Man that dude breaking down remembering where he came from is crazy. The memories just hit him like a sack of bricks. I never knew someone could have PTSD just by being poor.
There is definitely a form of PTSD that poverty causes in those that suffer through it. My parents had to break the generational trauma that was poverty in our family.
It's definitely time for you to visit another nation then where the government has no concept of food stemps or the kind of financial assistance the low earning or unemployed get in Western countries. There are people who die due to lack of one meal a day, the bare minimum.. When one becomes successful after so much struggle, emotions will flow.
Yes, when the father cried about his arms hurting so badly from working that he couldn't sleep was incredibly moving. I think we tend to forget the struggles faced by those who came before us, especially in America. We need to wake up to the fact that the ultra wealthy in collaboration with our own government is ripping off the future for our children. Everyday pieces of our country are sold off, jobs requiring skilled labor keep going overseas, and the gap between rich and poor is swallowing the middle class. Soon it will be rich (paying little to no taxes) and the poor (paying their share as well as that of the wealthy). Our country could easily become filled with slums, increased homelessness, crime and few opportunities to save ones self.
Not possible because you need to understand why the rich are rich in the first place. Its because of us the middle class and low class consumers. We by consumerism directly or indirectly fund their businesses and keep the money flowing in their pockets, which they then use for expansionism. If by chance US or any country for that matter become homeless, slumified or has a general lack of money then the rich will fall as well. Imagine what we could do if we all follow a minimalist lifestyle all their smiles will fade away.
Everyone wants the slums to go away but no one wants to properly rehabilitate the residents by giving them proper space and facilities, as it's not economically feasible. What a paradox😔
The flats are still a considerable upgrade from living in a slum. In a slum, you’re lucky if you have 4 walls and electricity. Notice now that they have proper apartments, they are complaining that they don’t have gardens or a paved road. They got those flats for free, they shouldn’t expect luxury apartments.
I have lived in Mumbai in these living conditions. I came to mumbai as an engineer, i used to make 500 USD per month. The struggles and hostility of the city towards non rich stifled me. I moved to Ohio after living there for 3 years. And never have I ever thought about moving to a big city let alone Mumbai
The Old Man in the video at 18:14 was intense. That is the true feeling of how a labor would feel the pain in reality in any poor neighborhood in the world. I got tears in my eyes.
The pain of those memories for the father were palpable. He worked hard and not only provides for his family but all of those he now employs. He and his son are slumdog millionaires and earned every penny.
@@sebastian3004 That's the thing with coming out of poverty, you learn the things that need to be done to get yourself out of poverty, then you cannot stop. Because there is no end. I had lived in Bombay for one year in the 80's when I got my first job. At that time there was only one line of flats in my area and behind which was acres of barren land. That’s because of the number of people coming to Mumbai which is way more than the influx into any other city in India;many to make it in movies but never leave if they don’t.Obviously not everyone is going to have a place. It’s straining at its seams to function and it’s not due to a lack of efficiency. Its one of the most efficient places I’ve seen in India, just too many people. If the migration was more balanced to match the rest of the country,it would not be so extreme.Move Bollywood elsewhere, the place will get a reprieve.
Don't have to go that far to see extreme disparity......downtown montreal, canada.... luxury high rises, often occupied by some of mumbai's richest people......down below, scores of people sleeping in the rat infested park, a new liquor store opening up nearby to placate them........youth gangs targeting riders coming out of the nearby subway...neoliberalism is creating one big Mumbai for everyone.
@@billjoe39 actually prior to 1994 India had a closed off economy to trade and a heavy regulatory environment. We can’t automatically help people in the slums. The process isn’t as easy as it seems. You can’t just head into the slums and give money to people out of your pocket. Think before you make an opinion.
Do you think every rich man or woman was born rich or the money just fell heaven for him or her? No, most of them got there through hard work and set goals. Don't be jealous bro, you can do it too, just get out from your self pity and work a little harder.
No, they are not stup*d. This is the case across the world. In the West, even white families in the decades around 1950s still had large families. Poor usually don't have a retirement plans, their kids are their retirement plan. More kids, more hedge, they hope at least one will become successful.
Well funny update is that Babulal had lost the bid and DHARAVI development is handed over to ADANI GROUP to convert Dharavi into Multistorey society for rehabilitation of Dharavi's people.

The problem of undeveloped countries is that only a few regions, cities or even boroughs are developed. Which drives millions of people from poorest areas to migrate. To some of them is their only opportunity to survive. It saddens and maddens me that this is the world we live in
About the last family. Why is it that people who are so poor still decide to have many children? They enjoy their sex and then later complain that supporting so many children isn’t easy.
The struggle is for real. Older generations really did struggle in every country just to make a better life for their children. It’s really sad how some people suffer so much . Well done to all those who turned their lives around. What happens to the people living in the slums when their houses are demolished?are the poor people just thrown onto the streets so the rich can live in the new apartments?do they really get rehoused? I doubt they would be given free houses
Mumbai is a alpha city and is financially important city for global trade. So it makes sense to demolish the slums in the centre of the city which occupies more space with less people instead of efficient apartments. So the govt must make sure to rehabilitate those slum dwellers and then demolish them only to build apartments and commercial complexes.

