and gangs, and most critical, the lack of transporting routes and distributing to get the things to the outlying villages.
Yep most poor countries in Africa are corrupt. Add the fact we’re exporting 12.5 billion cubic feet per day (enough to heat 60 million American homes every day) so the IS exporters can make higher profits while the US domestic price rises and anyone with sense knows we better develop all forms of energy ASAP.

What was it that did turn your perspective?

One of the most instructive videos about energy I've seen on YT, ever. It should be shown to schools and universities, worldwide, to bring back rationality on the energy discourse. Thank you Dr Tinker!
This is old news. Consider broadening your information sources beyond TH-cam. TH-cam has started a practice of demonetizing and demoting any channel or video that varies from 'established opinion" in medicine. It's only a matter of time before that expands to science and any area where there is controversy.
I heard about a solar farm in Nebraska being completely destroyed by a hailstorm, leaving a toxic mess. A guy in the comments said he was actually on that committee to decide whether or not to install them in the first place, and the first thing he said was "Well, what about hailstorms?" The response he got was "Who said anything about hailstorms?"
Realizing the 'quality' of individuals he was dealing with, he noped the heck out and wanted nothing to do with it.
Did I mention the solar farm was built on land that had fertile soil that could have been used for crops, but now is completely ruined?
We are using some farmland in Florida also. Why not a cover for every parking lot? Closer to the grid.
Didn't that happen somewhat recently?
solar is a desert thing. don't build it on arable land. this isn't a hard thing to unless of course you put it to a committee. committee will install wind turbines under water under water and solar farms on the dark side of the moon.

2. Compared to what?
3. What data do we have to support?

Everything pollutes. The clean energy is polluting. Everything is a tradeoff. Too me, nuclear is the most obvious least bad solution. 4) India is just get started and they already said to F... Off, they are going for coal. Nuclear would be better. 5) And this is just my point of view. I'm an engineer. Most of my friends are educated and to the left. They LOVE flying to Europe and Machu Pichu. Yet, all of them are concerned about the climate, want heavy mandates, but know they won't have to change their life styles much. They can afford it. If it's so bad, why don't they change? Stop flying? They all have $300/m electric bills. I want them to lead by example instead of mandating poverty to the poor and lower middle class. That's what I got out of it, a reminder that every source of energy is a tradeoff, stop exporting our pollution, and the poor can't afford clean energy. I hope this helps. All the best Landsurfer.

There is NO true EV. The electricity is probably generated from fossil fuels and the EV built in a factory using fossil fuels, etc
This is hands down the best presentation explaining the energy conundrum that I have seen in years. The moment the energy sources are dropped one by one and then the lights are dimmed by 94% actually gave me goosebumps. Welcome back to the caves. Fantastic job!

The discussion Dr. Tinker had on Jordan Peterson's podcast ran very much along this vein, and this is some discussion.

@@user-gf6gf2iy2k Am a bit baffled by the reactions to this video. This data on ever growing consumption of fossil energies and CO2 has been out for decades and used by many (gov, COP, activitists, etc) to push doing something about it. Excellent speech!! I love “ have you seen a lithium mine”. This is so true. Electric vehicles with batteries that eventually die is not the solution

