This is interesting. In 2009-2010, 10% of Indian expenditures went towards cereals (wheat, rice). In 2022-2023, that expenditure has come down to 5%. Almost every category in food items has had a “secular” decline except dry fruits! This is most likely because of Modi govts fight against inflation.
😂😂😂😂 Bcz 80 crores are getting free grains and grains are not costing Money. By the way, People will use less and less grains bcz Of fitness awareness, diabetes (most in India), less physical work, etc.
@@libshastra Obviously, those who got jobs 10 years ago, they will have enough money to spend on dry fruits 😜 "Importantly, the numbers show that the proportion of spending on food has dropped to 46.4% for rural households from 52.9% in 2011-12, while their urban peers spent just 39.2% of their overall monthly outgoes on food compared with 42.6% incurred 11 years earlier." So if you see above data, even if food consumption is half, the income soent on food is just reduced by 5% only. It means either price are so high or Income has reduced. Also compare the data from 1999 and 2011. Consumption were decreased more than 50%. So it is natural. Dry fruits consumption has increased bcz it will increase day by day. We were poor country. UPA bring out 27 crores out of poverty and Modi government brought 25 crore out of poverty (as per government data). So few of them will start consuming dry fruits. It is relative data. I have not compared the 1999 to 2011 data for dry fruits but I can blindly say that, it would have increased too. It is simple natural flow. It will tell the same about consumption of Pizza, burger etc.

@28:40 rural urban gap didn’t have a steep decline recently. The last data point covers a much longer time gap but is equally spaced in the graph, leading to a skewed impression
Giving free grains would reduce the % expenditure even after including the imputed value of the free grain. It just leaves more money on the table for non food expenditure. The same goes for expense on non grain consumption within food bucket
It is worth remembering this: In any economy Personal consumption expenditure is only a fraction of the total economy. For example: The Covid vaccine which people got, the new school building that got built , the newarport/railway station does not show up directly in the Personal Consumption. So these numbers do not show the full power of the econom. The new buildings built by a call center company- many things are not PCE but do matter a lot!

It certainly shouldn't be! China's experience is a good lesson. It has a smaller average land holding size and much less fertile land, yet it's agricultural productivity is around 2x India's. The difference is they reformed their agricultural sector in the 70s and got rid of price controls on output (food) and inputs (fertilizer, power) in favor of direct support to farmers. This is not so different from what the Indian government did with with direct benefit subsidy. If only economics was taught better people might understand the downsides of price floors and ceilings and how they disrupt the supply-demand equilibrium.
I wish they had a cost of living index to compare the cost of comparable baskets of goods across states - separating out urban and rural for each state. Would make it so much easier to assess quality of life across regions.
- Abject poverty is down below 5% - Destitution has declined drastically - Rural urban gap is closing - from 90% to 65% - Spending power has gone up 3 times - Food spending is down ( it’s a percentage of your income which means income has gone up hence food spending as a percentage has gone down ) - Within food - Indians are spending more on high nutrient food ( fruits, milk etc ) - South India is doing much better than the north and East is poorest - Average rural household is spending Rs 3860 per person per month Vs urban household Rs 6521 per person per month .
Newly published data by Henley & Partners shows that while China and India are losing the most millionaires (or billionaires) to emigration, the United Kingdom and Russia are also expected to be left behind by a substantial number of their very wealthy residents in the years 2022 and 2023.
ENGEL'S LAW from german statician in 19th century stated that when the country's national income rises their percentage of income dedicated to food decreases, in 1950s in UK after ww2 the percentage spent on food of income of english people was about 40%. Which we have today in 2024 so basically we are 80yrs (about) behind them and our urbanisation rate is also about the same and if compared to Dutch then we are actually about 100 yrs behind as they were here after ww1 which was early 1920s though then it got terribly bad for europe in late 1920s to early 30s while in same period USSR economy was accelerating very highly and it was the same time our National movement turned Hard left and NM joshi and nehru, CR Das suddenly became socilist as at that time ussr's success when west was down was seen as success of socilism which resulted in a situation that even today in India defacto political preceived economics is left whether its bjp or congress and yes it all starts from ENGEL's law and political economy that was birthed subsequently after it, its a shame u didnt mentioned this fascinating story
I think this data needs to be analysed with the data of savings. Only then it would give an estimate of the income. If the expenditure has gone up and in turn the savings have reduced, it may not mean that income has gone up in same proportion of the expenses.
1. The total daily per capita consumption expenditure at current prices is Rs 129 (rural) and Rs 217 (urban). These are too low amounts and highlight how poor the country actually is. 2. The government is providing free grains to ~80 crore people, i.e. ~56% of the total population. So basically 56% of the population is actually poor because if these people were to buy grains themselves, they would fall below the poverty line.
Poor means not basis on pds. 20lakhs cars, washing machines, air conditioners using households have white ration cards. Other than govt and organised sectors employees holding white cards.
@@ArunKumar-wi8bh While I agree that some "undeserving" people are using the free grain scheme, there is still a huge population that is actually poor. The government+organized sector may be less than 10% of the total population. Daily per capita consumption expenditure of only Rs 129 (rural) and Rs 217 (urban) speaks of high poverty.

how is it 50% better on an average>? considering as you say 2x inflation, then current price values in real terms is 50% thus 6521/- becomes 3260.5/-; making growth% = (3260.5 - 2630)(100)/(2630) == 24% only... and that growth is over a decade very dismal tbh
Well I think SG meant it's better than before, 2004/05 to 2009/10 with the same NSS data has a much lower consumption growth (close to 20% with back of envelope calc from world bank inflation for India in those years) Considering that it was at an already lower base of ₹1105 to 2009/10 value, this jump makes it better(although marginally) to 2022-23.