Corruption in every department, no good infrastructure, ugly high rises costing millions. The beauty of the city lies in the buildings made by britishers hundred years ago what a beautiful architecture but even that is now in bad conditions. Slums? Yes slums are all over but now this slum dwellers one can't call them poor, one small room in slum can cost minimum about a million INR. Majority of slums are encroached land, same goes to dharavi many western documentaries are made on dharavi but do you think they or all the slum dwellers need a better life? NO. The corrupt politicians too don't want slums to go in fear of loosing votes. Westerners many time acts stupid, they go to slum make videos projecting the dwellers as if very poor living in inhuman conditions, but this same people never leaves any opportunity to encroach lands. Slum developers, slum dwellers politicians are all same corrupt. Many sell their house in rehabiliated buildings and again encroach another area and make slums. The cycle goes on & on. The rich too are of different category there are people who spends thousands of rupees for one dinner in luxury restaurant but when it come to basic they are not less than slum dwellers in mentality. Majority of crowd that is not only in Bombay but all over are not more than 5".5" Tall, malnourished, below average personality, very unhygenic. Two decades ago politicians were screaming they will make Bombay into next sanghai, for get about sanghai they were not able to make it Bombay the britishers left. India needs to implement well managed programs by it's governments and millionairs to provide well managed housing and social assistance for it's poor like other countries. Foreigners should not be doing this for India. As is, the country operates and presents itself like something out of the Victorian 1800s. Watch shows like Little Doret or Berkley Square and compare. Sound infrastructure and urban planning is needed with respect for the environment . India needs compassion for its people.
I'd argue the biggest problem is the humongous population here. You saw the guy who had 9 children, that's the problem. We need to implement a birth control policy asap

The slums dwellers in Mumbai lived a hard lives. Yet, some are honestly surviving where some try to over smart by hook or crook yet they failed. 🙏
This is what i like about indians. Even if they lived in slums, they were able to find way to survive by having businesses, work. Unlike in my country, when you’re poor you’re literally waiting for a miracle, depending their lives to the government. Only few people who are working hard happen to succeed getting out in the slum
Indias unemployment rate is way higher than usa , uk etc. also they don’t get any benefits so obviously they will have to work or else they would be laying and smoking weed too
The gentrification is so real in this one. I'm not supporting the slums, but kicking out people just to build overpriced luxury homes that only a few could afford is just so corrupt. At first I thought that they are actually going to give the affected ones new homes for compensation but starting I saw their prototypes, I was wrong. Those luxury flats will not help the city at all. Instead, it will just affect more places due to displacement. It's selfish tbh.
As if these people who came to Dharavi are legal residents. No they are not. They are people just like the refugees from Iraq/Syria displaced after the war. They set up illegal shops or encroach into other's property, steal electricity from the main supply and don't pay taxes.

What hurts is that these people are not aware of why these things are happening to them, the simple reason they know and are reminded of is they might be lazy or not working hard enough to rise up from poverty, this mindset would pass on to the next generations til there wouldn’t be hope for them to revolt against those who has caused these to them.
This documentary was uploaded on 19NOV22 yet it feels like watching atleast 7-8 year old documentary because of the quality of the video and the old bollywood clips
They really need to do something drastic about the overpopulation issue. Also relocate the people into good homes too. Let them be given move in classes about maintaining the beauty and peace in their new homes. Employ them in various capacities to help build their new housing. It instilled pride in the people.
The 1st thing to do is to change their mindset. Not only for the poor, but also their leaders, aristocrats & the whole Indian. Something need to be change. Its 2022, but we still can see people lack of clean water, living in the slum with all unhealthy living area & packed with 10-17 people living in a small space. Their government & people need to change to improve for the development of India.
Maintenance is responsibility of people living in appartments not the developer hence if they can't do it themselves or thru third party than its their headache not developer
In one of the shots of the city you quickly see this oddly shaped skyscraper and it’s the home of the country’s richest man and its valued at 2 billion dollars, it apparently has a 16 story underground garage and a indoor ski park with snow and it’s all for one family. That man alone could probably solve a lot of the poverty in that city but he lives in this building surrounded by poverty.

