Slideshow + Video - 3/16/18 - This day was the true end of an era. The final six Montreal Maine and Atlantic locomotives were finally picked up from Northern Maine Junction by Pan Am Railways, and were in transit to their new home, for some their final home, Larry's Truck and Electric (LTEX) in McDonald, Ohio. Along the way they were dropped off in Lowell, MA, for transfer to Pan Am Railways train POSE, where I had the chance to get numerous detail footage of the locomotives from the MBTA Gallagher Terminal.
After the MM&A closed due to bankruptcy caused by the Lac Megantic derailment that occurred in 2013 these locomotives were stashed away and stored from 2014 to 2018, when they finally emerged to be taken away. It was quite an experience to see these locomotives, once the bloodline of a Class II railroad, in such a state of disrepair, and one that will always be remembered as one of my most interesting catches of my railfanning career. As of when I wrote this, the status of all the locomotives other than the F40PHM-2 was last reported as stored at LTEX. However, MMA 450, the F40, has been acquired by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and is being used in excursion passenger service. Hopefully more of these locomotives will come back to life, and this unique power won't be lost forever. Enjoy the video, and if you like what you saw please be sure to like, comment, and subscribe.

Its a shame how such a careless or rather poor shortline neglected the care their engines needed. Engines like 5016 would give railroads like NS a heart attack. Also 8202 was one of the engines once owned by the Pennsylvania northeastern here in PA along with a few others. I personally saw the engine myself when she was on the Halloween trains in New Hope and that engine was definitely in better hands and seemed better in condition back then (Only 8212 is left and is still operational with CR blue, 8211 is in New hope still in NS paint). We gave them those units and seeing them vandalized (and thinking their insides look like crap because of MMA being so good at maintenance) breaks my heart. 5026 i believe was involved in the Lac Megantic crash which was the final straw of the railroad and I made a documentary of that on my channel. MMA was like the Penn Central of short lines, even CSX does a better job than them I imagine since MMA was guilty of several safety setbacks which were exposed by of course Lac Megantic. As far as I know about 5017 (the leader of MMA 2 in that crash) it won't be scrapped but will never run again. it was held as evidence against MMA in court.

@@EpicThe112 The only reason 7087 doesn't run is not due to design flaws in the C30-7 as the engine was quite successful. Though in the wrong hands without basic maintenance and it being done incorrectly (Wrong air filters for replacement? cmon now) they turn into junk like 5017 and degrade faster than normal. 7087 doesn't run anymore due to lack of parts and GEs not really being built to last long especially in tourist operations. It's been out of service since 2016 for mechanical work but New hope pretty much gave up on it due to lack of parts and they already have 2198 and 8218 (A GP30 and GP9u) that both have more parts available and are more than enough to compensate not to mention being twice as reliable and if New Hope gets power short they can borrow engines from their freight counterpart Pennsylvania Northeastern (Mainly 7010, a GP9RM) also New Hope isn't the richest of tourist railroads compared to ones like Strasburg :/

I’m sorry for being a year late, but this video is both sad and kind of rewarding to me. My grandfather use to be a MMA mechanic in Millinocket Maine and I was first introduced to the railroad in 2007 where I met 5023, it was awesome ( and I had permission since my grandfather was there and everything) very magical moment... but I’m hopeful there is a future for these guys! I wish I got to see them when they came down on ( EDPO?)

It would be great to see these girls back in action, again. If I had a railroad museum, I would definitely go to where they are and purchase every one of them and restore them to operating condition. And have them repainted and repaired to running condition. I wouldn't send them to the scrappers,at all.

Yeah, I agree. Just the fact that they were sitting in storage for so long doesn't help their cause either. And, as you said, railroads can now get more efficient and modernized locomotives, so the only real possibility would be for a shortline or some small railroad to purchase them.

I can say without debate that the montreal maine and atlantic railway is hands down the worst railroad in history. They had poor management, poor choices of locomotives, they chose money over safety, they used one man train crews, they left trains parked on grades, and transport canada did not see to it that operations were safe. also, the c30-7 should be banned from service because of their reliability issues. The throttle lagging, the overheating engine, and their poor brakes.

  • @deanlabbe9952

Yes it's sad to see them sitting there. However there life is over. It's time to turn them back into useful steel. They are worn out and not worth the cost to restore them.