You know that old age pension is charity and not salary. These people worked their whole life for their own family and still couldn't save for their own old age, that is a real tragedy. But charity is dependent on the ability of the charitable (govt). They are supposed to be receiving the 1) free ration 2) free healthcare of Ayushman Bharat Yojna in addition to the old age pension.
What about Goa, high in both rural and urban. Unless gross consumption is extrapolated, we cannot appreciate the full extent of development. Can SG comment on that?
How have peoples income increased in rural areas when food consumption has decreased and farmers are still protesting to get an increase on MRP price? It does not give anyone confidence in the source data as usual with Govt reports.
What ELSE are we spending on, Shekhar? Shekhar: "I will talk about what Indians are spending on OTHER than food." (yes, 60% of the total spend!) Then, a minute later Shekhar: "I love politics, so will talk about farmers, food, MSP and everything related under the sun. I like hearing the sound of my voice." 🤣🤣😂
As someone has already pointed out. Spending on some articles not increasing can also point to the selling price of that item not increasing as much as other items. Maybe if MSP is not there it will decrease much more, not because people don't want it but because the purchase price is decreasing a lot. Not referring to MSP as a good thing though.

😂😂😂😂
Bcz 80 crores are getting free grains and grains are not costing Money.
By the way, People will use less and less grains bcz Of fitness awareness, diabetes (most in India), less physical work, etc.
@@BharatThatIsIndia inflation was high in double digits before 2014
@@BharatThatIsIndiagovt does not cover all food items. Dry fruit purchases went up - that’s actually discretionary spending.
Thanks to EMI spending pattern has changed😂
@@libshastra Obviously, those who got jobs 10 years ago, they will have enough money to spend on dry fruits 😜
"Importantly, the numbers show that the proportion of spending on food has dropped to 46.4% for rural households from 52.9% in 2011-12, while their urban peers spent just 39.2% of their overall monthly outgoes on food compared with 42.6% incurred 11 years earlier."
So if you see above data, even if food consumption is half, the income soent on food is just reduced by 5% only.
Shekhar Ji, as per the rural spending you mention that Bengal slightly better , but your graphics shows WB to be worse than Bihar 3454 bengal is 3407 .
no matter what data says or experts, I do not think some leaders in states that produce/sell on MSP would make any change. Secondly, more focus ought to have been on West Bengal, which appears to be doing similar to other poor states, considering that it was one of the most advanced states during independence.
States cannot grow if the state govts are regressive. TMC is a mess.
I don't know much about the economics, but when I got admission in Engineering in 2007, my yearly fee was 55 Thousand and my father earning was 20 Thousand( he was a government teacher). In 2024, fee in that college is 1 lakh and teacher salary is nearly 1 lakh as of now. Similarly, we have inverter and AC at home which was not their when I did my Engineering. My father had to borrow money when me and my sister were doing our degrees.
The problem today is the social media. My parents were not able to cry or able to express themselves, but we can do that now.
Housing costs are not mentioned. It could be close to 50%. Leaving very little for discretionary spending.

Hmmm, perhaps...I hope you liked this episode. Thank you for watching and writing in...best wishes, Shekhar

- Destitution has declined drastically
- Rural urban gap is closing - from 90% to 65%
- Spending power has gone up 3 times
- Food spending is down ( it’s a percentage of your income which means income has gone up hence food spending as a percentage has gone down )
- Within food - Indians are spending more on high nutrient food ( fruits, milk etc )
- South India is doing much better than the north and East is poorest
- Average rural household is spending Rs 3860 per person per month Vs urban household Rs 6521 per person per month .

Great Analysis.... Shekhar Sir👍👍
I think this data needs to be analysed with the data of savings. Only then it would give an estimate of the income. If the expenditure has gone up and in turn the savings have reduced, it may not mean that income has gone up in same proportion of the expenses.
exactly sir, no savings due to inflation, 40-50% hike in prices.
Fantastic analysis 👏

Other than govt and organised sectors employees holding white cards.
@@ArunKumar-wi8bh
While I agree that some "undeserving" people are using the free grain scheme, there is still a huge population that is actually poor.

Well I think SG meant it's better than before, 2004/05 to 2009/10 with the same NSS data has a much lower consumption growth (close to 20% with back of envelope calc from world bank inflation for India in those years)
Considering that it was at an already lower base of ₹1105 to 2009/10 value, this jump makes it better(although marginally) to 2022-23.
When old citizens start getting realistic cover, pension, that is equal to at least the state avg, is when one would accept we are a caring, and developing country. .... _Some per month old age pensions in the "yellow" States, Rs 350 Chattisgarh, Rs 400 Bihar, Rs 200 Assam, Manipur, Rs 300 Nagaland, Mizoram ...Just imagine living a month on these numbers_ Is India growing and fast in last 10 years, sure, but *if we can not collectively help manage the lives of our citizens with diminishing personhoods, we as a nation continue to diminish our nationhood.*

Can we have these graphs adjusted with inflation ?