Hands down, the absolute best array of powerful information in less than 25 minutes. INCREDIBLE!
You are impressed easily by one-sided information...
@@nielsnijmegen2917 ARE YOU IMPRESSED BY THE LIES OF GOVERNMENT THEN ???
@@angelakadeer1565 I get my information through in-depth research of different sources, that is also why I came here. By combining with my own knowledge and experience and by logical reasoning I can filter sense from nonsense.
Mr Scott absolutely love this lecture, well spoken, easy for people to understand and no nonsense! For someone who for a long time have felt that we in the west are rushing headless into a climate panic and make many wrong decisions on the way, find your speech inspiring, that there are people out there, professional and educated who understand this as a whole. You give me back some hope and I wish that politicians and decision makers see this and understand what you say and maybe there could be a smarter way forward.
I think that we need to lower emissions, no question, but it needs to be done right, thought through and with a plan.
Thank you! 👍
Politicians are getting kick-backs from the so-called "green" energy developers. That and they want to control everything we do, and limiting our access to power makes that easier for them. Don't kid yourself - they know this information - they do what they do for power and control.
Please take this presentation and play it in every school possible. About time we heard some reality and common sense ..
This didn't tell me anything I didn't already know... or suspect. But I still needed to hear it. So I reckon everyone else needs to hear it too?
Epic talk! Everyone should hear him.👍
More people need to listen to these video's
What a speech brilliant work!
Excellent presentation and slides! Now to watch again.
This should be made compulsory to watch
Thank you Scot, the real problem needs addressing ,planet over population with high materialistic wants ( I stress wants NOT needs )
You said what needed to be said and heard. Well done Sir!
True, unfortunately he didn’t have many answers though.
@@shiraz1736 he basically just said our current lifestyles are unsustainable and solar/wind aren't enough help to replace the hyrdocarbon element in these lifestyles. Yes, no answers proposed, just a bit fatalistic.
Great speech. The truth. Thank you.
Scott used to do talks at our geological meetings! He is spot on and informative!
That Aristotle quote alone at the beginning was worth the watch.
Actually, isn't an Aristotle quote, more of a misquote or misattribution.
Wonderful lecture. Anyone else see Robyn Williams on stage?
Simply awesome, well presented, realistic, scientific lecture... & it wasn't a bit boring!
It’s refreshing to hear common sense.
Where is the «thumbs up» times 1000?? This is the defining video on the global energy picture. This should be curriculum in ALL schools around the globe.
The intelligence in this room is way more than any politician can understand nor comprehend.
Brilliant thinker and communicator. Bravo.
Thanks for sharing this! 💯 Explained so that many people can understand what we face.
CO2 offset "..a shell game"; brilliant analogy.
Every speach like this needs to mention what i think is the elephant in the room. As CO2 increases plant growth rates are increasing. Is this good? Extremely.
All except for the part where we are clearing all the trees
I've worked with Lithium, it's incredibly volatile when it gets wet. EV's, as they are now, will kill quiet a few people while business tries to figure out, how not to kill their customers.
I think you mean reactive. Lithium doesn't become volatile until like 400c. Highly volatile means it evaporates really fast.
@@Ilove3SGTE th-cam.com/video/AIXTP-TgPEw/w-d-xo.html
I’m not sure if you’re a bot or just dum. Lithium is reactive with water. Gasoline is volatile, and just as explosive. It’s not a real disadvantage for EVs when compared to internal combustion
A real explanation of what is going on in this real world. It will concern our kids
Powerful talk. I hope world leaders are watching.
I hope they watch too. But most of them are far too stupid to understand. Biden has no brain at all. The UK and Germany don't get it. Justin Trudeau can't remember what he had for lunch. China and India have it figured out though -especially China.
Awesome! Nice to see someone illuminate the realities of energy and our civilization.
Outstanding presentation by someone honest and dealing with reality
Well said, there is no renewable energy. Very good talk. I wish more people would be aware of the complexity of the global situation. I feel it's a bit late to wake up and try to fix this mess we've stuck ourselves in. Like 30-40 years too late.
Wonderful pragmatic stuff that sorted out these same issues within my head that was having trouble organising them into a narrative.
Incredible presentation. Finally some common sense in this crazy climate change rhetoric.
Except several times he lists climate change is something to worry about.
@@Randsurfer And he shows the mindboggling increasing consumption of fossil fuels oil/gas/coal very clearly... without offering any hint on how to curb that.
Scratching my head wrt what his point was, besides poopooing non-fossil fuel efforts ?
I wish we could tradeoff our self-serving politicians with people with principles and competence.
While political authority is centralised, power will remain crantralised and politics will attract megalomaniacs and narcissists. While money is allowed in politics and conflicts of interest, politics will attract the morally bankrupt and corrupt.
100%
The planet needs people like Scott Tinker and Konstantin Kisin as leaders, straight forward global common sense thinking.
It is great to see an honest and factual take on energy and the the environment. Trade offs are the reality the climate zealots refuse to acknowledge.
And if western countries try to criticize them, they will immediately flash the "you white colonizer - us Africans the exploited" card and the racial card. Just look at the African diplomats in the UN. Most have more than 3 mansions in their countries while their people suffer from widespread poverty.
Really good talks going on...wish more people would watch it ..I shared this with all my children and the naysayers that I know.
It's unfortunate Honest and Sensible conversation don't generate votes. Great presentation, great information, great perspective thank you. Be even better if a course of action were suggestion.