Mumbai is a 'city of dreams' only for those who have the privilege of dreaming big. For a large part of India, dreaming is as luxurious as being able to afford food, shelter and good education for children, as everyone saw in this video. And mind you, Mumbai is one of the most advanced and metro cities of India. What even happens in the remote parts is much worse.
Gentrification is such a tough subject no matter where in the world, although I do applause them for having laws to provide housing for the people affected, but just like most places, they stop short of providing PROPER housing and many are worst off or thrown out of the city to be forgotten.
As has always been with the poor and less fortunate folk everywhere and more so in India, the population is incredible and their rate of multiplication is mind blowing. Note one man saying he has 9 kids - in this day and age. This has always been their curse. In a city like Mumbai where space is at a premium, a family of 3 struggle to survive - what chance does a family with 9 kids + elders have ? Unfortunately their financial situation doesn’t come to their mind when they have kids. Better community service and educating them about population control is the only way out. I had lived in Bombay for one year in the 80's when I got my first job. My friends used to tell me:" Bombay is a great city of paradoxes where a poor man earning 2 rupees a day live on the other side of a rich man earning 2 millions a day demarcated by a road - the poor man must be sleeping on the pavement every night "!

@@anshumankhanna5595 Correct. From Bombay I went to New Delhi where I remained upto 1994, for the first six months by renting a room inside the government quarters of a friend at Pahad Gunj. Then I resided in Dilshad garden and finally Mayur vihar phase 3. At that time there was only one line of flats in my area and behind which was acres of barren land. Honestly the very name of Mumbai gives me jitters.. never ever wanted to visit, except the airport for transit to fly abroad.
Mumbai city skyscraper 150m above. 208 all ready. 251 under construction. Mumbai next Hongkong.
Mumbai is mumbai that's it.
Man, take care of your pollution first. Going up 200 floors to escape from smogs and air pollution is absurd and disgusting. Richer thinks going up to the highest is safe??? What a morons! In 20 years Mumbai will become very populated and congested. Its a disaster waiting to happen 🤮
@@psk9664People here are so ill mannered , Mumbai cant be as close to hongkong or even dubai.
People dont even deserve such good facilities
I wish if Government take over those slum area and build a big building and give flats to those habitants. That will be more batter than leaving this way. And that will not only developed the city it will even create profits
The Mumbai slum might be filled with poverty but they generate a GDP of close to 300 million dollars a year, higher than most of indias neighbors. Mumbai is a small place for 20 million people though, it’s sad to see such a great divide.
how is it that they generate so many millions of dollars a year and are still so poor?
@@divitkarekar5803 it is wrong to think that living in a slum means they are poor. Yeah they probably don’t have the best lifestyle but the dharavi slum is home to thousands of micro businesses. Since Mumbai is such a large city, just think about how much revenue this slum is making.
@@divitkarekar5803 in dharavi 100sq foot slum house rent is 10k . At this price in tier 3 city we can live in 3 bhk room.
absolutely amazing documentary, you captured all lives of mumbai in one single video perfectly. Thanks for reporting honestly.
18:46 poor people get houses for free… wtf is he talking about. Its like saying the inhabitants are getting copper for an exchange of diamond.
How the F dare he diminish the existence of people who live in slum, deeming them as an eye sore that needs clearing just so that they can build luxury apartments for their own gain. How does evil people like these even sleep at night. Trust me when I say this, karma will get each one of them and punish them severely as they should be.
Life is made unfair by these evil people who need to be blasted off to hell asap
one thing i respect highly towards the chinese and indians... they work hard.. compared to everybody else.. especially the west
I am the 6th generation who stayed in heart ❤of Mumbai Marine drive my building is 154 years old we were total 7 members in 250 square feet with toilet bathroom outside, in posh area like marine drive even the man you see during taking with slum reba family of worli he too stayed in same building were we lived, recently in lockdown were came to know the reality, so finally after 154 years we moved out with my grandmother who is 90 years old n had spend 70 years here we moved to 2bhk in Mumbai suburbs global city just ab hour from Mumbai with all amenities swimming pool gym , gazeebo, senior citizens seating area,2 acre park with greenery, tennis court etc and belive me my 90 years old grand mother told in gujrati tu mane narag ma thi swarg ma lai aaiyo, means u brought me to heaven from hell... Hats off to you guys for sharing the content showing the CEO as well as the dissatisified guy
6:52 He is Selling That bag for 50$ which was Manufactured Probably around Less Than 7-8$. Nice way of Looting Foreigners in the Name of Sympathy (For Slum Area/People).
That’s normal lol
Bro are you saying that no company overprice there product? Are you idiot. You are ok with buying foreign product that are double in price then there production cost and be happy because of brand.
I think its reasonable according to the work
Same with designer bags
Amazing fact there is no place for poor peoples 😭
Welcome to real world
The last one was surprising. Even with no space he has 9 children and then complaints. Learn some amount of family planning man.
And this is the cause for such status.
Even animals know how to make stability in their no. but unfortunately we being humans don't take care of that...
Very interesting documentary 😊
Love the documentary
How can the comment say he found a way to get rich with the plastic? Chapeau to Mahesh good job!
With good governance that focuses on internal growth will sort this out. Second or Third tier cities in China today were just like this 20 years ago. Nothing is impossible.
I been to India 2x, there is so much incredible things to buy ...only issue is to get it back to USA...
Capitalism at its finest
Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room. As very few people in the comments can see this.
Socialism got the whole country bankrupt so what do you expect
India was socialist for 40 year of independence but its economy bombed after it became capitalist
