    Thank you! I inherited this saw from my grandfather. I’m a Makita girl so this one threw me. I’m so glad you shared not only the how-to but your humor and humility. It’s good to see I’m not the only one trapped in a comedy of errors some days.

      @@ToddVance - The spring problem is easy to resolve. Remove the clear plastic guard and the black metal half-round plate that holds the spring. Remove the rubber bumper that is attached to the metal half-round plate. Open the compartment that houses the spring. Push the spring ends into their respective tiny holes and close the compartment. Give the metal half-round plate a half or quarter turn [can't remember which] to tension the spring. This will align the two parts such that they can now be mounted on the saw. Yesterday, my blade came loose... in the middle of a project and I went to tighten it???? My Kobalt is 5 years old instruction book is some where... where I can't find it... so how hard could it be to tighten the saw blade? After 15 minutes I jury rigged my table saw to finish my project and then went to TH-cam and found your video. Kudos to you Todd... my heart sank when I heard you talk about the spring... I've had the same problem with other machinery and springs. Just about next to impossible to fix unless, you were an engineer on the Space Shuttle project or a 12 year old computer geek to fix it! Well, because of your video I'll be able to replace and tighten my blade... Good work Todd and I hope you fix that spring, would make another great video! I did my back deck over about 5 years back with this Kobalt miter saw for the price it is a great saw! Thanks again!

    Thank you Todd, the button on the back is so obvious once you know it's there.
    You can replace this by only backing out the one bolt (phillips), and obviously the main bolt on the blade. I just finished it. I replaced the factory blade for the diablo you have on there.
    Step 1: Align Shield so you can back out the phillips.
    Step 2: mainpulate the shields until the main bolt is visable.
    Step 3: Follow Todd's Instructions on depressing the button to lock the blade and turn the clockwise to break it free.
    Step 4 (if you're in a hurry), wiggle the blade out.
    Step 4 with time: back out (dont' remove) the other bolts on the shield that protrude into the blade area. You'll hit these on your way out. Short bolts would have been preferred kolbalt
    Step 5: Assemble in reverse.
    Step 6: Thank Todd for the video
    Thank you Todd.

    @Todd - The spring problem is easy to resolve. [Easy for a triple engineer and inventor like me ))) ]

  • @ronfulton2940
    @ronfulton2940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    There's a better way (and no it's not the way the manual says)
    The black half circle plate that the guard is attached to has 2 screws. The on closest to him in the video (he removed it through the little hole) loosen that one but DO NOT remove it.
    The other screen is a Philips on the opposite end of the plate, to the left in the video (It is NOT the one in the center he says not to remove) anyway, remove the screw on the other end of the plate and lift up and towards the back to remove the entire guard. Now access blade easily.
    To put the guard back you line up the plate over it's half circle outline and the screw you loosened but didn't remove sits in a notch. Then just pop the other screen back in.
    30 minutes with the manual and then this video and it turned out to be a 2 minute job but no instructions anywhere on how to actually do this

    • @reyrainer6332
      @reyrainer6332 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Fulton That was a great addition to the video. I didn’t remove, but just loosened the back guard screw and could shift the whole thing out of the way. Since I was alone, I just taped it out of the way by attaching the tape to the motor and the attacked the blade bolt, which required a ratchet to losen. The provided tool? Might as well chuck that.

    The manual wont tell you how to fix your dust shield, but here's a hint. You have to remove the blade in order to line up the circular spring in its correct slots, or small holes. Only then will you be able to see where its positioned. Also if you just remove the opposite screw from the one you took out closest to the arm(screw closet to the back of the saw) that holds the dust shield in place you can lift it towards you facing the saw and access your blade bolt to loosen and remove it.

    When your saw craps out in a few months, using a mason cut off wheel is why. Mason wheels are designed to run at a much slower RPM. Your going to burn out your motor. That why they sell miter saws specifically designed for cut off wheels. Just an FYI for you

    Easier way.... there is only one screw to loosen to access the arbor bolt. The guard has an access for the phillips end(left side) Rotate the guard until you can insert the phillips. You can then loosen the screw (no need to remove completely)and this will allow you to rotate the guard and the bracket (up and counter clockwise)to expose the arbor bolt****Threads are opposite****😎🤠

    I misplaced my owner’s manual and didn’t feel like looking for it so I thought I’ve done this before, how hard can it be? I took out a screw and was about to keep pulling them until I got to the blade. Then I decided not to be an idiot and get some help. Thanks for posting your video. You just saved me about an hour of frustration!

    I did the same thing as you did. I’ve changed blades on multiple miter saws and the Kobalt is the worst design ever. I eventually got my guard return spring back. Mine was out square from day one. and spent an hour getting that corrected. Since then I’ve retired that piece of blue garbage to cutting rough cut and beams. I bought a 10 non sliding DeWalt and am very happy.

      So you like the non slide? I feel like that slide has helped me a bunch but you tempt me with throwing this thing away.

    My spring came flying out too but was able to get it back together, not that hard to do if you happen to be born w/a extra limb!

    In the minut 2:20 you got to lose that screw and lift the plastic cover and remove the main screw fron the blade and thas it.... Sorry for my bad English

    The instructions you couldn't find are right in your saw's instruction manual and also on the Internet in PDF format, it specifically says only remove the screw for the face plate to change the blade.

      How irresponsible of them to stick it right in the manual! That thing gets tossed even before the box it came in!

    Actually very simple. Loosen the phillips screw at the front of the blade housing using the tool that came with it. Slide the housing back until you can access the allen screw for the blade. You don't have to remove it. It's reverse thread, so it is righty loosey, lefty tighty.
    Have a beer, and relax, dude.
    BTW, this is a great saw for trim work. Light, easy to use, (and replace blades), The only problem is the trigger safety seems to stall a bit at times. I've cut 2x stock, but I wouldn't do that on a daily basis.
    Strictly a trim saw for me. Easy to haul around room to room doing baseboards, and crown.

    My issue is I cannot get other brands of blades to work in my Kobalt mitre saw. I put in a new blade and it struggles to spin and then once the blade gets going it doesn't want to stop after the motor has stopped, but then when I put the Kobalt blade back on everything works fine. Any one else have this issue or any suggestion on what the problem might be?

    • @ToddVance
      @ToddVance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I could help here but I eventually put the original blade back on and haven't messed with it since. Hopefully someone else here might know your answer. Sorry.

    Perfect, just spent 30 minutes scratching my head why the arbor bolt hits the blade guard. I kept thinking.. "this can't be right, why would they have you remove the guard just to get an extra 1/8 inch clearance on the arbor?"
